I wish they had done a better job in the movie of explaining why Scott was in prison. There's the small news article about the events the prequel comic covers. Basically, Scott found evidence that the company he worked for was scamming their customers. I think it was an insurance company. So, he used his skills to transfer company funds to all those people; but he was also caught since corporate espionage is still a crime. One of the reasons he did it was because he wanted to be able to look his daughter in the face while teaching her to always do the right thing.

Like, they wrote the sin where "This movie doesn't explain why the ants obey Pimm!" only for the next bit to be "Oh, they did explain it. My bad!" sounds like something you'd do whilst watching the film first time around. But they kept it in anyway, despite the fact it doesn't sound at all professional in criticising the movie (if you wanted to take them as "critics"), nor was it really that funny (if you want to take them as "comedians/trolls/assholes")

The thing is, mass is different from weight. Mass is the density of the atoms while weight is the pull of gravity. If a heavy object were to get smaller whilst retaining its mass, it would have a much smaller pull on gravity making the 10 ton tank, a 10 oz tank. While giant man has the same mass as a regular sized man, the gravity on him would increase granting him the ability to crush objects and do heavy punches. For instance, take a balloon filled with hydrogen. The mass of the balloon and gas stay the same even as you put more in, however, it's weight changes depending on how much is in there.

      @angusperson4222 Рік тому

@@starcycle4308 this is a response to all the comments saying that the movie gets the science wrong. This comment claims the science is right.
@Andreww450 is making the distinction between mass and weight. While most people consider them interchangeable (because in 99% of cases outside of academic physics they are), they technically are not.
Mass is how many atoms are in a given space. Weight is how hard atoms pull on each other because of gravity. That's why a person weighs 60% "less" on the moon, despite not actually changing that much.
With that in mind, while antman can keep the same mass, his weight does change as he changes size, which is why he can carry a tank in his pocket or sit on an ant without crushing it.
Andrew then uses a balloon as an example.
Please note, I am not an expert, this is just my understanding of the original comment. I could be entirely wrong.

Your ant math is pretty accurate but it'd be better to do a volume calculation for the ants, assuming each ant is 10mm³ in size and needs about the same volume of air and the same volume of structural support within the colony. 1,000,000 ants is 30,000,000mm³ or a colony about 30 litres in volume, to sustain a colony that size a few hundred m² of hunting territory is required or to supply the ants with food, either would be relatively easy for a rich man like Pim. While this is a large colony its not unfeasible.

The largest known ant colony was estimated to contain 300+ million ants in an area of 3 sq km. Black carpenter ants can have colonies up to 100,000 ants. So it's not unreasonable to assume that Hank Pym has ant colonies which number in the tens of thousands. In which case getting a number as low as 247 is indeed incredibly unlikely.

This movie plays pretty fast and loose with the Mass/Weight "rule" simply for the visual gags. Like the Thomas the Tank Engine crashing through Cassie's bedroom wall and into the street shouldn't have happened if the Thomas weighed the same as it did at its original size. Scott also wouldn't be able to stand on Luis' shoulder when he revealed to the group that he can shrink. A lot of the TinyBig visual gags wouldn't work if they followed the rule they set for the physics (When Cross gets stuck in the bug zapper, that thing should have been destroyed on impact if he had the same mass and weight as he usually does.) I don't know if there would be a difference between the functionality of the suit and the functionality of the Pym Particle Discs, which is what Hank and Hope use to enlarge the tank (Also presumably what shrunk the tank). Probably not, since the tech all uses the Pym Particle. Dunno. It does seem like a plot hole, but I'm also sure there's a justification for it beyond the visual gags.

6:28 is even more sciency than you might realize. If he DOESN'T change a variable, it still is. In fact, it might be even moreso because of that. Testing something once and it not working isn't a good result(Not because it didn't work, but because there's not enough data). You want to test something multiple times on a group to try to weed out the possibility of variables you couldn't already account for, perhaps a genetic predisposition to turning into goo when exposed to the Pym Particle or something. So you do tests with a LOT of test subjects(Like feeding a TON of rats a new food to see what happens) to account for the percentage likelihood of a failure versus a success.

This is where overall strength is related to the cross-sectional area of muscle and not muscle mass, but as it increases overall weight increases much faster. This is why smaller animals are proportionally stronger. This coupled with some increased density (but not 100% increase) seems a better explanation for ant-mans durability when tiny and why he's not like styrofoam when big, as well as the tank not weighting a ton when small.

12:34 What if it's not a full-size tank that was shrunk, but a model tank that was enlarged? The expansion would make it less dense and fall more slowly; increasing the occupants' chances of surviving the fall. …Yeah; I'm pretty sure at this point that it was a model tank that Hank enlarged.

