Thanks to a Hodinkee article in 2015, this little cracker is now hard to find. And do you know what? They were right. It is gorgeous for the money.
This watch looks so fine on that leather strap. I wonder why Seiko does not build and sell more of exactly this watch. Thank you again for the nice and informative video.
For those of you looking for this watch but can't find one, an in-production alternative is the SNKL45. Doesn't have that outer dial pattern, but it is a sunburst pattern dial, and also has other color dials available.
To many of the people wondering: This model has been discontinued (as of 2018 I believe) but can still be bought at Amazon etc for about $130
Also, the SNKL23K1 has Spanish as a second language on the day wheel, whilst the SNKL23J1 usually has Arabic as secondary language
been wearing a seiko for 30 years & only been serviced once, they're as good as ones costing silly amounts.
Snkl45 is thr closest one currently in production.
They're usually better.
If just some Celebrities starts to wear them the price will go up like Rolex
Do you put it on a leather strap?
I recently bought a Seiko 5 Actus from 1971. I've no idea of service history, so that of course might be a surprise if it stops working suddenly. However, been wearing it for some months now, and it just keep ticking with such an adequate timing for an automatic piece like this several decades old.
Seiko made, and still make ridiculously high quality watches for the cost.
Well due to you I have finally joined the Seiko club to my collection Jody, but birth year vintage pieces. I have purchased a 1973 Seiko Pogue Pepsi with the 6139B movement & a 1973 Seiko Perpetual Calendar with a blue face using the 7019 movement if you would like to review them when they arrive.
'Into the naughty corner' - that's exactly where my bracelet went! In fact I asked the dealer to remove it, paid for the watch, walked into a strap shop next door and got a nice red-brown croc strap with white stitching.
Never even tried it on the bracelet as previous Seiko 5's taught me what to expect: slow, painful arm-hair removal!
It just looks much better on a strap and shows off the lovely lines of the case. The bracelet seems to 'hide' the case shape.
P.S. mine is a 'J', bought for around 75 USD from my local AD in Kuwait. Mind you, he's putting the prices up soon.
Thanks for the review!
Hey mate! Thanks for watching . The bracelet is pretty awful. I am currently wearing the watch and it has taken half my arm hair off. Great price for a J model. Well done.
Lovely master piece ! After watching your video at the same day I went to my local watch store and I bought it for 120 dollars!! very beautiful and I love it!!
By sheer luck I found this watch for $80. I snatched it up the minute I saw it. Outstanding value, especially the sharp edges between the polished and brushed faces of the case which you usually don't see on an entry level watch. Beautiful dial too.
I'm from Scotland, and I love Seiko. I have three watches from them and haven't had any problems at all. Ideal for a spendthrift Glaswegian.
I’ve had this watch (the J model) since 2003. It’s still a killer watch. The band is actually really comfortable, loud but comfortable
Dear brother, can you please tell me it’s dial size as it looks so small I believe I have tried a women Seiko?
That's a good price. Congrats! Such a classy looking Seiko 5. It's a little small for me, but I'm still envious!
I just bought it today as my first watch. As a reward for my animation work. Loving it so far.
Congrats! Wear it in good health
Very good review video and great close up shots, thank you
It's actually quite amazing that these watches as of today are going for $219 on amazon now. Insane!
Nice watch! I am waiting on my SNK793 which in in the mail and I paid roughly the same amount in Canadian dollars. You are right about the bracelet having to be swapped. I'm browsing for leather band options.
This is always available where im from. I just bought mine yesterday, cost me 81usd. Loved it.
I bought my SNZJ53 for180 from amazon seller in singapore. Came with no box or guarantee, probably gray market, but hey these watches seldom disappoint so yeah it was a good bet. Runs around -10+ sec accuracy and ive been happy chap.
I considered this but in the end I bought an SNKL55K1. I think it looks even better.
I have the snkk71 and I love it! It is very much like this one. No one seems to like the janky metal bracelet that comes with it but I do like that bracelet, why not? It gets the job done. I had a nylon strap on it for a while but it wore out so back to the original.
Good review , keep em coming Jody!😀
I just discovered your videos and I wanna thank you for the amazing work you do! And the name of the channel "Just One More Watch" went straight to my heart! Beautiful choice of name! And I also want to congratulate you for giving the same amount of attention to 20$ watches as to much more expensive types! Pockets around the world vary greatly in depth, for some (including myself) even 100$ is towards the expensive side, especially when you plan to buy more than one watch! But I don't mind collecting what I can afford and I enjoy to wear in spite of what others say!
Hey Mate! Thanks for watching and thanks for your kind words!
Carp Andrei “ Buy what you can afford and what YOU like” is a mantra often reiterated in the watch enthusiast community. It’s sage advice!
That watch is gorgeous on that leather strap! It looks like a million bucks!!!
I got this watch for like USD 40 back in 2006. Still running well today
I own the exact same watch paid like about $130 on eBay 1 year ago and still wear it to this day. (Even with the original stainless steel bracelet 😂) however I'm now going to look for a nice leather strap bracelet.
