Fun fact, in October 2024, Gary Barlow had a modest hit song in the US that went to #53 on the billboard hot100. He wrote the lead single, Running Wild, for Jin's (of legendary kpop boy band BTS) solo album Happy. It's all in English and sounds like a Take That song.
And then the same thing happens to Barlow and Williams when they released solo singles and getting set up as poppier Oasis vs Blur only to get bodied by the Spice Girls
Teen me would never believe that 40-year old me would be so invested in a Take That and Gary Bary Barlow/Robbie Williams video. Thank you so much for this. You do an amazing work.
I was just unbothered, either way. But they’ve had so many amazing songs between them, some of Robbie’s that seemed so corny have really stood the test of time too.

That's the mark of a good journalist/documentary maker - to get you interested and KEEP you interested in something you had no interest in before. Looking forward to the next ones... Thanks
Bravo. I disliked this era of British music. Always had a thing for Robbie’s solo career. Song writing wasn’t his thing so he used some of the best songwriters available.
This is a great example of how good this channel is because NORMALLY Trash Theory is covering acts I'm familiar with, but as an American Old I had NO IDEA who any of these people were and the story was still fascinating. A+!
Growing up in Germany in the 90s and 2000s, first Take That, then Robbie Williams were everywhere. It's funny to see how some huge European acts barely made a dent stateside.
It’s ironic that being an, let’s say, Eastern European kid in late 90s I was 100% sure that this band is from the states because all music was from there ahah
Barlow is an underappreciated songwriter. He has been consistently putting out high quality songs for over 3 decades. They're not super deep or musically challenging, but they always come with catchy melodies and a solid sense for groove. I especially adore "Never forget", it's an incredible song.
During his pre comeback slump Gary Barlow achieved quite a fame in Brazil since his work was being used to fill in soap opera scenes. Funny thing is that barely anyone knows or remembers who he is around here haha people often know the songs but not the face behind it. Thanks for this one, well put together

All music is important, and a lot of it that people sneer at is the catalyst for other things down the line! Thanks again Trash Theory, you’re the goat ❤
Yes! As one of those insufferable indie rock kids who came of age in 2005, "Back for Good" was my Roman Empire. I was, and still am, convinced that it is a deeply underrated (at least in America), near-perfect pop song. I will gladly put it next to "Dancing On My Own," "All Too Well," "The Killing Moon," and "Lovesong." It's just simple, good, and hits right where it needs to. Is it my favorite song? No. But it is a very good song that deserves a bit more respect.

When I heard that in the video, I was like "What the actual fuck?" What the fuck do you mean by "the fat one"? Never been a Take That (or a Robbie Williams, or a Gary Barlow) fan, but midway through this documentary I saw myself hating Robbie Williams' gut and joining Team Barlow. The peaceful ending was a nice surprise (yes, because since I never cared for them, I knew nothing about their history). Thank you, Trash Theory, for making such a pleasant viewing experience. This was time well spent.
Amazing video. Never in a million years would I have guessed I’d get teary eyed from a take that documentary, but here we are. Here in Sweden the aftermath was never really in the media after the breakup (or, I was far to young to notice).
I enjoy having old preconceptions blown away. This did that. Not gonna go dig into Take That’s back catalogue or anything but the recognition that someone has that ability to write something so seemingly simple but still difficult to do (or we’d all be doing it) is always a welcome reminder
Never was into this band, but damn if Trash Theory isn't always super interesting, making me care about music that never touched me. This channel is probably legit the absolute most top shelf music content on YT. Bravo!
"pink and yellow hell demon" = the most perfect description of Mr. Blobby ever! That thing gives me the heebie-jeebies. I never fancied Owen. It was always Gary Barlow or Jason Orange that tickled my fancy.
