For my Nikon 35mm SLR, I used fast 20/35/85mm lenses. The 35 and the 85 were f/1.4 but the 20 was only f/3.5. When I purchased my Leica M6, I decided to use fast 21/35/90mm lenses. Based on my experience with my 20mm f/3.5 Nikkor, I knew I would not be satisfied with a slow version of the Leitz 21mm. Therefore, I purchased the much faster f/1.4 version and have been very satisfied with its performance.
Thanks so much for your comparison of the Summilux and the Elmarit. I have often wondered how they compared.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I think my favourite lens combo is also 21/35/90mm, faster the better.

I used to sell camera equipment. I always ask people why would you need 1.4 or 2.8 in some wide angles. I mean most times you have huge depth of field anyways or shooting landscape or groups with them. Seems like you are paying more for something you’d use less for and carrying more weight. Especially since as you’ve said your shutter speed is going to be below 1/30 of a second and with digital cameras being so much better in low light nowadays

Yes, I agree, I guess I'll will now be challenged to find a creative situation where the f1.4 is clearly justified. No doubt I will make another video when I find it.

Great to know my old 21elm 2.8 holds it's own wide to stopped down vs the Lux. Thx!

    Hi,
at same F - stop, can I safely assume.....
Summilux lens > Summicron lens > Elmarit ASPH lens
😉 Thanks for your advice, guru!

At the same f-stop, lens become smaller from Summilux to Elmarit. At f2.8 and higher f-stops to f16, it’s hard to tell the lenses apart.

@@Adventure8 words of wisdom! Thanks so much!
      I m considering buying a used
Voigtländer Nokton 40mm 1.4 to be used on my uncle's old leica T.
Do u think they are a good match? I know leica T is not ideal, a M series would be... But I m just starting to leica.
      Must slowly build up. 8-)❤️

Great video, glad you found out the difference in field of view between both lenses. Did you use the E60 version of the pre-ASPH Elmarit lens? Because two Elmarit pre-ASPH versions exist.

Thanks for watching. I haven't used the pre-Asph Elmarit E60 version. Ken Rockwell has a good review and comparison of Leica lenses, including the 21mm versions. Here is the link to his website:www.kenrockwell.com/leica/21mm-lenses.htm

@@Adventure8 I am already well aware of this review! It made me going for the pre-ASPH version (I actually have pre-ASPH versions of 28 and 35 mm Leica M-lenses which I love both on digital and film).

I used to have the 21mm pre ASPH and I never liked its corner performance.
The 21mm super elmar is almost perfect but slow…

and regarding your tri-elmar 16, 18, 21 mm / what are the differences ? which one would you choose ?

Good question. Having all 3 lenses creates a challenge for me. The 21mm f2.8 is great value for money (Leica brand wise) for street photography. The 21mm f1.4, (if you have the budget) night skies, portraiture. Tri-Elmar 16-18-21 landscape, architecture.

Is the elmarit really wider? Or is it that the front element of the Summilux is 20mm farther than the Elmarit? I am not an optical engineer, but that seems like it would account for it.

Yes, the Elmarit produces a wider image than the Summilux. Both officially labeled as 21mm, but there is a noticeable difference as per my video. It's not unusual. I've noticed similar across my range of Nikkor lenses also.

If the sensor location wasn’t moved, the results shown here suggest that the Summilux and Elmarit lenses don’t have the same focal length.

21mm would be great for astrophotography. How is the coma on each lens wide open. Would love the 21 1.4 mounted on an sl2-s for Astro, if coma is minimal.

Thanks for watching. I will have to get out and do some night skies work with both lens on my M10-R. I'll do a video update when this is done.