I just bought one of these several weeks ago and love it! Although it was incredibly hard to find online. It also looks great on a perlon!
Where did you buy it man? Could you put a link please?
I bought a 7009 4040 in 1983 one of the best watches I have ever owned. These modern ones look very good.
I have a couple seiko 5s
Basically all of my watches have the ultra soft silicone clasp band.. 4$ on eBay.. Love em
I have the SNKL43 with a lovely blue sunburst dial. Popped in a sapphire and bought some straps for it. Gets a lot of wrist time. They're cool watches for the money!
beschuitfluiter whered you get a sapphire glass?
Beautiful watch!
I have a seiko 5 model. different model, same bracelet, same price.
It is beautiful and nice watch.
Here is my review after 6 years wearing.
1. After 3 years, more than 5 seconds of time differences were occurring per day. Setting time biweekly (at least) is strongly recommended.
2. Links between case and bracelet were made by 2 tiny steel pieces. Those small pieces bear the whole weight. Because of this design, gaps between case and band are getting wider.
Because of No.1 issue mentioned above, I changed my watch to radio controlled one.
My wife bought me this watch for Christmas. Stopped twice within 2 wks, and I am an active dude. This is the second Seiko 5 to do this. My first one stopped after 3 yrs. and was too expensive to get fixed. No more Seiko 5's for me. Returned the SNKL23 and purchased a Seiko SNE393 Solar. Live and learn.
Great review. On the right strap this one is fantastic.
Upon starting the video I was absolutely delighted to hear your Scottish accent lol
Looking for one of these as well.
I'm hoping some Black Friday sales will kick one of these up...
Cheapest I found on eBay was $99. Most were over $150
Love both watches and knives, so it’s like a fun crossover episode with the Leatherman!
i use my J model as a beater for work great little watch
Can never find any of these watches for the price in the video.
The snkl23 has been discontinued, I believe.
Not sure how or where he found it at that price but mine was 140 Aus$ bought few months back with a proper packaging.
I found it here in Japan for about 100 bucks
Try ebay but it’s double the price :(
I just bought 2 of these for $89 each giving one to a mate for his wedding. Had been looking for months and couldn’t believe my luck to find them at that price
Great video - keep up the good work.
I got the SNKL83 for around $75, that looks very similar but has a red seconds hand (which I just love). I originally got it with plans to use the case in a Seiko mod with another watch but once I had it in my hands I just loved the look and feel of it on my wrist. It is just such a elegant and simple watch with it's minimalist look. Thanks for the review and I'm enjoying your reviews a great deal.
Great watch, not too keen on metal straps so I intend on buying a couple of leather and NATO straps to mix and match with it, just waiting for it to get back in stock.
Ordere a SNKM87K1 today should come tomorrow looking forward to trying it on will order a nice new strap for it not decided which one yet.
Hope all is well!! Thanks for the review!! Do you have any links? Thanks in advance.
Those lugs are so long, but it should be perfect for nato straps because it won't sit as high.
My grandfather gave me a seiko 5 1988, 7009 17 jewels.. beautiful watch!
Just bought in for $100 , and it's trully wonderful. There's a tiny spec of dust on the dial tho... I guess that can be cleaned out later at a service?... But at this price, it's well worth it. Hell, at this level of pupularity, it might even be an investment watch lol
Wow! It's so beautiful!
Just picked up the J model in mint condition and got both a black leather strap and the 18mm stainless steel Milanese strap. This Seiko now looks like a $2,000 watch...just absolutely goergous, I love it!
Which strap did u like best the leather or the milanese??
I am 27 and I am looking for my very first "good" watch (I had a mvmt and a casio before). A friend of mine is selling his top-condition SNKL23 for 90 EUR. I also have the chance to buy the SNKL43 (blue dial) for 50 EUR. What would you recommend me to buy? I think that the black one looks more elegant but the blue can be more versatile due to the more possibilities of straps to be attached to it. Any suggestions for a beginner?
beautiful indeed! i want one now.
Beautiful watch, I have a solar Seiko love it wear it daily great watches.
I found the bracelet easy to work with. Take out 3 links without even breaking a sweat
Could you do a vid on the Seiko Sea Urchin or the Fifty-Five Fathoms?
Link for the watch please? I love your vids. Keep it up.
bought it a year ago...got 3 leather straps for it. freaking love it ! Still looks freaking sexy and grabs attention.
Thanks for rescuing my Seiko 6N0340_J from the Concert Hall at the Opera House tonight...You are a legend!
Ha! You looked me up! No problem at all, delighted to help, especially when the help concerns a watch. All the best, Jody
bought one yesterday, came with a manual and warranty card but the Sold By and Purchased By fields in the Certificate of Guarantee is left blank. Does this mean it is not covered by the warranty?
Hi Jody! I know it's been a while since you posted this video, but do you think the SNKL23 is (still) worth its actual price? I found one at 165$ for the japanese version, which seems for a bit too much for me as it looks like it has became iconic only for its beautiful dial, knowing that it's only mineral glass and not one the best movements. Nowadays you could easily buy much better watches for that price or even for less than that, so what do you think about it?
