People in Poland do eat fast-food, we just don't eat then primarily. When you're going home from a party, you can go for McDonalds or something, or when you're meeting your friends or maybe sometimes you just want to have something fast or maybe you just have this particular craving. We also have fast foods that might not be obvious to people not from Europe, like kebabs, zapiekanka, etc, but in general fast food is something you eat sometimes, not all the time.

Polska nie jest idealnym krajem do życia, zarabiamy zbyt mało, jednak przyroda jest cudowna, jedzenie smaczne, jest bezpieczniej niz w innych państwach

In Poland, winters are not as cold, 20 years ago there were freezing winters, now there are mild winters, and sometimes there is even no snow at least in the center of Poland. Summer in Poland is very warm, with little rain.

In Poland you will find typical fast food chains: McDonald's, Burger King, KFC/Pizza Hut, but the most popular are kebabs and pizza (my wife and I are starting to joke that traditional Polish cuisine is kebab and pizza - even in tiny towns where you won't find one restaurant, 99% will be a kebab and/or pizzeria). Slow food is also becoming more and more fashionable - mainly burgers (often very good quality), pastrami, and generally Tex-Mex.
But in fact - you should finally come to Poland and see for yourself! 🙂

That's actually true. I live in Warsaw and I'm impressed how good the burgers are. They are made out of really quality ingredients, so if you have a time it's not necessary to eat in McDonald's or Burger King, beacuse the prices are comparable to those places.

The fish he mentioned is written as śledź and it's a hering. It's probably served in different way than on US so he didn't recognise it's a hering ;).

The winters are not that savage anymore, you can have short periods of extreme cold like -20C but it's just for few days, usually it's close to 0 degrees in winter nowadays.

Castles: Malbork, Szlak Orlich Gniazd (about dozen of old castles in various degrees of disrepair between Kraków and Częstochowa), Kotlina Kłodzka has a lot of them but you can see them from the outside mainly, Wawel in Kraków. There are also others, i don't remember now.

Sure, a lot of people would rather cook at home as it comes out much cheaper than dining out all the time but we do eat a lot of fast food as well. McDonalds is still super popular, we have burger kings and subways. We also like street food like for example zapiekanki (haven't seen those in other countries. It's like a half of a baguette usually with fried mushrooms, ham or pepperoni, melted cheese and sauces). We also like pizza and cheap chinese takeout :D But if you would like to taste really good Polish food bigos and pierogi are the way to go :)

Winters are nearly gone on our latitude (Poland for sure). In the 80s and most of the 90s we had really nice winters - lots of snow throughout most of the winter period and the temperatures fell below -20 C. I remember my parents used to smear our faces with some sort of creme or something similar to avoid being frostbitten :). Nowadays we rarely go below -10 (Silesia - where I live). I feel sorry for kids, too many cars on the roads + way less snow = no fun :)

Śledzie are Pickled Atlantic herrings. Really good
There's as many fast food places in Poland as in UK. Usually fastfoods should be 'cheaper' but recently they got pretty pricey in Poland.

As to fast food, i don't eat it regularly but they are good on journeys. Actually i eat at McDonald's only when I stop at filling station during a longer trip.
On daily basis, if I need a fast meal I take a Turkish kebab - they're ubiquitous in the cities in Poland. Not sure if it's fast food or not.

Wow, where did he live that the winter traumatized him so much? Suwałki? We don't get that mamy low temp days. I guess it's a matters of perspective, so -10C would be considered freezing, but frost induced tears is rarery heard of 😄

Hard you haven't been to Poland. I don't kinda get the cold part, the winters are above 0C or close to 0C and we barely got snow, like maybe 2weeks of snow in a year outside the mountain area so compared to NY or Chicago not even talking about high up north of US saying it is cold in Poland is kinda strange.

At the beginning of my Internet career - about 30 years ago - I met on ICQ a girl from Glasgow, a chemistry teacher, whom I managed to convince to try Polish sausage. She bought it in a Polish store and was extremely surprised that it contained garlic. She was also delighted and munched it as we wrote each other. 🙂
