Yes but "just" the breadbasket. It doesn't realy matter for the EU and the US or most "western" countries as they have options when it comes to food. It is not ideal but not devastating either. "the west" should probaply be more concerned about fertiliser prizes. The problem does deserve a lot more attention, as much of africa relies on the Russian and especialy Ukrainian export. That is a potential food cricis that 100% needs to be avoided. But not a direct issue for "the west" so it doesn't get as much attention.

Not only will Ukraine have the opportunity to leverage its raw materials, at the end of this conflict the West will almost certainly provide a massive amount of aid to help Ukraine rebuild similar to the US Marshall plan. This is what will cement Ukraine as firmly oriented towards the West going forward, even if Russia is able to force them to commit to neutrality on paper.

It's worth mentioning that Ukraine's agriculture technologies are rather weak. If the sector had the same tech (including machinery and fertilizers) as some of the Western European countries (namely the Netherlands and Belgium), Ukraine's foods production output would be multiplied.
In the western part of Ukraine are already big modern farms run by Dutch farmers. German industrial machines, Dutch agritech, French powerplant tech. etc. etc. The Ukraine has the potential to become an European economic powerhouse.
The good news is that after this war is over (Hopefully) Ukraine will be stronger than before. More tanks, stronger military, it's citizen returning from other countries, and the frozen Russian war chest can be given to them.

German opposition to nuclear power in the face of continuing their hydrocarbon plants seems like a miscalculation at best and myopically emotional at worst. As a source of clean energy, nuclear is far more easy to install than renewables. Very debatable. Human capital can be restored. New people will live, love and learn. Ukraine's export markets fro grains and oilseeds are not as you say in the opening comments with China, Turkey, Pakistan and the EU its major markets pre 2022 and very little going to Africa except via Turkey that mills Ukraine and Russian wheat into flour it then exports to North Africa and the EU. Russia has long understood the value of cooperation over conflict and this was shown in its stance towards Europe before our demented politicians followed a demented US President in imposing sanctions that were known at the time to be self defeating. Russia has a long history of cooperation with China, North Korea and Vietnam. Based on a win-win strategy. China does not need to invade Russia because there are agreements allowing China its Belt and Road rail system through Russia to Europe, access to the Port of Vladivostok for Northern Chines e provinces and its navy and beneficial trade deals for both parties in energy, food and other commodities as well as access to the Russian market for Chinese goods. In addition Russia offers China the opportunity to invest in joint ventures like the Arctic sea route and gas/oil production as well as delivery pipelines like Siberia 1 and 2. Finally they have technical cooperation in he development of military technology that has spilled over into engines for civil airliners. In all these areas China and other Asian countries are replacing what should have been lucrative markets and investment opportunities for EU companies that are now going bankrupt instead.

Ukraine needs to be split in two -- east and west. Many Ukrainians (especially in the east) identify with Russia and not the EU. Putin will make that happen. The only question is where the line will be split. My guess is the Dnieper. But possibly somewhat east of that.

Ukraine has been manipulated by outside forces ever since it became an independent country in the 90s. Like so many other naturally gifted landmasses, it could be great if it wasn’t being exploited by outside forces. Russia could be great if the west wasn’t constantly trying to undermine them. The reason why I say it is too late is the combination of a near certain global recession or depression due to short term energy and food disruption driving up prices, and the fertilizer crisis fewer people are talking about which will both reduce global yields and further increase global food prices. The fertilizer crisis will really show itself in next year's crops. At least 6 nations have already put in place some sort of food export restriction or ban. @@EUenjoyer Looking at the motives for Russia to start this war, and the consequences for ending it without some version of total victory, I don't think we will see peace this year. In fact, while Russia is drawing down forces in some areas, I expect them to revert to their doctrinal roots. People think of the Russian army as a tank army, but it is not. It is really an artillery army. They will eventually regroup and rearm with conscript and reserve forces (they have 6-10 million reserves with some sort of military training) and focus on setting up artillery positions to do to all Eastern Ukrainian cities what they have done with Mauriopol and Kharkiv. Ironically, the US has an immense amount of stable, arable lands. This will *massively* strengthen the US position, as well as potentially helping certain developing regions expand their local agriculture. Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, and perhaps parts of Asia might suffer but I think this will produce more of a shift in global supply chains and less of a harsh disruption. Russia may have permanently lost its position as an important exporter.

