When Shanks at the beginning of the series said that they stole the Gomu-Gomu no mi from “an enemy ship” I assumed that the ship was a pirate’s. Wow, so what if one of the things that made Shanks a world renowned Yonko was that he stopped this heavily watched ship and stole the World Government’s prized Devil Fruit (that could’ve been used for sinister stuff down the line but couldn’t do so).
If thats the case, then WG won't have to jail who's who for 12 years and strip him out of CP9. He was even more important because he was direct match for Rob Lucci at that time. So I dont think it was shanks who stole the DF from who's who. Instead I think Shanks stole it from BB!
Joyboy had the Gomu Gomu. Im-sama searched for this fruit for 800 years, then Shanks stole it because Roger told him it was Joyboy's power written in Laugh Tale. Now the new Joyboy ate the same fruit and will defeat Im-sama. Im didn't think someone as strong as Shanks would be in the East Blue to steal as it's the weakest sea, he thought CP9 was enough for safety.

He even said he made the gears because he needed power, I could maybe see a muscle balloon from someone in the past but that's it, everyone would've used it different. The story literally shows that this is a trade off basically luffy would reach these levels of strength after decades of training but he gets them now in exchange to die young

I could see them trying to stockpile them for the army. They do offer newly promoted Marines of certain ranks Devil Fruit. So it would make sense thru have them on hand Could also just be the case that Devil Fruit inherently make someone more dangerous (most of the time - jacket fruit lol), so stashing away as many as you can find, means there are fewer fruit in circulation for pirates to use against you.

If Shanks knew that the gomu gomu no mi was really special and specifically decided to steal it, why in the world would he just leave it unattended, out in the open at the bar, for a 7 year old boy to just take it and eat it? It was Impel down. Who's who was one of the prisoners in Level 6 and probably escaped during Blackbeard coup. There were other prisoners from Level 6 that ran away. He said when he saw Luffy in impel down with the fruit he lost he was surprised. Also he knows Jimbie from Impel down
I think the gomu gomu no mi being a special devil fruit is unexpected but knowing Oda, I would not be surprised if he planned this from the beginning. Great chapter other than we didn’t get an update on the Yamato vs Kaido fight so that was annoying. Amazing review as always Sawyer.

I believe your opinion on what happened makes sense in broad strokes. Only difference I have is that Shanks knew the importance of the gum gum fruit being linked to joy boy because of his time with Roger. Then due to his connections with the world government, Shanks knew when they were transporting it. Black beard also knew somehow and he and Shanks ended up fighting over the fruit. The fight came to a stalemate. Shortly after Shanks and the crew went back to the village to recoup and celebrate another successful voyage which is then where our story of One Piece truly began. Great content as usual!
I find it funny how Vergo was able to push Sanji so far back and break his leg but here Sanji pushed a second Yonko commander to his hybrid form. Makes me wonder just how strong Vergo was.

Here's a fun theory I read: Rocks originally had the Goro Goro no mi and after the WG saw just how OP the fruit was in the wrong hands they tried to find a devil fruit that could counter the Goro Goro no mi if it ever became a threat again in the future. Then they found the Gomu Gomu no mi but Shanks stole it.

For someone that doesn't speak Japanese, Sawyer's pronunciation of a lot of Japanese terms is pretty on point. He is pronouncing rokuougan incorrectly though. He's adding a "y" where there isn't one. It's Roku (6) Ou (King) Gan (Gun/Pistol). It doesn't really bother me but if he happens to see this maybe he will appreciate the correction. Great chapter and always great insight from Sawyer. Maybe only a select group of people know about how special that is (maybe only Im and Gorosei guys) they somehow get the fruit and it was supposed to get transported to Marygeoise in full secret to somehow thwart Joy Boy's plan. To get this done they assigned this mission to their most powerful (at the time) CP9 agent without telling him how important that fruit was, only that he wasn't under any circunstance supposed to fail the mission and he still failed...

I always just assumed it was referencing how often they "respawn" or where. If it's a less rare fruit it could simply respawn right at the nearest fruit but if it was more rare then it would maybe have more strict requirements as to where or when it comes back. However that's mostly my head cannon and the most straightforward and most likely answer is its simply referring to the strength of a fruit. Logia are powerful in just about anyone's hands, so a fruit that strong is rare based on strength in comparison to the potential of other fruits. Hopefully that made sense 🤷🏽♂️

The world government and Shanks love fruits that increase survivability. The ope ope no mi (immortality), the fruit of Buggy (cannot be pierced), gomu gomu no mi (immune to thunder) ... Being immune to thunder is what makes Luffy and his fruit special from a long time ago, specially vs Enel and even vs Buggy when Buggy was fried from the lightning and Luffy just got up like it was nothing.

