The only way to do it,is doing it right! The more you compact the sub roadbed the better the foundation! Pack it til you think it’s been pack enough and your arms dal off, then do it again! 39 years experience!
After packing, the most important three things are drainage, drainage, drainage.
That is what it's designed for flat , EVEN surfaces. not for going up hill. You are right it will do a very nice job on your first coarse of ballast.
I have this machine to compact soil and aggregate for a raised paver patio project I am doing with my spouse. It was totally worth the cost to avoid the project planning around rentals. We already have difficulty finding time to work on the project due to our work schedules and weather issues. We have a mix of clay and sandy soils. In the sandy spots it works well but in the clay areas we needed to amend the soil with S type mortar (as per the hardscape pro recommendations) which allowed much better compaction. We were conservative and didn't go more than 3 inches per lift with Class 5 (DGA). It would have taken us ages to do what we did with the hand tamper and it wouldn't have been nearly as compact. The Class 5 aggregate compacted to an almost concrete level of firmness. The cost was less than three days of rental from the local ma and pa rental place which is cheaper than the big boxes. I look forward to using it as we progress through the project with 3/4 clean gravel and at the end to compact the pavers. We will also use it to prepare a gravel base for a extra backyard shed.
A perfect illustration of what can be the vast difference between "simple" and "easy." 🙂
Very true. If I pull this thing with a tractor, then compacting loose soil won't be as difficult.
I´m so glad Aaron you tryed it. For years i was wondering if it can be useful for tampering fresh ballasted track. Like you said, it seems pretty hard to use on non flat ground or wet sticky soil. Can it be use on track without damaging rails ? May be it can be use with heavy grass roller at the begining and finish with that "shaker".
With your projected lenght extension, pick and shovel isn´t enough. Hope to see more. Thanks for your backbreaking effort.
This machine would not do good things to the track. It's more for compacting things before you put the track down.
@@MillBrookRailroadthat was my fear. Thanks for answering.
@@danielfantino1714 I'll have to come up with a machine to do the tamping.
For their size and what they are able to do is well worth the ability of it bro. Safe travels. Ken.
I think your dirt is a bit to sticky for the compactor to move freely . Also being on a slope . Maybe try side to side. Should be fine on ballast. You'll figure it out. It will save you a lot of work compacting.
Say, I didn't see it arrive by rail. lol.
I believe you're right. I think the handle on the front is for towing.
My husband just purchased this and we are having trouble getting it to run. Do you have any tips? It sounds like it was to turn over then stalls and starts to smoke
Too much oil maybe
Or low oil wire or the carbs bad clean it
Hahaha. Plate tampers are not made for clay dirt. These machines are designed for crushed gravel or sand. I'm quite surprised it made it that far on that material. For this material l you need a sheeps food pad roller or jumping jack. Cheers!
Yea, this video was quite amusing 😂
I do have other videos where I use it properly.
Awesome video 😊
It seems too hard to push /pull especially on a hill. Thanks for your video.
It has a tow loop on the front that looks like a handle.
That's because it's not meant to smooth out surfaces. It's meant to pack down already smooth surfaces. 😂
On hills, you always go downhill btw
Im sorry but how can you say its a good machine when you were struggling to use it. Im sure the ideal that you got it free has something to do with it. But a honest review would be better appreciated. Kinda lacks honestly to your channel. Js
I think this video does a better job. ua-cam.com/video/Qt-0Q7obmn0/v-deo.html
@@MillBrookRailroad this is a second video. On the first video you are saying it's a good machine not knowing that it would work better on different types of materials. My point is that you have to be honest on every review. If the machine didn't work well you must state that if you want your opinion to count to the community. If the unit works better on the second video then say well this is definitely a big improvement from the last time I use this machine ect. That shows that you are giving your honest opinion and not being bought by companies to just give you items for a positive review. You have to be honest if you are making actual reviews is all I am saying
Hello there.the plate compactor don't go well on dirt.😢if you throw some balling on the dirt. It will run good
Thanks for the tip
Sorry to laugh but I just learned a lesson and you seem to be doing exactly what I did. They don't like to compact dirt unless dry! And works better when more of rocky areas. Also when vibrating you will cause water to seep upwards, which was weird and like said, learned a lot the first few times using. But found out they compact rocks better than just dirt. Best of luck and only thing I'd say would be ear and eye protection. Have fun is all I can say cause you'll get a workout for sure.
It’s doing fairly good , dirt does look a little tacky
The dirt was fairly tacky from a couple weeks of rain.
that thing is slow as Molasses Good Video Aaron! Cheers From Michigan See you tonight on the live stream
It is much faster on ballast.
@jeffhall, just an idea. Don´t know if those things are just for flat terrain or also good on Hill ?
They're for fairly flat gravel.
1000x better than a hand tamper. Lol
You got that right!
Didn’t look like it worked well to me. I’ll be interested to see it work on stone
What I've learned is that they don't work well in dirt. They do work quite well on stone, however. Video coming soon.
Please use hearing protection when running these things...
My bad. I'm usually the one telling people to use hearing protection, and here, I forgot it myself in the excitement of the moment.
Would you ever own guinea pigs?
Probably not. The railroad is already one big guinea pig.
@@MillBrookRailroadlol that's true 😂
there not made for compacting wet dirt, They are perfect for base rock
Thanks. I had to find out. It has proven to be a very useful tool. It'll be showing up in our videos every now and then.
I hear bad things about buying from Vevor.. supposedly they'll send you things that other people have returned...BBB has a notice on their company for consistent bad experience
I'll make a note of that. Have you had any firsthand experience with them? How did it go?
@@MillBrookRailroad i have not bought one yet... So much cheaper than the other brands though I'm about to pull the trigger either way... They say they got a 1-year warranty
how hard is it to push?
Not hard at all on gravel.
May be in hilly places, if you pull it with your Deere. Will be better with a helper driving your tractor and you that compactor. As long as it won´t end up upside down in the ditch 😅
Putting either machine in the ditch would complicate things.
If you have to pull this thing with a tractor, you're using it wrong.
I have one... It is slow and clunky, it is light, about 150lbs... It would be a nice inexpensive piece if you already have a Wacker
Nearly a year after I filmed this video, I found the niche for this machine. It is great for tamping small areas, like ballast, before I lay any track down and fixing potholes in the driveway.
Good little machine just what you need for your planned expansion. Looks like it would be easier to pull rather than push though at least until the ground gets more compacted. 😊
I've figured out that it works great on ballast.
What can I do when the compactor starts but can't move
Well I would assume that it depends on the type of ground you compacting depends on how easy it is to run 😁👍
That is definitely the case. I tried it on ballast the other day, and it basically propels itself forward.
