Thank you from the bottom of my heart! We are all self-taught to a certain degree. Internal desire is required to stay focused and learn this skill! So glad to help! Thanks again! Happy Turning!
Thank you, Roger and welcome! Enjoy the whole process. Remember; persistent, patient practice will yield the bowls you imagine creating! Happy Turning!
Wow, Kent. Thank you so much for putting out these great videos. I'm 17 years old and finding your videos an awesome resource to teach myself how to turn bowls. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your knowledge with us!
Kent I'm very new to turning and I know I lack good technique. This video has helped me so much and I thank you very much for taking all the time and trouble to put it together and share it with us. Thanks again from the UK.
I have struggled to be proficient in turning bowls I found your U Tube channel. I have watched a few of your videos and LEARNED a lot and gotten better at turning. Trust me I will watch more of them, and rewatch to make myself a better turner. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills.
I took shop and woodworking in school a long time ago and I can’t believe my memory has done. When I first started back into turning, the very first time I caught this channel and saw Kent, I really thought he was my “back in the day” woodworking teacher! My shop teachers name was Mr.Abee. If these two were standing together, you would think they were brothers, if not twins. Crazy huh? As I got to thinking about it, being that I’m 50yrs old and that would have made him oh, idk, around 90+yrs old….lol. Anyway, as I began to get into turning again, damn near EVERYTHING I had learned 35yrs ago, give or take, kept coming back like I was sitting in class that very moment. I know there are times I can’t remember where I put my car keys or even the job location I was at the day before!? So for me to slip right back in time, memories were feeling more like starting from scratch. I too agree with a lot of people that talk about how they love Kents way of explaining things with great details in order to really learn quickly and efficiently. This tutorial about using the gouges properly were spot on and detailed. It started coming back to me and I think I may have understood the subject matter better than my days of shop in school. There were also some things I wasn’t familiar about and picked up that knowledge and was able to fully understand and was able to remember those new things due to the detailed teaching he is able to give you. Being all that said, I recommend anyone, on any subject, at any level of woodworking you may be. If you are serious about wood turning and need that “ next level “ teachings, again on any level and subject matter. This IS THE BEST channel related to wood turning you will ever need……PERIOD !
I'm a newbie who has been confused about riding the bevel since I began. This video-demonstrating the value of keeping the bevel parallel to the cutting surface-has made all the difference in the world. Thank you, thank you. I look forward to viewing all your videos. You are a fine instructor!
A little background .. I took a turning class last year and the instructor was exceptionally good. However I was called away an hour before class was done to respond to a flood in my town. After 20 hours and 63 rescues later I made it back to my shop and found every tool was underwater and the building had to be torn down. I’ve since rebuilt in higher location but the knowledge didn’t stay with me from the class. I want to thank you for what you have done here. For without your videos I probably wouldn’t be able to start turning. Your style is perfect and it has made a difference in my life thanks .
I am very grateful for your videos. The way you explain how the tool works as well as how the others parts in the process connect together is very descriptive and easy to understand. The only thing left for my to do is practice following your advices. Thank again
Thank you very much! You might like my online courses over at TurnAWoodBowl.com they are even easier and will have you up and turning in no time. Thanks and Happy Turning!
Kent, I watched this video a few times. Slowly I started to use the knowledge you demonstrated. Now I can make cuts so smooth that I don't even need sandpaper. I'm in woodturners heaven. Riding the bevel has completely changed my work. I can't thank you enough.
before I found your channel I thought an in person day's instruction was mandatory. I am glad I did it but I am learning far, far more from your highly detailed videos. many, many thanks
Thanks much, Kent! Finally I understand what that phrase means. Great camera work, too. Exactly the right angles and presentation to illustrate. Well done, sir!
Kent, you are an EXCELLENT TEACHER! The combination of slow logical explanation, supported by great camera work made all the difference for me! I think I finally GET IT! Thank You from the mountains of the Philippines...
Nice, simple, explanation. It took me a bit to figure out what riding the bevel meant until I found your website. This video would have made it even easier to learn.
thats the first time I have actually been shown and now understand riding the bevel and I have been trying to turn for 2 years now. Thank you so much for this great demonstation, cheers
G'day Kent. Thanks for this video teaching about riding the bevel. now I know why I get lots of lines and how to correct this. I have recently bought 2 bowl gouges and have bought a tormek sharpening center which is near the lathe. I am so glad I bought a cover for it as I get shavings all over it. It has a water cooled stone and also I am learning how to use it too, also I now know why they put a packet of band aids in the parcel when it comes. I learned to never touch the blades just after sharpening. You are a fantastic teacher of this craft and I appreciate what you are doing very much. I hope you do well with your channel and I wish you all the very best possible with it.
