Johnny Harris is a popular UA-camr known for producing engaging mini-documentaries on his channel. I've watched quite a few of them.
Recently, he released a viral documentary titled "Why The Swiss Love Their Guns (More Than Americans)." While I found his claim hard to believe, I decided to give it a chance.
However, after watching this video, which is admittedly well-done, this documentary is just a thinly veiled, passive-aggressive hit piece against the Second Amendment in America masked as a documentary.
So, now I have to debunk it.

Hey man, I'm a Swiss who is an SF operator in the Swiss Army. I totally agree with you on this debunking.
    - We have a huge amount of guns in the country but no crimes because we respect the responsibility that goes with it.
    - The problem in America isn't the guns, but rather the education of certain people and that is what the government should be focusing on.
    - In Switzerland we are not a militia to protect the country but the people (which is a difference imo).
    - The government in Switzerland is not entitled to any legislative decision without the people's agreement. So yes if the government was to become tyrannic we wouldn't protect this government, we would protect the Swiss people.
The problem is never the gun, it's always the person behind the gun.

I used to know Johnny Harris. When he was still a member of LDS church we served together in the same mission (Tijuana, Mexico). After the mission, we were friends on Facebook, and he posted a question about banning guns to help bring down violence. He wanted responses from both sides. I gave him mine, which was basically it wouldn't matter. I pointed to the fact of Mexico where we served still had violence, and the fact regular citizens are not allowed to have guns. Basically, my argument was evil people will always find a way to kill. After that day he unfriended me and blocked me. I was surprised and this happened i think in 2013. I dont have Facebook anymore. Every time I see his videos on UA-cam, I remember when I use to work together, he is a good person and I have nothing against him. But after he blocked me for giving me opinion basically told me he is not willing to listen to both sides. And will shut down opposing opinions out. Ever since then when people show me his videos I tell them my story and why I wouldn't trust his content because he doesn't look at all point of views.

It's similar to a lot of ex-mormon personality changes when people leave the LDS faith. People are so invested that when they leave they often become vindictive toward the church and think they know more about everything else now that they figured out the church isn't true.
I grew up LDS and left, and I think that mindset is stupid. The documentary he posted isn't overtly anti gun, but it has that same holier-than-thou flavor that I see daily here in Utah from people that think they know everything now that they've "opened their minds" past religion.
It's just more talking and virtue signaling dogwhistles so he can feel like a journalist and social pariah for the people he's pandering to, nothing will ever change unless people start doing things instead of making B.S. art pieces to try and make other people change instead.

If we wish to buy our service rifle there are things we need yo complete before hand. In the US, any firearm that fires more than one round with a single action of the trigger is classified by law as a "machine gun" under the national firearms act of 1934.
What you are likely trying to do is equate the "belt fed machine gun" with the legal definition of "machine gun." Unfortunately almost all laws that pertain to guns in the US are written by those that don't understand them.

When something is used in a way that it was not designed for, you’re going to get the wrong results. Guns are dangerous weapons which are designed to KILL, or to cause serious injury, if you’re lucky enough. They aren’t designed for killing innocent people and school kids, and they aren’t designed for killing people in supermarkets, shopping malls and public places. But this is what happens in the US every single day.
The only people who should have access to guns are the military, special law enforcement and licenced individuals (eg. shooting clubs, farming/hunting). You can’t just have access to firearms for no valid reason. If people are given access to guns without a valid reason, the guns will be misused and people will get killed
In Switzerland, guns are being used for a valid reason - shooting competitions and hunting. That’s why they don’t have a gun violence problem. In the US, everyone has the right to own a gun, regardless of who they are, which is MADNESS!!! Like I said above, if something is used in a way that it was not designed for, you’re going to get the wrong results. That’s why thousands and thousands of people are killed by guns in the US every year, and it’s not meant to be that way
Lastly, let’s not forget that the US is the only country on earth where people literally have unfettered access to every kind of firearms you can imagine. To this day, many Americas still believe (crazily!) that owning a gun is the most effective way to protect themselves. Well, let’s look at this this for a moment. If arming everyone with a gun makes society a safer place, then America would be the safest country on earth. But it’s not. America isn’t even on the top ten list of safest countries. That tells you all you need to know.
What does every shooter have in common? They were all able to get a gun. So, access to guns leads to gun violence. The solution to gun violence? Ban them all. If nobody has a gun, then nobody can shoot. Problem solved.

