Thanks for all the feedback everyone! It is disappointing that we did not have a Mazda CX-9 for the comparison. Mazda did not have one for us. Being an incredibly old vehicle now it's highly unlikely it would have placed anywhere near the top of the list and most certainly would have been scrapping it out near the bottom.
As someone who's fallen in love with teh CX 9 after test driving it, I am trouble pulling the trigger on it. As a family ma, safety is a major concern and unfortunately the CX 9 is not a top safety pick. I am considering a used Acura MDX or Lexus RX (a lot more money ;(
i just bought a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe sport for 16,100. 34,000 miles on it. for my familys needs and our budget i feel like im the real winner here. i will never buy a new vehicle ever.
Yeah never do either! I'll charge it for delivery fee to the dealership, administration fees taxes etc etc etc.. and for what a six to eight year loan. LMAO
I test drove my neighbor's 2014 Sante Fe limited a couple of days ago. It is all what you say it is except for the hard ride. On smooth roads it goes like a dream. Show it the smallest of pot holes and it causes you to think the tires are over inflated, which they were not. I checked.
Traverse in the 8th place ? I can't prefer other cars to traverse just because of the fuel economy ! because it does many things great its V6 is powerful (V8 like) very smooth ride quiet cabin and suitable for long journeys engine sound is good (after durango) very very spacious and I think it is the best looking crossover under 45k specially with 1LT or LTZ !! it deserves 2nd or 3rd after durango !
You guys compared head to head the Santa fe with the pathfinder V6 and it was hands down the pathfinder. I find this comparison is a little skewed in regards to comparing power-trains and vehicles
Good to know that my current choice, Highlander, made to top 3. Wife does not prefer domestic brands and there were a lot of problems/complaints from consumers. Domestics have more bad reviews mechanically (transmission/etc..) than imports (Japanese: Highlander). I do like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Durango, but, after reading so many mechanical problem reviews.. meh.. Some family members (aunts/uncles/etc..) have had Toyotas and never had any problems (major) and they're over 10 years old with at least 150k+ miles. My 2002 Toyota Celica was 10 years-old with ~125k miles before i gave it to my brother in-law (still runs). Celica was giving me 35mpg average at the time i gave it away (480-500 miles range; fills up ~12-13 gallons). My 2012 Camry SE (4cyl) also gives me 30mpg average and no major problems, yet.. Hopefully the redesigned Pilot comes out soon enough before I make a purchase late this year. Or the redesigned Explorer.
I love Toyota too. The 2012-2014.5 Camry is so unique in styling, I wanted one SO bad. But Toyota dealers were being really annoying with numbers, so I went with a Honda Accord instead.
Both the Santa fe and highlander are attractive packages. I lean towards the highlander because of Toyota's reputation of being reliable. I have little experience with Korean made cars.
For me it's 1. Durango 2. Santa fa 3. Highlander 4. Sorento 5. Explorer 6. Pathfinder 7. Pilot 8. Traverse... Honorable mentions Gmc Acadia and Mazda 6
Great review. My wife and I are in the market for a 3 row SUV, and we've driven all of these except the KIA. It came down to two choices, the Toyota and Hyundai. Hyundai has come a long way, but the Toyota had a little bit more room, and that's why we chose it.
I have an 07 Santa Fe and Love it to this day. I have driven others and they don't compare. My 07 has 72k on it and I have never broke down, never needed a mechanic, it is very dependable. I just have the regular maintenance done. If I sell it, I will definitely get another!
@@accordwhip3467 that's exactly what these people don't exaggerate. how is your car run and went to get the 150,000 miles and who's the best?? I'm sure the Toyota will still be running.
The problem with all of these comparisons is that they never really show how comfortable all the seats are. They all say 7/8 seats, but I have sat in most of these (not the Chevy which does look large) and the Pilot was the only one that had a comfortable middle position in the second row. My Dad had the highlander and the middle spot in the second row was only useful for short trips in a pinch. This is why I will be buying a Pilot... I really wish these comparisons would consider this and show us some bodies in those seats for comparison.
Traverse last?! That car should EASILY be first. None of the other mid-sizers have the third row volume of the Traverse or ride quality. This is a shame!
