  • I have learned a lot over the years from mentors, books and experience. I had mentors in real life but my book writing, video making mentor was Mors Kochanski. His recent passing has left a hole in the Bushcraft community. I'm this video I honor him and his achievements.

One of the biggest reasons I enjoy learning from you Dave is because you have a humble heart and it's hard to fake a humble heart. I respect you giving credit to your mentor the late great Mors Kochanski. I commend your dedication to him.
The bushcraft community are learning Mors techniques and your many skills and techniques through your dedication and love of buschcrafting. I for one and my household appreciate you and Nick for taking the time to share your knowledge.
This video is a heartfelt dedication to Mors. I know he is smiling upon you both from heaven.
Here's to Mors, may his bushcraft coffee forever flow in rivers of heaven 🍮
    Thank you Dave,

Coffee is the best part of the life. I do camp coffee over my fire pit and the neighbors just start coming by and asking me if it is my bushcraft coffee. Before it's done I average two to four people in my backyard having what they say is the "best damn coffee they ever had" every time I fire up the pit. When asked where I got the idea to make coffee that way I always credit Mr. Kochanski.

Mors not only loved nature and the art of bushcraft he had true bushcraft skills and he truly enjoyed sharing his vast knowledge with people who wanted to learn. Now more than ever people are rediscovering the bushcraft ways because of men like Mors, and with his passing The torch is being passed to men like you Dave who will carry on learning and sharing the art of Bushcraft so it's never lost.

He left quite an impact wherever he went. Pretty sure he was the one who introduced me to flint and steel and charcloth. I was living in Alberta and was in elementary school back in the 70s and we had a student teacher bring in her outdoor Ed instr from university to teach the kids a bit about wilderness survival. I remember a kind bearded man who wore that Scottish cap with the pom pom on it. Years later I bought Bushcraft and found some old videos on UA-cam. Can't say for certain it was him but the timeframe frame, skills taught, area I lived, university Outdoor Ed instr and that cap I am pretty sure it was him and surprised that memory of Bushcraft introduction has stuck around that long.
Proof that teaching a child outdoor skills makes a difference.

You may not realize this but you are a mentor to all of us. I'm an old fart and have been bush crafting for a long time. Back in the late eighties or early nineties, after the fire department, and the military I began searching for ways to truly live off the land ( strangely enough I had ever put it in my high school year book, but never remembered), after a bitter divorce, it was a way of coping I believe? I bought two books by Tom Brown ,field guide to wilderness survival, and one on tracking. Both I learned a lot from, even though I'd been hunting since fourteen years old. He also taught special forces like Mors. I learned and practiced a lot. I worked in the antique trade and my time was flexible. My mother bought me a book called " how to shit in the woods ", and I learned from that too, and laughed of course. After a lifetime of learning how not to die in the worst conditions, I finally joined the rest of the people in the 21st century. I was amazed at all of the inventions involved in bushcraft that would've made my life much easier or more comfortable. I knew how to make bush coffee, but not exactly the same. I used and prefer a French press for the same reasons that make bush coffees so good. All the grounds saturated with all the water. Never heard of brown sugar and condensed milk but it sounds good. Never heard that egg shell thing either, the only time I ever heard of egg shells and coffee was to add to our mulch pile when I was a kid. I thought it was there just to assist the worms in breaking up that god awful red clay. Ive only actually made mountain coffee a few times, and all we added was moonshine. As I said in the beginning, you're all of ours, mentor. I haven't watched a single video you've done without learning. A lot I'll never get to try, and Florida is a completely different environment. I've been here since 85 ' , I came with the military out of nine inches of snow and nine degrees, and a few hours later to ninety six degrees with palm trees swaying. I walked straight to the payphone and called my folks, " mom , dad, I'm never coming back ". The older I get, the dumber I get. When I was sixteen I knew it all, but get dumber all the time. I realize that there is no end to what you can learn, what will be the next greatest invention do to help make bush crafting just a bit of a tweak to enrich our experience. Brother Dave, you do these things, create these things, like cooking systems etc., Mors has passed the torch to you and I cannot imagine a better man to entrust it to.

I didn't know who Kochanski was until last year. I had bought a TB tracker and then found a book by Tom Brown. Mors has influence a lot of great bush-crafters out there ( Men & Women). What a great man. The humbleness is one element which adds to the greatness in us all. Dave here has a few tricks of his own which he passes on from other sources (some are his own). I am sure I can speak for many when I say we would all like to emulate great men like Mors, and Dave. My scout masters were not as inventive as these guys, they taught me quality of being genuine. Everyone makes mistakes, everyone has faults. I try to let people see the real me and I can see the human in others because of this. Rest in Peace Mors and thank you Dave for the tribute.

