It genuinely saddens me how the algorithm can promote content which takes minimal effort to create, and then content like this flies under the radar. Honestly this terrifies me. You brought up an amazing point about how humans being easy to manipulate via fear and propaganda. It’s crazy how it’s already happening and its terrifying to think about what will happen. I’m not good at explaining what I think but this video brought up an amazing point. If only the lesson could be brought to so many more people.
To be honest, I feel like I'm going insane at times when it comes to politics. The point about how it seems like everyone is living in completely different realities speaks to me on another level. It's overwhelming being surrounded by people who have so many different beliefs in my day to day life. One is angry the other is not, how do we let trivial things take control of our entire being mentally and emotionally. I'm just rambling nonsense probably so I'll leave my thoughts at that.
A memory from my childhood I'll never forget was not being able to sleep most nights when my family and I were living with my grandparents. All I could hear for hours on end was Grandma and Grandpa screaming at the TV. A news agency that I'm not going to disclose because in the end it doesn't really matter, was reporting the latest exploits of the president. They weren't even listening to what the reporter was saying. Their rage, and hate, their desire to kill and maime the President blotted out their personality. It was scary not because they became such radically different people when that TV switched on for the late night news. But because how seamless the transformation was. Years later when I learned about the two minutes of hate I got chills. The vivid description of the rage and hate like a fine laser pointed at whatever the news agency demanded instantly brought back memory of my grand parents turned to screaming, grimacing lunatic, fuelled by reactionary anger and news sponsored outrage. There's a another scene from 1984 that reminded me of them was when somebody in the book was putting up reactionary posters and demonizing an enemy to the party. Only to receive new information they stared praising this person as a beloved ally who had never betrayed Big Brother. Even going so far as to say that a spy had put up those posters minutes earlier. I remember this same news agency demonizing a policy that the current president reinstated and my grandparents furious frothing at the mouth monsters like they were when the TV was on. Only to soon find out that the reinstated policy was originally started by a former president that belonged to their voting party and they instantly changed their opinion and praised this decision with unnerving enthusiasm seemingly forgeting they ever had a problem with it in the first place.

