    Well, two of them look bluish, one green, and the rest completely black. I keep telling myself to quit watching ink reviews, as the colors are unreliable after they pass through a camera and on to a monitor. And I keep saying that swatches are only useful if you intend to write with a q-tip, since all inks (except BLACK) look different coming out of a pen. Yet here I am again, staring at the screen, trying to see blue that isn't there. I blame myself.

    Just a note: The paper comes off as medium grey and all inks as black, except maybe Pelikan 4001. Some tweak to exposure is maybe needed.

    Of the bazillion colors out there, I find myself usually using some variation of muted blue, from lighter grayish shades to deep blue blacks….currently loving simple Sailor Blue Black, Diamine Prussian Blue, and PI Shin Kai.

    The first bottle of ink I bought was Noodler's Air-Corp Blue-Black, and, though I like it, it is definitely more green than blue. It is also nicely water-resistant.

    Great vid! One of my fave blue/black inks is the DeAtrimentis Document Blue/Black.

    This was a great video! I love Blue-Blacks! Also, just a note on the Colorverse BB, it’s part of their “office-series”. It really surprised me when I tried it for the first time. It has become one of, if not my #1, absolute favorite blue-blacks of all time!

    My first two introductions into fountain pens: a grey Esterbrook J (sadly lost years ago, and what sparked my interest in most things Esterbrook. Why the first complete colour set of the J series I have is grey 😁), and Sheaffer Skrip blue-black (gotten because there was a limited selection of inks available for me in the early 1980s, and it wasn't a blue or black, but enough different that it stood out from the ballpoint pens everyone else was using). Was frankly overjoyed to see the J you used!
    I'm fairly certain that the inks that Nathan Tardif used to reverse engineer for his V-Mail series were Carter's (they were made in his home state, and he has shown a preference for Massachusetts made things, like the suspiciously similar to the Moore's Safety Pen Boston Safety Pen) which makes me want to find a bottle of WWII era Carter's blue-black to see if, like others from the time, it leaned more towards green.
    Though it's just a colour I have out of 28 different inks right now, I do have a liking for blue-black inks (probably out of nostalgia. 😉) Thanks for sharing these!

    Some great ones missing: Pelikan Edelstein Tanzanite, Diamine Twilight, Noodler’s 54th Massachussets, Rohrer & Klingner Verdigris, Pilot Iroshizuku Shin Kai, Robert Oster Thunderstorm are my favorotes.

    I really enjoyed the parade - thank you! The Pilot blue-black has peaked my interest. Iroshizuku asa-gao is one of my favourite inks, and the Pilot blue-black looked like a darker but still blue sibling.

      Asa-gao is much brighter. You’ll love the Pilot Blue Black, it’s very basic in the best way.

    Interesting. Ir is definitely hard to judge the inks on paper as you write. The cards did show the precise color combinations you were describing. I would love to know the price for each, but you are right to make his do our own research since we are in different markets. Great job, as always.

    Good blue_black line up and comparison. I have only the Lamy and Hero BB's unless you want to call Diamine Midnight a BB. I like your pen selection_ you seem to favor a wider nib and it would be good to know whether it was a Med, Broad, Stub, etc. On your 78G, that was a stub?

    • @WhatIInk
      @WhatIInk  2 роки тому +2

      The 78G is officially a broad, but it writes like a stub.

    I agree about Monteverde Blue-Black. It is somewhat better in the wider nibs. Lamy Blue-Black and Diamine Blue-Black are my favorite blue-black inks. Thanks again for another outstanding video.

    The very first fountain pen ink I bought was Pilot Blue-Black, not too long ago. I remember thinking "cool, I'll buy this package or 12 cartridges that have both blue and black ink, to see which one I prefer" 😁
    Amusing confusions aside, this color has always perplexed me, considering that there's no reason for not calling it simply "dark blue", since it won't change color to black after it has been written (AFAIK), anyway I like Pilot Blue-Black and I also have Monteverde Blue-Black, but it doesn't look the way you describe it, perhaps it's a different version? It bought it in a big 90ml bottle, instead of the 30ml you have.

    Alan, help!: how long is it safe to leave a Pilot 78g+ with a steel nib inked with Pelikan blue/black?(apparently it’s an iron gall ink but it doesn’t seem to darken with age as far as I can tell)

    • @WhatIInk
      @WhatIInk  2 роки тому +2

      That's a good question. I would think a few weeks should be fine. I have left other steel nibs inked with it for much longer without issues.

      @@WhatIInk thanks:) - slightly surprised to hear it’s not dye-based like every other blue/black in my collection, the only one I knew was iron gall based was R&K salix which seems to be much more chemically active and darkens noticeably as it dries:)

    What nib is/was in your Esterbrook "J"?
    What pen did you use for the Diamine 1864? The 2 tone nib looked like it may have been a Jinhao X450. (the 159 and X750 don't come with a 2 tone nib)
    Why no mention of water resistance? For some of us that is a major consideration. I know some of the inks have less than zero resistance to water after it is dry on the page.
    My Monteverde Jade Noir is a proper green-black. Looks black at first glance from a wettish nib. Diamine Twilight is a proper blue-black, appears black at first glance when used with a wettish nib. (a proper "___-black" ink should look black at first glance when dry.)
    Both are worthless/useless to me. ☹️ If the page gets damp they fade off the page. Nothing left but a very, very light smear. Hence my search continues.

  • @anguswhite8233
    @anguswhite8233 2 роки тому +4

    That Monteverde is more of a black/black!: written with a lovely Estie:); definitely going to be buying the Colorverse blue/black 30ml and still to get that lovely Diamine 1864 ink; thanks for this:); ps still loving that Pilot 78g w Pilot blue/black: one of my favourites!:)

      Finally got round to buying Diamine 1864 blue/black: know it’ll be a good’n!; any chance of you doing a review of your Pilot 78g?(could watch you writing all day with that combo!:) - hoping you get back in the saddle at some point: we miss you!:)

      Have just bought Pelikan blue/black: is this an iron gall ink?: swab hasn’t got any darker and doesn’t say it’s ig on the label but it’s important to me as once I ink a pen, if I like the ink that pen will stay inked for a long time which is a disaster if it’s ig: help!, please:)

    • @anguswhite8233
      @anguswhite8233 2 роки тому +1

      Well the 1864 blue/ black is superb: thanks for this recommendation - think Diamine must add something to their inks: they write wet but the ink stays where it’s put, unlike some which spread out and turn a F into a B!:(

      This is my favourite vid!: know these inks vids are a lot of work, but I come back to them again and again: was wondering if you were intending to do any more?: in order of preference would love browns(part2), blue/greens(syo-ro may be my current favourite - another one I owe you!), purple/lilacs and, lastly, greys(fuyu-syogun is my only grey)

    Hello sir, For me you are a "Guru". Let it be fountain pen or an ink. I like almost all videos posted by you. In this video, we can see, so many samples of blue black ink. Very detailed analysis. Very helpful. You have discussed, 9 different brands of blue black ink. All look great. I would like to add one more name to your list. It's Daytone blue black ink. Very refreshing colour, more towards blueish!! ( I am saying so, after writing around fifty full pages using this ink!! ) 👍
