Turn that return jet down and away from the skimmer, and just keep that grated suction port closed. This will have ALL of the water in the pool moving towards the skimmer (which will be more powerful with the other suction port closed, as seen with the shark)
Also next time you drain the water down, replace the Intex return jet with the Hayward one.
All in all, nice job. These Intex pools are cheap, but come with a lot of downsides. Most Intex customers use them as a starting pool to see if they like it and I always warn them that Intex pools are more difficult to maintain because of those shortcomings

Your boy has a great attitude. Imagine how different the world would be if people ignored all the legitimate reasons they had to not do the good they needed to do. You said there wasn't enough water and there wasn't but he sure would have swum anyway if you let him. We need more people with your boy's determination.
For the return water flow I used a threaded4" pvc 90 degree and you get an awesome directional along side of the poolwall and you can direct it at the surface or futher down the wall help move any debree that tries to settle at the bottom edge of the pool.
Now thats a cool idea, thanks for sharing. 👍
Dont cut the gasket thats why people get leaks
I'd changed a lot of my hoses to PVc, a few years ago. Im about to install a 21"/1.5hp Hayward setup and skimmer. When we had a 16' round Intex pool, i installed a skimmer and didn't cut the gasket. I mounted it and cut the hole, removed the skimmer, installed the gasket as designed then the skimmer. We had no leaks.
I'm trying that again.
That’s a great setup! I couldn’t find adapting parts either, so I went to Lowe’s and bought all 2 inch pipe and went over the side of the pool. I used a 1.25 inch pipe to my over the side skimmer. I had to make a support for the pipes to not break, but the flow is incredible. Now that it’s built, it will adapt to any new pool. I found the 1.25 inch pipe they give you fails pretty quickly and replacing it is an option, but I just re engineered it instead.
Nice find on the pvc tee with the game conversion. Always scratching my head about what to do about that part of my pool build.
thanks, one of my commenter's from my previous adventure on my last pool suggested these parts. I thought it was a great solution for making an Intex T
Can you list which tee you bought? Having trouble locating it…thanks!
Great informative video. Im about to do the same. Where did you get the new outlet piece? The piece where you cut the small hole to bypass the original smaller black piece. Thanks
All the parts i used are listed in the video description, some links may no longer be valid, but in general you can find the portals on amazon.
I hadn't realized yet that I could just use PVC for the fittings. I was about to click "order" on that nearly 20 dollar Intex T pipe.
Where did you find that inlet that you talk about in at 3:54 mins with the concave screen? I cannot find one like that anywhere that is 1.5". Thanks!
What do we do if the pool only has one intake? Mine doesnt have any re-enforced area.
This is what I’m looking for
You are braver than i am. Want to do all this but too afraid of screwing up my pool. Fun to watch though.
Trust me, this was a build up overtime after having a couple of pools and figuring out what worked and what didn’t . it’s not really that bad you just got to dive in. 😀
@@Yellowdogsworld dive in...no pun intended im sure. 🤣 Thank you for the response. I think im gonna go for it.
Finally someone who shows the pump set up as well. Thank you so much!! 🙏🏾
Your welcome, happy I covered what you needed 😁
Fantastic video, I have all the parts you listed, thank you very much for that!! However the link for the OEM Inlet strainer isn't working. I have no idea what that part is or what it looks like to try and find something in place of it.
Can you share the link for the upgraded inlet and outlet please
The gasket never had been separated it coming to be inserted at the vinyl square
What exactly did you put on the bottom of the skimmer, so that the plunger valve screwed into? I can’t seem to hook my Hayward skimmer up to the intex filter. Please tell me what exactly you put on the bottom of the skimmer. Please!
The link to the adapter is listed in to comments to this video. 40mm to 1.5.. that's all you need.
Very helpful video. I’m awaiting our new pool, as well as Hayward skimmer.
I would appreciate a couple of answers from you, if you have the time:
Does the wall skimmer lower the water level a lot?
What sand pump do you use? Mine is an intex , 14”, for a 16’x48” pool.
And , most important, how is your bottom auto vacuum working? Can you tel me the brand and model you chose? Thank you!
