    i was blue in the game.... if i let u have the other plus 4 u would have ran over me so it would have resulted in me giving u the game which of course i was not going to do that... that being said i broke u twice and only hit a 1 each time and u hit my 10 and i was trying rlly rlly hard not to end my game, one thing this video does not show is me adding troops to my exterior position EVERY SINGLE TURN basically which was a HUGE misplay on your part and would have changed your view of this game through out knowing i had another 50 troops.... u had 150 troops after u lost your 44 stack...u didn't have to go out swinging" black backed away from purple after losing a bigger % of his troops 10 turns b4 and put himself in a position to win... i was very disappointed u ruined my tourney but i understand u thought i was weaker then i was as well...

      I noticed you didn't practice these settings on the discord.
      I'm going to release the full video and you can see my unedited thoughts if you care to.
      There was a world where we didn't ruin each others tournaments but of course there's no way to communicate. I would encourage you to consider the merits of good neighbour theory and how they could have applied to us that game.
      As disappointed as you may be I can say that I had more to lose so I share the exact same sentiment.

      I like your moves, to be honest.
      Your moves are *rational and logical*, making sure not much threat from the front and behind.
      However, your rationale may underestimate another player's *emotional* aspect. I can feel your aggressiveness in those moves. That's what I've usually done in a bad way & often encountered suicide by others in the game.🥲
      Nevertheless, both of you played a good game, and I would probably die earlier than both of you if I were in the same game.

      @@adammarkland at the start of watching this video I was like screw that guy blue is being a dick. But I totally understand the reason you made those moves and ultimately you were trying to win the game as much as Pete was and you couldn’t let him get that strong that early. {And now don’t think you’re a dick :) }
      I think the challenge was that Pete lost large stacks early on and was desperately trying to recover the whole game, he got to a position where he was starting to feel more comfortable and you took out 20-25% of his troops.
      I know if that happened to me I’d suicide into them in a heartbeat out of pure frustration of being so close then it being taken away. It’s 100% the emotional aspect of the game that killed it for you.
      GG’s to both of you. It was good to watch.

      Same, mad props to Pink's dedication. When he left the zombies open to come back I swear my heart stopped (1:03:00 in the video). Could someone who understands zombies tell me whether he was in real danger there? I know almost literally nothing about the player and I still would've been devastated to see that work go to waste. I hope those 2 points carry Pedro all the way to the top.

      @@Smithers888 Well, I think it's safe to say he didn't risk losing the game to the zombies, with such great technique he will inevitably win unless he blunders big time. But I feared he would have to start the endgame all over again building back from a 2 territory bonus, which would mean a couple of hours more.

      I wanted to comment on this because I’ve had some people make recommendations to me as well. This is someone’s art. I feel it would be rude to go to Picasso and tell him he should do his art like Leonardo. I know the intention is good but creating content and the time spent on it so people could watch for free should just be a “thank you” and not overstepping as a viewer by telling others how to make their art. I mean this with love because you probably don’t realize what it takes to make content and that it’s strange to tell others how to create it.

    • @unforsaken2k1
      @unforsaken2k1 Рік тому +2

      Agreed, the cuts are well done. However; there is a loss of the 'feel' of the game by not seeing the delay in choices, the other players taking time on certain portions of their turn, all that goes into the atmosphere and ties the emotional to the logical for me.

      I agree, the raw videos are better. I wouldn’t do this zooming in thing that all the other streamers do. It’s a bit forced humour. Just my opinion, I’m sure people disagree, but one thing I liked about this channel is the lack of the mainstream editing practices.

    Good Game Pete! I hope we can play again soon with perhaps more "active" settings. I was very curious to see your perspective on this one. I appreciate the kind words you gave me in your video, it means a lot. I could definitely agree with the idea to not need to kill the zombies entirely to this extent. It was an oddly fun puzzle to solve but also almost 4 hours of zombies was a bit much ;' )

Once again, Pete, respect!