Way too much money disappears into “thin air”, when they receive economic aid and their political system is unwilling or has difficulty implementing programs to address these systemic issues. Hopefully they will be able to realize their full potential after the war.

It's not so much that Russia wants those resources, but rather that they want to keep those resources off the market, as it would undercut Russia's energy dominance over Western Europe.

Not only will Ukraine have the opportunity to leverage its raw materials, at the end of this conflict the West will almost certainly provide a massive amount of aid to help Ukraine rebuild similar to the US Marshall plan. This is what will cement Ukraine as firmly oriented towards the West going forward, even if Russia is able to force them to commit to neutrality on paper.

It's worth mentioning that Ukraine's agriculture technologies are rather weak. If the sector had the same tech (including machinery and fertilizers) as some of the Western European countries (namely the Netherlands and Belgium), Ukraine's foods production output would be multiplied.
In the western part of Ukraine are already big modern farms run by Dutch farmers.
German industrial machines, Dutch agritech, French powerplant tech. etc. etc.

Many of ukrainian oligarchs were ethnic Russians. I think that one of the main reason for Putin to start the war was Zelensky policy to reduce their influence, especially in terms of funding political parties etc

Ukraine's export markets fro grains and oilseeds are not as you say in the opening comments with China, Turkey, Pakistan and the EU its major markets pre 2022 and very little going to Africa except via Turkey that mills Ukraine and Russian wheat into flour it then exports to North Africa and the EU. Russia has long understood the value of cooperation over conflict and this was shown in its stance towards Europe before our demented politicians followed a demented US President in imposing sanctions that were known at the time to be self defeating. Russia has a long history of cooperation with China, North Korea and Vietnam. Based on a win-win strategy. China does not need to invade Russia because there are agreements allowing China its Belt and Road rail system through Russia to Europe, access to the Port of Vladivostok for Northern Chines e provinces and its navy and beneficial trade deals for both parties in energy, food and other commodities as well as access to the Russian market for Chinese goods. In addition Russia offers China the opportunity to invest in joint ventures like the Arctic sea route and gas/oil production as well as delivery pipelines like Siberia 1 and 2. Finally they have technical cooperation in he development of military technology that has spilled over into engines for civil airliners. In all these areas China and other Asian countries are replacing what should have been lucrative markets and investment opportunities for EU companies that are now going bankrupt instead.
I think mineral resources are good, but due to the refugees fleeing Ukraine, will the country have a large enough workforce to exploit that mineral wealth?

Ukraine needs to be split in two -- east and west. Many Ukrainians (especially in the east) identify with Russia and not the EU. Putin will make that happen. The only question is where the line will be split. My guess is the Dnieper. But possibly somewhat east of that.

With it's resources, Ukraine should have already been quite rich.
Russia will ensure that Ukraine is split in two. It will control most of the eastern half and most of the Black Sea Coast if not all of it.
And if you win the war you will also be in the position to be the moral leader of europe. Everybody will listen when an ucrainenian leader speaks. That being said...russia wont stop trying to destabileze ukraine, even if they loose. If russia looses the economic/energy grip it has on europe....they will be left with only nuclear weapons for leverage...in other words...they are fcked in terms of geopolitics on their western front. They will have almost nothing to help them secure their interests towards/with europe.