What people sometimes forget, our gun laws are pretty strict.
Yes you get handed a gun when you serve in the military, but if you want to keep that gun you need a gun ownership permit which includes a background check.
You also don't get a carry permit unless you're a:
    - Hunter/Gamekeeper
    - Policeman
You're only allowed to use a gun on your own property (safety considerations!) or at a shooting range.
You're also not allowed to store ammo and guns in the same place, eg. keeping a loaded pistol in your drawer = no go.
Guns and ammo need to be stored "behind 2 locked doors".
As for defending yourself, yes you theoretically can use a gun but unless the other guy is armed as well you're going to jail. Shooting an unarmed person even in self defense gets you jail time.
In the end, you can't really compare Switzerland to the US, when it comes to poverty and social security Switzerland is leaps and bounds ahead of the US.
The trust in the government is also a lot higher here.
The issue in the US is though that fixing the socio-economic issues would mean voting for the guys that might "fix" your gun laws so you're stuck between a rock and a hard place.

You got that last part a bit incorrect there. The only way to "fix" our gun laws would be to repeal most of them so they don't infringe in the rights of law abiding citizens. Some of those who would actually do that are the same that would have no problem fixing many of the other issues. When the handouts stop they will get hungry and want shelter. They will either get a job, end up in prison (for the hopes of a free ride) where they should have a mandatory job to earn funds for their necessities, or get sh0t trying to steal.

@@nomadmarauder-dw9re I grew up and live in Zürich Switzerland and when I was in middleschool 44 out of 48 students in my class were either immigrants or children of immigrants, we only had 4 students with 2 swiss parents (including me) and all the students in our class combined could speak over 20 different languages, it was just a regular public school but al classes combined had students from Portugal, Italy, Germany, Albania, Bosnia, Serbia, Armenia, Croatia, Turkey, Sri-Lanka, India, Lebanon, Syria, Netherlands, Spain, dominican republic, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Nigeria, Taiwan, China, Vietnam, Kosovo, Macedonia, Russia, Romania, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kurdistan, Ghana etc etc so idk about the homogeneous part, in the countryside yes but most of the "bigger" cities (especially Geneva and Zürich) are melting pots of cultures and nationalities, for example yesterday I ate a Dürüm at the local Kebap joint and I heard at least 6 different languages being spoken at the tables around me in like 15-20 minutes.
Add to that the fact that Switzerland has 4 different national languages and over 20 different swiss german dialects within an area around the size of Maryland, I don't see Switzerland as all that homogeneous, if you mean that most Swiss citizens are of european descent you are right but is it really homogeneous when all those Europeans come from different countries with different cultures speaking different languages ?
For example I can drive to Italy in less than 3 hours and their mentality, language and culture is completely different from Swiss people even though we are neighbours we couldn't be any more different, japanese or american people are closer to Swiss people than Italians in terms of mentality and culture so just because we're both european countries with mostly european populations ethnically speaking (even though Italian ethnicity is only partly European) doesn't mean we're similar in the slightest and that goes for all of Europe. That's why it's weird when I hear Switzerland referred to as a homogeneous population because it's only somewhat homogeneous in terms of ethnicity but not at all in terms of language/culture, alot of americas seem to think that "mostly white population = homogeneous population" because that makes sense in the US where all the white people speak the same language and grow up with more or less the same culture but it doesn't make sense when those white people all speak different languages, have different mentalies and can't even relate to each other at all. If a russian, a Scott, a spaniard and a swiss person are in the same room would you say it's a homogeneous room just because they're all white europeans ? Even though they have nothing else in common with each other ?
And what do you mean by police state ? The police force here is pretty small and mostly unarmed, only like 0,3% of the national BIP goes to the military and I've never experienced a shortage of freedoms or police brutality of any kind, I didn't feel any more free during my time in Providence, Rhode Island.
It's also not that hard to get into Switzerland, for example my brother works as a teacher at a refugee camp and there's like 8 year old children who fled their home country (sometimes on a different continent) alone or with their siblings without their parents knowledge and even they get in, or at least most of them. Literal pre-schoolers get in without even speaking a word english, french or german. I do think Switzerland is somewhat strict with poor refugees from outside Europe but compared to alot of other European countries it's pretty open.

