I found this sweet movie several years ago. I had never seen it but when I did, it tugged at my heart strings. Rupert became my new favorite young actor. Since then I have seen it several more times and I enjoy it even more as I age. I am now 73 so I can understand her position. Kids have their own lives and if you don't have a mate, it's hard to fit in anywhere. I'm lucky because I have always enjoyed my own company and since I've been single again for the last 18 years, it's not hard for me to live alone. I find plenty to do on my own.
I just watched the BBC's 1973 'Play for Today' version here on UA-cam and quite enjoyed it - Celia Johnson really good. I never knew there was a film version.

it's a warm wonderful movie with a cast of characters.Love it I watch it a lot.
A brilliant movie. Dame Joan and Rupert Friend are magnificent in roles that could have easily been overplayed. They both hit the exact right tone.
Beautiful novel...the film has a lot to live up to!
One of my favourites ♥️
Wonderful little movie.
Oh, please bring the whole movie back to YT!
I love Rupert Friend ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
She takes Rupert on a date that's why she takes Rupert on a date that's why she made him put on the fancy outfit😂😂😂😂😂😂
I much preferred the version with Celia Johnson. It had a tenderness and understated elegance which this version lacks. IMO
Both are good. Celia Johnson was a brilliant actress and, as you say, understated in her performances.