William, Thank you for all your kind words. I hope you enjoy the whole turning process and see the bowls you are imagining soon. All the best to you and Happy Turning! Kent
Thank you, great video and accompanying piece on your web site. I finally know what the bevel actually is now. The bit about the bevel being a fence was excellent.
Hello bro, I learn a lot from you today new things regarding gauge shapes , thank you very much for teaching us, am from tiny ZANZIBAR ISLANDS, EAST AFRICA , I hope to learn more n more from you , thank you
Thank you! I have just started bowl turning and my poor instructor was not getting through to me on how to use the bowl gouge so she sent me this link. So hopefully tomorrow I can make progress!
I love that you are also turning in crocks with socks. I just dedicated a pair of sneakers to the task; got tired of having crocks full of wood shavings and sawdust :) Great videos, well done, I've learned a lot; though having self-taught wrong (using spindle tools of all sorts for bowl turning) my bowl gouge and I are still going through an adjustment period. This video helped a lot, thank you!
I am a beginner and this was exactly what I needed. I could not figure out why some cuts were great while others kicked back. Cannot wait to do it the right way!
Thank you Kent! All the things I am doing incorrectly (well most) all in one video. The kickback on introducing the gouge, introducing it slightly open.... What a noob. Now I've seen this i have zero excuses.
Kent, I just watched this excellent video on the proper use of lathe tools and the importance of "riding the bevel'. You are a master teacher and make the craft fo bowl turning easy to understand. Blessings to you.
Kent, I have never done any wood turning but have now ordered a lathe etc. There are no clubs near me in England so I have been watching your videos. This one and the other about bevel angles have helped my understanding a lot. I am now not so nervous about trying for the first time. Many thanks, Jim.
Wonderful Jim. Yes, no need to be nervous. Be alert and aware, but not nervous. Check out my courses for quick skill building www.TurnAWoodBowl.com/courses. All the best to you and Happy Turning! Kent
at about the 2:48 mark you reversed the lathe to turn the right way ..... smooth move 😂😂 all silliness aside, damn good instructions for the gouge .... thanks for the knowledge
I have had my lathe for 3 months and my mentor told me ALWAYs ride the bevil. NOW, thanks to you , I know what the hxxx the bevel is and how to present it to the wood.
Good to hear, Gerald! Yeah, it can be hard to understand, especially if people say it like everyone is supposed to already know what they mean. "Just ride the bevel." LOL All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Kent, that was awesome! I’ve been turning for a few years and honestly just didn’t get what I was trying to achieve with the gouges. Your explanation about the fence brought it completely into focus for me! The up-close video shots were extremely helpful! Thanks for sharing this and the work you do!
Thank you again for an excellent tutorial. I've used carbide for a year, and now want to make cleaner finishing cuts. Your teaching methodology is on point.
Thank you, sir. I hope you get a chance to go through my Bowl Gouge Mastery course. I think you'll enjoy the knowledge and new skill sets. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
That is just the right information and the camera angle really helped, I had the situation where every time I engaged the gouge it started to skip backwards at me, spiraling a big nasty cut into my piece and scaring the life out of me. I think I need to take some blanks and just turn them into shavings...
Fantastic! I have probably watched hundreds of hours of videos on turning in an effort to better understand how to do it right and get better at using traditional turning tools instead of the carbide "easy-turn" tools I have been using. Your explanation of these techniques is by far the best I have ever seen. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Keep up the good work.
Again, a very helpful video. AND, a most important side benefit, it emphasised that one needs to see the cutting operation clearly. So I went out and bought a little spotlight to brightly illuminate the work.
I have done spindle turning for several years and learned the art of "riding the bevel" on spindles. I want to turn bowls and your guide on riding the bevel is very helpful. Thanks for all you do to help us "newbies" learn bowl turning.
GREAT UP CLOSE VIDEO... I can't see close enough in my own work......... with a face shield, it's hard to see all that.. I finally got a smooth bottom of my bowl....several times practicing got it on a round blank....WONDERFUL...
