- Final Fantasy 16 had a lot of expectations, in this review I look at if it was able to meet them. Is it another great entry in a storied franchise? Or yet another stumble in this new modern era of final fantasy games?

What's the best Final Fantasy game?
12 gameplay , ff10 magic and fantasy wise , rest is dog shit
In my opinion it's 10. It did the best job of making a convoluted but coherent story combine with a well thought out battle system along with an insane amount of customization.
Final fantasy 9 for me. Vivi's storyline was great and touching.
But all the cast of 9 was great.
Bought the game 3 times over the years on different consoles, it's a masterpiece.
Final Fantasy 5, still playing it sometimes.
3 or 10 for me.
I totally agree with your review. I got so excited from playing the demo, so i bought it right away, but when i reached the second half of the game, it became unbearably boring, i couldn't make myself finish the game. I dropped it when other games came out like Remnant 2 and lies of P.
Yeah its a real shame how much it slowed down after the second time jump. The story is still good just a bit of a slog in the back half
I really enjoyed 16! Pretty much everything you said it correct tho, I was just a little more forgiving with it guess.
One thing that did bother me though was it felt like there was originally a deeper crafting system that got dropped mid development. So many crafting materials I had hundreds and hundreds of that really didn't do much and I was constantly finding more on the ground or being rewarded for killing enemies.
And yeah the weapons in this game were strange. I liked that the swords all had visual distinctions to make getting a new one feel cool but they just kinda linearly increased damage along with enemy health increase as you progressed, bigger numbers for the sake of bigger numbers. I also didn't understand why the damage stat and the stagger stat were always exactly the same. There was never any thought behind what sword to use, just objective upgrades as you went along.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed the game and review! Yeah the crafting definitely felt short changed. Have to wonder how much the overall vision of the game may have changed during development.
Some of my favorite FF games are FF13, FF10, FF8. these games really made an impact on me. Definitely FF10. But for the all the 3 games have great story and gameplay.
FF10 is my favorite and I also really enjoyed the 13 series more than others seemed to. I especially thought 13-3 was great. Arguably the best soundtrack of the entire FF series as well.
I just find it a complete anomaly. FF7R set up the foundation to make this game shine...... and they didn't use any of it.
I would really love to learn more about this game's production behind the scenes.
Yup. I can see wanting to change the combat a bit if they really wanted to focus the game on Clive (which they did). I dont know that FF7R combat works as well with only 1 party member. But still there should have been a better middle ground between that game and what we got.
16 is one of the best to me. Maybe if you binge the game in one sitting, you notice pacing more. But for me, it took me 3-4 weeks of playing and exploring which I feel was the right amount of time in between game sessions to where I didn't get bored, was still engaged and nothing really felt tedious
Glad you enjoyed it so much! I did play it over the course of a few weeks, maybe it's that I always felt like I needed to do all the side quests as they popped up and always felt that took me away from the main narrative for just a little longer than was comfortable
Can I ask what you feel about FF7 Remake and the upcoming FF7 Rebirth. I think they nailed the combat system in that game with the perfect hybrid approach. There’s party members, traditional summons, elemental weaknesses, ATB, and the materia system. It’s fantastic and my favourite combat system in not just any FF game but any video game. It’s sad that FF16 lacks so many of these and I think FF7 Remake combat should be the future of the series
I loved it! FF7R was on my top games list last year you can find the video on my channel. Personally I still prefer the classic turn based but I agree, the games combat was the perfect way to do "real time" combat while still having it feel like a traditional FF game. Very excited for rebirth
As soon as I heard this game "scaled back the RPG elements" I kind of lost interest.
When I think Final Fantasy I think of FFX or VII, with at times frustratingly deep systems like materia or sphere grids, summons and customization like making Mr. MCswordboi into a mage because it's my game and that's what I felt like doing...
Yeah the lack of depth was really depressing because they showed with FF7R that you can still have that type of thing with more action oriented gameplay. In not sure why they thought such linear progression was the right decision
Oh hey, your video showed up on my recommended. Right on. Watching it now.
Oh! Is that a new mic I hear :D Maybe not, but you did change some options I can tell.
They didn't give me Agni's Philosophy, so Squenix is dead to me :D THAT and they screwed me over with FF15. I won't ever forgive them for stringing me along.