You do realize it's available with a V6, RWD or AWD, and multiple trim levels, some of which are FAR less than the ridiculous quoted price in this test (not sure how they even got that high a price, I couldn't even build one for that much on the dodge.com site, unless they are adding the $995 dest charge?). And in V6 trim at lower models that have less seat foam, less features, the weight is quite a lot less too than this mega-loaded Citadel? It's shameful that the reviewers didn't mention all this. Instead they present the D as-such to the uninitiated who then end up thinking "oh I gotta pay 50K and get a V8?!" Sigh....please guys @ Autoguide...next time, highlight the options the car has which the others DO NOT such as the rear seat entertainment pack which is $2000 and discount them all and compare the price apples to apples, so people can make informed decisions.
Niz D yes i realize it comes with a base V6, but try the V6 with that huge heavy car and see who it feels. The V8 engine is the best way to go on this car that weighs 5K or more and that is too much specially on a midsize SUV category. even tho the Durango doesn't look all midsize but its competing against them.
Highlander; come on it was beaten out by a Dodge that guzzles gas and cost like 30% more, and you call that elegant interior? And Sorry Santa fe doesn't fit/sit the number of people who are in the market for this segment.
I agree. Chrysler products aren't historically very reliable and having owned a 2011 Hyundai, I can contest that it begins to fall apart and make noises very quickly. I like the new Highlander but equipped the way we'd want it, we'd be looking at over $47k. That said, MB is not known for their reliability either. And the maint and repair costs are ridiculous.
Robert LeBlanc yup with all the upgrades they do get expensive but you get what you pay for, my second choice would be the Dodge Durango you can get it in Rear wheel drive how cool is that?
Thank you. I,ve been waiting for this comparison. Although you left out the CX-9, I feel it wouldn't have won anyway considering how old it is. Good job. Keep the comparos coming.
what is your criteria for choosing which suv is better over the others? you had very minimal negative things to say about the explorer which was placed at 7 and then you have almost nothing positive to say about the nissan and it scored several places higher than the explorer. this seems to be a very biased review, you guys obviously only like non-american suvs which are small, underpowered, and boring to drive.
The listed SUVs here: 1. Chevy Traverse 2. Kia Sorento 3. Toyota Highlander 4. Ford Explorer 5. Nissan Pathfinder 6. Dodge Durango 7. Honda Pilot 8. Hyundai Santa Fe
i agree why no mazda? also the most expensive and least fuel efficient vehicle is number two? i just dont understand, very disappointing love your channel and always a great product keep it up
A V6 AWD Durango Citadel would have been a better contender. Better gas mileage and lower price. The same fancy bells and whistles as the V8 AWD, but about $3 thousand cheaper.
J High You are absolutely correct. Comparing the V8 Durango to this pack is apples to oranges. With the V6, the Durango has the right price, the right amenities, and much more towing ability and room than anything here. Bad test.
Denys A I traded in a 2012 V6 Sorento SX AWD for a 2015 Durango Citadel AWD V6. I think the Durango has the best looking exterior styling in this group. They are all good choices so I guess it comes down to personal preferences.
Dodge Durango are the worst cars . Don't know know why people think it should be on the top f the list . Chevy is also the worst . No matter how many commercials you see .They suck . Get yourself.a reliable car like Toyota or Honda . The best quality car always come from other country's .
thatguyh24 So I should trade in my brand new 2015 Durango for a Toyota or Honda SUV, on the advice of an idiot UA-cam troll with the English grammar skills of a third world immigrant 10 year old? No thank you.
Looking at used 2013-14 mid sized SUV. What has had the least reliability issues out of these and will have the lowest repair costs? Combining these reviews with a few years of testing which should I get?
They probably didn't include the CX-9 because it would have been the oldest design vehicle in the test and the Outlander competes more with vehicles like the Rav4 and Escape.
***** Yeah I guess you're right. They might've just forgotten about the CX-5 though because its exterior design is the same "Kodo" design language in the 3 and 6. And the Outlander is right in the middle of compact and midsize SUV territory. Even Car and Driver said they dont even know what class it's in.
Santa Fe is a good contender. I've to disagree with Ford being 7th place. Top 3 at the very least. Also the Dodge infotainment is so damn stupid. Then again my ford touch lacks speed.
