  • At the IPMS National Conventions in Phoenix, Arizona in 2018 and in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 2019, world famous scale modeler Mike Ashey gave several power point seminars on scale modeling. Mike has now begun converting these Power Point presentations into video tutorials. The first tutorial is on ship assembly techniques and it is in two parts. The information and techniques that Mike presents in part-1 of ship assembly techniques will help you build better ship models and the tutorial will improve your scale modeling skills.
So sit back and enjoy part-1 on ship assembly techniques and start building ship models the Mike Ashey way!

Thank you for making these videos! Moving on to part 2. I have never built a ship model and haven't built a scale model in decades, but am wanting to build the USCGC Taney for my sons. Such an overwhelming project. The only thing I've seen about the Taney is that the rails are terrible and should be replaced with photo etched rails...I have no concept yet of how to remove the plastic rails that are molded onto it without ruining the model...

The old Revell Arizona kit also has molded on railings just like their Taney kit.
Send me you email address and I will send you some pictures of how I removed them.

I have a question not necessarily related to this great video. I need to learn the “conversion” from European scales and U.S. scales. Specifically, I am looking at building a model of a building that is available in scales from 6mm to 28mm. If I want to use model Ww2 soldiers, what scale building should I get.

Hello Mike, I have read your books and love the videos. I had a quick question regarding a resin kit. How would you fill a sink hole on the deck? It's an old resin Arizona kit with fine deck plank scribing. Would I fill with CA glue, sand, and try to re-scribe? Wasn't sure if I should use CA glue or putty. Thanks!

      Hi Eric
Is it the 1/350 scale resin kit of the Arizona?
Filling imperfections and holes from air pockets in resin kits can be tricky.
You may want to try covering the deck with one of the wood deck sheets made for the Trumpeter/Banner Arizona in the same scale.
I recommend getting the trumpeter/banner 1/350 scale Arizona and the Gold Medal Models photoetch set.
If you go to my website you can see the pictures of my Arizona and my conversion to a late war Pennsylvania
      Mike

Mike, yes it is an old 1/350 Tom's Modelworks Arizona resin kit. Unfortunately, the deck has one large sinkhole and several smudges with air bubbles. I almost bought the Trumpeter kit but went with resin instead. I may just go back and buy the Trumpeter kit now and upgrade it. Thanks for the reply!

I did a build article for the trumpeter kit for FineScale modeler years ago.
I think I still have it. I can scan it if you want it. My website has an email link on the main page.

28mm is only 1.1 inches. This is 1/350 scale or smaller
Not sure where you get figures other than 3D printed naval figures
