- With the recent sad news that Avro Vilcan XH-558 is no longer to fly, I dug out this footage from my Archives, of this much loved plane performing at a rare open day at the now closed RAF Station at St Athan, in the Vale of Glamorgan in South Wales.
The material was captured on VHS tape, and therefore isn't to the quality we now get from cameras, but hopefully, you will look back at this material, which is nearly 25 years old and enjoy the spectacle of XH 558 doing a flying display.
Very impressive Vulcan. Bautiful airshow. Thank you, Bob for allowing ustosee the planes become vert rare today. Cyfeillgarwch. Philippe
+Philbru Production Thank you Philippe, as this year was the last time this Plane was flying, I thought this old footage might be good to share.....Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda i ch ach teilu....Bob
Very well captured for 25 years ago Bob , pity they have decided to take the last one to be mothballed ..its was a sight to be seen for all those years ..you did well with this very steady hand ...Dave
+David Howarth Thanks Dave, it was always a crowd pleaser wherever it flew, and will be greatly missed by many now it's been grounded....Bob
Very good film from the archives Bob. I really regret never having seen this wonderful machine in action
+acw71000 Thanks Austin, once seen, never forgotten...there's nothing else quite like it, and as you're aware, will no longer take to the skies....Bob
What an amazing display of flying skill you captured there Bob. And to think; we will never see the like of it again. But as the XH-558 team say themselves; 'Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened'. Thank you for this fantastic film, Bob. It's going straight into my favourites - permanently. Kind regards Frank.
+TheDoodyman Thanks Frank, I've loved seeing this plane many times over the years, and it is such a shame that we won't see it flying again.....Very Best Wishes...Bob
remember seeing them way back,,a nice plane Bob,,hope they keep them fliying,,,nice video
+David Frobel Unfortunately, this was the only flying example still operational, now it's been grounded and will not take to the air any more...Bob
Magnificent, Bob. Still great movie quality, even from VHS. Brought back happy memories of the airshows at St. Athan, where I first saw a Vulcan. That was in the days when there was less regulation, and Hawker Hunters would do low level passes over the spectators! Great fun....Mervyn
+Mervyn Partin Thanks Mervyn, I don't know if there were any further Shows at St Athan after this one. The whole footage contains some great planes flying at the time....may upload at some time in the future....All the best...Bob
@@robmasterman I believe the last St Athan show was was circa 1994, the year I went back to West Camp and the year the Russians came...
Thank you for this footage, I hadn't been to an Airshow in a while, my then girlfriend badgered me into taking her in 1991. I didn't remember that 558 was the Display Vulcan. I seem to remember this one was a rare beautiful day.
Saint Athans, museum as it was then, put IWM and Cosford to shame. When they disbanded it, almost all our Aircraft went to them..
Excellent footage of this splendid aircraft Bob....
+JPMiller14 Thanks Justin, I've taken several clips of this crowd puller over the years, and I thought one of my earliest was a good place to start...Bob
Fabulous Footage at a top RAF Base.. the Halcyon Days of Air Displays..
Thanks dee dee, the Vulcan was always a favourite of mine at Displays...They were happy days.
Glad you found the footage; not many of us had videos 20 yrs ago. As a matter of interest I was on the bridge by St Athan last week videoing the 37s and was approached by their security. politely, but how times have changed
+Mike Wilcock Thanks Mike, I've been approached a few times over the years on that bridge at St Athan, although not an operational RAF Base now, there is still work going on there, hence their touchiness....Bob
Superb archive footage Bob, and a well timed upload with the last one no longer to fly. Excellent camera skills as always. Regards, Jeff.
+bobnweaver Thanks Jeff, old VHS Tape, but 25 years on, worth an airing...A sad loss to the Air Show Circuits...Regards...Bob
A great video of this beautiful plane,it will be missed by many now that she has been retired. When we were a lot younger my dad was in the RAF and we were stationed at Cottesmore and they had Vulcans and Victors at this base with a visit from some Valiants.I have heard they might be bringing a Concord out of retirement,we can wish....Regards Chris.
+wooltman Wonderful stories Chris, this old favourite will be sadly missed...a great crowd pleaser...Best wishes...Bob
Great footage of this Icon of the sky Bob. Shame she won't be flying again. C&A
+EMuksteam Indeed, and as this goes back many years, I thought it was worth sharing...Many thanks.....Bob
I was at this show! I believe Robert you are right that this was the last show there, as I can't remember there being a later one (I think the shows were bi-yearly at St Athan?). I recall the noise of the Vulcan being absolutely deafening but was also suprised by the noise of a Harrier whilst hovering. Highlight for me that year were the 6 Sepecat Jaguars doing a mock bombing run on mocked up armour at the far end of the airfield. I have many photos somewhere of that day. VHS video and Hi8 camcorders still cost the earth in the early ninties bt would have loved to own one back then. Thanks for digging up some old memories for me. John.
Hello John, thanks very much for your kind comments which are greatly appreciated. My son was to join the RAF, so we visited several Air Shows at this time. The Vulcan was an awesome machine, and always put on a great show for the audience. Regards...Bob
i was at this display, still remember the vulcan display and it leaving st athan. it went straight into a power climb, we could hear it 5 minutes later
+Chris Collier Yes it was a great day, and so sad the St Athan will no longer see Air Shows....I have more footage taken at St Athan from that show....may upload it at some time.....Thanks for watching...Bob
That was one amazing video Bob....Well done for digging this one out of your archives !! I remember RAF St Athan well, and have been there a few times...Shame it's gone now. Some great variety of Aircraft there on the Day..including the Lancaster. We'll turn you in to a Aviation enthusiast yet...ha ha....You've even got the famous Vulcan Howl as it started it's takeoff run at the beginning ...awesome....1991 seems only just a few Years ago...My youngest Daughter was born that Year..i'll have to call her vintage...lol...Best wishes...Steve.~
+Steve Lewis Video Channel. Thanks Steve, I'll give you a DVD of the whole event when I see you tomorrow....this old Vulcan was an amazing thing to watch...Best wishes...Bob
Thanks ......See you then ...
Very nice footage video Bob! She was a beautiful bomber :o)
+Larry R Wendell Jr The sights and sounds of this plane were unforgettable Larry, and will be greatly missed now she's been grounded.....Regards..Bob

I didn't know that Dave, looks like this one will also be runway use only in the foreseeable future...All the Best...Bob
Hi Bob, yes both on youtube , southend don't know if it ran up the runway this year was out doors on display..Cheers ..Dave
Lovely, I was lucky enough to see the old lady on her last visit to South Wales last summer. She came down from St. Athan over Llantwit Major beach, wonderful still.
Is the Mossie @ 1:35 RR299, HT-E?
Appropriate if so as the Vulcan trust is looking to hook up with the People Mosquito project.
Many thanks again
+hughcdavies Thanks Hugh, unfortunately I'm unable to confirm the identitu of the Mosquito for you, but with so few about it could well be the one you've suggested.....I've see the Vulcan many times over the years.....the last time was at RAF Brize Norton at a Families Day a few years back....Best wishes...Bob
Great footage Robert, saw the Vulcan Flying over Stoke-by-Clare towards Castle Hedingham a few weeks ago great sight which will sadly end all too soon.Still hobbling, hows your leg?
+vince halls Thanks Vince, I didn't see it on it's final tours, but thankfully I have seen it many times over the last twenty five years or so.....The leg is coming along fine thanks, final Hospital visit in two weeks time...Bob
Was this the day the Vulcan engines on the starboard flamed out ?
Not to my knowledge, she gave a faultless display on that day.