  • @jamiereason

    I think blue played a really good game and letting Pete have the second bonus whilst he was stuck with a small bonus would've let Pete run away with it. However, blitzing the stack and letting the zombies in was detrimental to Petes game and I can understand why Blue might have been salty because i think most players would have not retaliated but instead scrambled to reconstitute. That being said, Pete has been outspoken that he will not be bullied and I think most will agree that move left Pete in a losing position so suiciding at least kept up his reputation to discourage similar aggressive behaviour towards him in the future. He wasn't throwing a tantrum and taking blue down with him, he was accepting that he was put in a losing position and taking the chance at taking blue bounty whilst also echoing that there are consequences to playing aggressively against him.
    I think it is also worth saying (with hindsight) Pete was maybe too aggressive trying to get a second bonus and if he had of tried to build a second position and just build his bonus defence, blue may have been less likely to target him to prevent him taking the whole game.

      > i think most players would have not retaliated but instead scrambled to reconstitute.
      Which would technically be the best play for this game. Who knows, maybe he could've survived to 5th place. Still not going to advance in this tournament. But this play isn't about points; it's about sending a message.
      Pete's playing the iterated prisoner's dilemma. The best play long term is not the best play in this game, it's the play that says "you play ball with me and I'll play ball with you, but if you bring me down then I will make sure you come with."

    • @acallan1
      @acallan1 Рік тому

      @@ce5779OP was 100% correct here IMO. Seeing the game from Blue's perspective Pete was asking them to start a war of attrition w/ Purple for the *privilege* of getting 2 fewer troops per turn than Pete w/ only 1 less border OR to sit tight vs Pete's unguarded border while Pete got 5 more troops than him. While that kind of good neighbor approach can be very savvy in Prog, Caps & is also seen in non-Fog Fixed tourney games when there are ample bonuses that is a recipe for losing in a Fixed-Fog-Zombies game when Blue doesn’t have another bonus to expand into for parity.
      Blue likely didn’t attack Magenta bc they presumably had strong guards in each position due to the Zombies & Blue had already broken Pete's bonus so breaking a 2nd opponent would put you at risk of getting double teamed. It was certainly worth trying to get the 2nd bonus especially w/ the tax that comes from being 1st to act after the Zombies but once Blue made it clear they wouldn’t let Pete have it unguarded it feels like you have to be opportunistic there & only take it if good card luck let’s you defend. Blue's slider attack to let the Zombies in was a no win move for either side but besides that I can’t see any other way for them to play it w/o handing the game to Pete in a manner that doesn’t even ensure they get 2nd so it felt like a good game that obv isn’t going to leave either side happy but such is life in tourney games especially w/ settings like Fixed-Zombies that add even more RNG than usual 🤷‍♂️ GGWP to all, especially Pedro for finishing that marathon!

    I appreciate the work that went into editing this, but the cuts, zoom ins and music overlay really take away what I love about your videos.
    These are hour long videos. The ticktock editing style really doesn’t fit this format. People who watch a risk game for an hour just want the gameplay, your thoughts and your reactions. You don’t need the distractions to keep our attention. In fact the opposite is true. They are just an obnoxious layer of interference between us viewers and the real content we enjoy.

If they made a great play or stopped you from making a good play, that is all part of the game. Does it feel good? No, not to you. But they are happy they suceeded. Rather than be angry, try to be happy they did something great and remember that this is a game.

    Pete I was filled with rage seeing the blue player continuously target you, ultimately leading to both of your demise, but afterwards, while you were giving your calm explanation of “why did this happen”, I think blue noticed how purple let the zombies in and attempted that tactic to try to progress the game in his favor. Obviously didn’t work. Everyone was trying to win, given their position and circumstances. He made a move, and it failed/backfired, just as you made a move for a second bonus. After a while, you realized a second bonus wasn’t going to happen, and adjusted accordingly, whereas I think blue was still under the impression you were going for the second bonus still, who knows?