I have been turning for exactly 23 days, watched a bunch of videos but this is the first time I heard this topic explained so well. I had actually become so frustrated that I put aside the bowl and spindle gouges and purchased carbide tool and they ain’t cheap. Thanks, I will watch for future videos
Wow! No one has been able to explain it this well. Can’t wait to put it into practice. I was guilty of using just the tip and trying to clean it up to no avail.
Very good .you would have been a very good wood shop teacher.kind of like richard raffin he just love to teach others .God bless you.keep up the good work
Very helpful close up and detailed explanation of the heel, the tip, and the bevel ... I've done a little trial and error and this illustration of presenting the tool to the wood is excellent, I look forward to developing better results .. many thanks!
I'm pretty new to turning and this was the best explanation I've had to bowl turning so far. Friend "Tim" from our turning club recommended this video to me. Loved it
You, sir, are one hell of an instructor. Thanks so much. We self-taught turners are in your debt.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart! We are all self-taught to a certain degree. Internal desire is required to stay focused and learn this skill! So glad to help! Thanks again! Happy Turning!
Agree
I couldn’t have said it better. Yes, thank you.
The illustration of the table saw fence and the bevel was an excellent example.... 👍👍
Very instructive. It took me a couple of times watching, but I now believe I understand “riding the bevel.” Thanks for your time and expertise.
I’m a visual learner. Nothing has helped me more on this subject then this video.
Fantastic, Alli. I'm so glad to help. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
There are instructors and then there is you. I learned more from your video than I did in the class I took at woodcraft.
Thank you kindly, Harry! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Agreed. I think bevel riding should be the first subject taught in turning 101. Woodcraft was fine but the instructor assumed we all knew about this.
Easily the best instructor on UA-cam. I learn a lot every minute he's talking and showing
Great point Bob. Thank you for writing and sharing!
Several cuts later and i finally convinced my self to go to yt and im glad i did
Welcome! Enjoy the whole process and be patient with yourself. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Total newbie. The narrative during close up camera views speaks into my mind. Thank You for sharing. I'll be watching and learning.
Thank you, Roger and welcome! Enjoy the whole process. Remember; persistent, patient practice will yield the bowls you imagine creating! Happy Turning!
By rewatching and practicing i believe it's sinking in... keep teaching, Kent
Fantastic, Debra! That's the idea. ;) All the best to you and Happy Turning!
This brief video was very helpful to me - the clarity of shots showing the angle of the bevel and cutting edge. Thanks
Stanley, thanks for sharing. I'm glad this connected with you!
I enjoy watching because you explain and do it in slow motion so it is much easier to understand
Best lesson , as a french woodturner I get the best English lesson at the same time ! thank you !
Wow, thank you! My pleasure, glad to help with turning and language. ;) All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Kent has an ability to explain complex things that demystify them - like no other!
Thank you kindly, Jack! Happy Turning!

I have watched a lot of turning video's, but this one is the very best about dealing with the bevel and how to get rid of tool marks.
Andy, thank you for writing this comment! Greatly appreciated!!!
I agree you have explained from the very beginning. Not a lot of beginner’s guide do this. I will be taking your lesson into my workshop. Thank you

Good video. This will help me figure out what I'm doing wrong. Keep up the great work.
Thanks, Michael. I'm glad this will help you!
That is just the right information and the camera angle really helped, I had the situation where every time I engaged the gouge it started to skip backwards at me, spiraling a big nasty cut into my piece and scaring the life out of me. I think I need to take some blanks and just turn them into shavings...
Thanks, I'm glad you appreciate the effort. Watch this video too ua-cam.com/video/IbjjbKcQmSU/v-deo.html All the best to you and Happy Turning!

Wow what a great video! You are a master in teaching! Thanks from Denmark.

Interesting comparison of a saw fence and the bevel. It works. Nice website.
Wow, thank you for your kindness. I'm thrilled to be able to help you learn and expand your possibilities! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Thank you sir. I enjoy the way you give instruction. You tell it then demonstrate and that helps a lot.
Again, a very helpful video. AND, a most important side benefit, it emphasised that one needs to see the cutting operation clearly. So I went out and bought a little spotlight to brightly illuminate the work.
Glad it was helpful! Yes, good light is SO important!!! Thanks!
I have done spindle turning for several years and learned the art of "riding the bevel" on spindles. I want to turn bowls and your guide on riding the bevel is very helpful. Thanks for all you do to help us "newbies" learn bowl turning.
