Yes, great point! I should have mentioned that in the video. Using good (or bad) voice leading can definitely affect the way the other instruments sound.
This is a wonderful lesson. The way you played voice lead lines with a rhythm keeps it musical instead of just stagnant note playing. I love that! It's so important to make everything we do musical. Even practice.
Scott, great stuff. I play alto, soprano and bari and have never had much trouble transitioning. I'm told tenor is a different animal, but have never seem anyone talk about specific differences. Love to see vid on doubling between alto & tenor.
Great lesson, and starting with a one ton (per bar) solo is also a good point to start for me as an improv beginner. I play tenor and sopran, but think it does not matter which instrument you are playing. You can lern it either way
Hey Horst, if you're new to improv and want a step by step guide to figuring it out, you should check out my sax school. You'll learn in 2 months what would take you a year or more on UA-cam.
Excellent information and easy to understand, I’ve really learnt a lot here and will take it away and have a practice, thanks Scott and loved hearing the Tenor
I never knew that the voice leading notes didn't have to be right next to each other - that's quite an eye-opener. What about changing the main note over the duration of a chord? So that, for example, we voice lead with the C over the Dm7 and to the B on the G7, but then switch to the G for the second half of the G7 and voice lead to the G# on the AMaj7?
Yeah, you could do that. The main thing is moving smoothly from one chord to the next, and you can literally do anything as long as you make it sound good. But a really good starting point is to try and find that single line between a set of 4 or more chords. Once you get that under your fingers really well, your ears will take care of the rest. As far as the notes being next to each other. Songs like Straight No Chaser & Tenor Madness are perfect examples.
I would need to practice the bari a lot more to do a tutorial on it. I can play what I need to on it, but it isn't the first or second horn I usually pick up.... mainly due to neck problems.
Excellent lesson. Interesting that it's not just about what the sax sounds like, the tones chosen affect the way the piano comes across too.

I'm an old sax honker and tenor is my favorite. Keep up the great job. I've been playing for over 60 years and still learn from you.
Man…. Your tenor sound is just fantastic!