Question - with no hand winding, how long do you need to shake it to get it going? How long will a shake “power it” if I don’t plan on wearing it, but want to keep it running?
Thanks 🙏🏻
Did you say that the leather strap was actually 20 mm and you manage to put it on the watch which its lug was 18 mm?
I just want to reconfirm because I am plannimg to buy one and replace the metal bracelet with a leather strap. Thamks
Even though the measure of the watch is 18mm you can use a 20mm bracelet as long as it is made of leather, because it is more flexible. If it is metal it does not work
Got mine coming in a few days
Gonna be my first non "fashion watch"
i need to know something. when was SNKL series manufactured? what was the year..(approx)
does the pinstripe in the dial is noticeable everytime? or on other people? or there is a specific lighting or shade to see it?
Jody, can i ask? If you wear that seiko 5 on a daily basis will you put it on the original bracelet or leather strap?
You've come a long way.
great t shirt! I have the repair manual.
Thanks for the review 👍 I finally managed to find one that ships to the UK. Can anyone suggest a good aftermarket oyster bracelet that will work for this watch? Thank you 😊
Looking to buy this watch. Waiting for your next video on this.
A great watch for everyday use. Nice quality nice price .
Very nice piece
Hey! it looks realy nice on that strap! Can you tell me where I can buy that leather strap from ? :)
it is out of stock right now, which one has the similar design, case size with snkl23?
Dear, where can I get this watch under $75. I tried but no website is selling it to India. Most of site shows it out of order. Please help
Good.
No muzak and a knowledgeable review without getting nerdy.
Hey, those are amazing. Do you prefer those over the Snxs79?
Indeed it’s a beautiful watch
As a daily wear all terrain watch I would put a NATO strap on it.for the price you can't go wrong with Seiko.
“This one will be going into the naughty corner” 😏 didn’t know seiko watches could work the corner
Which version do you recommend this one or the seiko snk393k?
Looks beautiful, and it also looks really small when you are holding it or you have really big hands.aybr I'm getting old and I can't see as well. :)
Looks great on that strap! I love these seikos but I think my 7 3/4" wrist would make it look comically small :(
Yes mate, maybe 38mm a wee bit small for you. Thanks for watching!
love that shirt them books were the old youtube for mechanics lol
A good looking watch but the Seiko SNKL41 / 45 are still my favorite by far.
Second hand is Actually Smoother than my Seiko Solar Blue Dial,Great Buy for a 21 Jewel movement!!the Bracelet is a Chinese ,Like mine,& Looses it's Brilliance pretty Quick.
I have the Sekio SNK795. It is the little sibling to the SARB033. Similar to this but I believe nicer.
I just got this watch today and it has the 7s26c movement and no country of origin indicated at the back of watch. Not sure if its the new model or a fake
I sense something wrong hope you're okay. Just sounded flat today which is ok but thought maybe something wrong. Anyway always a pleasure watching your channel
Mate, I'm fine, the video is over 2 years old! I came out of my shell over that period. Thanks for the concern though. Jody
I'm new to watches. Initially I wanted a good looking simple watch for $100 and less but I watched these videos and been advised to get the Seiko 5, which looks quite sober and not as cool but I know it's got heritage.
In India this cost about $130
which watch did you end up buying
Hola!!!! the same watches are made in Brasil and distributed to all the Americas. Cheers from Partagonia, Argentina.
Where can i get that leather strap? That's beautiful
I'm still debating getting my first Seiko in Forever, an SNKL43 J1, for around $70 from Jomashop. Or gonna wait a bit to get my income tax, and Possibly invest in a Grand Seiko, we'll see 🤷🏻♂️ Can't wear nice watches much, having the career that I do, utility pole inspection and treatment. My job has killed a G-Shock and 2 other watches already, fairly quickly after I started wearing them to work, so I'd only be wearing a Good watch at night, at whatever hotel I'm staying at for work, and on the weekends when I'm home, but that's more often than not just a 1 day weekend on a Sunday 🙄 So, probably just gonna go with the SNKL43, that Gorgeous blue dial on that watch is Something 😍😍 Wish Seiko put better movements in their 5 lineup, but the 7s26 isn't Bad once you get it regulated a bit. It'd probably keep slightly better time than my 1959 Bulova 23 with the original 10bpac movement in it, so why not? Some of Seiko's 5 series watches are Beautiful
Beautiful watch.
Hello, I would like to buy a Seiko 5 SNXS77K1 automatic watch. Does an automatic watch have to run continuously? What is the lifespan of the Seiko 5 SNXS73K1? That would be my first automatic watch.
It's December 2020.. and its $73 coming from Singapore.. and $63 sale.
Got one for 85 bucks really cool. I need a strap and im set
Bought mine last month for 68 US bucks in Singapore (via ebay)
Please tell me honestly. If I buy an automatic movement, that less that less than 100$, how long will it last me before I have to get a service or a new one because the service costs more than the service?
Are the stores you have linked trusted sellers?
what a beautiful watch
What do you think of the seiko sporturo SJ32-0AHD. It would be nice to have someone else’s opinion if anyone has one.
Pls share the link from which u hv ordered