Thanks..
1. Yes, if you place it right under the top seam, you may loose a couple of inches in depth.. but the benefit far outweighs the loss In my opinion.
2. There is a link in the video description for the sand pump I used.
3. Ive used 2 different versions of vac in last little while.. the pentair little shark, it dose a decent job for the price, but tends to miss some Areas. I then went with maytronics dolphin E10 robot.. it covers the whole pool but cost a good bit more. It doesn’t get all the fine silt like the shark did, but the main system will get it when after the robot stirs it up.
How long is does the pool last for you? I just bought a smaller Intex and want to budget for a bigger one once this one is done.
The 18 ft pool in the video I still have, it’s going on its 4th summer. The 15 ft one I had previously made it 4 summers before the metal frame work started to deteriorate beyond my comfort level. I haven’t seen the amount of deterioration/rust from the current pool…probably due to the T connections are made from PVC instead of metal. I expect it to make at least 5 seasons possibly more at this point. Hope that helps😀
Best video I’ve saw yet for this application great job and thank you.
You're welcome!
This man needs to be endorsed by the pool company. Super helpful and very well explained!
Thanks 👍
Where did you find that Shark vacuum? i'm so tired of doing it by hand
Hayward sells a few. "Aquacritter" is good one for the price. If you don't have a suction port to connect it to, Intex sells one that connects to the return line
Hard piping is the way to go, because it's one and done, hoses become weathered, and brittle, and have to be replaced every 2 or 3 years 😐
I thought about hard pipe, what held me back was the pool flex’s and moves while hard pipe does not. With some wide kids in the pool I was afraid it might not work out. It sounds like you haven’t had any issues with cracking or connections leaking.
@@Yellowdogsworld schedule 40 pvc is some flexible
How well has the liner held up with the hayward skimmer? I want to do this but am worried about longevity.
It’s doing fine so far, the plastic may have yellowed a bit from sun exposure, but no leaks, crack or fatigue that I can see.
I'm going down the above ground pool rabbit hole and stumbled on your series. Very awesome setup, thanks for sharing!
Don't you just love those UA-cam rabbit holes. 😁
Cómo hiciste la mesita para la bomba
Hello, nice job, always wanted to know how it was put together. Now I just need someone to do it for me. Thank you nice video.
As I watched this video, I noticed your pavers aren't flush with the foundation of your pool. Has that affected the legs being uneven at all?
Where did you get this inlet piece at 11:11? I don’t believe the Hayward kit or the sand filter pump came with this. Did you order this separate? Also, why not just leave the two inlets as is and Y them into your newly created Y. This way you would actually have 3 total intakes (two original plus skimmer) and no need to cut into liner at the 11:11 part. You also wouldn’t need to glue the stopper in the other intake. Thoughts?
For that part, there is a link to a couple of options in the description, unfortunately, at the moment they are way overpriced, eBay may be a good source to find one too. Running the 2 x 1.25 port's to the Intex T would work also, that's a good idea. Here are the reasons I went with this setup. I think it's a cleaner configuration, and the 1.25 hose is a clamp-on design that I've had get pulled off before just from the weight of the hose. The other way eliminates the clamp style connectors = No chance of a hose getting disconnected. Thanks for the input :)
@@Yellowdogsworld True. I ended up pulling the trigger on the 2 x 1.25” T just to avoid cutter another hole in the liner. We will see how it works. Definitely more hoses to contend with and hopefully the smaller hoses won’t pull off the fitting. May have to glue them if the clamps fail. Thanks again for the video, I found it quite helpful.
@@joshuascott3081 about to do the same approach next week, did it end up working well for you? I'd love to avoid a laughably overpriced $70 for the additional inlet and just use the 2x 1.25" like you did.. let me know when you have a minute, appreciate it!
I’m interested in 1.5 inch PVC T. Can you provide link . Your link in your description is not working. Thanks
I think the link is fixed now.. let me know if its not,,, thanks for checking it out:)
@@Yellowdogsworld it’s working now. Thank you for reat information. Thank you
Im still struggling to find the link for that superb T piece i desperatly need.. Fantastic video.. Helped a lot 👍
I have been unable to find the pool outlet that you install that connects to the plunger valve... what am I missing?
