I think you are locked into a false framework of understanding based on feeling. Heroic action is not without reward; on the contrary, we take a risk based on the chance that we might get the biggest reward ever - of being labelled a hero! The hero gets the girl, and the privileges - that's big in evolutionary terms. Evolutionary psychology surely gives us the answer here. Psychology is, or should be, 'the study of'; though that seems to get forgotten. Have you read 'A New Theory of Evolution' by Sir Arthur Keith? He set out, long ago, the idea of 'ingroup' and 'outgroup' and the 'dual code of amity and enmity'. It surely isn't the job of a psychologist to decide what is 'good' and then set out to encourage it! It's his job to explore what seems to be, and why. The harsh fact is that what seems to be is a constant balance between groups (group selection is no longer the taboo that it was for decades) and between war and peace. There are reasons for that; we should not just ignore those reasons and try to make everything 'nice'. I'd be interested in your thoughts on this.