    Love the video Pete! Mad props to whoever edited this one from 5+ hours to just over 1. And I 100% agree with your post game commentary regarding intersubjectivity in Risk. I have long held the belief that in Risk, people make decisions (or at least should be making decisions) that give them the best chance to win, given the limited information they have to work with. This is why learning to think how others think is such an important skill for Risk, because if you can predict how others will behave, then you can increase your own chances of winning because you have more information to base your decisions off of. This is also why it can be frustrating, at times, to watch other players make seemingly "bad" decisions, as they don't have the information you have. Whenever I see a player make what I consider to be a "bad" decision, I try to myself in their shoes and see if I can't figure out why they made the decision they did. Now, I'm by no means perfect, as I had (and still have) my moments where I get perhaps a bit too frustrated, but it's human nature to get flustered from time to time. I can only hope that my introspective moments outweigh my flustered ones. Thanks as always for everything you do!

    I really liked blue’s game for 95% of the game - giving Pete the other +4 would have been giving Pete 1st place. I feel reasonably confident that if blue had allowed that to happen, once Pete had become big enough, he would have eaten up blue. However, the slider blitz was an awful move and it’s surprising he doesn’t recognize that.
    I think Pete definitely overextended at 17:25, with the Zombie 17 stack and 12 stacks right next to his 10 and 8s respectively - was concerned the moment the turn ended. Far from Pete’s caliber but I’d have focused on securing those borders, and then trying to force the second +4 issue. That one turn set Pete back a lot, but ultimately it didn’t matter due to blue’s final and highly suboptimal play.
    Still, a great tournament! Loved watching you and this video, as usual, was highly informational. I would definitely cut down on the fancy animations that were present at the start of the video - I think you should focus on shorts more marketing-wise, possibly summarizing the games you play into 1 minute clips with reactions.

    Congratulations on making it so far in the tournament. My thoughts:
    Free-for-all works as a party game; it does not work for an elimination tournament. Anyone, at any time, for any reason, can ruin their own game and someone else's. It's fun to watch you take on five random strangers and pull out a win in a low-stakes games, but a free-for-all tournament with one-round elimination is inherently flawed. As we've seen.
    The only way to make this work is a kind of free-for-all round robin: choose settings that make the games really fast, and play a lot of games with random player lineups. That way, one round like this doesn't sink a player's tournament. However, as we've seen, the tournament organizers are unwilling or unable to choose appropriate settings.
    All the best.

      @@TheKillPeteStrategy This one game, and the discussion on both videos, has been edifying.
      Risk has always been a free-for-all game with alliances, betrayals, and grudges. It makes it more fun to watch, it's part of the strategy, and the top players accept it. And free-for-all Risk can work as a competitive game - but it comes down to the settings. And I'm not just talking about the terrible elimination format.
      What's the excuse for capitals in round 2? For zombies in round 4? Are those settings so skill-intensive that they justify the five-hour games? I haven't seen any evidence of that. Whereas your basic progressive games, either 70% or world domination, are always dynamic and fun to watch, without seeming any less skillful.
      If the tournaments exclusively ran progressive cards, no capitals, no zombies, on a variety of fun maps, leading to 30 or 40-minute games - well, apart from all the other benefits, you could play a lot more games, so randomness would be a smaller factor and skill a relatively larger one. Every once in a while, your game would be ruined by someone else's questionable play, but it would only cost you some points in game 3 of 5 from round 2 of 4 or whatever, which seems more palatable.
      Your round 3 win was the highlight of the tournament. Imagine a league that runs progressive cards, no capitals, no zombies, and 70% domination for every game.
      Well, best of luck in the next tournament, whatever the settings may be.

    The issue in this round is neither of you could see what the other person was trying to do and you guys miscalculated. Because each player had a methodology as to how to play to win, and Pete being firm in his strategy, This round exposed the hole in both players strategies when confronted and when left to guessing. Because there was no emote communication from Pete (makes sense) there simply was no communication. We had no idea if blue hitting Pete was simply his best play for a card, his other side could have been an impenetrable wall. SO what appears to us as an act of aggression could actually have been an act of desperation.
    Territory I.O is another risk like strategy game at a much faster pace with more players. Even the best strategy can totally lose in that game, there are so many factors involved, vere little is ever guaranteed. This round had too many factors going on that hindered strategy.