"Cyberpunk 2077 has actually been ready for release for a year now" You sure about that? It's out for almost 4 months now, and it still isn't ready for release.
This video was brilliant you brought up some interesting points and I really enjoyed it. I thought I’d suggest that you give Neuromancer a read as The writers of cyberpunk 2020 cited as one of their biggest influences, it’s not the same as 1984 but there are certain parts of it that really make you feel uncomfortable so if you’re hoping for that kind of a feeling in cyberpunk 2077 it might help give you some context. Keep up the good work looking forward to the next video.
Just checked out the first few pages and bought it on Amazon. I know cyberpunk, as a genre, is sorta defined by heavy political themes, but didn't want to talk about it because I'm really not familiar with the genre beyond the Blade Runner movies. Thanks for the suggestion
@@DJPeachCobbler yo! check out snow crash, hardwired and the entire sprawl saga which is just more stories in the neuromancer universe. also check out a pretty cool trashy comic called Empty Zone.
Not every game has to take a political stance on every issue, but people that whine about pandering before a game has even come out aren't even trying to think critically. That said if a dev makes a design decision that takes a deviation from the norm that could be construed as 'political statement,' I do hope they consider that angle and treat the choice with the appropriate attention to detail. Perhaps CDPR didn't think about the ramifications of having a separate body type/voice selector (unlikely) and they explore none of these themes, but knowing them I doubt it. If games want to get anywhere as an art form they're going to need to step up and ask questions like these to their audiences. They need to challenge players in more than just gameplay. And games criticism (including journalism, but that's a different can of worms) will be the driving force of getting people to look past the number go up simulators they purchase, and videos like these contribute much more to the advancement of the medium. Appreciate you DJPC.
I think that, a cyberpunk game, if anything, needs to be political. Otherwise, it's just some metal arms and neon. Which is nice and all, but a real waste. I'm just a humble Cobbler, but that bit at the end means a lot, thank you.
@@DJPeachCobbler I do humbly disagree to a degree that Cyberpunk need to always be political, but I do see your point :) For example, Va11-Hall-A is a pretty neat Cyberpunk Bartender Action game that actually isn't too political - instead focusing more on interpersonal relationship between the people that you (or in case Jill, the main character) and patrons have. It is a pretty neat indie game I highly recommend!
@@jerrodshack7610 well there's genre and Aesthetic. So if it's "wow pretty neon lights! Ooooo cyborg people, flying cars!" That's more Aesthetic, if you ask me. This is probably my favourite vid you've made. So much truth, I've been saying it since I was 17 "the problem isn't plastic surgery, trans and things like that, these things are only going to become better and cheaper as time goes on so just get used to it, some people like tattoos, some don't, some get hair transplants, others choose to go bald". Also the bit about Orwell, personally I don't like the dude (from what I've heard admittedly) but 1984 is prescient. I'm inclined to believe there may not be a way of stopping it, if the economy gets bad, people are gonna turn to the authoritarian right or left, you can see that even now, the libertarians are always the smallest faction, this is the case throughout history. People just like rulers, they like a "daddy", it makes em feel safe, they don't like to think for themselves, not when you have two bad options and you gotta pick the least bad, so they go into the arms of those who promise them the world in exchange for power. The only 2 ways I see of stopping an Orwellian world in the likes of 1984 is avoiding economic crash (which is out of our hands and looks a dead cert when you account for climate change), or the rulers not being willing to risk it all due to M.A.D, that is what stopped the cold war going hot.
Outstanding as always my dude. The tie in with 1984 was, as usual, a completely new view that I have never thought of before. Very fun to have new ideas that tie into new games. If I could smash a second like button for the fact you used Red Dead 2’s surreal ending theme music, then I would
Great vid as always. I was gonna type this comment on the first day this vid was posted but I held off and collected my thoughts a bit I feel when people say “don’t politicize video games” the don’t mean it word for word. I remember saint row three having the voice and gender separate and no one cared. But now with cyber punk it’s a big deal. It’s not the games that have changed it’s the culture they exist in. Politics have in some way always been in games. Look at metal gear and it’s cometary on war for money and censorship. People didn’t mind because it was done well of course. I thought back to almost every political gaming controversy and almost none of it had anything to do with the actual story or game play. Even as someone who jumped on the lou2 hate train it’s a fine game from the looks of it. Idk about other people but when I say “don’t politicize video games” I’m not talking to the people who make them cause there doing fine. I’m talking to us. Because we are the ones who politicize it. I found your channel a couple of days ago and even thought i disagreed with some of what you’ve said. your channel has real got me to re evacuated some of my believes and thoughts and I thank you for that.
Yeah, that feature in Cyberpunk was definitely blown ridiculously out of proportion. I feel that if Saints Row came out with that gender slider in character creation TODAY, it would be a shit storm. Although, probably people from the other side of the aisle would be angry at that, seeing as it's meant to be more comedic in Saints Row. The thing about the Cyberpunk controversy, to me, is that it makes so much sense for that world. They clearly thought a bit about the ramifications of human augmentation being widespread and commonplace. I appreciate that they didn't shy away from that
I think the bigger issue is that "don't politicize video games" is a poor articulation of their actual concerns, which range from "AAA gaming is creatively bankrupt look at call of battle fortress 2256". this then combines the concern that it seems their is an attempt to put fanservice to a political block who isn't even the majority of the player base in games. these political causes/blocks/groups that have histories of doing good are now tarnished by scandal or taking things too far. add into the mix a bunch of bad sequels that either do major retcons/don't make sense in the games world/story on top of not being a worthy follow up to the original/originals and you've got a recipe for "politics makes games bad". there are other events like trying to hold the gaming press to account for their ethical lapses resulting in shit flinging mess that makes CNN claim it's what got trump elected in 2016. The actual cry seems to me to be "Keep making FUN X games, what you showed us looks to be full of fanservice that isn't for your fans." TL:DR communist undertale is a poor choice for a mainline doom game, instead make fun doom games.