Before this war. I thought Ukraine was just another backwater post-soviet state(no offence intended.) But the more I learn about it. It seems like Ukraine could be a complete powerhouse if it had the money to exploit all its resources. I really hope Ukraine is able to rise up from the ashes after the war.
Not to mention a very highly educated population but with no outlet to allow their potential to flourish so many go to the EU or further abroad.
It suffered from a lot of corruption and Russian influence stopping them from reaching their full potential. I bet they were afraid to grow because of what we've just seen.
Ukraine has been manipulated by outside forces ever since it became an independent country in the 90s. Like so many other naturally gifted landmasses, it could be great if it wasn’t being exploited by outside forces. Russia could be great if the west wasn’t constantly trying to undermine them. Much of Africa could also rise to the occasion if they weren’t constantly under the thumb of dictatorships funded by countries looking to exploit their resources (Looking at you China).

The reason why I say it is too late is the combination of a near certain global recession or depression due to short term energy and food disruption driving up prices, and the fertilizer crisis fewer people are talking about which will both reduce global yields and further increase global food prices. The fertilizer crisis will really show itself in next year's crops.
At least 6 nations have already put in place some sort of food export restriction or ban. As food prices soar through the year, and get worse next year due to the fertilizer crisis, many nations are likely to put in place export bans, as they will not be able to compete with richer nations for food on the markets.
That will mean that nations which aren't rich enough to buy food, or lucky enough to have good land to grow their own, will face 2 choices. Starve, or go to war for food. This is how WW3 will finally start.
@@EUenjoyer Looking at the motives for Russia to start this war, and the consequences for ending it without some version of total victory, I don't think we will see peace this year. In fact, while Russia is drawing down forces in some areas, I expect them to revert to their doctrinal roots. People think of the Russian army as a tank army, but it is not. It is really an artillery army. They will eventually regroup and rearm with conscript and reserve forces (they have 6-10 million reserves with some sort of military training) and focus on setting up artillery positions to do to all Eastern Ukrainian cities what they have done with Mauriopol and Kharkiv. It will take them at least a year, perhaps 2 or 3, before they would even consider peace that was not total victory. They'd kill millions of Ukrainians before considering peace that was not total victory.
War is chaotic and hard to predict, but this has been my analysis since the beginning and I dont see anything to suggest otherwise, as much as I wish I did.

Ironically, the US has an immense amount of stable, arable lands. This will *massively* strengthen the US position, as well as potentially helping certain developing regions expand their local agriculture. Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, and perhaps parts of Asia might suffer but I think this will produce more of a shift in global supply chains and less of a harsh disruption. Russia may have permanently lost its position as an important exporter.

They have an economy that on a per capita basis is similar to Eswatini’s, but exports equipment for different space programs, including to ESA and NASA, as well as airplane parts and parts for nuclear facilities, which is impressive and odd at the same time.
I would love for them to eventually be a part of the EU, which would be mutually beneficial for both Ukraine and the EU. However, they are not ready at all to join the EU. Way too much money disappears into “thin air”, when they receive economic aid and their political system is unwilling or has difficulty implementing programs to address these systemic issues. Hopefully they will be able to realize their full potential after the war.

It's no coincidence that Russia has invaded Crimea and Donbas. Roughly half or Ukraine's gas and oil deposits are in the Black Sea in the 30-mile exclusion zone off of Crimea. Half of the remaining deposits are in Donbas.
It's not so much that Russia wants those resources, but rather that they want to keep those resources off the market, as it would undercut Russia's energy dominance over Western Europe.
Exactly. It would be Kreml's worts nightmare that suddenly there would not be need for Russia's natural gas in Europe or even if the gas export was to drop significantly. Also, if Ukraine indeed managed to fully capitalize its natural resources for the benefit of their country and people like Norway does, Russia (Kreml) would have a possible future economical powerhouse and therefore most likely a strong military right next to its borders with who it does not have the best relations.

As an example, iirc Ukraine is the *only* source for scandium [necessary for high-strength aluminum alloys] available to the West; the only other mines are in Russia & China, both nations which are 1: happy to collude & 2: proven enemies of Western economies. That one fact alone may be reason enough for Putin to have attempted to overrun Ukraine.