    So here's my thoughts on the situation Pete (The last paragraph is my thoughts; the following is a preface). For perspective, I've been ranked as high as 57 on FFA without gimmicked wins. I also approach my games with the same mind set of I really want to be good neighbors. I have to credit you a lot for what I know about risk as I started playing Risk: Global Domination because of your videos. Even though I've learned a lot from you, I personally believe that player behavior (including mine) is mostly due to the following factors:
    1. Experience - i.e. risk aversion being more common with players who care about placement/rank; the strategies one develops during games at various levels of play, etc.
    2. Personality - i.e. Degree of Patience, degree of desire to avoid conflict (e.g. Alpha/Beta personality), level of trust the player tends to extend freely, the understanding of what is rude play vs. what is fair game play (this also goes with experience and the level of the game, but there are manners in Risk I think people expect others to abide by (though the expectations may be different for every player), temper control (w/in game: how many times can someone piss you off before you snap), are you okay with not placing first (many fight to the last breath against whoever is damaging them. I tend to target realistic placement. If I see I don't stand a chance, I take out the player bot, or whatever).
    3. Schedule - i.e. some individuals opt to suicide when they need to leave/get bored (really annoying, there's a resign button for those situations ... assuming a well mannered game).
    Thoughts on Blue and the situation:
    Anyway, I'm sure there's plenty more traits I could preface this with, but to get to the point, the blue player had an interesting approach that would be very difficult to deal with. I would have done something very similar to you for most of that game. However, here's some differences I noticed. When you split 5/6, you didn't re-trade with purple on that spot. I would have expended the extra troop or two risking a lower guard to attempt to ensure that purple had a place to hit for cheap that wasn't my bonus. Now, purple might've still broken or might not have, but for the sake of argument, let's say he didn't break, that would've created an interesting dilemma for blue the following turn when he sees a semi-lightly guarded border and you obtaining two bonuses. I don't know what blue would've done, but given you had the move prior to blue, assuming you reinforced the lightly guarded border of 5/~4 (not six because you traded with purple) to let's say 7/6, that's a fairly expensive hit at that stage. Again, purple may still have broken at any point, but he seemed to be a little more non-conflict focused than blue, so if I were to guess, at least one of those turns, purple would let you keep it without breaking for trading rights and hoping blue expends his troops instead). I see purple as a smart opportunistic player who doesn't desire to waste troops unnecessarily. Blue was a smart tactical player who has aggressive play, but not downright provocatory play (hence he didn't break your second bonus). If I were to guess. Blue knew you were holding some of the best bonuses on the board very early on and he had a small bonus. I suspect blue would be the player on a classic map who if playing in South America, pushes and sits and trades in North rather than placing a large external trading position in Asia. Or the Australia player who ensures that the North America player cannot obtain that extra troop/card blocks North America. Basically, smart play, but taking an active stance on how things are going to be, rather than a passive play). Your conversation with Blue at the end speaks a lot to his personality as he didn't recognize trades on unguarded bonuses and hitting to let zombies in as provocative play. I'm sure he saw it as aggressive and expected some manner of retaliation (hence him stacking 120... perhaps he wanted the kill, who knows, but you had a lot of troops to hit at that point). Like you, I would have seriously considered suiciding into him hoping to place better than I otherwise would. But the other thought that crossed my mind was switching and taking the bottom bonus only, letting zombies remain up top. The risk with that is now both blue and purple may see you as small enough to kill after clearing it out. I would be curious to see if blue backed off some if you slow rolled him with your smaller stack for a few troops and gave the fist bump emote after final break; however, with the assumption that you took the bottom bonus instead of suiciding. If you still have contact with him, you should ask him what his intent was at the end.
    Post remark: When blue moved his troops out of the way, that was very impressive play. I think that took us both off guard, I think that deserved a well played :P

      What a great analysis. I see things mostly similar.
      I'm surprised nobody has responded to your comment.
      I didn't go for the bottom bonus because it was worse in every way. 1 extra territory, 1 extra front, still next to an antagonistic player and also next to another who was shown to be willing to slider blitz black's stack on that portal. So that thought may have crossed my mind but it was off the table very quickly. As far as an ongoing dialogue with the blue player, he made his comments on this video and as you can see, he is not yet in a position mentally to recieve the information that could improve his game. And I have many more things to do with my time than talk to people who can't, don't or won't listen.

