I grew up watching the Laser Show and still get goosebumps each time they do the carving. Without a doubt the best part of the show and a great southern tradition! Thanks for posting. :)
My favorite along with the Star Spangled Banner finale. They still do this as of last year. Loved the part where Lee's broken sword becomes the reUnited States. Always brings a tear to my eye.
I can't believe people want to take down history. As someone leaning left. I loved these shows. Highlight the struggle to a great nation, not just the good. Racist statues or not, theses "traitors" were Americans at heart. A traitor is what we as revolutionists were born from. Slavery was evil, and yet let this monument and others like it stand, to show how good Americans can be trapped by a systemic issue. Right or left, we are ALL good Americans at heart.
Many of the Confederate officers did not agree with slavery. In fact, many of them went to school with the men who would lead the north and considered each other to be good men. Robert E. Lee and many others did not return to the south to defend slavery, but to defend their neighbors, family, and friends, and their homeland in a time of war. The history of the confederacy is half of the history of the United States Civil War and should not be erased, nor should the lives lost in the shaping of our great nation be forgotten. We are all the products of the struggle of our nation's past.
I'm glad this version of the show was recorded, I was there recently, & they BUTCHERED IT. Whole big section was cut, including the broken sword! The symbology was completely lost. T___T
Stone Mountain got this idea from the Eiffel Tower's laser show they hold every year on Bastille Day. Georgia also gave France ideas too. Georgia has class.
The Civil War or the second revolution was not fought over slavery, it was because of it though that the slaves won their freedom. We are not the Taliban where they destroy ancient religious monuments. History needs to be preserved so we learn from our mistakes not stick out heads in the sand.
@under5taker678 I will probably forget some of them but here's what I can remember... Mike Oldfield - Sunjammer (Instrumental) Ray Lynch - Celestial Soda Pop (Instrumental) Jerry Lee Lewis - Great Balls of Fire ESPN Jock Jams (featuring We Will Rock You, Dr. Who, All Star, etc.) The Devil Went Down To Georgia - Charlie Daniels American Trilogy - Elvis Presley Jump Jive & Wail - Brian Setzer Orchestra Georgia On My Mind - Willie Nelson/Ray Charles more to follow...
@under5taker678 Some of these were rotated throughout those years... Mambo #5 - Lou Bega That Don't Impress Me Much - Shania Twain God Bless The USA - Lee Greenwood They also did a song that had a medley of several Southern songs but I'm not sure of the years they did it. It featured "Midnight Train To Georgia, Sweet Home Alabama and Rocky Top". Hope this helps. I remember because I was searching forever for the name of Tubular Bells and Celestial Soda Pop. emailed the park for help.
I know this comment is 13 years old and there's no telling if you still use this account or are even alive, but I stumbled across another more recent video that captured the Rocky Top show and wanted to share. ua-cam.com/video/3Vr0e37kr8Q/v-deo.htmlsi=CsHZ5bx4EN6Vl6Em
Having been raised in the South, I never understood why the people who lived in the Southern States just do not get over this period of time and simply move on. I guess what I am saying is that I understand the History involved in the Civil War and those who fought in it. However, this is the past. The South lost the war and the North won the war and we are all better off because of it. Let's all move on can we. I guess if I could put it in Southern States term. It is like the Daytona 500. If Dale Earnhardt won the race and let's say Jeff Gordon lost. Why celebrate Jeff Gordon. The race is a over and that is the end of it. Can we all just move on and leave the past behind us. This is our movement in time and we should all make the best of it. Thanks and God Bless.
It's such a shame that they did away with this. I just went to the "new and improved" light show a couple weeks ago, and however entertaining it is, it just isn't meaningful like it used to be.
Ive seen this show twice in my life and I love it when the mountain comes to life while Elvis is singing Trilogy

Thank you. That doesn't sound like much, but this Southern woman thanks you from the bottom of her heart, for capturing this memory.

Being from the south I don’t agree with what the south did trying to break a nation apart but on the other hand it’s hard not to sing this song

Imagine how awkward it would be if you was sitting next to a black family lol
you'd both likely be ignorant. People in GA don't think so well.
