It’s so undemocratic to put these things out, especially given they make us pay for them through council tax. Councils have lost their minds they have gone from serving local residents to authoritarian money draining organisations with literal thickos in charge. They think they own all land, they think they own the roads, they think we are there to serve them and do what they say. It should be the other way around and they should be begging us to make the decisions about our local areas.

We had those LTN traffic blockers here in Warrington, up until last year. The exhaust fume levels increased, because all the traffic including HGV's were stuck in massive jams, where there hadn't been jams previously. Then the council realised that the school buses couldn't get through to the schools, and the Fire Brigade were rather upset because their engines wouldn't fit through all the cars parked down the streets because their owners couldn't get to their homes and driveways! A little bird told me that the planters that were strewn merrily about here were watered with weed-killer in the early hours, and someone 'borrowed' a fork-lift truck, and moved some of them over a bit, to make room. When all the flowers in the planters kept dying, and they became receptacles for beer cans and other rubbish- - - - the council finally saw sense and removed them all. They looked exactly like the ones you have, even to the green signs, so perhaps that is where they were sold to!

The thing about LTN’s that are completely baffling is, they are sold to people on how they reduce traffic on residential streets, meaning children can play safely without the fear of being mowed down. Well that may be the case if you have a house on street “X”, but if you live on street “Y”, you now have 100 times more traffic driving on your street, making it vastly more dangerous. So 1 street has lower emissions, quieter traffic and are safer for children. Yet other streets now have increased emissions, increased noise and are practically a death trap for children.

And I thought it would be good to promote safety and independence for the age 7 - 11 kids growing their confidence going in and out of school by themselves. Then that thing happened and I woke up again. That's how they get us; we'll give you this, it'll be safer for the children. And before you know it you own nothing and are happy 👀

Child road safety means understanding that you are NOT the one with "all the rights", and accepting that you just have to fit in with the needs of others. Whilst "School zones" might be justifiable (at a stretch) for Primary Schools, by the time they are in Secondary education they should be expected to know the pedestrians' Road Rules, and act accordingly.
In Australia we have 40km/h "School Zones" in our Secondary Schools - and more than a few of the older pupils drive, so this policy simply cultivates the "I've got Rights, Mate!" mindset that Australia is justifiably notorious for (and of course leads to a higher accident rate amongst new drivers). We are deluged by the "Speed Kills" garbage, yet our fastest roads are (per driver mile) also our safest. Speed does NOT kill; entitled / impatient attitude (combined with very poor training standards) kill, and kill reliably.

no school kid gets stabbed to death being dropped off and picked up by car from school....you want to keep kids safe? embrace the car, you know the thing that allowed the uk's economy to really grow rapidly as people were able to go from one place to another quickly and cheaply. I had turned off a busy road, under instruction from TomTom, there were signs that looked like they've had been produced by children, that I didn't have time to read.
I travelled along the road, that was only the width of a single car (cars parts on both sides of the road) to get to the other end which opened out onto a crescent which was where the house was,.Only to find there was a camera next to a sign which said if I passed that point I would be fined.
It was impossible to turn around.
I received an £80+ fine from Wandsworth council 😩.

It is how people in cities and towns get about because public transport doesn't go where they need to get to. Life is tough enough without making it unnecessarily difficult. No-one benefits from this madness.
As the powers that be are so anti-car, it would be honest if they just came out and banned all motor cars, vans, trucks and lorries - they are all equally affected by this.
The corollary is that no goods would be able to move from a to b, the economy would crash overnight instead of this painful, slow decline. But at least pedestrians would be happy?
I'm guessing you would be happy with that outcome...?
City and road design has been around moving goods and people, because that is what is needed. There may be better ways to do it, but not doing it does no-one any good.

    • @wb9957

@@lottieallen9458 if people don't use public transport, there's not enough funding for there to be enough routes for it to be practical. If you just take a car every time, you are voting against public resources and voting for privatisation of transport. Even when cars don't make sense to be used, like in a city centre, you probably use a car.
If you live far away from a city centre there are park and ride options in most major cities and if there aren't, you should be campaigning for them before it becomes impossible for the ever increasing amount of drivers to park in the same space that has existed since the 1980's.

    • @lottieallen9458
      @lottieallen9458 4 місяці тому

@wb9957 I agree there is not enough funding for public transport to go everywhere where people need to go - that requires private transport, which clearly has limits (not sure what the 1980s have to do with it).
I live in London, and no I don't drive into the city centre - there is nowhere to park especially since workplace parking was taxed out of existence, the traffic calming measures are a joke, the street furniture clutter means that attention that should be focused on driving is taken away trying to work out what the signs say and mean to you as a driver, speed cameras and surveillance cameras to catch out drivers who have misunderstood the changed rules and signage, etc. We also have to contend with congestion charging, ULEZ and LEZ zones (cameras for them too), all of which are additional costs on non-public transport (taxis, delivery drivers, engineers, and other specific service providers), which we the recipients of services end up paying for as well because the costs are passed on.
I disagree that driving a car is a vote against public resources or for privatisation of transport, it is just practical solution to a transportation problem, and do not see what options there are - not have those services? - if public transport does not serve the destination or the needs of the people travelling - e.g. when the mayor closed tube stations near Whitehall on Rememberance Sunday, when the veterans and public attend the parade to and from the Cenotaph - they are mostly elderly and infirm - how are they supposed to make the journey simply and according to their need because they couldnt get close?
There are always needs to be exceptions to the rule. Ask those who would like to enjoy the nightlife in London but cannot afford the train and taxi fares to and from their destinations, or have to leave before theatre performances finish otherwise they won't get home because of public transport limitations (our 'wonderful' mayor has changed bus routes that have made in town journeys more complicated, for no good reason (not that he deigned to explain the reassoning) or should they forgo the pleasure? Staying overnight in an hotel is not always an option.
If streets are for the people, that has to include motorists of whatever vehicle too.
I'm not saying it is easy, but a balance has to be struck, otherwise towns and cities will become no-go areas for the elderly, infirm, and those with specialist needs because they can't be served by public transport and private transport is not allowed. That is not how I want to live, nor do I think that is a solution.