I should have watched your video. I followed another one where they traced out the gasket and then cut the hole. It was going great until the last inch when the razor knife went through like butter and made a slit a good 2 inches longer than my template! I had done another one like you did without any problems, but the video I watched said not to split the gasket. Well, we know how that went. Now I'm in the process of patching my two-inch slice past the marks.
Ouch, that’s a bummer… hope you got it fixed up.
wish I would have seen your video before I put my skimmer in! cutting the gasket and mounting the skimmer before cutting the hole is genius!
Thanks, 😀
How much depth did u lose with the Hayward skimmer ?
I think around 3 / 4 inches, In hindsight, I could have mounted it a little higher so I may have only lost a couple inches. This is the one sacrifice you have to make, and to be honest, it's been well worth it for how well it skims the pool.
Great video. Exactly what I had in mind when I was looking for a video on this. Confused why you got four thumbs down
Good question! The answer is simple though, there's always a bad apple in every bunch :)
If I allowed all the comments I get on my channel through, you would be surprised at just how rotten some apples are.
Love your setup. I have a 15’ x 48” pool too. I got this skimmer last year. I tried to use your link for the pvc T but it’s no longer available on Amazon.
Thanks, and that seems to happen to most links after a while, especially on Amazon. If you do some google searcing I'm sure you can find it.
How did you make that valve I need one too don’t even know what they call it. I think my hose is a 2”
Very nice! I really appreciate this video.
Glad it was helpful!
Any tips on how to keep the inlet hose from leak where it connect to pump. Also the connection for the basket to pump
Thank you again for your super helpful videos! I'm very inexperienced with pools & building anything in general, but I was a little surprised you didn't use any sort of silicone or such when you installed the skimmer & made the cut where you put in the plate with seals on each side. Has that stood up without leaking?
Thanks for the compliment 😊
The skimmer is holding up fine, along with the larger portals. Its been my Experience so far with these pools and seals that they don’t really require any additional sealant to work properly.
How big is your pump and your sand filter
It's a 3000 gallon per hour system
That’s a lot of cutting on that vinyl. Is this liner still standing?
Yes, it's still doing well, no issues to report 😀
just about to do this on a square XTR pool; was thinking of gluing a large patch panel first for re-enforcement; then mount over patch.
Any issues after install?
I thought about doing that as well, but since others had done the same with no issues.. I decided against it.. it’s been almost a year now and it’s doing fine. I opened the pool up 2 weeks ago so far so goods
Loop the 2 inlet ports with a hose. Then install the skimmer.
Thank's for this video! This is exactly the video that I've been looking for really enjoyed it
Glad it was helpful!
Great job buddy. Love the DIY approach. I’d round off the corrugated tin cover for your pump housing. Those rusted corners can make someone’s afternoon swim plans not fun.
I did go back later and round off the edges of the tin. Thanks for the observation 👍
Just an FYI the link you have above for the 40mm to the 1.5-inch adapter is wrong "ish". It is an adaptor as listed, but it doesn't have the O-ring on it to keep it from leaking. Amazon has the one from your video: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004TYBCEG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Just wanted to let you know before others make the same mistake I did. I had to order more since the adapter at my skimmer keeps leaking. Don't seem to have any leaks with the non O-ring adaptors on the PVC T though.
Thanks for the heads up, I updated the link :)
Great job dude👌🏻 Your Kids now have a fun and you too👍🏻
holy crap they want 40 bucks for that PVC tee...guess b/c its threaded...
I find that vendors jack the prices up for some of theses items during the summer months, when they can be found lot cheaper in the winter when no one is working on pools.
Its that old capitalist value added pricing model at work 😁
Why do you have to assemble it in a non-reinforced area? Why can’t you just assemble it were the original skimmer was placed?
The skimmer has to be mounted at the top of the pool since it’s going to limit the depth of the pool to the height of the over flow on the skimmer.. so you don’t really have a choice in where to mount it.