Controversial opinion - I grew up in post-communistic, post-fascist country (back to back) and I fucking hate 1984, did so as a kid and do now, considering it one of the most overrated books ever written. Reason? Living on totalitarian planet with no escape is like getting stomped on by Godzilla. Its here, its unchangeable. What about what led to it? Thousand cuts that everyone ignored. I studied (in elementary school as basic curriculum) how communism and fascism both rose to power. Those things didn't took over because they were grey, sad and spoken with Oscar nomination. They rose to power because most people in one place believed its the best way to go, at least only way to go. People didn't *vote* for Hitler because he promised to kill Jews, they did it because he was only one promising health care, unity, help to poor. Likewise, people didn't start Russian Civil War because they wanted to send their neighbor to gulag, they did it because they thought they will starve anyway, and other guys at least claimed they have way out. TLDR 1. 1984 teaches wrong lesson 2. Totality already being here isn't problem, how we not noticed until it was too late 3. Frankly, German movies "he came back" and "the wave" are better place to go. Almost as people who lived trough it (germans, slavs) knew more then people who never did (brits, americans)

Subverted my expectations with this one. When I read the title, I instantly connected with it. My interest in cyberpunk will hinge on how well it explores cyberpunk's roots: anticapitalism and the implications of a society where corporations have more power than government (ala bioshock). That's what I thought this video was going to be about. Was a bit more interesting than that. 1984 comparison was a stretch for me but good video man, would've loved to hear more about how you think that augmentation and modulation would affect society. Tbh this video turned out far more messy than intended. At a point, I just couldn't bear looking at it anymore. I think I just really wanted to get that 1984 thing off my chest, because I find this rising wave of support for old authoritarian ideologies very scary. I do think it's relevant to Cyberpunk, as I think exploring heavy themes with sci-fi is really important and helps prepare people for possible futures. Also, of course, cyberpunk media is, inherently, dystopic, and I'd be very disappointed if they didn't show why that was the case. I do hope (and think) Cyberpunk will have prominent anti-capitalist themes. It's a mainstay of the genre. There was a bit in the "Tour of Night City" trailer that I nearly included in the video, but decided against. They essentially list homelessness statistics, crime rates, and the line, "America's fucked, and I don't know what we're gonna do." Obviously, very relevant themes. I hope they run with it, and explore them. I do fear it will just be at a Grand Theft Auto level, where they just sorta point out things that are obviously shitty, and say that, yes, they ARE shitty.
Did no one noticed that a separate body/voice pick was the norm for loads of RPGs for ages? It was a thing in pillars of eternity, tyranny, pillars of eternity 2, and have been normal for games of that kind for ages... Since like you can play a female body character in DnD while having a male voice and vice versa, so separate selection was a thing for ages... It was even a thing in saints row...

I just wish Deus Ex caught on as much as 2077 since it’s the Grandfather of Cyberpunk games. Now we have half of a prequel that’ll never be finished. *Sigh* 😔 BTW, what program do you use for the animated parts of your videos?
I DO need to try those games, especially considering how they seem to deal with so many themes that interest me. Too many games, too little time. I do all my "photoshops" in Gimp. I use a drawing tablet, draw in that program with a transparent background, trace over what I drew, and export them all to my video editing software where I have them rapidly cycle between each other to give the appearance of squiggly lines