When power is returned to it, it displays a flashing 12:00, no matter what time it is. It really just shows it had lost power and doesn’t have the time and needs reset. So it’s not the proper time, it’s just telling you it needs reset.... but yeah I guess.

12:26jay says that hank shouldn’t be able to carry around a tank if it retains its mass, but it clearly has a chain on it like toys. The actual sin should have been on the fact that the tank should be so not dense that there is no way that it could at all effect its surroundings like crashing though a wall.

  • @viliphied

Their deus ant machina sin was a missed sin. The problem isn’t that the ants are miraculously able to jam the hammer of the gun, which actually somewhat makes sense in-universe. The problem is that the gun the guy is holding doesn’t actually have a hammer (it’s fired by a striker, which is housed inside the slide, which ants wouldn’t be able to get into)

  • @imkluu

I am not sure if they say that a shrunk target maintains the same mass or if it can maintain the same mass. It seems clear that the Pym particle that allows the shrinking as well as the growth, can be used to manipulate size and mass. It is linked in some way to the Quantum realm where physics are different than in our own and allows either to maintain mass at a smaller size or put on mass in a larger size as well as shunt off mass when shrunken, allowing for much longer leaps, or holding much more massive weights in smaller sizes, thus the tank as a key chain. The thing that gets me is that the enlarged to full size Tank still has a key chain connected which is relative to its new size. This would be the sin. Why did he have to have a giant key chain made to connect to the tank? Just shrink the tank with its massively reduced weight and connect it to a normal key chain.
It is demonstrated in the movie; such as jumping up on to the targets gun and then running along their arm. If they were at full weight they would just cause the man's arm to be pushed down and Ant-Man would fall to the floor. While leaping and landing, running on the gun he is at a tiny mass but then puts on full mass just before or at the time of punching the man in the face. This is also why in tiny form while trying to jump thru the key hole, he wans't punching holes in or breaking the door when he missed. It is also a reason for practicing this trick as he needed to regulate not only size but mass as well.
These Pym particles and the manipulation of them are fantastic things.

10:45 Counter-argument to this counter-argument: Provided that we see Wanda Maximoff having her own room at the Avengers compound in Civil War, I think it's safe to assume she lives there. If somebody with supernatural abilities comes crashing into the place, it would make sense for her to join in, especially if Falcon has trouble dispatching the threat on his own. Hell, matter of fact, Scarlet Witch being a psychic would be the perfect pick to use against Scott, since once she grabbed a hold of him with her telekinetic powers he'd probably be screwed, Ant-Man tech or not.

The physics of Ant Man have been a highly contested point for the last 2.5 years, and my personal opinion is that the Pym Particles do not alter your density, instead converting mass into energy and vice versa. They are able to store energy and convert it into mass when needed, which explains how tanks that have been shrunk to the size of a keychain do not still weigh tons, or how a fully grown human can stand on the barrel of a pistol without his weight pushing it to the floor.

It’s actually interesting about the tank thing. Who’s to say Hank didn’t take a plastic toy tank, expanded it, tinkered with it to being able to plow through concrete and steel, then shrunk it down to the point where it’s a fraction of the weight of an actual tank.
Thoughts? I know it’s not perfect, because the ratio would have to be specific numbers that may not agree with each other, but it’s something to think about.

    • @Powerofthewaaagh

I don't think that really works, because enough mass to break through a wall means enough mass to be completely unuseable as a keychain.
That being said, Civil War establishes explicitly that the tech can be used to grow stuff without becoming extremely "un-dense" when he uses the giant-man power. I would guess that the tank was made using a variant of that ability.

If you lie, you might get the job for a bit, but they do background checks up the ass, there is no way your lie isn't gonna be discovered and you'll end up being fired.

So here for you too: Mass is NOT Weight. Thanks. mass is relative to the distance from the center of an attracting higher mass (i. e. the earths core in this instance) and the actual mass and size of the object. the tank or Scott being tiny with the same mass does not equal to them being also the same weight, as the gravitational pull on both is different from being normal size.

Gonna do a quick comment on Pym Particles. Yeah, they seem largely inconsistant, especially when shrinking down building and taking it somewhere doesn't wreck everything inside unless it was all secured somehow (It might be.). But I will say that the density thing sounds like something that Hank found a way to control and manipulate to some extent. In fact, that kind of weirdness is the only plausible explanation there is. It doesn't mean that Ant-Man could explode Thanos' ridiculously-dense-bodied ass, but I'll give it enough of a handwave to allow cars, tanks, and Giant-Man to work.
