Yes i admit we all want a RS6 but as you stated the reality is we wont have one so seeing these reviews is really refreshing and nice
Couldn't agree more with that new RS6 point. All these reviews touting them as "cool factory sleepers" etc. The brake disks are bigger than my rims and the RS6 badging is HUGE and RED. Nothing about that feels very sleeper to me.
I had a dark gold coloured 1.8petrol v40 I bought in scotland for 400 pounds. What a car. Handles well very comfy for a 6ft man. Spacious. Safe. Beautiful lines. You cannot do better folks for the money. Highly underated collaboration.
After being parked for over 5 years, I’ve decided to bring my 1999 Volvo V40 T4 back to life. It’s been sitting idle due to an oil leak from a camshaft seal, but your videos have inspired me to give it a second chance. Over the years, I’ve driven many powerful cars, like the Sierra Cosworth and the Lancia Delta Integrale, but the V40 T4 holds a special place in my heart. It has it all: comfort, reliability, power, and a design that deceives, with its sheep-like appearance hiding a wolf under the hood. As for reliability, I have to be honest: the oil leak wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t carelessly overfilled the oil back then. A lesson learned, but it hasn’t diminished my love for this extraordinary car. I can’t wait to restore it and enjoy every mile behind the wheel again. Thank you for the inspiration!
I really love this type of video. Like you said it's so cool if a simple car is built well. I highly prefer this personal touch combined with all the hard work over people with a ton of money buying yet another supercar for a quarter million euros. A humble V40 that has had the proper treatment is an absolute joy yet still very relatable, anyone could set out to build something like this on a reasonable budget and have a great time. Much better than watching 1000+ hp cars that I'll never be able to afford. (I had a V40 2.0t for three years and switched to a V70n T5 about 2 years ago, so much fun to drive!)
The v40 holds a special place in my heart, it's a car i sat in hundreds of ours in as a kid because my dad owned a 2003 1.8l for a few years before getting a 2004 1.9l and i naturally grew up to be a volvo person, these cars are sleepers thats for sure.
who'd thought Evo parts would fit in a Volvo due to some very deep connections.. living and learning. Absolutely loved the stock(ish) look around this amazing setup. great car and video!
Me and my wife love the older Volvos, we bought an 850r saloon 12 years ago as our first car and daily driver ( worked at same place ) then 8 months later a S40 T4 popped up locally with low miles ( 32k ) so we went and looked, full dealer history and great price really, it then became our daily up until two years ago when we decided it was time to put her away for an easier life ( now on 48,789 miles ), brilliant car never had a problem with it really comfy and genuinely reliable and quick, if you can find one today thats been looked after you really cant go wrong, loved the video keep the volvo uplands coming
A couple of years ago I needed a cheap car and just happened to stumble on a V40 T4. I loved that car. It was a total surprise how much joy I got from it.
Damn, i have raced against this one in streetraces in gothenburg, i lost when i had my S70 but it sounds and looks fantastic! Lots of props to the dude!
I have owned my 1999 V40 T4 for a few months now and I love this car so so much. I wanna give it a little bit extra power after fixing a small oil leak. I have done 2 road trips, one to England that was a total of 4'000kms and one to the Netherlands that was 2'000kms, where I also visited NedCar to get a photo of it at it's "birthplace". It has not let me down. So comfortable, really rapid and people do not expect this old car to go this fast. Blackberry Pearl in colour as well.

Thats what distinguised it from the ' average' V40 gen 1. Also T4 had those solid gaspra 16 inch rims the looked so classy. I did remember the torque steer, it was wild.
My first car was a 2005 Mustang with V6 engine; it felt like a SUV, but had almost no usable space. My second car was a 2000 Volvo V40; it felt small, but had tons of space. Really nice car.
I own 2003 s40 2,0t .. 110.000km ,man if you just keep the rust under control they are the most amazing car ever! Nice engine, good steering and reliable like crazy, love my car !! ❤ great vid!

