The brushes are down to about 1/4 inch of graphite remaining, so I will replace the brushes very soon. I've notices that lately the motor runs as if spinning, but the gears seem spotty about engaging. I'll check the capacitor in the morning. It's a good machine. I appreciate you posting this video.

Thank you for a very helpful video. Could you help me with searching for a suitable capacitor please, namely what specifications I have to look for? My machine starts working slowly, then stops, there’s a sound in the motor like it’s wanting to work. I got it with no information about it, motor brushes ok, motor belts are worn out, too loose (ordered new ones online but the replacements seem a poor quality plastic), and the motor housing shows it has overheated at some point to partially melt the housing. It belonged to a very old lady who had passed away… I cleaned and oiled it and mechanically it seems perfect. I’d be so happy to get it working again and I’m thinking it’d always benefit from a new capacitor anyway so your guidance is very appreciated. Thanks 🙏

Thank you so much for this video! I just purchased my own Bernina 830 out in the wild and it is remarkable shape for its age. I tested it out and it stitches like a dream! I came here to say that because of your video, I decided to check the motor brushes as explained, to find that there was only approx 3 mm left of carbon on the upper brush!! It was just about completely spent! I haven't checked the bottom one but I'm figuring it's the same. My heart dropped thinking that if I hadn't come across your vid, and heeded your suggestions, I could have just kept using the machine until I had burnt out the entire motor!! Wow! Just placed an order for some new brushes and will hold off using the machine until I've replaced them. On a similar subject, do the Bernina motors require any oil? I can't remember if you mentioned this in your vid. I know some motors benefit from a drop or two of oil every long while but I know Berninas are different than most in their engineering so I don't want to assume. Thanks and Be well!

I have a question, on the motor housing/cover, 19:26, where you plug the footpedal cable in, there are these yellow pins, i have no idea what they are called, i seem to have broken one, can you replace these? With something similar?

Thanks for this incredibly informative video! Also very helpful to hear what a normal motor sounds like. My 801 motor sounds like that on high speed. On very low sewing speed however, it sounds jerky. Is that normal?
Hi. Yes, I've experienced that as well. I think it is quite common. Not sure if there is a fix or if it's just "normal". All I can think of is to try measuring the resistor the switch connects to to see if it's in spec. Thanks.
A lot of suppressor-capacitors, made before 1980, were of the type, which absorb the moisture of the air and when they have soaked-up enough to reach the point, where they start, to conduct electric power, they go BANG! The modern ones, are much better and don't absorb moisture to the same degree. As long, as the capacity is the same, to suit the motor and sufficient room available, you can change the original ones for better ones from electronic suppliers.
You note that the capacitor needs to be replaced if it is bad, but I see from another post that the capacitor is obsolete in the Bernina 830 Record and should be removed. What does the capacitor do in the 830 Record?
Hi. I prefer that they are installed. People assume they are obsolete because they helped cut down interference with terrestrial TV transmission, which is no longer in use, and AM radio. Some old schoolers, like me, still listen to AM radio and there's nothing worse than a device spewing out RF interference. It also helps cut down on arcing between the motor brushes and the commutator. Thanks.

What a great video! On my bernina 707, the wires coming from the machine to motor are both white, and there are only two. Of course, they popped out before I could mark which went to where and now after replacing the capacitor it won’t turn on! 😭 do you have any pointers for finding a service manual for this machine, as I cannot find one anywhere. I don’t want to damage the machine by just trying random ports, so I’ll probably just need to send it to a repair shop. Anyway, thank you for the great videos!
Ok, Thankyou for this. I have the 830 model, purchased in 1975. When I am sewing, it just stops. Or, if I stop sewing and leave the machine for a minute, it won't start again. Could this be the brushes?
Yes I think I know what you mean. Check the capacitors and the motor brushes. I guess if the capacitors have been removed it could be a cause but not sure. The motor could be at fault.
I really wish I'd thought to watch your tutorial before I tried to turn on my mom's Bernina minimatic. The capacitor blew while I was reading through the manual, I managed to thread the needle before the loud bang and foul smelling smoke. Hi. The machine can still be used if the capacitor is removed and not replaced. It would pay to replace it when you can though. The only ones I have available are for the 240v versions. My email address is in the description. Thanks.
Thanks very much for the very helpful video! Just brought home a used Bernina 707 which I plugged right away because nobody told me to watch your video first and sure enough there was a pop! Have now removed the capacitor which was cracked and while the machine runs I have a different sort of problem. The machine slows down in a very consistent manner. Let's say I switch it to the slower gear with the sliding button on the back, press the pedal to max and what I see is a consisten slowing down which coincides with a full rotation of the plastic cam stack gear. Wonder if anybody has any clue what could be causing this.. The slowing down is brief and if I try to rotate the machine manually at the spot where it slows down it's very stiff.
@@InStitches Thanks very much for your prompt reply! I suspected that since the pattern is tied to one full rotation to that gear, But I am not seeing any crack on it (maybe not quite visible yet). In any event, I will plan to replace it since it will eventually break, it's just matter of time. Thanks again!
So, it was the gear! It is actually cracked! It runs smoothly now without it. Also, noticed at very, very slow speed there is a grunting sound coming from the motor. And it’s not related to any mechanical stiffness in the machine since it does it even when I remove the belt from the motor pulley and apply pressure to the pulley with my fingers. It seems this will be a problem for all these since they don’t have electronically controlled speeds and at very low speed you can expect that.