Well if that's really your informed opinion on the UConnect system in the Dodge and other Chrysler products, you sir, are in the teeny weeny minority who thinks so. Google it. :)
Although you guys do point out that the Durango absolutely crushed the competition, price aside, your written article doesn't jive in all of its logic for what you said about the D. First you say, "Not everything is perfect in this Dodge though, the upper portion of the front seats feel like a wooden board and the fit and finish is just OK" but then you immediately follow that with, "If the absolute best vehicle, with the most comfortable seats and nicest drivetrain is all that matters, here is your crossover." Huh?! How can you say most comfy seats and simultaneously put down the upper portion of the front seats? And the volume/turn dials were loose? Uhm, a quick trip to your dealer should fix that easy, what's the big deal? Lastly, how can you compare the Hemi V8 with the rest of the sad engines in this group? No comparison! Sure it costs more! Sure it uses more fuel! But the performance, sound, and luxury of it? And in your video you said some staffers found the admitedly best-in-test transmission reluctant to downshift, is most likely due to them not realizing that ECO MODE defaults to ON every time you start the car. In my book, the Durango demolishes all of these others, especially because you could get it with the V6, and/or RWD instead of AWD, and also lower trim models for way less cost. Total win. Also for 53k, it's obvious you guys threw in the rear-seat BLURAY entertainment package, which is like 2 grand on its own (but really nice). Point is, did the competitors have anything like that? No. So again, Apples to ...
Great comparison, but I think that the Highlander Hybrid should have taken the place of the regular Highlander in this comparison since the Nissan Hybrid was compared. Also, the Highlander Hybrid has better specs than the one used to compare. I do not own a SUV but found this video very useful.
How can you put a Kia 5th and a Hyundai 3rd??? I guess you never consider how cheap they look from a mile away and they suck at durability. Well cared Toyotas look brand new 10 years later, the upholstery feels awesomely smooth and cozy, interior plastic still intact and good looking like a Mercedes or BMW, and they drive solid, smooth and quiet. Kia goes on 10th place. Hyundai goes on 9th place. Sorry but I prefer Coke over Sam's Cola, Nike over cheap Walmart shoes.
I really like the balanced reviews you guys do, giving lots of good information that's not too technical. I would also appreciate a bit more focus on the "info-tainment" systems in these vehicles, as that often plays a big part in purchasing decisions. Was there a reason the Acura MDX was excluded from this comparison?
I think the highlander should've. Won because not only is it a Toyota. That dosent break it had great. Fuel economy and from my perspective. Because i own a 2015 highlander it has the most luxury in it for the best price with comfortable seats and to me looked alot better than the others it also has soft to the touch leather and thee best center stack it has enough power to haul what u need and has alot of offroad capabilities amd dont pit base type models against. Premium. Models it wasent fair amd clearly the Durango. Got last had worst fuel economy and my durango when i had it for 1 year the transmission. Always fails ut had the nosiest cabin because of the boxy shape clearly the highlander won
Claude Etienne Your prejudice is showing. The Durango came in second even though it was RIDICULOUSLY equipped with a V8 in a competition against V6 machines. With a V6, the Durango is competitively priced, gets competitive mpg, and is a much more serious vehicle than these others. It's reliable, it has great fit and finish, it has the best electronics in the business, and it can tow more than ANY of these crossovers. It isn't even close. The Durango is BY FAR the best.
+Chris McManus My family owns a 2011 Pilot, but my dad goes on a lot of office trips around the country and he's rented an Explorer several times. He says it's amazing, and I really wanna see how that car is :)
I can't conceive of a test with this group that didn't use a Dodge Durango with a V6. You can buy a Durango Limited with all of the good traits that you mention and mpg rivaling the rest of these for about $40,000. "Mid-pack" on the price, for a vehicle that gets as good mpg as the rest . . . and will tow more than any here and seat 7. I have to disqualify this test for the variables. Like most tests, I'm afraid, we're comparing apples to oranges.
Traverse? REALLY. Of course you would like Chevy. There is a reason countries around the world don't buy as many American cars as Americans import from other countries such as Japan and Germany.
As a guy I'd choose the Highlander, it has that edge to it.
Mazda, and Mits. barrow most of their ideas(looks, and mechanics)from Ford, and Dodge anyways.. I guess, that's the reason why, they've excluded them.
It drives better than the whole bunch... and looks better too. Old doesn't necessarily mean bad. And btw, there's a new CX-9 on the way.