volvo's are in general extreamly underrated, i myself also got a 2004 s60 which used to be my dads he bought it back in 04 and shortly after got a small tune done on it giving it an output just around 200hp ofc nothing crazy but more then enough to have a good amount of fun :) i took over the car back in 2017 and its been nothing but a joy to have it since then. if you happen to be in the market for a first car or just a decent car on a budget i would very much recommend looking in to the volvos around this era since they are incredibly cheap you really do get alot of car for the money. oh yeah little side note due to volvo also having an image of being extreamly safe they are also dirt cheap to get insurance for :)
I had v70 from 2006, 2.4 atmosphere gasoline. It was such a beautiful cruiser, well with turning point of the tanker but anyway still remember kf comfy seats and beautiful insulation of weather and sounds inside. Beautiful sound of stright 5 cyl. Now i have Honda accord tourer cl9 2.4 vtec and i am enjoying differently, still i had to admit v70 had far way more luxury feeling. About 3 months i have them compare face to face, but v70 was bifuel cng with blown gasket at the end with ending gas tanks and it juat didnt had any ecconomy sence to fix the car, i was so close to buy 2.3 5cyl with turbo and around 180kw bjt there was so many work to do as well i just went to accord and enjoying different car now. Glad to see you enjoying v40 :,) Volvo did good job on the chasis, that feels nice and solid with no body roll
I'd love a V40 T4 if it wasn't for the rust. It's not a problem in the Netherlands I guess, but here in Sweden they are true rust buckets! Conditions here is absolutely horrible for cars. Many years ago I chose a '97 Saab 900 2.0 Turbo Talladega coupé instead of a Volvo S40 T4. No regrets, ever, over that choice. A little less power but such a nice car!
If he wants to go all out, I've read that the V40's drive train can be converted to the EVO's making it AWD. If that's true, imagine what a beast of a car this little wagon would be.
I checked on the evolutionm forum one person asked for their S40 and, supposedly, it can! Everybody there called his car an Evolvolution :'D P.S: I would give you the link to the thread, but it looks like youtube deletes comments containing any links, so... It' ll be the first site when you it up

My mum had a 96 2.0 with the sport pack, and the grip was mental from factory. The only 140bhp it was quite punchy in stock form too. Such an underrated, solid car. Love Volvo's. Great vid👍
YOOO I love the video! Thank you so much for showing this car to the world! More comming next year with ''widebody'' stuff! Shoutout to that fly tho... (In this video the car got brand new tyres wich makes it grip really well, plus it only weighs like 1 300kg full fluids no driver so quite agile/quick)
I have never ever looked at Volvos. My father used to have one of these exact V40s (don't remember what engine it had though) when I was a kid, and that's all the Volvo experience I ever had, I found it a bit of a boring car at the time. But thanks to this review and this review only, now I have shortlisted these as I know I will need a more practical car sooner or later. Great stuff. I love this sort of content and these sorts of tastefully modded and loved cars much more than the latest and greatest 600 horsepower expensive supercars we can't utilize in 99% of conditions anyway.
Volvo has made some great cars. Currently I drive a 2011 V60 T6 (it's technically my father's car) and it's in my opinion a fun car to drive. It has 304 HP which I think is around the perfect amount because like you said we basically never need 600 HP in day to day life but the 304 HP still provide a hefty amount of power. It's AWD and handles great but it still has character, and you can easily take it for a little drifting session on a gravel parking lot for example.
Thought the same! A fly in the car is more distraction than talking over an mobile phone while driving :-D Some should put a law that forbids flies flying around in car while driving !!!
I had a 2001 S40 T4 from new. It was a proper sleeper car for it's time. Nobody expected an entry level model Volvo to have 200 BHP. The handling wasn't the best but I didn't really know it at the time (until I got my first BMW). It looked great in silver with the little boot spoiler (and my first car to have leather). Just waiting for delivery of my M240i xDrive...
Lovely car and video! That V40 is fast with 260Hp and only 1300kg, I mean my V90 Cross Country T5 has 261 Hp with a polestar tune but it is almost 1900 Kg 😅
love the v40 i am just so jealous how clean this one looks compared to mine, and kind of the same story i bought mine from my grandpa too. (mine is the 1.9d 102hp)
I have owned two v40t4 both phase 1 and 2. Was very happy with them exept a couple of things, the handbrake sucks. I had to mess with the calipers every year to get it through inspection. The engines isnt wery rew happy imho, they kind of die off up in the rpm's, atleast stock tune. And the side mirrors starts flapping around at 180 km/h :D
2.4 atmos were the most reliable one's from volvo (with awesome 5cyl sound) and not only from volvo but in comparison with any other brand's engine ever existed..good engines, good torque, decent power, wrong cars/barely acceptable appearance..if only 5cyl 103-120kw engines were in first gen. S/V40, that are really a lot more pretty cars..the only volvo with 5cyl closest to a cool looking one was a prefacelift C30, that was totally fcuked up in the back end..if not the back it could have been an awesome car, with turbo or na setup..but naahh..