      Thank you Pete for taking the time to read + thoughtfully reply to my lengthy comment (length: hence why no one else likely bothered replying rofl ). I value that :) especially since I spent a great deal of time writing it specifically for you :). I want to provide some thoughts in reply to your reply and perhaps an additional comment or two.
      Thoughts w/ respect to your reply:
      First, I will concede you are the better player and that I actually agree with what you said. My continued discussion is playing devil's advocate as I think taking the bottom bonus carried significant risks of appearing weak and easy fodder. Purple attacking black on portal would be concerning for you in taking the south bonus.
      I guess I had a couple thoughts to point out, which I'm sure you considered. One, purple significantly reduced his stack on that attack on black and irritated what was a strong player, purple likely still wants cheap trades which I suspect you would have only given him if he let you retain the bonus, and I bet purple was hoping blue keeps wasting troops on you. Blue doesn't have a portal. Blue was concerned about your dominance. And blue was happy to utilize zombies against you. The south position limits the zombie stacks that blue can see to zero. Not to say blue wouldn't hit hoping you lose the bonus. However, you'd no longer be the dominant player posing any long-term threat by possessing only one bonus without your stack aiming at him due to the portal guard, and having no where to grow to without him knowing. Hopefully he'd switch objectives for a period of time, even if just trading with pink.
      I'm slightly unsure whether the bonus sacrifice to let zombies in was solely intended for you. Blue would have known Purple's protective stacks, the AI loves hitting completed continents, and either direction it goes would have been beneficial for blue. I'm assuming blue wasn't aware of the predefined directional movement of Expert zombies on that map. (BTW, I cannot find where that information is, do you know, I'd love to study up on it). All that said, I would guess it was meant for you. Just a thought I didn't hear you bring up.
      Once smaller, but directly adjacent to purple's large portal stack, any kill on you by blue could lead to the demise of blue due to purple seizing the opportunity to steal blue's bonus post significant troop loss. Blue demonstrated the willingness to let you retain a single bonus so that would be the hope. Albeit, small. If blue were any non-grandmaster player, I would not bet on blue deciding to back off (hence where experience comes into play). However, blue was a strong player and there might've been a chance especially since it was a tournament game. (side comment: I hope you keep releasing videos following the progression of the tournament even if you are unable to participate directly. I'm curious to see what happens with game settings and whether key players you personally know pull it out).
      Regarding having no desire to speak to him again, I can't blame you. Certain people royally piss us off in risk and we refuse to play with them again willingly, etc. I've done the same thing where I see who's hosting and am like absolutely not. (e.g. The host refused to let my early game 6+ troops through to exit the territory he wanted when he knew he could have. And when I tried to communicate it to him, he not only eliminate that stack, and proceeded to blow through another continent just to take out everything I had to the count detriment of himself. All he had to do was let me through in any of the multiple turns I waited for him to let me leave (this was early game mind you). So yeah, not playing with him again lol. Bit of a grudge.

The idea that you're going to end someone's game, and expect them to just white flag and call it a day is a fundamental misunderstanding of how tournament games go. But, when all is said and done, I'm sure it's a lesson learned.

    Pete i think further practice was needed while considering having an interior stack with a minimum of 2/3 of your outer stacks to fend off zombies when you get broken or zombies infect. While that type of play doesn't get you bounties in a tournament settings it does give a extra weapon in having zombie infections hurting your opponents. Considering how big some stacks were for blue and purple if they got infected there games would be sunk and you being first had the better chance to kill them.
    Most your practise games i saw you play had you in the centre of the map where multiply stacks for ground worked, not sure how many practise games had you in the corners of the map but it seems like it relies on a different strategy to the centre, especially so when your opponents were aggressive in keeping you from expanding.

    Can someone explain what the upside to the zombies mode is? It seems to introduce a big random factor that reduces the effect of skill in the game.

    • @mustavogaia2655
      @mustavogaia2655 Рік тому +1

      Zombie generation is kind of OP, but surviving them is a skill in itself. And on mid-high level games, it is maybe the only random thing remaining, as player can calculate odds and expected value on each attack. I dont love it, particularly when includes fog, but I can understand the value.

