  • A record entry that includes some seriously fast boats and hot competiton, some are saying that the Vendee Globe race record could tumble once again. Others question whether the new breed are robust enough to go the full distance while others ask whether the skippers can take the physical punishment. The bottom line is that it's going to be one hell of a race - Here's Matt Sheahan's view on some of the hot shots and why

    I don't think even Alex and his team know yet what the Hugo Boss is capable of, but we will all know soon enough. My best wishes for the "Boss" and her very personable skipper.

    I am supporting Pip on Medalia - she probably has the slowest boat, but what a spirit and fight just to get to the start line

      I approve. It looked beasty at the start. Really flat, really smooth, really fast. And led the race until the turn an hour ago ?

    L’occitane is the most underrated boat for sure. My favourite to take it this year

      It's the future of the IMOCA Class for sure, but Armel Tripon (an excellent sailor) hasn't got that much of solo racing on this boat. And those beasts are a hell to handle.

    boat, training, supplies,
    support,
    75+ days off $work
    at their respective pay levels,
    etc

    Advantage: Alex in the HUGO BOSS... watch the start and the first few days as he opens up the BOSS to performance sailing.

      Time for de-brief: Hugo Boss did not finish, Charal had to return just after race start. Of the high performance club, only Apivia could live up to its promise.

    There have been a lot of instances where technology has made a sport more dangerous whether it is auto racing or downhill skiing. These new boats are concerning for the punishment they met out to sailors which could prove to be fatal in a race of this nature. I am all for technological advancement, but they may have to institute design rules to make it safer for the sailors. It’s a great race but not one worth dying over.

    i dont think many of those foils will last in the southern ocean. do they carry spares!

    • @darraghobrien1028
      @darraghobrien1028 3 роки тому

      Alex Thomsons starboard foil actually snapped last time around but most surivie it as far as I know,. I doubt they carry spares as they're huge, and since Hugo boss were using lightweight hinges on their cupboards and using the least glue they possibly could to save weight I'd be surprised if they stuck a spare foil in there. Plus I don't see how the skipper could swap in the new one

    Didn't know they were still holding the Vendee Globe race. I can't think of anything that fills me more with a sense of awe and wonder along with equal parts fear and terror. For a really good read and sense of the race, there's a book by Derek Lundy called Godforsaken Sea all about the 1996-97 race. Excellent book.
