- A4 4498/60007 Sir Nigel Gresley took to the mainline stage for its Inaugural mainline return. The significance of this trip would be the fact that this is the only one of a few select trips we'll see an A4 on the mainline hauling a train in Wartime Black, as the loco is due to painted back to its original B.R blue livery this Autumn/Winter. This was also a private excursion for the members of SNGLT.
Our day would start off at Winsford where the A4 was booked on the fast line out of Crewe, this had all the hallmarks for a spirited run and boy did we get it, three angles cover this, there was also a bonus 20 minutes before. After Winsford we headed north to the S&C, being as this was our only chance to see a black mainline A4, I wanted to see it pass some vintage railway infrastructure, so Settle Junction would be your best best with the backdrop of a glorious working signal box and semaphore signals. Sir Nigel eventually turned up, running late due to being held for a poxy unit to be sent out in front, so this slightly effected its approach speed to the long drag, though this didn't detract from the scene as Gresley made a superb sight passing the Box and signals. Just a few miles up the bank we see 4498 negotiating the curve to Langcliffe with the loco running well up the Long Drag to Blea Moor tunnel.
The return leg from Carlisle would see a prompt departure and coinciding with this would be the arrival of better weather, though an unfortunate turn of events at Great Strickland would see a northbound Avanti Pendolino blocking most of our shot right at the crucial time, thankfully we had a static camera placed just around the corner, though luckily or unluckily the camera battery died just as the last few coaches passed the camera. A few miles further South I took position just before Shap Village for a long side on profile shot which would showcase the sleek curves of an A4. With a dramatic lifting of the conditions 4498 was gleaming nicely, though we were let down with the locomotive performance as the driver had eased her back for some reason which was surprising as its a long hard pull over Shap south. With a gusty South Westerly wind taking the sound away this slightly took the edge of the scene, though it ended with a nicely timed livestock convoy moving through the field as the last of the train passed out of shot. Our final glance of the A4 would be at Balshaw Lane Junction not Euxton as stated In the video. A brief view it may on been thought a great one as Gresley's racehorse does its thing on the Fast Line out of Preston making for another fine sight and topping off a great day on the mainline.
I hope you enjoy the video.
The one I've been waiting for the amount of effort you two put in is most appreciated. The ground you cover and locations is incredible. Superb as always and I felt for you when I watched the Great Strickland sequence. Great camera work as per usual top work and great to have the A4 back.
Simon, many thanks for your kind assessment, I'm glad you enjoyed it, I thought we'd put the extra effort in as its the only time we'll see No7 in Black on a mainline trip. Hope to catch up with you soon. Regards, Liam
Fantastic so nice to see some had the sense to save this history.
WOW! What a beautiful sight to see. Thanks. 👍🏆🇬🇧
Many thanks
Wow that was great. Well worth the effort. Many thanks indeed.
Cheers Greg, glad you thought so.
Stunning video , really enjoyed it .. thanks as always 👍🏻🚂
Thanks Sue, glad to hear you liked it. I hope you're well.
Great video, thanks. Lovely to see the Sir Nigel Gresley back on the mainline tracks. My very first model trainset was the Hornby Dublo 3-rail model of it with 3 tinplate LNER carriages (second-hand). The black livery is striking, but prefer it in LNER blue or BR livery.
My brother and I still have the Hornby A4 Sir Nigel and the Silver King model both 3 rail!
Great video, you did very well getting to so many locations 👍
One time only, mmmm 😉
Thanks for sharing
Absolutely brilliant photography and video. Thanks from Canada.
Our pleasure ! Many thanks.
Nice to see an A4 at some reasonable speed.
Thanks for sharing.
Al.
Cheers Alan, SNG was going very well in the second sequence.
An absolutely outstanding video, thank you! And I have to say Sir Nigel Gresley looks incredible in black livery!
Many thanks Matthew, we agree, the black is striking, even though its only a protective coat.
thank you MSV for all your time and effort in bringing us this much appreciated xx
My pleasure ! You're always welcome.
Entertaining video as ever. Particularly liked the shot focusing in on the engine as it majestically travelled from left to right then for a few seconds just on the wildlife, superb shot.
Brillaint video! I saw her at Carlisle!
Liam & Phil, Another action packed day with some great captures. Regards, John
Many thanks John, could of had more but for a late running Scot.
Phew I was sweating at Hackthorpe, close thing! Thank you for you email efforts, much appreciated now we don't go chasing anymore. 👍
Thank you Stuart, glad you enjoyed the video.
One of your best yet. Great camera work. Really enjoyed this
Wow, thanks ! Glad you enjoyed it Andrew.
Awesome video, Great Steam loco, nice with the animals in the foreground, too!
Thanks for commenting, much appreciated.
Fantastic video! Didn't get to see much of her myself but this made up for it. Loved the sequences at Shap South and Euxton. Regards, Dan
Cheers Dan, the A4 was a pleasing sight in the return sunshine.
A really great collection of shots, well done.
Cheers mate, much appreciated.
Excellent video Liam and Phil. Great to see SNG back on main line again doing tours. Great selection of locations. Enjoyable watching. Great days filming. Kind regards C&A

Well done congratulations the A4 performance was outstanding by the looks of it and your filming was good too
Cheers Philip, the A4 was in fine voice.
Stunning footage and superb locations chosen , really not notch video .
Very kind of you to say so, cheers Kenneth.
I’ve caught that Paignton railtour of this hst at my local station
Nicely done Liam, some lovely clips there :)
Simon
Cheers Simon, looks like you were within ear shot of the old man for the outbound and return. Glad we all got some different spots.
Great vid. I got it at Acton bridge
Cheers Kevo, almost went there, changed mind last second.
Good video :)
Beautiful videos and locations! If only the other train had not came at 6:18. Not your fault though!
Some great footage set in beautiful countryside. Thank you. Can I ask a question which has been on my mind for some time. A lot of these trains have a diesel tacked on to the back of the train. Why is this ?
In regards to this this video, the diesel was needed for the power supply to the coaches as their current generator car was being used on another excursion. It would of also helped out with the movements at Carlisle.
There goes the blue Pullman at the beginning
Lovely work. I had thought that black was only carried as NE rather than LNER. Also, the "original BR blue" - surely LNER blue?
Yes, correct. Though the black is only a protective coat, it was just decided to give it a wartime black kind of feel to it. Should be back in blue by the end of July, maybe earlier.
@@MarshSteamVideosTM Looked very smart in black. Nice filming work.
Excuse my sneeze at the very beginning, I've got hay fever. I'm glad I didn't sneeze any later, or I might have drowned out the sound of the A4. Sir Nigel Gresley is a welcome sight on the main line. I never get moments like this.
It's true then, I was told semaphore signals went up for expresses and down for slow trains in steam days! 😆
Why is it pulling a diesel electric tractor with it? Is it going for the ride or assisting the SNG?
How about that 60007 now joins 70000 with first railtour a-peace
the description says "original garter blue livery" - i thought it was going back to BR express blue
It will after it’s visit of the North Yorkshire moors railway
Yes, that is correct, description updated.
Won’t be long now until the engine will go back to 60007 it’s appropriate number and the appropriate livery of br express passenger blue livery
Personally speaking, I would prefer the Garter Blue and LNER insignia…
@@struck2soon
Totally agree!
Garter Blue would be brilliant 👍☺️
👌🏻
Why the Diesel?
Coach lighting/heating/power and if necessary due to the route it assists with shunting moves at stations or where the train needs to reverse. Plus its 1st mainline tour out of overhaul so some insurance incase something were to go wrong
Don't like the black...