Final Fantasy 10 is most definitely the best Final Fantasy game EVER.
Squenix is to blame for FF's downfall. Square Soft is where it was at.
thanks for checking it out! Hard agree on FFX, game's GOATed. Yeah a real shame that's happened with the company and series
Realest review, may needa get a ps5 just for this game now
You are right! FF4 FF6 FF7 FF8 FF9 FF10 were the best. FF went down hill after that.
Trying new things and seeking new challenges is the identity of FF.
I love this FF. Is it my favorite (no). But, I do believe it is a good addition to the series. With that being said, here are my issues with the game.
First they have pacing issues. They brought MMO side quest style to a single player game (not a good decision). Second, the had main quest that should have been side quest and they had side quest that should have been main quest. After you swap those out (you know which ones I am talking about) you can get rid of the rest of the side quest. They had a crap ton that was pointless and the reward was a crafting material that you already had like 500 of (which made it even more pointless). Last is you need to pick a lane. Ether be a RPG or be an action adventure. They could have fixed this by just making elements and status ailments during combat a thing. This would have brought a lot more strategy to combat and also would make weapons more important except just a power up in attack and or defense for armor. These things would have made it more of a RPG and would have been more faithful to FF. The other options would be to get rid of half the weapons and armor (have like only 6 or 7). Those six or seven weapons would have a different combat style (like a bow, axe, two handed sword, one handed sword and shield ect..). This would have leaned more into an action combat / action adventure.
Everything else in the game I loved. Examples are that it has by far one of the best stories in all of the FF (Only two stories are better is 6 & 7). Also it has the second the best combat (I think FF7R has the best combat by far). Last, It does have the best score of all the FF. Great Game!!!
I think it's impossible to say it's not a real Final Fantasy, because it's really only Square-Enix that can determine that but it's certainly not a real RPG, JRPG, or even an ARPG. It's far from a bad game, but it's pretty much just a solid 7/10(or 8/10, depending on taste) in all areas but padded out much too long. It's what you get if you streamline a Devil May Cry to significantly reduce difficulty and variety but forcibly slow the pacing down to hit a JRPG-like run time.
Yeah it's hard to understand who this game was really meant for. like you say it scratches the surface of some genres but doesn't get deep enough into any to really have an identity
At least we got tales of arise dlc that was pretty fun.
Yeah that really came out of nowhere! I haven't had a chance to get to it yet but hoping to soon
The reality is Final Fantasy is not being made for traditional Final Fantasy fans anymore - at least if they continue in the FF16 direction. I see tons of comments online of people who loved FF16. Usually these are people who weren't fans of FF10 or before. I bought FF16 hoping the combat system would grab me but I didn't get half way through before I put it down and moved on to other games.
Square wants to capitalize on name recognition and make the most wide appealing combat system... although ironically they went with DMC combat which I don't think has ever been more main stream than Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy is no longer for me and that's okay. Team Asano is my haven for traditional JRPGs now.
Side note - I saw other comments about FF7 Remake here and wanted to talk about it too. I loved the combat but hated the game. The game is 50% filler content all so they could break it into parts and milk their fans for more money and I can't stand that. I didn't mind the twist at the end, but also feel like it's deceptive for a game called Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Yeah I know how you feel. Which is a bummer since this is the series I grew up playing and loving. I thought ff7r felt complete enough as a standalone but agree it was a little scummy to split it up into multiple games
I wish this final fantasy 16 should be a spin off, like Dirge of Cerberus FF7. And the real FF16 is a turn based. I do like 16, spend a deluxe edition. They are already milking the franchise with dash 2 and spinoff. Seems like they got the budget. Why not make a turn based and action. It’s a win-win situation.
Actually a great idea. I know they've tried to make game universes for their last few entries, surprised they didn't here. Would have been cool to see another game tackling the history of 16s world, or even a sequel of sorts.
Great Review, your voice is great and your style solid. I see you hitting 20k subs no problem 👍
Suggestions:
- i really liked your story/franchise points and views but you didn't talk a lot about each one. As a listener i like to have a topic be just in the room for a minute so it doesn't flash by
- more precise editing to underline and differentiate your points (like clips from other FFs or playing a bit of the Ost you praised)
- some soft humor if you like that(?)
