This is probably the best song that they never released. It's maybe too good for this world. I'm glad it's a little secret between us and them.
I've been a die-hard U2 fan for a little over 40 years... and this song... without question... is one of my all-time top 10 favorites.

Beautiful and one of the best U2 songs. This leaked right after HTDAAB came out by fans or even by U2 themselves. I am so thankful we have had this song for so long. I kept hoping it would find itself on an Best of U2 2000-2010 collection. It deserves a place on that album and this original version. Thank you Igor for the remastered update. It sounds glorious.
I heard it live a few Times - totaly underated.
They didn’t even properly release this. Imagine walking out of a studio and then not making this your next record. What a band.

Have you heard Nuno Moreira’s recording of them performing a demo of The Little Things That Give You Away in 2015? Fascinating how this song turned into that one. . . This one is far superior though. Cannot fathom how they haven’t released this.

It is sad that this track was never released. It's fair to assume that Bono probably had a theological trilogy in mind st this point: "Grace" on ATYCLB, "Mercy" on HTDAAB, and "Peace" on what became NLOTH.
HTDAAB was such a strong album, since then U2 have had some moments here and there but as a complete album it's their last truly great work.

U2 are one of the strangest bands never to have promoted some brilliant songs they've done. Always and Summer Rain are brilliant B-sides on one of the ATYCLB singles. Both were easily good enough to be singles, never mind album tracks. Their adaptation of Greg Lake's Father Christmas is really special, too, but it didn't appear to receive any promotion at the time. Perhaps they were embarrassed about cashing in on a Christmas hit. But, to have STILL not released this superior version of Mercy, anywhere, and after all this time, is perversely eccentric, if you ask me. I guess there's still time.