The CX-9 is a good looking SUV, but I think the Ford Edge still looks a bit better however, the CX-9 does have more of a style to it.
As someone who's fallen in love with teh CX 9 after test driving it, I am trouble pulling the trigger on it. As a family ma, safety is a major concern and unfortunately the CX 9 is not a top safety pick. I am considering a used Acura MDX or Lexus RX (a lot more money ;(
The Hyundai Santa Fe or Hyundai Santa Feet ???
Aside from the Durango which is too much.. the Highlander and Santa Fe are the best midzise SUV
Hyundai Santa Fe all day everyday baby!!!

Yes, all except the Sorento. In terms of ride quality, I remember the Durango was best. But, I liked the ride/handling balance of the CX-9.
Dodge's idea of an "elegant interior": Putting chrome trim around black plastic.
it has soft touch material unlike others having cheap hard plastic.
Hyundai and Kia would have been last on my list.
Toyota highlander was the best. it had the (2nd) best interior, but cost like 15,000 less than the Durango.
Traverse in the 8th place ? I can't prefer other cars to traverse just because of the fuel economy !
because it does many things great
its V6 is powerful (V8 like)
very smooth ride
quiet cabin and suitable for long journeys

very very spacious
and I think it is the best looking crossover under 45k specially with 1LT or LTZ !!
it deserves 2nd or 3rd after durango !
Mohmd Nassir wow I agree! You know how comfortable can adults feel in the third row.
I agree
base Honda Pilot compare to Top of the line of hyundai, kia,nissan,toyota,dodge,chevy.... what a fair compare.
Mbxc
The Toyota Highlander is way better than the
Dodge,Kia,Honda,Hyundai,Nissan and Ford
You guys compared head to head the Santa fe with the pathfinder V6 and it was hands down the pathfinder. I find this comparison is a little skewed in regards to comparing power-trains and vehicles
Why not include the Buick Enclave instead of the sparsely appointed Traverse?
Review should be redone with the CX-9 as most mentioned already. Outlander as well.
Good to know that my current choice, Highlander, made to top 3. Wife does not prefer domestic brands and there were a lot of problems/complaints from consumers. Go Toyota! Japanese cars rock!
I love Toyota too. The 2012-2014.5 Camry is so unique in styling, I wanted one SO bad. But Toyota dealers were being really annoying with numbers, so I went with a Honda Accord instead.
Love the Durango love the new look best looking one in this video at least.
Would get a V6 Pathfinder. Best interior to me.
Both the Santa fe and highlander are attractive packages. I lean towards the highlander because of Toyota's reputation of being reliable. I have little experience with Korean made cars.
ProductofNZ So, just take your money down to Toyota and buy their latest washing machine . . . I mean, SUV.
...I don't get it?
+ProductofNZ fwwqioo
For me it's 1. Durango 2. Santa fa 3. Highlander 4. Sorento 5. Explorer 6. Pathfinder 7. Pilot 8. Traverse...
Honorable mentions Gmc Acadia and Mazda 6
+DEREK Williams Neither of your 'honorable mentions' are 3 row cars., which was the main criteria for this comparison.
The traverse came in last. It has the most interior room and a solid highway cruiser. The only fault I have is the uncomfortable headrest.
I came in last because it's merely 17 miles to the gallon, you might as well be driving a Tahoe or Yukon.
Great review. My wife and I are in the market for a 3 row SUV, and we've driven all of these except the KIA. It came down to two choices, the Toyota and Hyundai. Hyundai has come a long way, but the Toyota had a little bit more room, and that's why we chose it.

Very true
I agree 100%, just bought one and absolutely love it. Smoothest right I've ever been in. Total upgrade to my life.
The Dodge Durango is the winner most powerful suv with all the luxury you can expect
My 2011 Pilot is doing great. I wish Honda would redesign the Pilot, though. It's been five years.
Wow the Chevy should be way up the list, the Hyundai should be down the list, and the Pilot should definitely be further down the list.
im happy for hyundai
I would have done Highlander, Traverse Durango, then Sante Fe....