It's funny people freaked out over this. Not only is cyberpunk a single player game we've had the option to put our character in any clothes, have any hair style, or any vice in video games as far back as almost the first character creator.
Read Homage to Catalonia. Orwell was an irl insurrectionary anarcho-socialist. Also, anti-capitalism has been a part of the cyberpunk genre since Neuromancer
Pretty sure it was the CNT though revolutionary Catalonia was very much a coalition force between various anarchist and socialist. Orwell himself was more sympathetic towards socialism. The specifics of his politics shifted a lot throughout his life but anti-authoritarianism seems to be the main consistency.
You might enjoy a movie called Equilibrium. Christian Bale plays an enforcer in a dystopian future, one devoid of emotions. It’s a little more cathartic than 1984.
It's just a shame that the _real_ questions surrounding enhanced humans weren't even asked in this game. I was actually paying attention to the lore, and cyberpsychosis seemed like an interesting mechanic that could've played a part in the game. It implied that you _could_ teeter over the edge and lose your humanity. You can certainly play that way, but it's still ultimately a decision you're never aware of. V slaughters legions of gangsters and corporate lackeys, and wakes up with a clear conscious because "that's just Night City". There's never a moment of reflection where you look in the mirror and hate what's staring back. Maybe that'd be too blatant? I guess to do something like that right, they'd have to lean into power fantasy. In a single-player open world RPG game, who'da thunk it? But it's hard to make you feel bad about killing people who were going to kill _you,_ just because you're bigger than them. There's never any reason to actually hurt non-hostile NPCs, either, and that's the only time being a monster is really punished by the game. It's never done subtly; shoot a good'un, and you get a star. Get five and you become NCPD's most wanted for a little while, until the police force's ADHD kicks in and they forget you existed. Typical GTA rules. Typical GTA game. No, the real "big question" posed by Cyberpunk is pretty blatant. Does ctrl+c, ctrl+v humans bad? It never even got me thinking about the question because there's never an instance where that kind of tech _isn't_ abused. It was used to allow the Arasaka CEO to survive his own murder, to keep their loyal servants backed up for reuse, to keep Johnny alive just to torture him. I'm guessing (based off the Nomad start) the CEO was planning to implant Johnny into some kind of house-pet. It's not off the table. For all the promise of extensive customization, there's less options than New Vegas's character creator. And unlike those games, where you can at least find the occasional barber, V's appearance is fixed. Can't style your hair. Can't change your physical appearance, even though the cybermods on your face make it seem like you _did,_ at least prior to the game starting. It's certainly something that _could_ have been in the game.

The only quest in the game that even comes close to saying or asking something interesting in my opinion is the Peralez side quest where you find out (spoiler ig) his thoughts are secretly being influenced by a mysterious third-party. My only hope is Phantom Liberty brings more of this to the table, but I'm not exactly holding my breath, honestly.

I was gonna type this comment on the first day this vid was posted but I held off and collected my thoughts a bit
I feel when people say “don’t politicize video games” the don’t mean it word for word.
The actual cry seems to me to be "Keep making FUN X games, what you showed us looks to be full of fanservice that isn't for your fans."
TL:DR communist undertale is a poor choice for a mainline doom game, instead make fun doom games.

TLDR
1. 1984 teaches wrong lesson

PS being communist is cool and good actually xoxoxo your fellow food-based video essayist
They essentially list homelessness statistics, crime rates, and the line, "America's fucked, and I don't know what we're gonna do."
Obviously, very relevant themes. I hope they run with it, and explore them. I do fear it will just be at a Grand Theft Auto level, where they just sorta point out things that are obviously shitty, and say that, yes, they ARE shitty.