Great job!! Thanks for share it. I have a question for you, is that kit sold, or approved, by Intex? Those cuts on the pool wall you did are very critic. The wall is highly stressed by the water weight force, any hole on it may cause a crack propagation at any corner of it or at any dent produced during cutting,.
Thanks and no intex does not sell or endorse the modification I’ve done. This is an at-your-own-risk setup but I have had good results thus far. This is the 2nd pool I’ve done this way, and so far I’ve had no issues with pool strength. The portals are enlarged in an area that is already reinforced. The side basket is not but you can see it’s quite heavy-duty In construction. I’m heading into the 3rd pool season with this pool and so far it’s worked flawlessly.
totaly wrong set up . you have the hayword , you do not need the second input to the pump for one , for 2 you need to blow the air out of your vacume hose with the pump output to the pool, never cram air into your pump like that . the second input cuts your skimmer flow in half ( hayword) . plug the hole and run off the skimmer only like its designed to , in order to function properly. 60 years of pool building expertiese . Oh yeah i know i cant spell worth a #@$@!#!$ so dont bother correcting my language
thanks for the input Gene, and your not alone i cant spell either 😁
When I decommissioned the two rubber ports I pushed a 1/2 inch pvc cap into the hole and then secured with a hose clamp. Doesn't leak, isn't permanent.
That was a good idea 👍
if I run into issues with mine i may go that route 😃
Don't cut the skimmer gasket. Its designed to capture both sides.
We are on summer # 2 with the skimmer gasket split before installing, So far no issues 😁
Where can you get those adapters at
Amazon is where I found mine.
Would you be willing to give a list of what you used (parts, pump, skimmer, all) to have this set up?
The parts are listed in the video description
I have a Hayward sand pump but idk if want to get the skimmer, I bought the Intex floater and it works ok
I used the inside wall mounted skimmer for serval seasons before taking the dive on the hayward skimmer. It works fine providing the kids don't knock it loose or at times coming loose from the wall and catching air into the pump. The hayward just takes all that fuss out of the picture.
thumbs up, i'm going with this set up!
Cool, glad it was helpful 😁
I did the same thing, I love it, waters always clean.
When putting the 2 piece gaskets inside and out would it be wise to use some type of adhesive so the gaskets will seal to both sides of the liner, making an even more water tight seal, then put your plastic skimmer on then cut out the square hole?? It just seems that it might add more surface to grip to, especially since those screws are now going to be the only thing holding the 4 new edges in place, where there once was a solid liner...?
I’m not going to say that it would not help but I don’t know that it’s necessary. For example the other gaskets that seal the intake and output ports seal just fine without an additional adhesive. So far this set up has not leaked, and it’s clamped down pretty tight between the two parts of the skimmer. The trick would be figuring out what adhesive you could use that would not damage the liner. Any kind of petroleum based adhesive would probably damage the liner, And possibly the gasket.
Or just use the skim vac attachment
Does having that skimmer cause your pool to not be as deep now? So instead of 48 inches of water to you only have 44 now?
well, mine is about 43, but I could have placed it a couple inches higher in hind site.. so yes you may be looking at 44-45 inches.
On your scammer basket put a nylon bag over your catch Basket it will catch all the little stuff before it goes to your filter or your pump it helps keep it clean
Cool, that’s a good tip 😁
Top water flow gets the stuff out. 👌 amazing job. You didn't swear 1 time.. lol.
thanks.. the nice thing about editing, its like a do over for the mistakes and cursing I do along the way.
Did you leave this one up as well ? Just wondering if you did the same winterize method?
Yes, opened this pool up this season to a clear pool and very easy start up. 😁
Good work
Thanks
how did you keep the hoses from leaking? the T connection doesn't want to stay dry.
I haven't had any issues with the T connection so far not sure what's up?
Very Cool thank you for making this. You've given me more confidence
You’re welcome 😁
Great job, gave me some good direction to go with my pool. I just installed the intex salt system. Amazing upgrade.
What brand or company did you purchase your adapters from to fit your 1 1/2 t fitting?
There are links to all the parts i purchased in the description.