I've been a subscriber of yours for at least 5 years now. I love your videos on the more alt, underground, "Before X band" documentaries. I will be the first to admit I have no interest in pop music, but this documentary you just made was probably one of your best. Such a clean chronilogical telling of a tale of a band and 2 of its rival members and the ups and downs they followed. You didnt just provide the facts and the music, but you really told a story with this one. Well done my friend. Well done
The Circus is a masterpiece and one of the best albums of the 21th century. and this is coming from an underground post-rock, post-punk, post-metal guy who also loves pop and everything in between. a bit surreal to see Take That on this channel but they totally deserve it. they're of the my favourite bands ever
I'd agree, except to add that Progress is even better. I was a kid in the 90s and into metal and grunge and hip-hop so of course I scoffed at Take That but when I met my ex-wife she was a massive fan, and we spent our first summers together driving round the Yorkshire coast in her little Fiesta belting out songs from The Circus and Progress. Lovely days. You can't go back.
Take That are the only boyband i like and im not into that type of music lol, their comeback around 2005 and 2006 was great and showed that they actually had talent and were not just some good looking guys in a boyband
There is strangely a quite sizable fans of Take That who are also fans of metal/rock. I'm an alternative rock girl myself. Progress, being such an experimental album, reeled me in but now I am die hard for anything they do. And I do mean all of them. I also listen to Robbie, Gary, and Mark's solo stuff.
I really enjoyed watching this as a Take That fan (an American one at that, we do exist!) but do need to mention that “4 Minute Warning” was actually written by Mark Owen and Eliot Kennedy. Gary did collaborate with Mark on the writing of two of the tracks on In Your Own Time, the album that 4 Minute Warning was on (“If You Weren’t Leaving Me” and “Turn The Light On”) but he was not involved in the composition of “4 Minute Warning.”
0:16 ironic how The Ridge was the actual winner - just went and lived a quiet, comfortable life on the money he’d made, but happiness continued to elude George, who basically died of a broken heart still trying to fill the hole. 🕊️
As an American, ty introduced me to British music. This is how I figured out who's robbie Williams when his film was released. Seriously, no one talks about him.
People remember mid-90s music in the UK as Britpop, Spice Girls, and dance/club acts (and in my case, drum & bass), but if you went to any 18th, 21st or NYE party in a pub or social club during that period, you'd be guaranteed "Relight My Fire", "Never Forget" and later on, at the end of the night -"Back For Good".
40:17 i was so desperately looking forward to one direction having this moment, the older and wiser reconcilation, now we may get a version of that but it will never be complete. Im happy take that figured it out in time.
As a child of the early 2000’s I grew up in a house with a mum that is a Take That obsessive, so until about the age of 10 I don’t think I realised music other than Take That and Robbie Williams actually existed. I’ve been to see them live with her twice now and their live shows are always spectacular, however my favourite member will always be Mark, definitely the morrisons adverts ingrained in my brain that’s caused that
Being throughly invested in and entertained by a documentary about a band you didn't even like really shows the level of filmmaking. Awesome edition. Thank you for the work and talent you put into these.🙏✨
This is an impressive piece of work. Well done! I’ve always been a Robbie girl but the collapse of Gary’s career in the late-90s is fascinating to me - a combination of burnout, poor management, and some particularly unlucky decisions about press.
Robbie the youngest now looks the oldest, I liked Take That with or without Robbie and like Robbie with or without Take That, it's all great shows and pop :)
Listen, I mean, I'm cool. I have credible taste. I like jazz. I like Led Zeppelin. I've seen Jane's Addiction live. My Dad brought me to Steely Dan in 1995. But I won't hear a bad word said about Back for Good. It is a nailed on classic song, every day of the week. Fantastic songwriting. I was young in the 90s, and I remember the derision that everyone directed at my older cousin because she liked Take That. But looking back now, to think that there was a boy band with a songwriter who could come up with this 🤯
Well I think the break up again wasn't that smooth because at the end of the day Robbie is Robbie and drove some of them crazy. Then Jason Orange decided he'd had enough and left the band and vanished from public life and the remaining Trio got in trouble for tax evasion or something. But the music has always been great.
as an american and former (?) directioner, I loveee to research the bands that came before 1D, but I found take that's history a bit daunting (don't know why!). so thank you for talking about them!! I've finally started giving them a listen! and their first album is so good-- I love that late 80's - early 90's pop stock aiken waterman-y sound.