I can attest to the incredible knowledge that is lost to the people of today. Smokey always wore a Smokey the Bear hat. Funny as all get out. Found out when I took that last sip. Two differences. The grind is a course powder not as fine as espresso grind but much finer than regular ground coffee and no cold water is added to the hot coffee to settle the grinds. I like Turkish coffee so much I have two pots a single size and company size. About evaporated milk. As a child that is all we ever used. Moms in New Orleans gave their kids coffeemilk which is half evaporated milk and half strong coffee and chicory. In fact my very first flavor memory is coffeemilk.

But instead of the cold water pouring what I do is tap my cup on a flat surface several times to drop the grounds to the bottom this works really good for me it keeps my coffee nice and hot. A very fitting tribute to Mors. I had no idea that he was the inspiration and foundation of what I call the modern movement of outdoor living. It's so easy to see, not only in your vids, but in all the vids put out by others the influence the man had. You also paid tribute to your own mentors and the influence they had and that is important. Once, awhile back you posted a Q asking us who are our influences. I replied that you Dave are my influence. Not blowing smoke, but I have learned much from following you all these years. Often times I have found myself in a situation and I asked what would Dave do? And more often than not it was something you showed that saved the day. Such is the level of influence you have on me.
Thank you for all the entertaining and informative vids!

@@Reallybigmonkey1 Dave, I really had to think about this and try to keep it in context of not only your intent but also from my own feelings. So here it goes: First, we all have our own influences, sometimes many influences on what we do and how we use it. And, yes those need to be honored and given all due credit. Mors was certainly one of those so good job on your part. To be honest, I think you were the only one to give him any credit. Also, you do give credit to your own influences which in turn have become my influences. That is how it works. Learn, do, pass it on.
So that brings me to you. You embody all that. You bring everything together and in your own way pass it along and give your own take on things. Do we see eye to eye on things? Nope. Mainly because I don't have the same access that you do. But we do share somethings.
We both share that get out there and do it mentality. We both have that does it work mentality. If not, how can we make it work mentality. That's why I have the "What Would Dave Do" mentality. Make it work. That's what we do.

Thanks, Dave. It was really nice of you to make this fitting tribute to Mors. We will all miss him. I think his influence reached millions of Scouts, bushcrafters, preppers, and campers. Whether in person or through his books and other media outlets (even his UA-cam channel) he has mentored the mentors of today's mentors. He is probably the last of the titans of woodsmanship to take his place in the pantheon alongside Horace Kephart, George Washington Sears (Nessmuk), et al. I raise my glass to Mors Kochansky.
You seem to confuse the drip coffee method with the percolator method. True, in both cases fluid percolates through the grounds, but it is the drip method in which it only does so once. In the percolator method, it boils up and drips through over and over again. Personally, I prefer the French press method, or something like it, which allows the grounds to steep for some time but doesn't require one to "bruise the delicate oils" with boiling water [ideal temp. = 190-200°F (88-96°C)]. Since I don't like diluted milk, wouldn't think of thinning out delicious cream, and love the unadulterated taste of coffee, I never pollute my coffee with creamers or sweeteners, except when I want a drink for desert and have an Irish coffee (½-1 tsp. brown sugar in a wine goblet, ½ oz. Kahlua, 1 oz. premium Irish whiskey. Stir it. Add about 5 oz. coffee and immediately float a good cover of whipped cream on top to trap the spirits.
Garnish with a sprinkle of turbinado sugar or granulated honey. Here's to Mors Kochansky.

When I was about 14 my Dad took me hunting with some of the men that worked out in the shop. They had a kitchen set up under a tent & I vividly remember the coffee. It was cowboy and amazing. It was also made from 132 lbs. of Brazilian (Santos) bags that were landed in Jax. but destined for Mia, Phil, NY, or NOLA (LOL). All of the stevedores did the same thing and no one ever complained with the exception of the coffee importers. The beans were then taken to a local roaster where it was roasted, ground and bagged in little brown paper sacks. This was back in the mid 60's & continued for many years until coffee started coming in super sacks. To this day you cannot buy coffee that good. I don't know who Moro was, but he was definitely born again.

I have a trendy coffee machine and coffee bean grinder but I make "Mors coffee" on the stove top every morning this way now. No bitterness, no grounds and it's smooth and chocolatey. And that's with any coffee, in fact the cheaper the better. The only thing I use the trendy coffee machine for now is to heat the milk with the steamer facility so basically it's redundant. I'm now hoping the trendy coffee machine can be sold.