- that scrolling score and font at the end were funny and retro
- ending words were a bit standard
Just feel free to do what you want and be unique. Good luck mate 🗿
Glad you enjoyed it! Maybe one day we'll get that sub count up. Also appreciate the feedback
Nice review!
Thank you!
I really enjoyed 16, to me was the game of the year , and as a guy who grow up playing turn-base jrpgs ( i'm 33 now , i've been playing FF and other jrpgs since i had snes ) i thank god that big titles do more action oriented ( or semi-action) because i burned out my soul out of turn-base rpgs, i can't even play a game like Attelier withouth sleeping , that's the main reason that i didn't buy baldurs gate , i just can't feel the joy of playing a turn-base game anymore.
I'm glad you liked it so much! I'm fine with them changing the combat I just found 16s a little mindless and unengaging. As for baulders gate I think the story telling and presentation more than make up for any negatives you may think turn based may be. If definitely give it a chance if you're into traditional role playing and DnD
You should complement this video with how you’d improve this. What would make a great FF today, true to its origins and fun.
I haven’t played XVI yet (thank you, work), but if I had to say what would make a great FF to me, today, it’d be keep creating these amazing worlds and lore (I’ve loved all the “recent ones” XIII through to everything I’ve seen of XVI), keep the amazing music, keep the amazing visuals, art styles and grand cinematic moments. Please, improve the side content, not a fetch quest ever again please, make them story, character, or mechanics development relevant; longer, more intricate, fun to play side stories that make you see something new of the world and its inhabitants, that show a new side of your characters, or that give you some extra bonus for the final battle that you wouldn’t have otherwise, those are valuable side quests.
As for the combat, imo, the most fun I’ve had with a combat system in FF was XIII. I know they went full action because in recent years some loud people thought turn based was boring, but look at Larian games, so much fun. Turn based can be really fun and to me, FFXIII was awesome in that regard, it felt strategical when you decided which combination of paradigms you built and it felt tactical when you were optimizing your action use. I’m sure a modern version of that could potentially be great.
I actually think they did a decent job honoring the past FFs as far as the games story and music is concerned. Like I said I just felt it was a little overlong and bloated. I'd have liked more depth to the character progression and builds. I think this action setup could have worked but as executed was just a bit shallow and unengaging.
I really enjoyed 13s combat as well, specifically 13-3. I think that's a better blueprint for single character with multiple "forms" combat. Would have been cool for 16 to iterate and evolve that formula compared to what we got.
But based on your discussion I think you will really enjoy 16. All the pieces are there they just don't come together as well as their potential indicates
@@capn_sarge gotcha! I always keep hoping the next FF will deliver the ultimate experience that we’ve been waiting 😅
I am really looking forward to playing XVI. I understand better what you say about an action oriented gameplay benefiting from builds or “multiple forms”. You’re right, that’s been one of the best things from games like Souls, Elden Ring and BG3. Maybe FF could try again the paradigm or the jobs systems from the past to allow us to play our own way. Be it that they continue down the action alley or they decide to retry with turn based combat.
7,8 and 9 are the best. 7 Og
This wouldve been a great game if it was called vagrant story 2 or anything else..
The name Final Fantasy.. especially a mainline final fantasy comes with so much expectations..and history..
I see what you're saying but I did try to go into the game with an open mind and review it for what it was, not what the series used to be.
Clive isnt the chosen one, he is The Avatar, master of all summons
No Aang is the avatar. Able to bend all the elements
Tbh i understand that long time fans dont like the future approaches and dont like the action combat and so on.
But the developers decide what ff is.
We can have our opinions but they can do the f they want.
I personally liked the old games story's, characters and music but the turn based stuff doesnt fit for me to this world. Prefer the action combat much more.
yoshi p is ff nowdays for me
I get that the devs can make the game they want, but I do think its fair for fans to look at a series of games, and understand the characteristics that are shared across them all. The series at one point had an identity and when a new game comes out that doesn't share that identity it's easy to say it doesn't "fit in" with the others. Arguing over the verbage you're supposed to use to convey that feels pedantic to me.
That said glad you're enjoying the new direction for combat! If one thing has held steady over the series, it's presentations characters and stories are usually the strong suit
@@capn_sarge u also have to set things in perspective. In the past they don't had the technology to make games with open worlds and fast paced action combat. Maybe they would've done that if they could.