People can use tools to harm people, just as you can use a knife or even a shovel to kill people. If the only people who have access to guns are military and law enforcement then they can just mess around with you and you can't do anything just like in dystopian societies, how are you going to stop a man with a gun violating your rights if you don't have one? People misuse guns because they are uneducated or they are criminals who obtain them illegally anyways. Switzerland doesn't have a gun problem like us because for the most part they have a good economy and one of the highest living standards in Europe, so people don't have a reason to form gangs or deal drugs. And no we don't have access to every kind of firearm you can imagine. Automatic weapons are borderline impossible to buy in the United States unless you go through an extremely lengthy process in certain states to obtain a permit to buy one, and buying one will cost you well over $10,000-$15,000 since you can only buy one manufactured before 1986, making it impossible for most average people. We aren't on the top ten list of safest countries because of inner city violence and gang warfare. You can literally live in Chicago in peace but if you go to the wrong part of town you will live in risk of dying to gang violence (or as you call it for political reasons gun violence). Banning all guns has the same effect as banning drugs like marijuana has had. People still sold it people still had access to it. People still have access to other drugs like cocaine or meth, but they're banned. OH! And once again who deals marijuana and coke and meth?? Gangs, same groups responsible for gun violence.
Maybe if you took a trip to St. Louis or even New York where I've seen gang violence or any city where there is economic depravity and gang warfare you would realize what's the problem. This idea you keep spreading is because you never have taken a step into what the real world is. People in these places are fighting for their lives on the daily, and instead of trying to help people who are in poverty and struggling we squabble over what restrictions to put on law abiding citizens with guns. Great job we're doing in this country.

It’s portrayed as if we all go to the shooting competition at the beginning… I never heard of it before, it’s kind of a niche hobby really. The part on swiss history looks like he romanticised an already romanticised version of swiss history he found somewhere online. In fact, notice the lack of sources everywhere ? The only “sources” are the randoms he interviews. It’s like all the budget went on the plane tickets and fun animations, none left for research.

I thought the Rittenhouse incident was particularly interesting. The local government/law enforcement seemed to be failing at protecting private property. A group of armed people (including Rittenhouse) came together to protect a business (the guns were to protect themselves when their lives were threatened while protecting the business). Not that different than armed security guards, but unpaid. People ask why did Rittenhouse have a gun? It was the entire constitutional right of the people involved to protect their property by forming an armed militia. The failure of the local government to do this for the people made the 2nd amendment all the more necessary. It wasn’t just Rittenhouse on trial, it was the 2nd amendment.

I am a Swiss citizen who has served in the military and also own a gun. He represents our gun culture very well but we do also have people (although they are very rare) who go out into the woods and shoot random shit often with guns that aren’t even legal Tommy guns for example. Nevertheless we still have much much fewer gun related crimes. I personally think this is due to the fact that 95% of gun owners received proper firearms training in the military and that we have generally much lower crime rates, fewer Drug problems and no gangs. One more point that comes to mind is that it is very very hard to receive a license to carry weapons in Switzerland. Only law enforcement, active military personnel and some extremely rare cases of civil individuals that are at a high risk of personal safety are allowed to carry firearms. I do not understand why you need to be allowed to go shopping with a gun on you.