What’s sizes pump you running and. Filter
3000 gph, it’s listed in the video description
Thanks so much!
You're welcome!
What are the two Grey pieces you used at the bottom of the skimmer and coming off the other inlet?
I believe you're referring to the 2 aluminum square tubes I picked up at my local big box hardware store. I use them to support the weight of the skimmer basket and the T fitting. This way the weight is transferred to the legs of the pool rather than the vinyl siding.
Everything looks awsome, the only remark I will point out is the zink roofing you got going for the sand pump, kids will eventually run around the pool and one will end up cutting their forehead open with it.... trust me I've seen it. So round up the edges or put some edge protection or just get rid if em completely.
The rest is just flawless. The best set up I've seen so far
Thank you😊. and the tin roof on the pump house is one of those getting around to its I just didn’t get to. I do plan on cleaning up the corners.
Love your work. Where are you from. I’m looking for someone to install one.
The often overlooked state of SC.
I must admit, doing a pool install is one line of work I don’t think I’ll ever do 😁Making UA-cam how too’s is good enough for me. 😎
Where did you get the T fitting that has the ability to screw on your skimmer and the other portal
This is link I placed in the description section however its listed as unavailable at the moment. this is where I got it, I'm sure if you do some searching you can find an alternative.

How did that stock plug and glue hold up over time.?
I opened the pool up this year and so far its still there and not leaking.
Great set up mate thanks for sharing 👍. The corners of that tin roof on the pump house tho, be careful a kid don’t run into it.
Thanks, and I did round those corners off a while back.
GREAT SERIES OF VIDEOs just watched all 3 of them, GREAT INFO!
Thanks 😊
Also do I need to remove the basket when throwing in the vaccume
yes, it will get in the way.
Hello ………QUESTION
I am thinking of doing this also. What would be the problem if I added the skimmer as you did and ran it directly to the pump. And plugged both original suction ports. All of the power from the pump would be concentrated at the skimmer.
The only thing you wouldn't have is an alternate path for the suction to pull from in case the filter became blocked by someone or something.
@@Yellowdogsworld thank you for your input!😊
Love your setup. was wondering where did you get your t fitting from ? A local hardware store or online?
I got off of amazon
Great video. If you could update the one link for us less “inclined” folks like myself that would be sooooo awesome!!
Thanks, and No problem👍
Is there a way to close up the hole and move it down more?
I don't think so simply because you wouldn't be in a reinforced area for the portal.
@@Yellowdogsworld thank you for fast reply. Well crap. I'm basically going to be stealing your ideas on connecting pump. Now I gotta buy a smaller pool but use some on it. I had no idea the little vacuum can get connected to skimmer. Have you done a review on bacuum? Do you like it?
Nice video, just a shame that the adapters aren't avaiable
That always seems to be the case when your in the high point of pool season, once things taper off, you will be able to find those hard to come by parts right now.
Thank you for this video. Is there a parts list available for everything you used
The list of what I used is in the video description
Question: why did you use the other "b" for outflow instead of just using the skimmer?
We just use our skimmer but I’m finding we need to reconnect at least one of the other inlet valves that are lower than the skimmer to get the pool circulated better.
Thanks, I've been looking to find the parts to do an upgrade to my 14' intex pool I currently use a 2,500 GPH intex sand filter and you are right caring for the pool is now a dream and I find I only need to run the filter 2hrs every 12 hrs and when people are in the pool to maintain a perfectly clean pool. With the hayward skimmer it will be even better!
Your welcome, I’m glad to here it worked out so well. 😊
Great video............How about the water level? Can it be higher? Seems pretty low?
yes, in hind site I could have installed it a little bit higher. may have gained an inch or 2 of depth. Unfortunately, there are no do-overs in life... or on youtube.. 😊
@@Yellowdogsworld Still looking good. Just received my Hayward skimmer. Going to install in the weekend 😎😎☀️
Thanks so much for the video! Do you think the 3000 GPH pump COULD run the two inlets and skimmer basket simultaneously (if I wanted to keep both inlets in addition to the skimmer)?