On the Bernina 830 record electronic machine, the roller of the thread winding mechanism on the bobbin does not contact the motor pulley. I can't figure out what the reason is and fix this problem. Please help with the advice!

Thanks! Quick question though, I have a 830 now that is a bit rough at low RPM. The I cleaned the motor and such, and the brushes look great. Could a bad motor capacitor cause it to be rough at low speed? It runs great at medium and high speed. I get in quite a few of the 700 and 800 series Berninas in, and they generally work great. Tough old warhorses, love them.

He just explained that in that video! Check the motor and the pedal for damage on kapaciters and wiring! If you can't, let someone do it who knows how😉
I have an 830 which responds intermittently to the pedal. The machine makes all the right noise still i the motor, but nothing spins in the internal workings. If I hand wind it once, it seems to give it the will to start responding again and it'll work fine.... until a moment later when it wont start again. Any ideas on what's causing that ?

Hi I have a 831 and it has a motor speed switch on the front of the machine itself min/max. Everything sounds great when it is on max but when I switch it over to min the machine sounds like it is running rough. Any idea what the cause may be?
Hi I know this video is old but I have the same bernina sewing machine and I just opened the motor is it possible for the capacitor black wire and the blue wire of the speed to be disconnected from the terminals, ive been using the machine and its gone for servicing a few times it was my first time opening it myself and I saw that it's disconnected is this normal (I'm also not from New Zealand)
Dear Sir, I need your help to unfreeze the clutch knob on my Bernina 807 . It is so badly struck that even after using TriFlow , Blue creeper oil , CRC 5-56 & Isopropyl Alcohol it is not moving even an iota ! Could you please kindly give me few tips or what are the other options ( except taking it to the Bernina technician because they are prohibitively expensive here in U.K.! ) . Thanks.
Maybe try warming the machine up in front of a heater, not too close though. Just try to get it warm and try loosening the clutch knob while stopping the machine from turning.

Great video. You saved my day on an Elna TSP cam gear. Truly could not of done it without your help. I did change the brushes on the TSP and the motor still growls in initial start up. From 20% on it sounds great. Any thoughts. I'm not sure I'm ready to go into that motor again. Berninas motor set up is great.

It's a bunch of four capacitors and they are all readily available. You will see the values printed on the side of your capacitor set. Note there are 2 x X2 class and 2 x Y class.

Hi, thank you very much, I was able to open motor case and saw my capacitor has a crack so I will remove it. Would you please tell about the wire; white, thick one, transverse lying between the terminals just in front of the motor. Mine is burned out as my capacitor. Can I remove it too? My machine does not have speed switch.
If it's what I think it is, you'll find a resistor under the white sheath, in which case it's more than likely a discharge resistor and can be removed.

Hi, I just bought a 830 record 2ndhand. I notice when I press the pedal slightly harder at fast speed, there are flashes of light emitting from the motor. Is that something I should be concerned about? I think I might have to return the machine if the motor has some issues.
Hi, that can be quite normal although I would be checking the brushes as a matter of course. The sparking could possibly be worse than normal if the capacitors have been removed.