You are absolutely right about the shooting range/competition: There's no difference in the states compared with Switzerland or Germany. If you like to do this in your free time, go for it. In Germany it's even one of the few reasons you are allowed to buy a gun ("Schützenverein").
What's more strange in the states is the "everyday access" to guns, i.e.: Spontaneously buy an AR-15 at Walmart, leave them somewhere open in your house for easy access or even open carry in public. I would be kind of afraid walking through a city where every 2nd person is (or could) carry a gun.
I know one friend, who has a gun for the shooting range. Everyone else is like "No, I don't own a gun, why should i?!". That's also a key difference: Here you own a gun, cause you have a real verifiable use-case (hunting, sports, police,..) and use it responsibly, whereas in the states nearly everyone (good or bad intentions) can buy one.
    Just my two cents.🤷🏽‍♂️

@SH1974 You confuse Gun Safety with Gun Control.
      Gun Safety is very simple.
We were taught two word Gun Safety in my house growing up.
      "Gun's Loaded"
That means muzzle down, finger out of the trigger guard and safety on.
ALWAYS treat a gun as such and you will NEVER have an accident.
"Gun Control" is when evil people want to disarm you because of what they've done to you and they fear you may retaliate with lethal force.
"SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED" There is a reason this verbiage was used in the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution.
A good case of Gun Safety failure would be Alec Baldwin's Negligent Homicide of Halyna Hutchins. (Remember her? I do!)
And of course, because he's a star, no repercussions.
So, please don't tell me "No". I understand fully what these words define.
      Have a Merry Christmas.
P.S., Halyna's husband and children, won't be celebrating with her this year, not because of lack of Gun Control, but because of lack of Gun Safety.

A small correction: The shooting competition wasn‘t long range, or at least isn‘t considered long range in Switzerland. It is on a distance of 300 meters, which is the basic rifle qualification range for Swiss soldiers. Every service member has to qualify annually on 300m (or 25m for higher NCOs and officers, since their personal weapon is a pistol).
Just some nice to know things about those competitions/ qualifications: Each 300m range (partially funded by the defense department) will host several competitions over the summer where you can just walk into the building, grab the necessary ammo and shoot your qualification. If you fail to do your qualifications you will be fined (iirc first time will be about 200$, second time 400$ and then it will gradually rise).
So a lot of people are going to the range because they are legally obligated to do so.

      2. Your houses are made of cardboard. Shooting at the intruder sounds fun, but not for the neighbour getting hit. Self defence with a weapon when a life is threatened is understandable. Problem, very often the gun can cause the unsafe situation. Or the shooting is absolutely not justified...
      3. Americans tend to believe that they are all Rambo, able to do whatever with a weapon because they saw it online. Even cops trained for school shooting cases didn't dare to enter Uvalde's school because of the AR-15.
Unless one is trained, a weapon is a very dangerous tool.
      4. Switzerland sees guns as a defense against external threats. Self defence isn't the role for guns. That's the job of the police. Why is there less violence? Because there is less poverty in most of developed countries than in the US: And the countries that are getting poverty issues start to have violence.
If the US wants to be a safer place, there are major mentality shifts to have. No guns are not THE solution against violence.

My girlfriend was hit by a motorist using commercial insurance, that company denied the claim because the vehicle was private use, my gf has uninsured motorist coverage...still cost her a grand. I’m from Switzerland and I’m not writing here to criticize Americans and how you handle your guns but I’d like to give some added information about the way it is in Switzerland because there may be some misunderstandings regarding that.
    1. Obviously not everyone owns a Gun in Switzerland only certified gun holders which have to obtain a license or guys and girls that go to the army. which is a small percentage of the overall population since a lot of people simply don’t want to go to the army or they are not capable either physically or mentally.
    2. Everybody that is in the army receives either the SIG 550 assault rifle or a Glock 17 depending on which department you’re in. But when you take them home from the army that doesn’t give you the right of owning ammunition unless you have the license for it which you have to acquire separately and has nothing to do with you being in the army.
    3. The guns at home have to be stored unloaded and the guns breech has to be stored separately so that even if there’s ammo at home accidents can be avoided. Sadly every few years some people don’t follow that rule and deadly accidents happen.
Ammo for people serving in the army would be provided after being drafted in a case on an invasion you’re not supposed to have ammo at home to be ready instantly.
    4. Using the gun for self defense in a life threatening situation is theoretically allowed in the same way you’re allowed to use a knife for example. But since the gun is missing the breech and ammo it’s not really a good way to defend yourself and you could still get in trouble for owning ammo without the right to do so.
    5. You’re not allowed to carry a gun in public. If you go to the shooting range the gun as well as all the mags must be unloaded and ammo has to be transported separately from the gun. Also you need to take the direct way to the shooting range if you’re stopping by a supermarket and you would get into a random police control you would get in trouble.
With that being said I have literally no idea how exactly the situation in America is regarding regulations, storage of guns/ammo etc. so I’m not gonna compare anything I just wanted to give some extra information.

