  • Ever since she left office on May 20, former President Tsai Ing-wen has largely stayed out of the public eye, mainly engaging the public through social media. But on Thursday, she put in an appearance at Guangrong Elementary School in Chiayi County. This century-old establishment became an experimental school three years ago. Speaking on campus, Tsai applauded the school for its innovative mission.

After May 20, I took a month off. I felt that life was pretty easy, but there seemed to be some things in the outside world that deserved my attention.
Former President Tsai Ing-wen went to Chiayi on Thursday. In the afternoon, she visited Guangrong Elementary School in Yizhu Township, Chiayi County.

Thank you for blazing an innovative education path in Taiwan. However, we also want to thank the parents for being willing to let their children be schooled in this innovative environment.
The century-old Guangrong Elementary School transformed into an experimental elementary school three years ago. It’s the first government-established school in Chiayi that’s operated by a private entity. The elementary school and its preschool have a total of 55 students. Besides teaching the usual academic subjects, the school fosters student inquiry and innovative thinking.

There’s a good deal of variation in our curriculum. For example, in our academic courses, we offer a lot of differentiated instruction and integrate many digital platforms.
Tsai was accompanied by Chiayi County Commissioner Weng Chang-liang as she visited the school campus. A cat and dog lover, Tsai bumped into the school dog and stopped to give it a pat.
Since stepping down on May 20, Tsai has kept a low profile, mainly interacting with the public through the social media platform Threads. Her most recent post was about celebrating the 16th birthday of her dog Maru. A cute photo of her posing with the dog received 30,000 “likes” from internet users. Although she’s no longer in power, Tsai appears to be as popular as ever.