The Durango is good, but its too thirsty, heavy, and i wouldn't need a V8 on a 3rd row SUV and cost a lot. I'd take the Highlander anytime
You do realize it's available with a V6, RWD or AWD, and multiple trim levels, some of which are FAR less than the ridiculous quoted price in this test (not sure how they even got that high a price, I couldn't even build one for that much on the dodge.com site, unless they are adding the $995 dest charge?). juan tafoya I've always like AWD in my SUVs. When I want to hang it out a bit, I'll take out a RWD coupe.
Robert LeBlanc that's true, it makes more sense to get SUV in AWD.
juan tafoya Now, if an SUV had a driver chosen Mode selector for either torque vectored AWD or limited slip RWD, then that would be sweet.
What about the Mazda CX-9? Was there not one available for this test? I figured that would've competed well here.
Nice review, guys! When the Pilot is redesigned, it will take the top spot!
Yes!! Go hyundai!
They must have purposely ignored the CX-9 as its undoubtedly the best in it's class....
thank you very helpful....wish you would of included the 2014 ininity qx60

How can you put a Kia 5th and a Hyundai 3rd???
I guess you never consider how cheap they look from a mile away and they suck at durability.
Well cared Toyotas look brand new 10 years later, the upholstery feels awesomely smooth and cozy, interior plastic still intact and good looking like a Mercedes or BMW, and they drive solid, smooth and quiet.
Kia goes on 10th place.
Hyundai goes on 9th place.
Sorry but I prefer Coke over Sam's Cola, Nike over cheap Walmart shoes.
So why didn't you have the V6 Pathfinder? You have a model that does not compare well to the others. The V6 Pathfinder is a winner to me.
I'm pretty sure the Durango is not the best and Traverse isn't last.
I'll go with the Highlander :D
The Dodge Journey? Where is it, that definitely belongs on this list, high mpg, cheapest 3rd row, and a very car like feel
I’d be glad with all those futures in the p71 3:35
waiting for the new pilot and the sorento... maybe add outlander and cx-9 if you guys do this again
The Durango is BY FAR the best.
why not acura mdx and audi q7???
Um hey where is the cx-9
Really? The Dodge on 2 and highlander on 3? There goes your credibility.
Dang I really liked the explorer
Me too it should have placed higher.
+Chris McManus My family owns a 2011 Pilot, but my dad goes on a lot of office trips around the country and he's rented an Explorer several times. He says it's amazing, and I really wanna see how that car is :)
Ford in 7th.?? No way!!
There's no way in the World a Kia, Hyundai, and other SUVs up there that I can mention is better to have than, that Explorer, and Transverse.
Yet somehow the Dodge placed 2nd even though it fails in a lot of important things a crossover needs to do.
I have a hard time decide between a fully loaded ford edge sport awd and sorento se awd with five seat. I really don't know
You should get the ford edge sport awd you won't be sorry.
I agree with undefeated2012. You should get the Edge, it's pretty awesome based on my dad's test drive.
I knew Hyundai was the best
Toyota's best, I'm sure it will surpass that
The Toyota is the real winner. Lets see how the Hyundai holds up over the years compared to the highlander.
great review
~you guys sound really fare and balanced that's seems to be really rare to find these days
I can't believe traverse is in last
I just buy it yesterday
+ahmed9911able they are great cars. This comparison is pure bias
Durango and explorer are both good suvs
come on, Honda 42k Sub still use halogen light bulb, serious?
It's cheaper to replace halogen headlight bulbs 🤷🏻♂️ duh. Lol. They're only thinking about you. LMAO
Can yall do a 2015 suv comparison
Yea it is very disappointing that we forgot the cx-9
wtf. so #1 is the heaviest, slowest, most expensive??? good job guys :-S
If you have the Durango with a Hemi you should have included a Explorer Sport instead of the limited... Lame
Where is cx9?
The Santa Fe is definetly a great SUV, but I just wish they would make a v8 trim for it.
for what?
towing...
You guys are nuts you put an Hyundai and a KIA over a Traverse? Credibility distroyed for me...
Traverse? REALLY. Of course you would like Chevy. There is a reason countries around the world don't buy as many American cars as Americans import from other countries such as Japan and Germany.
Redo this comparison when the new Honda Pilot comes. My least favourite here would be the Highlander and I would prefer the Explorer or Durango.
The Ford Explorer should have been replaced with a Ford Flex. That would have made more sense. The Flex is more carbased
where is the Explorer Sport? It woulve had the most power
I though the Ford Explexer was better
good job! Hyundai rules~