Without trying it myself, I can't say for sure. The only thing you could possibly compromise is the skimmer's effectiveness. However, if you have a plunger valve on each port, you can always turn a port off, them your back to two :)
Question: why would you make twice the cuts by cutting the gasket in half? It doesn't save any time... compression seals the gasket when you draw the screws tight on the skimmer. In my opinion and experience, it only adds room for error.
Oh, I see now. You used the skimmer as a template to cut the pool liner. Gonna be honest man, if you fill it up to just below where you're cutting, it cuts really easy. I did mine without the proper water level, it really wasn't hard.
I explained my logic on that in the video. Here’s a little more detail, with the weight of the water pulling on the side walls I did not want to run the risk of cutting the hole unsupported by the basket. If it distorted at all or tore worst case I’d have a ruined pool. To install the gasket in one piece you’d have to make the hole first insert the Gasket then install the filter. I guess you could do it without the water in the pool, but the side walls won’t be at their normal level of tension.. so again you may have the same problem.
cool, thats good to know. I did not want to risk it, but it sounds like you were successful. I will keep that in mind on my next pool.
From the sounds of it, either way you go about it, its going to work out fine.
This was really helpful.but there is one more modification you need to do. Please put some kind of edge protector ONNTHE edges of that corrugated roof sheeting over the pump or change it to polyethylene or plastic sheeting or starboard, to prevent major or life threatening injuries. It made me cringe to see that.
yep, been meaning to that, was going to round off the corners with a grinder,,, and maybe some kind of trim to prevent that. Thanks for the observation :)
@@Yellowdogsworld just slit a pool noodle and push it over the edge. Cheap and easy.
I like this set up. I’d prefer a “Y” fitting over the “T” fitting if there is one made like that.
There’s not one that I can find.. but it would be cool if there was 🤔
Nice. I have been looking for a connector that works properly.
So long as the parts are available they do the job quite nicely.
You lost about 4" pool depth by not keeping skimmer as high as possible. You will lose a little depth when adding an inwall skimmer but not necessary to lose that much depth.
yep in hindsight,
I could have saved a couple inches of depth, either way, the setup is working wonderfully 😁
@@Yellowdogsworld It's working and you're satisfied...that's a win win. I'm also putting in an in-wall skimmer and 2 returns on my pool this year. I already purchased a sand filter pump. I just purchased this home and it came with an 18' x 48" pool that needs leveling and upgraded so i watch these videos to try and avoid those mistakes before it happens. I appreciate your time and hopefully I wont make too many mistakes especially the ones that cant be fixed.
this is the best setup i ever seen
do you think i can use this setup with 1500gph Bestway sand filter?
another question sir, the OEM inlet strainer is not available with the link you’v provided, how does it like or where i can find it?
your work is appreciated
thank you
Thanks :)
I don't see why this setup wouldn't work with the 1500 GPH sand filter. It would help that pump flow the best it's ever going to flow at any rate.
As far as where to find the inlet strainer? I'm not surprised the alternate and the OEM are unavailable, they are hard to come by during the summer months when pool parts are in high demand. eBay might be a good place to look, but since those links have a short life span it won't do me much good to post them since they'd expire in a week or 2. Best of luck getting your pool set up.
@@Yellowdogsworld am glad that you replay to my question
i have bought most of the items in the links you provided but as we said the OEM intel strainer is not available.
the sand filter i bought before i see your video was Bestwsy sand filter, i didnt buy intex filter.
i hop that the items will fit with the one i bought!
thank you👍🏼
now the skimmer installed; you will to maintain certain water level right?
Yes "I think" the height that you mount the skimmer determines the pool water level.
@@Yellowdogsworld Thanks bro for the reply. I am planing to build one for kids; with them playing around; expecting lots of splashes; harder to maintain the water level. I will be looking into a wall mount skimmer too. it will take extra space of pool space though. thanks the awesome video!
Thanks for the great video good work

You made it look so easy. Now I can do it to mine witch is a lot smaller. Thanks for being the Lab rat.
Lol… I’ve been Called a lot of things.. but a lab rat is new one 😆