I was born in 1998 and too young to know TT in the 90s. I discovered them when my Mum who liked them quite a bit played the Beautiful World album a lot in the car on holidays down to France. Patience really touched me, as well as songs Reach Out and Beautiful World. Ngl boybands are not my thing but I loved this video all the same. Loved learning Gary was inspired by Depeche Mode, their 80s period I can see how that was a big influence on TT. If anything it’s given me newfound respect for Robbie a bit, who I never used to like after my Mum once told me a long time ago he was a big showoff. It was only about 5-6 years ago that I discovered he suffered from really bad mental health issues, and it made me see him in a different light, and now I respect him loads as a great pop star. Appreciate all you do to make great music docs!
Uh, he's not gay. He's a great ally, but he's been married to his wife for many years now and has kids. He was also engaged a long time ago to Nicole Appleton. But he's certainly been through an awful lot.
Can always trust you to talk about music with such respect. I did click on this one with trepidation (TT were my childhood), but your obvious love of all types of music just shone through. Loved this.
Rather edutaining as usual! I didn't know Take That's earlier back story. Full disclosure though a lot of these songs and groups were/are shambolic in this piece! I can sing "Back For Good" fairly well on a good day btw:-0
The irony of Gary Barlow supposedly being the least popular member of Take That is that there would never have been a successful Take That without his voice and his songs. He was the “center piece” Martin-Smith built the band around. Nigel also created/amped up the jealousy dynamic by treating Gary like the golden boy and building up his ego while actively tearing Rob down.(Even though he now claims Robbie was always his favorite…🧐 Recollections may vary 😂) I also think it’s interesting that Mark Owen was a solo success after Take That way before Barlow or Williams. Anyway, I prefer TT after their reunion. That’s their best era, I think.
I'm not even a Take That fan like that but their reunion is so sweet and makes me respect all of them more. The way they realised how they could be more than just a group of random boys put together as a product and then went for it even though they left on unfavorable terms earlier. Takes guts and maturity.
I was a kid as I lived through the final phase of Take That at the end of the 90s, and remember not believing my fucking eyes and ears when they came back with Patience. And then as an older teen and young adult, getting genuinely excited and feeling happy that Gary and Robbie did that Shame duet together, and then Robbie rejoining!! Trash Theory has been one of my favourite channels for ages, this content is what I live for
As a kid, i loved robbie, he lyrics were funny to me, unknowing their meaning. As an adult, i can see how that 1st album didnt do so good, but i appreciate him a lot still :)
idk who will read this but i find these videos so entertaining and so nice to watch. Like these little documents, i live for it. Keep it up Trash Theory, never stop.
Your videos are always exceptional. For me, I was always a Robbie fan. In fact, I can remember seeing him do the Beatles medley while in Take That and wondering how he would sound if he did a more britpop style..
I don’t think it’s fair to involve Wham! in any kind of comparison here… George and Andrew always loved and supported each other, and George’s talent far exceeded either of these dudes.
'What a nice video, shedding light to that early era! Can definitely appreciate now everyone's point of views and actions. "Want you back" is such a power song, it gets you somehow. Gonna listen 2mrw some of their albums!
I've been a Robbie fan since I heard Millennium (into No Regrets and Strong), immediately going back to catch up on Life thru a Lens (where I recognized Angels and Let Me Entertain You). I was probably too young (and too not British) to really be aware of Take That during their first run... but this video did remind me of the New Kids on the Block memories I have from MTV, thanks to my older sister. The two Take That songs that occupy any real space in my brain are Back for Good (of course) and The Food, but now I feel like I should give some more of their stuff a listen. I also need to go back through this video and remind myself of a bunch of pop classics presented throughout. A lot them triggered my nostalgia.