I honestly don't like this twist. Feels too contrived. Is the Gomu Gomu really supposed to be that "special"? Is it being rubber supposed to be on tier with other DFs like the Yami-Yami and Ope-Ope? And if it was so important, then the WG should have been on Luffy's ass from the start of the series.
Perhaps the special nature of Luffy's fruit has been hiding in plain sight this entire time because in Romance Dawn the original version of OP it was said that the gum-gum fruit grows once every 50 years and on a tree because Luffy's fruit is unique as it is the only devil fruit that can be planted and sprout a devil fruit tree and that the original devil fruit tree was destroyed in the void century in the ancient kingdom. The seeds are taken by the giants whom replanted the tree on Elbaf as the world tree from Norse Myth and IM had cut of a root of the tree and then became the tree in Mariejois but unlike the devil fruit tree on Elbaf which constantly grows devil fruits overtime the devil fruit tree in Mariejois has withered requiring the need the brokerage system for purchasing devil fruits so when IM knew it was 50 years that the gum-gum fruit has returned in circulation IM wants it to regrow a tree and have the W.G as the sole controller of devil fruits and the user of the gum-gum fruit can recind the devil fruit tree which Luffy will do in the Final War rendering the world of OP without superpowers in the form of devil fruits. Also I believe that Admiral Green Bull acts as failsafe with the withering tree with Green Bull using his plant themed devil fruit powers to refresh the tree for the interim allowing W.G operatives/Marines to have quick access to fruits for the time being till IM or somebody kills Luffy so they can grow a new devil fruit tree.

His opponent Queen also uses technological upgrades, so there is no reason not to use the suit

Think about this for a second. If Shanks knew that the gomu gomu no mi was really special and specifically decided to steal it, why in the world would he just leave it unattended, out in the open at the bar, for a 7 year old boy to just take it and eat it? Wouldn't he keep it in a vault inside of his ship? So, I like to think that Shanks had no idea how special the fruit was. They just stole it because they were attacked by the Marines.

I believe your opinion on what happened makes sense in broad strokes. Only difference I have is that Shanks knew the importance of the gum gum fruit being linked to joy boy because of his time with Roger. Then due to his connections with the world government, Shanks knew when they were transporting it. Black beard also knew somehow and he and Shanks ended up fighting over the fruit. The fight came to a stalemate. Shortly after Shanks and the crew went back to the village to recoup and celebrate another successful voyage which is then where our story of One Piece truly began. Great content as usual!

I find it funny how Vergo was able to push Sanji so far back and break his leg but here Sanji pushed a second Yonko commander to his hybrid form. Makes me wonder just how strong Vergo was.

Shanks already had a scar when he formed the red hair pirates. You can see it on his Jolly Roger. And they got the gomu gomu no mi after they were a pirate crew. It was lucky roo who got it. So Shanks faced Blackbeard before he was a captain.

For someone that doesn't speak Japanese, Sawyer's pronunciation of a lot of Japanese terms is pretty on point. He is pronouncing rokuougan incorrectly though. He's adding a "y" where there isn't one. It's Roku (6) Ou (King) Gan (Gun/Pistol). It doesn't really bother me but if he happens to see this maybe he will appreciate the correction.

I always just assumed it was referencing how often they "respawn" or where. If it's a less rare fruit it could simply respawn right at the nearest fruit but if it was more rare then it would maybe have more strict requirements as to where or when it comes back.
However that's mostly my head cannon and the most straightforward and most likely answer is its simply referring to the strength of a fruit. Logia are powerful in just about anyone's hands, so a fruit that strong is rare based on strength in comparison to the potential of other fruits.

Being immune to thunder is what makes Luffy and his fruit special from a long time ago, specially vs Enel and even vs Buggy when Buggy was fried from the lightning and Luffy just got up like it was nothing.

I honestly don't like this twist. Feels too contrived. Is the Gomu Gomu really supposed to be that "special"? Is it being rubber supposed to be on tier with other DFs like the Yami-Yami and Ope-Ope? And if it was so important, then the WG should have been on Luffy's ass from the start of the series.
Oda just trying to add more bullshit to the story, to extend it as long as possible.

Perhaps the special nature of Luffy's fruit has been hiding in plain
sight this entire time because in Romance Dawn the original version of
OP it was said that the gum-gum fruit grows once every 50 years and on a
tree because Luffy's fruit is unique as it is the only devil fruit that
can be planted and sprout a devil fruit tree and that the original
devil fruit tree was destroyed in the void century in the ancient
kingdom. The seeds are taken by the giants whom replanted the tree on
Elbaf as the world tree from Norse Myth and IM had cut of a root of the
tree and then became the tree in Mariejois but unlike the devil fruit
tree on Elbaf which constantly grows devil fruits overtime the devil
fruit tree in Mariejois has withered requiring the need the brokerage
system for purchasing devil fruits so when IM knew it was 50 years that
the gum-gum fruit has returned in circulation IM wants it to regrow a
tree and have the W.G as the sole controller of devil fruits and the
user of the gum-gum fruit can recind the devil fruit tree which Luffy
will do in the Final War rendering the world of OP without superpowers
in the form of devil fruits.
Also I believe that Admiral Green Bull acts as failsafe with the withering tree with Green Bull using his plant themed devil fruit powers to refresh the tree for the interim allowing W.G operatives/Marines to have quick access to fruits for the time being till IM or somebody kills Luffy so they can grow a new devil fruit tree.
