  • Prairie Voices joins the University of Manitoba Singers to perform Frode Fjellheim's "Eatnemen Vuelie" at Westminster United Church. March, 2009. The distinctive nasal tone is "yoiking," a form of traditional singing from Scandinavia.

    This is Fjellheim's version of a beloved Scandinavian hymn (Deilig er jorden), much used at Christmas and burials. The combination of a joik-like style of singing, the drum and the strong rhythm makes a nice contrast to the hymn, which is otherwise most distinct when the choir sings "normally". I dont know South Sami language, which is Fjellheim's mother tongue, but I guess the text is some translation of the originally Danish text. English text is "Fairest Lord Jesus".

    Nice Song, but I have to correct you, the Joik is from the Sámi-people who live in Norway, Sweden and Finland. But this joik is from Norway, since Frode Fjellheim is norwegian.
