Fly Fishing a Stunning River for Wild Trout
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 лис 2022
- Fly fishing takes me to some amazing rivers in pursuit of wild trout and this is one of my favourites. Pawel joined me for this two-day fly-fishing trip into the backcountry. We arrived very optimistic. Our last trip to this river, now almost a year ago, was very successful with plenty of really great wild rainbow trout landed.

Great fishing trip Johan and nice footage, tight lines and thumbs up,, Tony.
Thanks Tony, much appreciated
Great video fishing . Good luck❤
Thank you very much. Tight lines
Just amazing !!!!
Thank you so much
Great work mate…and double thanks for the production quality! Brilliant!
Thanks Anthony, glad you enjoyed it. It's such a stunning place.
What a beautiful river! You are so lucky to have such a place to fish--even if fishing is challenging.
Absolutely, it's a magical place and we haven't even explored half of it yet. There are a bunch of tributaries we are yet to explore.
good video nice fish great location
Thanks Steven
Absolutely love the drone footage
Thanks Steve, I love getting it too really adds to the sense of being there and knowing what the landscape is like. Wish I could do more but the places I can fly are a bit limited. Lots of rules which make things tough.
Beautiful video, looks like an incredible trip!
Thank you very much. We really enjoyed it. Day 2 coming soon.
Another great video man! Such stunning locations
Thanks a heap. Just wish it would show in the analytics! Maybe the next one ay. Hope your going well.
That is awesome! At 7:15 you can see the fish dart after/take the fly! Great overhead view!!!
Its great to hear you enjoyed. I love aerials views too and it's great when the fish are visible too. Tight lines.
Miss this water... long drive these days... Funny that wee trib @2min... always had a cast, empty... And you pricked one straight away! sweet video Johan
Thanks Jeff. I love this place. So many kms of water. Funny it's the first time I decided to have a cast in that trip. Tough drift though. Some more tribs we looked at to explore next time too.
Cheers for providing me with in flight entertainment. Nice fish, just trying to figure where you are 😆
Excellent hope its worth entertainment. Look east...
Wow that part where you had Pawel swing the fly was awesome, your rivers are so clear you can see all the fish holding and chasing.
The rivers here are incredible, the South Island ones are especially gin clear.
absolute ripper video!
Awesome to hear, thanks so much
Nice fishing Johan. Beautiful river. Great to see you and Pawel out together again. That fish you lost around the 6.13 min mark. You more less called it with too much line to manage. My thoughts I saw was that you were reeling the line in while still early on in the fight. I've found that to bite ya more often than not. I keep stripping to keep close connection and control of the fish first and reel in on the slower section of the water when the fish is slowing up too. Great video and well done with your progress on your channel, over 30k subscribers. Your channel has shot out of the blocks over the last 12 months. I think the last time I looked at that it was around 3k or less. Good on you.
Thanks mate much appreciated. Agree I should have waited with reeling in. I also think I didn't get a good set with all the slack from the big mend. Was happy to hook it from a tough spot though.
@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Yeah it can often be a 'bob' each way in runs like that with a tricky drift to keeping your line tight from the hook set onwards. But yeah stripping the line in quick early on helps with the hook set too as it eliminates any vulnerable slack that may be present from the outset and just keeps that hook firmly gripped on the end of the fish's mouth, where ever that may be. It's all part of the experience at the end of the day. But a hook up is still great fun all the same. Keep up the great work Johan.
Well done on the fish mate. Have noticed that the numbers have dropped this season from the thrashing it got from the floods in October. I think fish and game did a drift and said the numbers were very low! So all considering you’ve done well.
The fucking floods aye man it’s bloody annoying heaps of my favorite spots has been so empty bloody no good at all
Thanks mate. It was noticeable that the fish size and numbers were down. Didn't know if it was just this time of year. We found more fish the next day in the trib down the road. Better fish too but still not like last year. Didn't think of the floods. Hopefully they will recover soon. Still a great river.
@@indecisive2690 yeah bro it was bad! It seems this rivers been mostly effected by them compared to others in the region
Not good to hear. Hope they don't take too long to recover.
Steelehead on the Deschutes in Oregon, I had a guide spot and direct me right across the fish. What a thrill.
That is awesome!
A great video Johan, we all have trips that take some working out or going home skunked, you have beaten me to a first dry fly eat for the season, Love the storey line if you could include more banter when you have got Pawel along. But an excellent video, well worth the watch
Thanks Neil, very much appreciated. I'll definitely try to include more banter next time. The 2am start and slow day kindof broke both of us a bit 🤣. Hope you get your first dry fly trout soon.
Nice fishing
Thank you 😊
The storytelling in in your vids is coming into another element man :) awesome stuff !
It's something I'm working hard on. Just want to keep making the vids as good as I can.
@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing And you definitely are! The work definitely doesn't go unnoticed :)
It's interesting what WhakaTrout said, actually we didn't think about that possibility. Anyway, Johan I see that your channel grows nicely, it's a fully deserved prize for all the efforts your dedication, well done mate 👍 Great video too!!!
Thanks Pawel, much appreciated. I also didn't think about the floods at all but I'm keen to go back again in Jan and go see what the headwaters are like. One day's fishing isn't really a good measurement but the drift dive data will be interesting to find and look at. I will email then and see if I can get the data.
Hi Johan, I feel for you, some days the river is just so different yet looks the same. We had our first day on the Tongariro today, river running high, fast and looks like mud. Hooked into three on the swing and two on the nymph. Lost them all, just a normal day on the river. Cheers mate. Harera
Good effort getting a few in the mud. It's not scenic fishing but always rewarding to get fish when it's tough. Hope they stay connected tomorrow. Enjoy your trip and tight lines.
looks like you can cast okay Johan at 8.10 haha... good work as usual
Thanks Chris, that's always nice to hear. Need to catch up for a fish again some time
@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing We absolutely should. Flick me a text if you are heading anywhere near here. Normally I would have had a raft trip or 2 by now, but it doesn't stop bloody raining! Also, being self employed again has proved to be pretty busy.
@@AboveWorryLevelFlyFishing Yeah the rain has cancelled a fair few days of fishing for me this season. I hope you'll get your raft trip soon.
Pięknie!!!!!! 🎣🎣🎣🎣
Thank you

What's the red fly line?
It's the running line of the Airflo superflo ridge 2.0. They have two different running line colours. I have this on my 6wt for nymphing and the more camo one on my 5wt.
WOW WHAT A BEAUTIFUL PLACE, PSALM 37:9-11 PLEASE READ!!!!!
Which line do U use @ 08.20min ...?
Airflo Superflo ridge 2.0 universal taper
🇸🇦👍🏼😎
Thanks 😊🎣
Hi bro, where are you from, I'm from Indonesia
New Zealand
Oke bro i like this video
You seem to always crank the reel when trying to get the fish on the reel. Why not spin the reel with your palm? It retrieves the slack much faster.
It might be his reel. Some reels don't spin freely. I spin mine if it does spin freely, works really well.
Where is this?