You’re my favorite. 😂 You are a truly great story teller. As a Yank who is older, I’ve literally never heard of them. But I couldn’t stop listening to their history. Keep sharing your love of music with us.
First off this is yet another great Trash Theory video. But the moments of greatest joy for me while watching this were the moments i recognized from Star Stories that were hilarious but this time put into their proper context. Even though i was never a big fan of Take That or any other boy band for that much their enduring fame against the odds is truly remarkable. They outlasted new kids on the block - the boy band Nigel Marten Smith based them on as well as countless others. I may not be a fan of their music but i can definitely respect what they have achieved. And big respect to the writers of Star Stories who managed to mine comedy gold from the true stories of public figures like Take That
It's interesting that Take That was supposed to be a British version of New Kids. New Kids themselves were the white American version of boy band New Edition. To add, when I see what the UK boy bands were doing vs some of the male vocal groups in US, I get why they didn't take. Take That was pushing music in 91' the same time groups like Jodeci were becoming popular.
I lived in Asia and learned about Take That a little late, when they came out with Back for Good. They felt a bit mature for a boyband but the song was amazing. Tho I wasn't super into them, I was Team Barlow all the way because of how much I didn't like Robbie Williams. He was braggadocious, so ungracious, rude, and picking a fight with everyone. I'm glad they both faced their demons, made peace, and are friends again. I recently researched all their songs after hearing TT's song on Anora -- wow, I missed out on all their reunion hits! Progress is an amazing album.
Fantastic documentary as always. And "pink and yellow hell demon" had me howling, partly because it felt like vindication for The Magnus Protocol's inclusion of a genuinely unsettling (but still hilarious) horror parody of Mr. Blobby...! xD
I actually wept at the end of this. Its so sweet that they made up and got back together. And its awful that One Direction are never gonna have the chance to do that again
Fantastic video. Great writing, editing and presentation. Amazing work. One minor item of feedback, YT closed captions tend to block the titles used for clips in the video. Could the titles be moved up or down a little to avoid this?
The Williams/Barlow reconciliation was probably helped by the fact that Robbie Williams career was on a bit of a decline when Take That re-emerged. With a bit of humility and maturity over the nature of fame, it's probably easier now for them to accept that they can both be equally famous, in different ways.
I met Robbie Williams at the Hammer Museum in LA when they hosted John Grant. He was a great guy and was nice enough to surprise my wife who grew up idolizing him after the show. The best, so Team Robbie. lol
Gary Barlow also wrote the song ‘Running Wild’ for the debut album of Jin from BTS - so he’s definitely going to be rolling in royalties for years to come on that one. 😊💜💜💜
On top of all your regular brilliance, I did notice you had a clip of Blue going as you were saying the word "blueprint". Pure genius :D (also, I've always had a crush on Gary Barlow and thought he was by far the hottest, the early 2000s fat-shaming of anyone and everyone was appalling)
Every now and then I get people asking for a playlist of every song mentioned in my videos: Well here's a Spotify link for this one:

The level of research, both in written and video form, that goes into these videos is unreal. Another excellent video TT!
Wasn't that good. TOTP wasn't on a Thursday afternoon!
And it’s heavily leaning on Boybands Forever which was on the BBC before Xmas
You mean reading the Wikipedia article? Lol
@@dinzy14 And the fat dancer from take that was a quote by Liam Gallagher referring to Robbie post Glastonbury.
I second of the video he calls wham a boy band. Totally incorrect
It's utterly hilarious that Mr. Blobby beat them out for the #1 spot on the UK charts at the end of 1993.
We have Simon Cowell to thank for the Blobby's music career. Just a hint at the sort of acts that he'd give us.
