- In this video we're checking out Lene Lovich. This one's been on our list for some time now, and we figure it's about time we get to know Lene. This should be quite interesting. Enjoy!

This was a huge hit on Los Angeles radio 📻 when I was a kid. It sounded so fresh. Legendary DJ Rodney Bingenheimer " The Mayor Of The Sunset Strip " was the first to play it. Masterpiece !
When I was young, I bought this album because I loved the cover of her first album. I never regretted spending my allowance on Lene.
This is such a great song and she was quite unique. This got into the charts over here.
Thanks for playing this. I thought you would like it. Another slightly quirky song that I like is Noosha Fox singing S S Single Bed , also Only You Can.
Lene Lovich, Kate Bush, Nina Hagen and Bjork are queens of the bizarre SOOO creative and brave. Truly art.
She was on Stiff Records, which was the coolest record label in the UK, spawning a number of important and influential artists from varied backgrounds. The Stiff Tour was legendary.
I remember this being in the chart in the UK when I was nine years old. I loved it. She did a collab with Nina hagen at the end of the eighties (I think) called Don't Kill Animals.
I was in the UK and 9 too! ❤❤ Love it 🎉
Late 70's not 80's. They also had a movie
Her touring band included a young British keyboardist named Thomas Dolby. He did a thing or two on his own. ☺
Oh yes. We love his big hits. We've only started returning to his music.
This song is about an alien visitation. New wave at it's height. We danced our ass off under the influence of ....love in the club.
I loved this reaction to this.
She was a great artist, another along similar lines only earlier was, Noosha Fox known simply as 'Fox' and the track 'S-S-S-Single Bed', which would be a great one for you to react to.
This was the very first album I ever bought, at the age of 12. I'm now 56 and still absolutely love her stuff and continue to listen to her on the regular. Appreciated your reaction. Good greetings from Toronto, Canada.
LeneL&NinaHagen are both wonderful performers... You 2 are delving into a lot of diverse genres&eras, and I luv it!
They even sung a song together in the late 80's called 'Don't Kill The Animals' 😊
@@mightyV444 It was a great idea but I didn't think that particular one was so great.
They did a film together about 78/79ish called "Cha Cha". It should be on UA-cam.
This is a song that seemed to be around for two or three years on the radio. All the kids are school talked about it. Excellent choice of song.
"Say When" was her other big hit from the same lp.
I’ve not heard it for 40 years and it still ROCKS! ❤❤
Absolutely one of my favourite things ever.
The whole album this comes from is pretty amazing, and she does an incredible cover of, The Night.
It is. Oddly enough Nina Hagen did sort of a cover of this. "Wir Leben Immer... Noch" which is the same tune but I'm sure it's different lyrics but I'm not 100% as my German isn't great.
@@SPKdesign1 she did that quite a bit as I remember, she also covers the music from The Tubes, White Punks On Dope and has her own German lyrics
@@Sandy-dd4le Her first two lps as The Nina Hagen Band are so amazing. The band she used for those lps went on to be Spliff who had some great stuff oot as well.
@@Sandy-dd4le Have you heard her version of the Rammstein track "Seemann"?
@@SPKdesign1 - Yes, Spliff were great! Very cool that you know their stuff, too! 😀👍
You might like her cover of "I Think We're Alone Now'. Personally, my favourite Lene Lovich track is 'home'.
I highly recommend the Hanier Family to react to other amazing songs from Lene (Laynah) Lovich from her 1979 Flex album which is a little more dark, goth, quirky and weird and so excellent- Bird Song, Angels, Monkey Talk, Wonderful One, Egghead, What will I do Without You?
This is not the clip that was played on TV when it was in the charts in 1979. I was 10 but remember it very well.
I've heard of her being called a "Latvian screw-ball", but it's different and catchy
Wow.....been a long time since i heard this........brought back a few memories...... Still sounds relevant today. Looking back at it now ....she was like a clone of Souxsie and Banshees!