I agree to some extent that they have to respect the fans and theyr origins.
We don't have to have the same opinions, games change over time and so do franchises and IP's. Some are more pleased than others.
But I would love to see if they go both ways , some games more based on the original games and the new ones. Maybe they can live side by side together.
one of the most badass games i’ve played since gow on original release. Play for the story. It’s a great linear action combat game.
Glad you enjoyed the game so much!
I would like this game better if it was not a mainline FF game.
Same
its Tales of Arise
You know now that you mention it the gameplay and general themes and high level plot points are fairly similar between the two games
@capn_sarge yes that's what I mean, playing 16 after a few hours did not feel new to me. I said to myself i already played this, and tales of arise which I just played a year ago late came to mind.
Its a good game
9:05 This is my exact same opinion
Yeah its a real shame. There have been glimmers of hope here and there but hopefully they can right the ship soon.
The statements you make on the gameplay, side missions, combat, and story tell me you haven't actually played this game.
The game absolute shite
So……a 2nd FF game I won’t be getting back to back……dragon quest it is then. They need to get back to their roots, because imo they’re ruining FF.
Idk that I'd go all the way to ruining just yet, but the series definitely feels like it's lost its identity a little
@@capn_sarge they definitely haven’t been giving the series the attention it deserves. It’s been around so long they’ve just been phoning it in so to speak. At least that’s my opinion. I just hope they get back to their roots a bit and figure it all out. The battle system looks way too simplified for what they’re going for imo. Maybe I’m just getting old and want FF to be challenging lol. It seems like they took out in-depth mechanics and just focused on the cinematic portion instead of both.
How about we just go back to turn based and story oriented. You know, back when it was good. Cough cough Lost Odyssey a spiritual successor.
Lost odyssey is so good its unreal. To this games credit they did focus on story and characters, and mostly nailed it but then added a bunch of bloat that dragged it down
yikes, im sorry. but 15 was alot and I mean a lot worse than this. from fighting the camera , to potion- spamming your way through any content, to the half-ass story, (which is the most grievous error in the game), to the horrible characters who had hardly any development (except the DLCs) def deserves to be called the worse in the franchise.
FF is first and foremost about the story, any battles systems complaints makes me roll my eyes because guess what, things change- and are no longer limited by consoles like they were when the series 1st started. I remember when people were complaining about the junction/draw system in 8, the sphere grid in 10, or the people complaining about the FF7r battle system. People dont like change, whelp they need to get with the times.
This was the best game since 10, not withstanding 14 and 7R is a sequel, of sorts
I will say there are somethings that needed to be tightened up or even expanded upon but the story itself and combat is solid.
I dont think I shared my opinions on 15 in the video but I want that big a fan of it either. I did really enjoy the opening few hours of it though. The world felt fresh and I really enjoyed driving around with the boys with the older game soundtracks on the radio. But I agree the combat was also not that great, most of the boss fights felt on rails. Story wasn't complete and the ending couple hours were a huge slog.
While I agree story is important to FF games the actually playing of the game still needs to be engaging. And this game's really wasn't. I think they can do more real time combat well, I quite enjoyed FF7R for example. Just don't think they nailed it with this one. And the story is pretty good, especially in the front half but a little bloated. Like I said in the video with a bit of trimming it could have been absolutely excellent
this gamer was more god of war then final fantasy, and it was way to easy also after the game the side missions are shit and boring and not worth the time, ff15 was more of a final fantasy whtn this and had better graphics and better game play
16 was pure trash.
Yeah this is the worst Final Fantasy game.
Good review. You convinced me not to buy it.
Glad you enjoyed the review! Thanks!
I personally had a blast playing it. Don't write it off just yet. If you want you can always wait until its really cheap.
Now one must ask: Has Final Fantasy ever been good?? Experts say NO!
Disagree. 4 with Cecil having to face himself in order to become purified is iconic. 6 exploring ideas that weren't explored at that time, with a really intricate story. 7 was good up to the point where you give the Black Materia to Sephiroth. 9 had the interesting twist with the black mages. 10 told the story in a clever way where you were learning along with the main character. 10 2 had an interesting game mechanic along with a FANTASTIC 100% ending...but anything after that was ass.
If you don’t like 10, I’m not sure JRPGs are for you. My fave is 11 but I’m not asking anyone to agree with that lol