The British public love a novelty song

That is the story as Gary tells it, but I know are few fans who had them who say it wasn’t specifically Gary - it was ‘but 4 and get the 5th free’.

Strangely interesting comparison
I remember very well how Gary was singled out as the "fat member" of Take That.
There were quite a few Take Fat jokes in the headlines at the time...
Heard Barlow mentioning 'Back for Pud'. Except I realised how good it would have been as a Weird Al parody title.
I remember those jokes... I even made a few of them, as an 11-12 year old irritated that my crushes were all obsessed with these "performing monkeys"!

I thought that "The other one" from wham had decided he had enough money to retire and marry a member of Bananarama 😉 Which for me is like, Fair Play!
Not just a member of Bananarama, but the sexiest woman in showbiz.
He's the most gracious guy... The Wham! documentary really showed what a class act he is.
Pretty sure he also did pretty well writing for other people and his Wham! writing royalties where the real money is
Never was into this band, but damn if Trash Theory isn't always super interesting, making me care about music that never touched me. This channel is probably legit the absolute most top shelf music content on YT. Bravo!
Thank you!!! I was really needing a video like this before seeing Better Man (I'm american)
You've never listened to punk in your life and probably listen to backstreet boys and Ricky Martin and are obsessed with take that!
@@inkasaraswati7625💯 agree
I really enjoyed watching this as a Take That fan (an American one at that, we do exist!) but do need to mention that “4 Minute Warning” was actually written by Mark Owen and Eliot Kennedy. Gary did collaborate with Mark on the writing of two of the tracks on In Your Own Time, the album that 4 Minute Warning was on (“If You Weren’t Leaving Me” and “Turn The Light On”) but he was not involved in the composition of “4 Minute Warning.”
Gary produced 4 Minute Warning. He says so in his autobiography. Elliott Kennedy is his writing partner.
It was credited to a pseudonym
I was more into rave and drum and bass. More respect for the pop music of the 1980’s and 1990’s.
This is amazing. The comment section is amazing. TT your amazing. This channel is a shining light.
40:17 i was so desperately looking forward to one direction having this moment, the older and wiser reconcilation, now we may get a version of that but it will never be complete. Im happy take that figured it out in time.
Am i the only one in the world that unironically thinks that their version of Relight my fire is still an absolute banger?
Nope, I love it!
just yesterday i was looking through your channel to see if you had any video related to take that, and here we are... today is my lucky day
As a child of the early 2000’s I grew up in a house with a mum that is a Take That obsessive, so until about the age of 10 I don’t think I realised music other than Take That and Robbie Williams actually existed.
Cocaine is a helluva drug
To be fair to him he has put his body through.....a lot!
Tough paper rounds in Stoke on Trent, and lots and lots of charlie
@@richardclarke1135 agreed, those Sunday supplements are crazy
Listen, I mean, I'm cool. I have credible taste. I like jazz. I like Led Zeppelin. I've seen Jane's Addiction live. My Dad brought me to Steely Dan in 1995. But I won't hear a bad word said about Back for Good. It is a nailed on classic song, every day of the week. Fantastic songwriting. I was young in the 90s, and I remember the derision that everyone directed at my older cousin because she liked Take That. But looking back now, to think that there was a boy band with a songwriter who could come up with this 🤯
Not knowing their story, the ending was a pleasant surprise.
IKR I went from, "Not really interested. I will probably quit this part way through," to shedding a tear at the end.
WTF Trash Theory?
Sad for a moment for Gary ... then a remember the royalties lol, he is good
Well I think the break up again wasn't that smooth because at the end of the day Robbie is Robbie and drove some of them crazy. Then Jason Orange decided he'd had enough and left the band and vanished from public life and the remaining Trio got in trouble for tax evasion or something. But the music has always been great.
