Not a Whovian (I feel like they're here just for David Tennant) but his acting is great. He's very entertaining especially when Hamlet goes mad. The whole company took a play that's difficult to understand, made it a little modern and added a competent cast. I feel like this is great to show anyone who has a hard time understanding how a Shakespeare play might look. I kept the book handy while watching this, it helped out.
Yes, I did like him in Doctor Who, but I also loved him in this because he's also amazing at playing creepy sociopaths. I'm also here for Patrick Stewart. Don't jump to stupid conclusions.😑
As a retired theater reviewer, I’ve seen umpteen Hamlets and find this one far and away the best. David Tennant opens the dialogue up and uses such interesting body language to create the whole. He’s aided by a director with a unique vision and an excellent cast, some better than others. But where is the last act?
David Tennant is a brilliant actor. I have loved him since Takin' Over the Asylum. Sadly I never got to watch him in any Theater production not taped since I do not have acces to Britens Theater world. But in no way am i surprised that he pulls that off brilliantly too. Whovians are ok. If the show teacher them about Davids brilliancy 👍 to The Doctor for that.
This is making my Eng 461 Shakespeare class so much better. Tennant is brilliant in his shifts from madness and torment to foolery and comedy. Davies (Polonius) is freaking hilarious too.
DT was fantastic in this performance. One of the few performances of the Dane that nearly brought me to tears. Patrick Stewart as well was uncanny...just like the 1980 performance in the same role. Applause to all.
WOAH! I believe I better understand and heard Hamlet for the first time with this group of people and the director. So grateful it's recorded. Masterclass performance from David Tennant, Sir Stewart. What an incredible experience.
I was lucky enough to see the staged version this was based on, at the RSC Courtyard theatre in Stratford, it was SO Good! It had a lot more humour than this filmed version, the characters don’t spark off each other as well. But I guess that’s the difference between live theatre and location filmed. Wish they’d just filmed it at the theatre, it was just an experience, SO Good!! #Hamlet #DavidTennant #TheRSC #TheRoyalShakespeareCompany
This stars David Tennant as Hamlet and Patrick Stewart as King Claudius, which is why, when I watched it with my dad, he called it "Picard vs. The Doctor"!
I kinda wish they did these Shakespeare plays with modern stuff just keep the original text it’s kinda funny I remember watching the 2010 Macbeth with Patrick Stewart and thinking this is weird but fun lol
Can anyone tell me why the director/screenplay writer decided to have this out of order? "To be or not to be" is in act 3, scene 1. "Now I'm alone" is in act 2, scene 2. Yet in this film, they decided to have "To be or not to be" first...
It helps the story flow better. Just like in Henry IV Part 1, most people read it(and watch it) Act 1:2 and then Act 1:1 because it seems to flow better and you get a better understanding of the characters. :) Hope I helped!
Seh ich da jean-Luc? The captain? that`s great! In whole, a good performance! Who did the modern text? That makes the game near to me and uthers - I hope. Thrilling the two games in the game! And now: I want to see the second part! Where is he?
I thing you mean at 44:38. Act II, Scene 1 "Marry, sir, here’s my drift, And I believe it is a fetch of wit." Why are you surprised that a common term in use today originated from Shakespeare? There are so many of them, and quite a lot from Hamlet. Act III, Scene 1 "To sleep, perchance to dream. Ay, there’s the rub" Act II, Scene 2 "Though this be madness, yet there is method in ’t." (most often expressed as "there's method in his madness")
I do love Branagh. But, I think this cast has more understated realistic acting than that one did. This has surpassed Branagh's as my favorite. As far as Dr. Who, I only watched the ones Tennant was in because it's usually too cheesy for my taste, but he bring a gravitas that makes it enjoyable.
OSCEG Why does everyone think someone underacting is natural and realistic? Is it not possible to give an emotional performance and at the same time have it be realistic? I think so...
I see what you mean about the casting. There were several actors and performances I didn't care for in Branagh's Hamlet. I also really love Doran's I.iii and that Claudius and Hamlet Sr. are twins; this makes for a more sympathetic and developed Gertrude. I still feel that Tennant's Hamlet is superficial, though. It's like he's being quirky and weird for the sake of being quirky and weird. Yes, Hamlet does act mad, but he is also ridiculously thoughtful, methodical, literary, and intellectual, and I just don't see this in Tennant's performance. He's got the mad part down okay, but Hamlet is more than that, which Branagh perfectly embodies. I also can't forgive the adapters for rearranging 'to be or not to be' to come before 'O what a rouge and peasant slave am I'. On principle, I'm not against rearranging lines. However, this particular adjustment does not work at all, at least for this film. It's too early and there is not enough plot or character development at this point to do this speech justice so early on. It makes Hamlet come off as some annoying, moody, emo teenager. Perhaps that was what the film was going for, though...
that's because they're speaking straight from Shakespeare himself (a few lines are mixed up from one act to another) but it's still very much straight from Shakespeare himself
This feels like a doctor who and star trek crossover with Patrick Stewart and David Tennant...
Bhyjaz Jazz they're all stuck in a holodeck program :)
Just blame Q
Steward is as great than the others!

This whovian liked the acting of David Tennant before he was the Doctor. Your prejudices say so much more about you then they do about us.
as a dedicated whovian david tennant obsessed i’m actually here because i study this play + movie for english literature a-level

David Tennant looks and sounds like he was born to play Hamlet. I never saw his Dr. Who!
How can people dislike David Tennant?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! IF that is even possible.... It must be a complication or something....

I'm really glad my honors literature teacher led me to a hamlet production with Tennant (massive whoivan!!!)
Captain Picard and the Doctor sharing screen time makes my geek head spin.
yo SAME
More so when you consider both Sherlock and Watson have shared time 2x, and technically a 3rd if you ever consider their MCU characters ever meeting.
David was great in this adaptation and he made a very good Scrooge McDuck.😊😊
The acting is phenomenal but the way it’s filmed is all so creative and faithful???? I’m so incredibly impressed??????
After watching Broadchurch and hearing Tennant with his Scottish accent, I felt like watching DW and this as a palate cleanser.
LDA I prefer his natural Scottish accent
what are you saying about his accent 😤😤
I don't know who's the guy who make the casting but he's a fucking genius!!
I totally agree

Nice one!
My theory: there are only so many actors in the UK and they are all brilliant.
C'est une très agréable interprétation. La langue Anglaise , pure, est agréable à l'oreille
Awesome! Gotta love David Tennant!! Does anyone know if there is a part two somewhere??

I love how this actor portrays Polonius as an obvious senile old crazy fool. Poor Ophelia , to have a dad like that.
Hamlet, your Ten is showing...
I am only here for David Tennant XD

i love David Tennant and Patrick Stewart

I bought the book No Fear Shakespeare to better understand everything. Great work!
Pretty sure this is the Doctor in his time without a companion
Brilliant and funny as well👏👏👏Tennant is fantastic👏👏👏

There is more than one version of Hamlet, and the staging can vary. The folios were different than later versions.
The guy who played hamlet is like a British Jim carry
That's quite the insult to David Tennant
Andrew Burke very much so... 😳
Extreme insult to David! Jim Carey could never match Mr Tennant if Carey were given a million molecules of Tennant's wit.

Does anyone else prefer Kenneth Branagh? Not to sound too critical, but David Tennant just feels a bit phony in comparison...
I prefer Branagh, his Hamlet is the definitive one, Tennant is overrated mostly because of biased Doctor Who fans
Amadeus Dredd You didn't back up any of your points and the dr who fans are biased? Riiight.