If you asked me 10 years ago I would say Dick Smith. Maybe Jaycar? There are four capacitors and they need to be the correct type and assembled correctly.
I just received a Bernina 830 that I bought on eBay. I oiled it per instructions. It runs but never reaches the speed it should. I checked the brushes and capacitors and they seem fine. What else should I be checking?
Maybe the mechanical parts of the sewing machine (not the motor) need oiling? The machine may be tight in which case the motor is straining to drive it? Either that or the motor is weak?

Thanks. The ones in these Bernina models are potted in resin but yes, some other models do have 'exposed to air' capacitors.

I just bought a Record 830. It is making a loud grunting noise at slow speeds that goes through the whole machine. Have you seen this issue before?

Sounds like the cam stack gear is broken. You'll be able to see a crack in it if you have a close look. Thanks.

The capacitors are not needed just to run the machine. They filter electrical noise on the line.

Thanks. I depends where you are but you could try RS Components, Mauser, Element 14 and the like.

Thanks. It's not always necessary to clean up the commutator but I would do so if it's looking like it needs it.
Hi I have a 831 and it has a motor speed switch on the front of the machine itself min/max. Everything sounds great when it is on max but when I switch it over to min the machine sounds like it is running rough. Any idea what the cause may be?

Hi I know this video is old but I have the same bernina sewing machine and I just opened the motor is it possible for the capacitor black wire and the blue wire of the speed to be disconnected from the terminals, ive been using the machine and its gone for servicing a few times it was my first time opening it myself and I saw that it's disconnected is this normal (I'm also not from New Zealand)

Dear Sir, I need your help to unfreeze the clutch knob on my Bernina 807 . It is so badly struck that even after using TriFlow , Blue creeper oil , CRC 5-56 & Isopropyl Alcohol it is not moving even an iota ! Could you please kindly give me few tips or what are the other options ( except taking it to the Bernina technician because they are prohibitively expensive here in U.K.! ) . Thanks.
Maybe try warming the machine up in front of a heater, not too close though. Just try to get it warm and try loosening the clutch knob while stopping the machine from turning.

The carbon brushes should be available from your sewing machine dealer.
Great video. You saved my day on an Elna TSP cam gear. Truly could not of done it without your help. I did change the brushes on the TSP and the motor still growls in initial start up. From 20% on it sounds great. Any thoughts. I'm not sure I'm ready to go into that motor again. Berninas motor set up is great.

I was wondering if you could explain/show where to purchase a new one? Is it a case of just searching online for a capacitor with matching numbers? Any help would be appreciated.
It's a bunch of four capacitors and they are all readily available. You will see the values printed on the side of your capacitor set. Note there are 2 x X2 class and 2 x Y class.

Seems to still run, it blew the bulb too. Can’t read values on the capacitor block.
Wiring colour scheme is same here in U.K. as yours in NZ.

Apologies...ignore my lazy moment about X and Y class capacitors..I just googled it..me being a lazy @@£$. Think I have got a good enough view of your video to see the capacitor values 0.02 microF and 200puff.
Will have to strip the old one to see the wiring.

Hi, thank you very much, I was able to open motor case and saw my capacitor has a crack so I will remove it. Would you please tell about the wire; white, thick one, transverse lying between the terminals just in front of the motor. Mine is burned out as my capacitor. Can I remove it too? My machine does not have speed switch.
If it's what I think it is, you'll find a resistor under the white sheath, in which case it's more than likely a discharge resistor and can be removed.

Hi, I just bought a 830 record 2ndhand. I notice when I press the pedal slightly harder at fast speed, there are flashes of light emitting from the motor. Is that something I should be concerned about? I think I might have to return the machine if the motor has some issues.
Hi, that can be quite normal although I would be checking the brushes as a matter of course. The sparking could possibly be worse than normal if the capacitors have been removed.

If you asked me 10 years ago I would say Dick Smith. Maybe Jaycar? There are four capacitors and they need to be the correct type and assembled correctly.
14:40 brush and spring pulled out of housing
I just received a Bernina 830 that I bought on eBay. I oiled it per instructions. It runs but never reaches the speed it should. I checked the brushes and capacitors and they seem fine. What else should I be checking?
Maybe the mechanical parts of the sewing machine (not the motor) need oiling? The machine may be tight in which case the motor is straining to drive it? Either that or the motor is weak?
Did you switch the max switch at the bottom of the front of the machine? (below the stitch change knobs)
