    It is good she being honest about the situation and admits the USWNT has been left behind. But she isn’t a miracle worker, there are fundamental issues on how American female players are developed. She is right the USWNT are victim of their success because unlike the men, the women’s game in the USA developed within it’s own American Sports bubble with over emphasis on speed and power. This worked when the rest of the world was under funded semi professional, but in the new era well funded teams from Europe bringing in the expertise from the male teams has taken the women’s game to a new level in tactics and technique and the USWNT have been left behind in their bubble. It is good someone in US has immediately identified the problems, but football is like US society, there is too much self-interest to do the right thing

      @@justinbergmans36 it is not at the bottom of barrel but it could be if more than handful of European nations start serious funding their female programs. What won the USWNT trophies in the past. Is no longer good enough now. There has been a major paradigm shift caused by the European teams,were a more technical and tactical football is needed to reach the top and the simple physical football of the USWNT will not win the big trophies anymore

      The 'speed and power' stereotype is 10 years out of date. There are plenty of skillful players in the pool, like Shaw and Macario. The USWNT have never been the US women's basketball team, which has won all the time. Germany, Norway, Japan, and Spain have had their periods of dominance. I think what's happened is that the world started to pay attention to women's soccer at a time when the US happened to be in a period of relative dominance.

    • @Delboy0
      @Delboy0 Місяць тому +6

      @@calc1657 If this is an outdated stereotype why does the USWNT have no technical passers in midfield and speedy forwards with low level technique? Did you not see the World Cup were teams learned if you play a low block defence against the USA you negate their speed and they struggle to create because they players are more reliant on their speed and power than technique. Even the football played in the NWSL is appalling and primitive kick and rush transition football that heavily relies upon speed. That is what Emma Hayes talks about when she says the lack of diversity of,play in the US women’s game.

    She's absolutely right. Reality will hit when the big teams like Spain, England, Germany, France, Japan start to be very competitive with their investments coming in. Factor in that Women's Football will be developed rapidly in other countries like the ones seen in South America and South East Asia as well due to the sudden demand and popularity, and you have a way more competitive play field where everyone has enough firepower, tactics and Training as the USWNT. Leave it to her to figure out how to make them continue to win and back her up every step of the way. She is a proven winner and she will 100% bring strong results and world cups to the USA but only if you back her. This setup is akin to the 40s Nuclear Arms race but every national team is getting the coaching, player development, training, infrastructure that the USWNT has always had and only trusting in Emma and working with her is the only way to continue winning.

    • @Brownie2102

      This is what I'm thinking though, it's the whole system needs an overhaul. It's like the men's, you need to have acadamies where they are train technique from 8 years old. Kids can get scouted from 4 years old in the mens. If the women's game goes the same way I don't see that the USWNT currently has any sort of infrastructure to accommodate this.

    No, that is just a silly narrative. The US women have never been omnipotent. Japan, Norway, Germany, and Spain have each won World Cups. The US simply have had the deepest pool of talent, which has allowed it to win more than the others. There has been a recent delayed changing of the guard. That and a spate of injuries lead to poor results. The team will recover.

      I don’t think she is necessarily talking about talent pool, I think everyone knows the US has the most and maybe best talents but in terms of coaching and club level competition the US has definitely been behind in the last few years. What does "the world has caught up" mean? If "the world" means Spain, then we are noticeably behind. We're probably like the 3rd to 5th best team in the world right now; with better management and roster selections we might move up to 2nd.

    • @Brownie2102

      No way is the USWNT straight to top 2 in the world currently just by a roster change. Look at who the USWNT has lost or drawn against in the last year and a half. When was even the last time the US beat one of the top 5 European countries? Top 2 in the short term is going to be a stretch.
      This is going to be a project. It's exciting though, I think she can make some structural changes that are really going to bring tangible long term benefits to the team. I'm just not holding my breath on the team getting gold at the Olympics. Which should be totally fine for the fans, this is a project. Don't expect the heavens or you'll be disappointed.

Spain might be a huge favourites, especially because they were controlled by numerous Barcelona players, particularly the Ballon d'Or winner Bonmati. In addition, France would be too dangerous because, well, they have a home fans. This is just a taste of her "victim hood." She is preparing the US fans for the array of excuses she will treat us when she doesn't reach our expectations. WARNING: She is not our saviour, not in the way most people see her. Yes she was successful in England, but if you watch that league compared to others, defensive tactics are not their forté. Sure, it is a very high flying, grossly physical, and dynamic league. However, it is a league where it's ok to make mistakes, to lose possession anywhere on the field, to possess the ball without purpose, to commit fouls in dangerous areas or anywhere for that matter. The problem is that in international football all those things matter; they make a difference. As far as tactics are concerned, I think she will need to learn and adapt, or she will have a difficult time. Let's face it, the NWSL where the absolute majority of our players come from is very similar to the WSL.