One of your absolute best. ❤
as an american and former (?) directioner, I loveee to research the bands that came before 1D, but I found take that's history a bit daunting (don't know why!). so thank you for talking about them!! I've finally started giving them a listen! and their first album is so good-- I love that late 80's - early 90's pop stock aiken waterman-y sound.
my favourite is robbie. even though he is a self indulgent plonker. your videos are consistently brilliant. thank you.
@@j3hnyahl
I stand corrected then 😊
Can always trust you to talk about music with such respect. I did click on this one with trepidation (TT were my childhood), but your obvious love of all types of music just shone through. Loved this.
“hell demon” is a great way to describe Mr. Blobby
I think it is near impossible for me to pick either Gary or Robbie. Both are amazing in their own ways. It's really is a "both is good" situation.
You can tell how much work went into this. Well done.
Nigel also created/amped up the jealousy dynamic by treating Gary like the golden boy and building up his ego while actively tearing Rob down.(Even though he now claims Robbie was always his favorite…🧐 Recollections may vary 😂)
I also think it’s interesting that Mark Owen was a solo success after Take That way before Barlow or Williams.
I was not aware how much they covered from 70s disco, damn
That record exec should have been a NFL quarterback, managing to throw a tape out of the window in London and have it land on a desk in Manchester.
Every time I see your thumbnail it is so comforting. Thank you TT
Take that was super popular in south east Asia…and also Robbie Williams in the 90s
At one stage, Robbie Williams was absolutely huge on every contintent apart from North and Central America
@@D1SnrI was in Kuwait and I used to drop everything to watch Feel everytime it came on MTV
idk who will read this but i find these videos so entertaining and so nice to watch. Like these little documents, i live for it. Keep it up Trash Theory, never stop.
Great video as usual but I think Take That's best moment is Robbie "Bezing" onstage with Liam.
No one has shown up more often in New British Canon videos than Vince Clarke. He's the Velvet Underground of synth pop and new wave.
I'm a massive TT fan, and let me tell you my favourite one is Mark Owen: you don't know what an amazing songwriter he is ❤
Back For Good is that song I always hear on the radio and had no idea who sang it. I chalked it up to Backstreet Boys or NSync
Lovely Video, wish their was a clip from Love Love from the X-Men First Class OST.
You are a truly great story teller.
Blobby...! xD
Thank you so much for the work that you do on these videos, it's a good day when I get a notification that there is a new Trash Theory.
A little surprised the track Shine wasn't shown ..for me, that and Patience are their 2 best tunes ...
I've just recently found out that Shine was written for Robbie when he was facing deep depression.
oh i love this !! thank uuuu ♡
wow! loved listening to this sm! glad they all friends now. my fav is robbie! btw, better man movie is a masterpiece!
I actually wept at the end of this. Its so sweet that they made up and got back together. And its awful that One Direction are never gonna have the chance to do that again
Nice video as usual. It did stump me that you called "Babe" a "Hair-metal ballad" though. 😀
Always great watching, thank you for your work - I'm afraid to say ... not ... that Robbie was, is and always will be the best.
Amazing video, and even though the subjects are not in my wheelhouse, very touching- nice to see a somewhat happy ending.
I met Robbie Williams at the Hammer Museum in LA when they hosted John Grant. He was a great guy and was nice enough to surprise my wife who grew up idolizing him after the show. The best, so Team Robbie. lol
That's sweet, thanks for sharing!
Pure genius :D
(also, I've always had a crush on Gary Barlow and thought he was by far the hottest, the early 2000s fat-shaming of anyone and everyone was appalling)
Robbie won in the short term, but I think his mental health got him in the end.
We all remember Robbie Williams having a massive solo career, I didn’t remember Gary Barlow having more initial success 🧐
Btw, Barlow‘s second solo number 1 „Love won’t wait“ was written by Madonna.
Barlow is also now writing hit songs for KPop artists, he wrote Running Wild for BTS's Jin this year
Brilliant video, as usual.