Lene Lovich was a professional screamer for horror films, etc, for a while - not every actress can do them, so she'd be called in for overdubbing. If you want an example, listen to Cuckoo Clock, by Rachel Sweet - there's a fine example of Lene's work in that!
I fancied Lene like mad when I first saw her on TV, and many years later ended up having a long relationship with a woman with a very similar facial structure. Lucky old me. eh?
Lene Lovich was an early signing for Stiff Records. Her follow up song was: "I Say When". A forgotten wonder.
I was 9 or 10 when this came out I think and I loved it❤ I was a childhood fan of ABBA and this was before my love of great pop and classic prog rock. It was so weird. Still love it at 53! Thanks as always for the eclectic choice ❤❤❤
Wonderful and thanks for the name check.
I've always adored Lene Lovich and her hits album is on regular rotation in my car. She was a huge influence on a later acts. You can hear her in Gwen Stefani amongst others, not sure it was direct but I think it's clear.
Nina Hagen and Lene were great friends and Nina did a cover of this on, I think, Unbehagen.
As for Devo - they were on Stiff with Lene and the Stiffies all did a cover of 'Be Stiff', of which Lene's is a stand out - it's wonderful.
Please check out 'Bird Song' - it's pretty much my favourite and is a bit darker.
Could you guys do the music video for Michael Nesmith's RIO?
The video is six minutes in length.
It's on the Michael Nesmith's Videoranch channel.
I would much rather the official video and not some audio clip.
Back in 1977 Countdown played the music video for ''Rio'' and we Countdown kids went nuts for it.
The clip was quite sophisticated at the time, and we didn't mind that he was an ex-Monkee.
RIO was the first song I requested on the radio through seeing it on Countdown.
The song got to # 4 on the Australian charts, and it all had to do with us kids repeatedly requesting the song.
I don't think the song had the same success anywhere else, and Nesmith was appreciative of our efforts.
I got to say guys, music videos were pretty important component for us Countdown kids.
A lot of times it was the only way we could find out about a song. See the video on Countdown.
Radio weren't always willing to play cutting edge artists unless we pushed for it.
I would like it if you guys viewed Michael Nesmith's ''Rio'' (6 minute long - Micahel Nesmith's Videorach).
Oh man what a lovely song ❤❤❤
"Wenn Ich Ein Junge Wär (If I Were A Boy)" is a great Nina track but it's in German as is her cover of "My Way".
one of my favourite concerts when I was at University in the late 70s/80s and this is a great song
So glad you enjoyed this one.
Her other biggie was New Toy.
Thomas Dolby had some level of involvement in her music, but I no longer recall the connection. I did see him in one of her music videos, in a car if I recall correctly.
Thomas has done great songs, and there’s a fantastic live version of Hyperactive on The Old Grey Whistle Test that I think you’d love.
Thomas Dolby is also in the 'New Toy' video clip. Which I'd seen for the first time only two, three months ago, and I was surprised to see him pop up. That song does sound fairly similar to some of his own though and is great, too!
I believe Thomas Dolby wrote New Toy.
If you do a follow up, Lena's second (lesser) hit single, New Toy, is the way to go. It isn't quite as quirky, but her vocals are as distinctive and I think it's every bit as good as Lucky Number.
She also did a cover of I Think We're Alone Now - in Japanese.
Tom Dolby plays keys on that one.
Love Lene!!!!! Try out "New Toy", a great Lena song, written by Thomas Dolby!
Love this 🦹♀️
Lene has always been one of my favorites. She doesn't have many releases, but IMO, Shadows and Dust, which is her latest release from 2005 is by far her best album. I saw her in New Haven CT at a club called Toad's Place back in the early 80's. She had such energy and played the sax. Check out Craze from Shadows and Dust if you want to hear more of her.
Lene and Nina have worked together. They did a movie called "Cha Cha" (Dutch/German/English) and did a song for PETA called "Don't Kill the Animals".
We have a video for 'Don't Kill The Animals'. It was interesting.
@@hanierfamilyYeah, I found it after I wrote that. Thanks.
Lene and Nina Hagen made a full length art film together!!