Another banger video. Everything you produce inspires me, I’m glad I found this channel.
Having dealt with wolf crying from a current movement making it hard to expose real stories of grooming and allegations of legitimate evil misconduct. This video is a big mood.
*thinks about gostoc stomping on godrick and me then instantly ganking him*
“huh, cobbler had a point in his cyberpunk video, didn’t he?”
I just wish Deus Ex caught on as much as 2077 since it’s the Grandfather of Cyberpunk games. Now we have half of a prequel that’ll never be finished. *Sigh* 😔
BTW, what program do you use for the animated parts of your videos?
I DO need to try those games, especially considering how they seem to deal with so many themes that interest me. Too many games, too little time.
I do all my "photoshops" in Gimp. I use a drawing tablet, draw in that program with a transparent background, trace over what I drew, and export them all to my video editing software where I have them rapidly cycle between each other to give the appearance of squiggly lines
Patrolling the Mojave makes me wish for a gep gun
The centrism... Disturbs me
"You know what you should both read? 1984"
That particular line did not age too well...
wait, why?
How so?
@@lilbananaman because people have gotten into the habit of associating any government or social media measure they don't like with the book 1984 these past few months
@@imransadovic3600 People have been doing that since 1984 came out, it's not a recent phenomenon.
@@AlwaysSomeone well there's been a recent spike at least
It's funny people freaked out over this. Not only is cyberpunk a single player game we've had the option to put our character in any clothes, have any hair style, or any vice in video games as far back as almost the first character creator.
Read Homage to Catalonia. Orwell was an irl insurrectionary anarcho-socialist. Also, anti-capitalism has been a part of the cyberpunk genre since Neuromancer
Was he an Anarchist? I thought he fought with a different group in Spain than the CNT? Like, not Soviets but not Anarchist either... I forget.

I’m so glad you brought up “the two minute hate”. I’ve always thought it was the most relevant idea in the entire book.
I'm amazed to see how few people see orwell is projecting in the 2 minutes of hate.
There’s so many things they could’ve done in this game, and it’s clear that they didn’t have enough time/manpower to accomplish them.
netflix's cyberpunk edgerunner series does that, kinda
@@btchiaintkidding7837 In the words of RedLetterMedia: I ain't reading no books, or playing no video games, to understand the deep lore of Star Wars. If it ain't in the movie, it don't count.
Edgerunners shouldn't be considered mandatory viewing for understanding the game's lore. Also, I'm pretty sure my comment was made before Edgerunners was even a thing. If not, see above.
I enjoy the characters a great deal but the world seems disappointingly toothless for what could have been one of the most damning indictments of technocracy run amok in fiction.
Showing the dog: bad
Going for the dong: good
' All issues are political issues, and politics itself is a mass of lies, evasions, folly, hatred and schizophrenia.” - George Orwell
"Cyberpunk 2077 has been ready for a year now," lol no it wasn't ready
7:45 - Was that really your sub count then? Wow, great work, in less than a year you added entire digits! Massive props!
Is that the ost of McGee's Alice at 3:10?
I love this channel, good find. Have a lot interests in common, the seinfeld theme song in the start is 10/10
missed opportunity to call it "cyberjunk" instead of cyberdong
I've seen like 15 of these videos in the past week. Love the content, mang.
Too bad the game didn’t feel like it really embraced this too much in relation to gameplay. Honestly was really disappointed by the utilization of the augmentation system.
This aged . . .VERY WELL
How?
Yep, I would have liked to see them using their time in the spotlight to say something that would make me go wow such art.. All of the depth that I found in 2077's Night City is strongly overshadowed by crappy development management and crappy gameplay mechanincs.
well they did make a mission about a cyberdong in the end
also, i really love your films
The ammount of sense and logic in your video gives me hope for humanity.
Cobbler bro.....this is fucking amazing. Dude.....for real......more shit like this please. Maybe a channel covering modern events. Dude I’d watch the fuck out that
George Orwell was a communist, 1984 was in protest of the authoritarian left. he fought in the Spanish civil war for the anarcho-communists in Catalonia against fascism. "the only regime which, in the long run, will dare to permit freedom of speech is a Socialist regime. If Fascism triumphs I am finished as a writer-that is to say, finished in my only effective capacity. That of itself would be a sufficient reason for joining a Socialist party" - Orwell, 1938

Fantastic video! Unsubscribed.
Hell yes, finally someone talking about how cool the ramifications of easily accessible human modification could be to a video game world. Hell really any story world.
Is "the feed" the YA version of "1984" ?
"I can go anywhere and do anything in real life and real life sucks" preach peach!!
I’ll never buy a video game based on advertising again! Praise Elden ring however!