I recently sold my V40 2.0T and I agree they are really underrated cars. It only has 163hp but it's surprisingly fun to drive. They're absolute rustbuckets but you can get a really nice example for like 2k
Dont know where you live, but in Finland T4 is worth like 1k, ive had three S/V40 T4 and one S60 T5. Anyone who says this car is good on basic, havent tried anything better, like example S60 is a luxury compared to S/v40 class :) If ppl want to spend money and time tuning this crappy rusty car your free to do so. But its gonna take this 2k to get it good to drive. I can say this from experience :D And in example S60 T5 is still worth 3k even after 7 years, still the same price wich is amazing.
I've went from 02 s40 t4 to 04 s60 t5 and it is much better, and doesn't cost much more for ok examples. I paid like 5k for my 04 s60 t5 because of it had 240k km of highway miles which i think for volvo is pretty low, spent few more k's and now im running it at 400hp 🤔
This is 100% what I want. I love humble cars. Ones people actually use. It would be fun if you guys did a tasteful modification/restoration series on your v40.

My first car was a 2000 V40 2.0T, loved it. sadly I crashed it after only 1 years ownership.
I've enjoyed watching this video. Have you made anything about volvo v50 T5?
You should do the S60 D5! Amazing car and even more amazing engine!
Thought the same! A fly in the car is more distraction than talking over an mobile phone while driving :-D
Some should put a law that forbids flies flying around in car while driving !!!
My dad had a v40, i drove it i few times a really fun car, really "gokarty" ...now i want one :P
Pretty cool MAX...I just bought TODAY a VOLVO V50 T5...THE successor of this V40 T4...
Please do more reviews of 4cyl cars from all makes.
Back in the day these were actually pretty popular in drag racing events here in Sweden, with lots of tuning, very rarely seen nowdays though
Most of them have rusted out and been beaten up by teenagers.
MORE Volvos please, had the same Face lift T4 but unfortunately an auto, so I sold it and got an 850 T5 wagon that we manual swopped.
I love that turbo sound 👌
You guys need to try a 240 turbo 😍 i love my 245 glt and it drives very well!
Sorry you went to the dark side. You'll be back once you realise BMW's have no soul
@@pede8889 Sorry to disapoint you but I'm on BMW number 7.
Lovely car and video! That V40 is fast with 260Hp and only 1300kg, I mean my V90 Cross Country T5 has 261 Hp with a polestar tune but it is almost 1900 Kg 😅
s40 and v40 were solid cars . mine had 200k before it got scrapped
Wow, that thing is a beast!
love the v40 i am just so jealous how clean this one looks compared to mine, and kind of the same story i bought mine from my grandpa too. (mine is the 1.9d 102hp)
Great sleeper like a Subaru Forrester turbo i once had, made me smile
I also had a V40 Sport Edition with Arcadia's, lowered, full Ferrita exhaust and a tune (230hp). I liked it quite a lot.
Amazing car. Has its spirit.
Praise well deserved such a nice car it's not all about out right speed it's more how the car feels that's old school at it's finest 👌
You guys need to try and get your hands on a HSV Clubsport wagon or Maloo. Those things are a lot of fun
And the side mirrors starts flapping around at 180 km/h :D
quite funny you kept the broken door handle in the vid
My dad had a Volvo s60 2006 2.4l 120kw thats an amazing car
2.4 atmos were the most reliable one's from volvo (with awesome 5cyl sound) and not only from volvo but in comparison with any other brand's engine ever existed..good engines, good torque, decent power, wrong cars/barely acceptable appearance..if only 5cyl 103-120kw engines were in first gen. S/V40, that are really a lot more pretty cars..the only volvo with 5cyl closest to a cool looking one was a prefacelift C30, that was totally fcuked up in the back end..if not the back it could have been an awesome car, with turbo or na setup..but naahh..
I have one in red. I love this car ❤ Also I have new Audi A5 but still V40 T4 stay in my garage 😁
Imagine how annoyed the cars in front were when he was trying ti swipe the fly and it looked in the mirror that he was nervous to get space 🤣
I had a T4 and would love another one. As far as I was aware they stopped making the T4 around 2000?
I recently sold my V40 2.0T and I agree they are really underrated cars. It only has 163hp but it's surprisingly fun to drive. They're absolute rustbuckets but you can get a really nice example for like 2k
Dont know where you live, but in Finland T4 is worth like 1k, ive had three S/V40 T4 and one S60 T5. Anyone who says this car is good on basic, havent tried anything better, like example S60 is a luxury compared to S/v40 class :)
If ppl want to spend money and time tuning this crappy rusty car your free to do so. But its gonna take this 2k to get it good to drive. I can say this from experience :D
And in example S60 T5 is still worth 3k even after 7 years, still the same price wich is amazing.
