It was very unfortunate - such an absolute tragedy, that Cambodia had a ruler who was afflicted with that dreadful disease. Better to leave it as a mystery; then, now, and forever. This is both literal and metaphorical.

He was cursed, because he broke the vow that was extremely mandatory to be uphold and honored by all Khmer rulers; beginning with Jayavarman II. The ceremony on top of Phnom Kulen was not just a ceremony, but a karmic/soul contract that binded the entire Khmer race and nation to it, in order to be granted the permission and supremacy to ruled over the land (Kambuja-desa). When one conjures up the assistant of supernatural beings, one needs to offer one's soul in exchanged for power and glory. Nothing is free in this universe, everything has to be earned. 700 years of pain, sorrow, chaos, and absolute destruction, because that contract was breached and in addition to the karma that were inccured during the existence of the empire.

Jayavarman VII was very fond of circus shows and exotic animals. He had a 'zoo' of extremely rare animal collection from different parts of the world, that were given to him by foreign travelers, merchants, and emissaries. Various species of wild animals were domesticated, tamed as pets, and presented as gifts to different members of the royal family.