Check out her other big hit Say When! ..also an obscure track called Monkey Talk 👍
In 1979 the Nina Hagen Band did a great German cover version of "Lucky Number" (titled "Wie leben immer… noch") on their album Unbehagen. Actually, I knew the latter before having listened to the original by Lene Lovich, which is why I am perhaps more attached to the cover by the Nina Hagen Band, nevertheless the two versions each have their unique charm and specificity.
Recorded at Eden where I used to work. One of my favourite records of the era.
OMG, you mentioned Nina Hagen! She's another great artist from back in my youth.
I remember watching her and thinking how awesome she was....I was 13 yrs old.
Its marvelousssssssssssss
Have not heard this for yonks , Lenai was a proper one off , this was right in the middle of Punk if my memory serves me right ! great tune !
1979- More Post Punk. 🤩
I am not sure if this is true but I remember hearing she supplied the screams for horror movies
100% true!
Brilliant song , another to try is , say when , you will love that too . Was another big hit in the uk .
This is probably her best-known song; I also liked "The Night" from her album 'Flex'. Good choice.
Good stuff out of the Stiff records stable.Plenty of quirky artists on that label.
There is no such thing as pop punk.
The blink 182s
Greendays of the world are power Pop. BUT AWESOME I HAVEN'T HEARD THIS SINCE I WAS A SNOTTY NOSED LITTLE BRAT I'M NOW A BOOGER NOSED GERIATRIC AND HAPPY TO HEAR THIS AGAIN
Great to hear this again , Lena was unique , not a lot of hits but this was memorable yes
👍🏴
Nothing wrong with a bit of kookiness. This, and The Flying Lizards were great examples!
You really should listen to FOX very eccentric UK band. Try ONLY YOU CAN or IMAGINE ME IMAGINE YOU. Lead singer Noosha Fox beautiful and amazing.
If you're thinking about giving Nina Hagen a try, may I suggest Universal Radio. It may not be her best, but it did get some radio airplay. (At least on KROQ)
All time fav. Reminds me a little of early Split Enz.
GREAT SONG REMEMBER IT WELL, ANOTHER QUIRKY ONE WAS. A REMAKE OF MONEY BY THE BEATLES BY THE FLYING LIZARDS SURE IT WAS THEM CHEERS😊
Yes. We remember that one. Muchmusic insisted on playing the video for that on regular rotation when the channel first started.
another great track
Got to # 2 in Australia. Why not watch the original video?
On Stiff Records !
@@davidellis5141 It was released on Stiff records. I had the 45 along with Ian Dury's 'Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick' (another song that got to # 2 in Australia). She and Ian Dury had a few more hits in Australia for a slim moment.
@liveitup67 Loved Ian .. Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll & Wake Up & Make Love To Me were hits in Southern California. Loved the adverts in NME or Melody Maker touting .. If It Ain't Stiff .. It Ain't Worth A .. .. 😆 🤣
@@davidellis5141 Ha, ha. I remember the adverts in those magazines. I recall distinctly telling my sister at age 12 that I could no longer page through NME and Melody Maker because I found the writers to be parochial and anti-Antipodean.
@@liveitup67They were definitely the " enemy " of Kiwi & Australian acts. Julie Burchhill ended up writing for The Dail Mail .. A conservative rag.
has anyone suggested any Toyah songs
We don't think she's on our list.
@@hanierfamily Ok , check this tune out Toyah "I want to be free"
You look like a couple of airline pilots there! :0)
Hugs from Brazil 🎉
❤❤❤❤
Quirky ok, but thats enough
Another great one from Lena is "I Say When": ua-cam.com/video/uDZGPWkDl28/v-deo.html
Randy Meisner of The Eagles has gone now.
And we'd love to do a tribute, but we have no plans that involve their material. If Meisner had other projects, we'd be happy to check them out and pay him a proper tribute. Because intellectual property rights are more important than remembering one of the great bands of the 20th century.
@@hanierfamily Strangers. Featured Randy Meisner and Ann Wilson.