    • @wb9957

@@lottieallen9458 this hypothetical person can somehow afford a car, insurance, VED, petrol and maintenance but can't afford to use public transport or a bike? Sounds like they are making a bad decision by having a car and should be using public transport or a bike to save money! I cycle to work daily and go to town with friends on the bus.
Have you heard of the saying "vote with your money"? Well by funding the auto industry and not funding public transport you are voting against resources that the public can use.
I am not saying nobody should use cars. People who need to use cars should. Does a person going to work 5 miles away every day need to use a car? No, a bike, ebike or bus would suffice and would cost less and be more efficient. Hell, I know people that drive a mile into the city centre and complain about their journey taking 45 minutes because of the traffic, meanwhile I cycle from 6 miles away and it takes me less than 30 minutes.
Cars are not a necessity and should not be treated as such. 40% of households in Sheffield do not have access to a car, should they just be forgotten about? Funds need to go towards public transport and active travel. Both public transport and cycling are more efficient in terms of storage and energy expenditure per mile, reducing waste.
How many cars have only 1 occupant? Last study I saw stated that 80% of cars are carrying 1 person, why do you need a vehicle that can seat 5 in order to go to work for 90% of trips?
Streets are for people and motorists have been prioritised for a huge chunk of recent history, it's time the people that don't have the privilege of owning a car get prioritised for a change.

But the main thing about them is that they are removable if you have the simple metal pin that will slot into the bollard allowing you to lift it out of its base socket. This would allow emergency vehicles to get through if they have the key. It would be easy to check if they are Glasden bollards by having a close look at it.

I live in one of the most densely populated cities in England [and in Europe]
To try and control the rat running through the tiny little back streets they made these roads alternately one way, [so traffic doesn’t meet head on in a narrow road which is good],
Then to try and stop the rat running they blocked off some of the roads so that you need to Zig Zag or do ‘U’ shaped journeys through the town.
This just made is difficult for the residents who live there because it just moves the traffic from one area to another, or sometimes doubles the amount local streets being affected.
But the one thing that did help was when they made all of the tiny back streets 20MPH but kept the mains roads running past at 30MPH.
This is OK because these back street are so tiny you don’t feel the need to go quicker than 20MPH, and with a 30 MPH road going past 1 street away there isn’t any point and doing the rat runs because the mains roads are quicker.
You still get taxi drivers rat running and exceeding the 20MPH at rush hr, and occasionally the town gets grid locked so then everyone ends up driving anywhere they can to get through the jams.
The main problems are caused by people owning cars that they never use, which makes it horrendous to go down the streets that are ll packed with parked cars that hardly ever move.

Just think a council’s primary purpose and the only reason we have them is to serve the people. It is not to order, control, fine the people.
We vote for councillors, but it is the directors and senior management that we don’t vote for the controls and makes the changes within the councils.
Directors that earn more than the prime minister of a country, how are they more important or able to do this? No directors or senior management within any council should earn more than an pm. This should include the bonuses and pension.
The people should have a right to vote for the directors of a council aswell as councillors.
Directors and senior management should be held accountable and sacked when they don’t provide the basic services a council was set up to provide. Any changes to an environment like ltn should be put to a vote of the people within that council area.
No council should be able to make any changes if the services they provide are not up to standard including policing within areas.
Remember a council primary purpose is to serve you the people. Now start holding them accountable for everything and demand that people within the council from directors, senior managers and staff are all sacked when money is wasted or services are not provided, or changes are made without the people’s consent.

The low traffic neighbourhoods thing reminds me of a scheme they tried in Mexico to reduce air pollution. They banned you from using your car on 1 day each Monday to Friday. So everyone went out and bought a second car, which was usually older, less efficient and more polluting. Air quality rapidly became much worse. the solution to this new problem was to extend the scheme to Saturdays as well. We used to have a car-less days scheme in New Zealand in the 70's (during the oil crisis). Each car had a sticker on the windscreen to show which day you couldn't drive it. My parents had 2 cars already, and they had different days they couldn't be driven, so that system really worked well.

Anyone else suddenly got manger road works with closures or temporary lights? Straight after the Easter school holidays when it would of been an ideal time for such works !!!

We don't need low traffic. We need as much traffic as possible, because without traffic there are no people, there is no life, there is no business, but only sadness...

The theory was to reduce traffic by stopping all the people using the cutout throughs to bypass congestion on the main roads, but all its done is create more traffic because everyone gets lost and has to drive around aimlessly

Hi Geoff, looks like an excellent way to increase urban pollution with all those extra miles travelled going round in circles.
How about writing a dystopian themed book called "Escaping The Zones", or maybe even, "Three Point Turn Heaven"?

Remember when using back roads was called using a 'Rat run'.
It was usually locals using local knowledge to get around bottlenecks.
Now those people will be stuck along with everyone else on roads that will massively overcapacity.
If you vote for Labour in the coming election this is what you'll receive as your reward, roads that are now impossible to navigate.

I feel your pain Geoff !
I know the area well as I grew up there.
I did more or less the exact same route as you did the other day, frustrating doesn’t cover it.
The people living by the planters must get really pissed off with everyone doing three point turns outside their house.
You fuelled up at Grove service station !!