      Most of the players I've seen tend to agree; Zombies + Progressive = Good : Zombies + Fixed = Bad
      I tend to agree.

    Also to add: the decisions by red and blue were based on partial game information because of fog. You have no way to communicate and you make moves based on a partially visible map. No one player made a bad move. Its a game where you are trying to score points and make eliminations. The stack moving to help the zombies kill red is inspired. IF blue gets the kill on red.

    GG best of luck next year. great insight at the end of the video. it help me learn some of the benefits of being a good neighbor, which seemed like a weird concept to me when i first started watching your VODs (as someone who only played the boardgame in person and not used to this style of online meta) . it seemed strange to let your opponents build up freely but i can see it also helps you grow as well. in these point/bounty formats it isn't always about winning as much as not coming in last and building good neighbors prolongs your position on the board.

      Good neighbour theory is actually a pretty advanced concept that we usually see in Risk once players reach grandmaster and above (but not always)

    Enjoyed the video. I thought you did well coming back from a rough position at the end of turn 1. In the end you did what you had to do. That's the way the Risk cookie crumbles. Great display of patience by magenta in the end. Really amazing to come back from one troop.

    Sorry to see you go out, Pete. You gave blue every chance to be a good neighbor, not retaliating for breaking the second bonus and not trying to retake it either. The communication aspect of this game is really interesting, and seems quite challenging at times.

    Instead of just talking about the last few turns of your game I just wanted to say I think you did amazing based on your start, like i feel as though the amount of unluck and unfortunate events that happened to you was crazy! Yet, you still somehow survived for many many rounds later. Its sad to see the journey end for this tournament (for the both us :( ) but im super hyped to see the next tourneys coming out soon and see your skills go back to work!

    I'm sorry to find out that you are out of the tournament. I'd love to have played against you in the tournament. But knowing your greatest motivation is inspiring so many people to play risk comforts me.
    For myself I played well so far in the tournament (with some bumps - no hard feelings Silent ;-)) and will just make the cut into the quarter finals. This is much thanks to your channel

    Use the emote to misdirect and mislead. Use Ooops at key moments to draw attention to apparent mistakes. Weave a web of desception if possible. Most of the time it is not. But you gotta work with what you got.
    For instance, act like you don't know that your one territory connects onto blue territory around the snow blocking the path.
    Bait him into the attack by pretending you don't know. But only when it is advantageous for you for him to do so.

    ggs Pete! You show great respect to the other players and I have seen the strategy used by blue player in terms of not letting others get a big advantage early in other risk games. From my experience, it seems to help advance public games quicker, but tough to use in a competition game where it is more risky than a good neighbor situation where you wait for others to make the move instead. On a side note, I got 2nd to General Quach in my round 2 game cause he took almost every kill. I was very interested to see how he matched up against you.

    • @TheKillPeteStrategy
      @TheKillPeteStrategy  Рік тому

      It's probably a much more effective strategy in a public lobby when you are not facing off against all excellent opponents who have fought their way to the top 150 of 1000+ players.

    Wow what a start of the game, from lucky to unlucky, again and again. Oh the rollercoaster of emotions there, WP and GG. Unfortunately people sometimes forget about not only practicing the game itself but also getting to know your enemies, in this case blue should know when enough if enough with our beloved Pete ;) p.s. and Pedro man your a sick puppy :)

    Blue made an enemy out of you. I would’ve suicided into them just as you did. If I’m going to lose because of one persons actions, they are not going to win that game. Blue played how he thought was his only chance to win. But playing that way is giving an excuse for your opponent to suicide into you. And a lot of people, such as myself, play risk emotionally and will suicide as you did.

    • @TheKillPeteStrategy

    I totally agree with what you said though - they played what they saw as the best move, even it it might not have been or turned out different than what they maybe thought to happen.
    About the music - son't like it, but that might be just out of habit. So, to be more constructive about it: maybe turn down it's volume bit - it seemed to be a bit too loud compared to the commentary and the game-sound.