    • @stangiles
      @stangiles 4 місяці тому

Sorry, but most of your comment is fudd lore.
      1. There's no such thing as a "certified gun holder" anywhere in the Swiss gun law. Everybody who's eligible per Article 8 WG can buy a gun. Military service doesn't even appear anywhere in the law. There's also no such thing as a "license" when it comes to acquiring a firearm. And if the difference between a permit (WES, ABK, SON) and a license eludes you, you probably shouldn't be educating people on Swiss firearms regulations.
      2. P220 in this context actually but that's hardly important. The acquisition of ammo isn't tied a "license" or any other condition other than those required to buy a gun itself (see Article 15 WG).
      3. Only for full-autos (including the ones converted to semi-auto) does the bolt carrier group have to be removed. Literally every other type of firearm doesn't require that. Buying ammo as an individual isn't affected by whatever the army deems "suitable" for its soldiers.
      4. Again, the requirements to buy ammo are the same as to buy a gun. If you legally own a gun, you're automatically legally allowed to buy ammo (minus the ones mentioned in Article 26 and 27 WV of course). It's that simple.
      5. That depends. Stopping by a supermarket is fine as long as it's on your direct route.

    • @calledyannis
      @calledyannis 4 місяці тому

Thanks for your comment let me clarify a few things
      1. You’re right I used the word license but I’ve meant the weapons acquisition certificate WES. The reason for that is simply because English isn’t my mother language and I used the wrong term. Yes there are differences between a license and the WES but in that context what I tried to say is you need the WES before you can buy a firearm you cannot do it without it. And yes exactly the army isn’t mentioned because regarding the army weapon you keep there are different rules that apply because it’s not in the WG.
2.P220 is only for lieutenants and some infantry soldiers get them as well although I don’t think that the soldiers take that gun home while the lieutenants do. The soldiers usually only take home the SIG 550. Glock 17 is for military police only. But yes that doesn’t really matter to much in that context. Yes buying ammo is only tied to the WES which you need to have and that’s what I initially meant is that just because you get a gun from the army you’re not allowed to buy ammo for it if you don’t have a WES. And a lot of people don’t have that even though they have the army weapon at home.
      3. Privately yes but again regarding the army weapon different rules apply. And again yes buying ammo as an individual doesn’t have anything to do with the army. My point was that a lot of people think we get a gun in the army and some ammo and then take it home when that is not the case.
      4. Again yes you’re right I did clarify above already.
      5. Also true should have been more clear about going anywhere that isn’t on the direct route.
My comment was mostly regarding the army weapon not private acquisitions.
Because in the video he reacts to it’s heavily focused about the army weapons where different rules apply so I wanted to give some extra information about that.

      1. To be fair to you, there are many people who don't think that the WES is a permit because it isn't explicitly called "Bewilligung" (to me, it's obvious that it is a permit). So this topic of license/permit/other isn't even all that obvious even in the official languages. Nevertheless, there are many guns that don't require a WES, for example a K31. (Article 19 WV).
      2. That's what I'm trying to tell you. The WES is not required to buy ammo as an individual. In order to buy ammo, you only need to be qualified to buy a gun (that's exactly what Article 15 WG says). A WES is one way to show that to a seller, but it's not required. You can also provide a copy of your criminal records (not older than 2 months) or a hunting pass or equivalent.
      3. True.
My problem with this video is that he acts like there's basically only the SAT as a source for civilian gun ownership and nothing else.

I see. I’m glad you added that information thanks for sharing I definitely learned something.
I honestly wasn’t to deep into the ammo and gun acquisition process because I’m an example of: I have a Glock 17 at home from the army but never went and bought other guns or ammo and also didn’t obtain the WES or anything.
Therefore I wanted to show that there’s also people like me that own a gun but never use it outside the army which raises the density of firearms per capita. That’s why some people might get mislead by statistics.
I also agree on you last point.
