Gerard's screaming WAKE UP at the end always gets me. This album came out when I was struggling with multiple sleep disorders that caused horrific nightmares that would continue after i woke up and the recounting of the night terrors in this hit very close to home. Its such an amazing song. You should listen to some Conventional Weapons. Boy Division, Light Behind Your Eyes, and Ambulance are all great. And their cover of Desolation Row.
Same, this song felt like someone finally got it, no one talked about it but here is this beautiful piece of work helping release all that crazy emotions that come with nightmares
Oh yeah conventional weapons was amazing. Especially when you think how they're all b-sides. Light Behind Your Eyes is one of my all time favorite songs.
This always gives me chills. The "wake up" screamed over and over at the end...every time. Juxtaposing the lyrics from the verses with that ending, in the context of the narrative? Forget about it. This song crushes in ALL WAYS.
(Not so) Fun Fact: According to their biography written by Tom Bryant, the song Sleep and specifically the talking in the beginning and end of the song is Gerard describing the night terrors that he got when they were staying in the Paramour Mansion during the recording of TBP (I’m unsure if that’s his voice in the recording or not though, it might be). He also had nightmares of his loved ones and Joan of Arc (his favorite historical figure) dying in flames. Just thought I’d give you something sad to think about 👍🏻
I'm glad you liked it . If you didn't know already during the black parade album the whole band lived in the paramour Mansion. Which is a really haunted mansion, and they wrote the whole black parade album there too.
This is my favorite of theirs. It’s perfect. The agony of the “wake up” at the end kills me every time. Thanks for doing this one! Have you done “Destroya” yet? I recommend that and “Our Lady of Sorrows.” One from the end of their original run and one from the beginning.
early sunsets over monroeville is from bullets, their first album and Gerard was having a terrible toothache during the recording of the song and you can hear he's pain, too real

They wrote this (and the whole album) at the very haunted Paramour Mansion (no relation to the band) and the voices of the tape recorder in the beginning and the bridge were actually Gerard keeping a tape recorder at his bed to record his nightmares he was having at the mansion and what is on the song was what he described in one of his nightmares. He screams sleep because he was having bouts of insomnia at the mansion and then begins screaming wake up for two reasons, first because on the album the protagonist, a man dying tragically in his 30s of cancer has died and gone to hell and hes trying to convince himself its a nightmare from the chemo and just wants to wake up. The second is because Gerard is trying to tell himself to wake up from his nightmare that he described on the tape audio in the song. And a fun fact is that this song was the first recorded of the whole album and it all began with the opening piano riff after Gerard had a sleepless night and the rest all just grew from there. And it wasnt just Gerard that had paranormal experiences while staying here; his brother Mikey who plays bass for MCR became so depressed and borderline suicidal that he actually left the mansion halfway through recording the album to seek treatment. Even Papa Roach stayed at the Paramour and recorded an album there and they also had similar experiences.
Sorry to mention another reaction channel here but Brad in BradTasteInMusic dissected this song for me and since then...everytime I hear this song it's just that it swallows me whole, all of my being just get swallowed up by Gerard's darkness, how he was within, it's like a dark, empty, void, with such sadness, anger, grief, the demons, all of those are deafening my ears, wake uuuppp...and tears my heart apart. Man! Gerard! Dude! This guy...man...thanks for being our voice, my voice, thank you for screaming out for us, for screaming all the pain we had out. This might sound exaggerated or whiney but I hope he knows how thankful we are. Thank you.
I have had many night terrors and when this song came out...oof it hits home but felt like a release hearing it in music (if that makes any sense). Definitely one of my top favorites, the layering, and mixing of this song is just absolutely beautiful!

Seriously hands down the best concert i ever went to was My Chemical Romance on their Black Parade tour. They performed the entire Black Parade album in sequence AND THEN came back and performed multiple songs from their previous albums. So amazing.
Stoked you were able to get to this one. Thought you’d dig it. The unsung hero of this song is the mixer - especially the ending. There’s so much going on sonically that to be able to give each element a clear voice without muddying the track is so so impressive with the wall of sound that blasts you. You touched on the placement of the vocals further back and you’re spot on with that. Cheers!

Sleep and House of Wolves are my two favorite songs from TBP but I love the entire album. I’ve got all of their albums and I was lucky enough to see them 6 times between 2006 and 2011. They are amazing
Sleep never fails to give me chills! You should definitely check out Thank You For The Venom or The Light Behind Your Eyes. Two top notch tracks by MCR!
My niece Tyranny loves this song because of when the song goes three cheers for tyranny. She normally only sees or hears her name in the way of we must fight to end tyranny way.

Same with everyone I love the last part when Gerard starts screaming "Wake Up". It feels like the whole song burst to you in the end and hitting you again and again, that part gave me chills.
Finally I have found someone who obviously knows their music and has the same reaction to MCR and Sleep more specifically like I do. Every part of your reaction was like holding up a mirror to myself and the way I react listening to this song.
