Embracing Defeat

  • Defeat is an inevitable part of a competitive hobby like wargaming, but it doesn't have to be a negative experience. Win, lose or draw I enjoy playing with toy soldiers, spending time with my friends and learning new stuff in the process.

I’m mostly a solo wargamer and last night I got absolutely and utterly spanked by the game. The biggest and most crushing defeat I’ve experienced since I started with this ruleset. I loved every minute of it.

Hi Lee; I have always said that I far prefer losing a hard fought battle than winning a 'walkover'. A game that makes you think & is a great spectacle, along with the camaraderie & banter of the social aspect is what makes a great game - not the wining or losing.

Totally agree. That's exactly how my last game played. I lost, but I didn't mind because it really tested me, and I was in great company.

When I was young I could be a poor loser, but now all that matters is having a great time gaming with family and friends. Losing helps you learn to play the game better and usually comes with some funny stories as well - like when a formation containing your supreme commander comes under bombardment and he's the only casualty....

I take inspiration from my father. He once won a trophy from his golf club 'Most Jovial Golfer' as that was his golfing skill! Our group are more about narrative gaming and derive enjoyment from the outcomes of games whatever the result as long as the game tells a story and gives a plausible result. Makes expected defeat palatable.

Hi Lee , I enjoy the painting and preparation for games and frankly have no real need to win at all costs but prefer to enjoy the game. Unfortunately my only opponent takes winning very seriously and no game ends without swearing , slamming about and questions on whether rules allow me to do certain things. I am tending recently to play solo campaigns in order to avoid the situation 😂😂

If someone ties their enjoyment of a game to winning, they’re setting themselves up to be disappointed.
It certainly helps if there is a strong narrative element to a game so everyone enjoys the unfolding story. And an historical battle with a known outcome helps blunt the sting of losing if your ancient counterpart did too.

Hey Big Lee! Well... like most things in Life... we learn more from our failures than our successes! NO ONE likes to come out on the short end of the stick... but our HOBBY is a GAME and not the "Life & Death" real thing! The fun, the friendship, sharing similar interests, & learning together makes this HOBBY very attractive to me!

  • @KimKhan

I think for me it depends on how I lose. A bad die roll? The fates are fickle, nothing to get upset about. Did I make a tactical error, or the player saw an advantage and seized on it before I was aware of it? They were the better player that day, my day will come. Did the player exploit the rules, or brought with them a "meta build" they got online that there exist no reliable counter to?
That's difficult to swallow. And if the opponent is not a good sport about winning? Mmmmyeah, that does sour the loss.

I prefer to win, but the most important thing to me is having a good time. My last game, my newly painted TMWWBK's Cononial Army, got massacred, but it was a brilliant game with both of us having some brilliant and then diabolical dice rolls. The main thing for me was that we both had a brilliant time and laughed at our misfortune or celebrated each others success and then arranged another game for a couple of weeks' time. I would rather lose a game and have had fun in good company than win a game that the experience left me thinking I would have preferred visiting the dentist :)

Since I began pushing little chaps around the table in 1970 I have honestly lost count of wins and losses. As a youth I remember getting a bit peed off if I lost but I have definitely mellowed over the years. Nowadays, my criteria for a game starts with good company followed by an interesting and fun game and right down at the bottom is winning or losing. As others have said it's a hobby and you get out of it what you put in. After reading many blogs, batreps etc I have concluded that most wargamers tend to gravitate towards people of the same attitude and so a good time is usually had by all. I suppose that when I have a game with others I would call it social wargaming.

    • @MiniatureAdventuresTV
      @MiniatureAdventuresTV  6 місяців тому

For a short while I was a MiB for SJG, and one of the useful skills is being able to enjoy a game as long as the other person enjoyed it too, which may sound strange, but it colours my gaming. I want my opponent to enjoy the game, and winning or losing is not the goal, just the end result.

    Victory & Defeat.
Relative terms for me. As someone who mainly refight actual historical battles, I often find myself in assymetric struggles. Rarely were the two armies equal in history. So I frequently start a game knowing what the likely outcome will be. In these circumstances your yardstick should be, 'Did I do better than the actual commander?'... Did I manage to delay the superior numbers longer than he?.. Win a more complete victory than he? So, my first call is not, 'Did I win?'. It's different in a points based pick up game, of course, but that's not my favoured mode.

Both sides need to feel like it was theirs to loose. After that the outcome is down to the skill of the player and the luck of the dice. All sounds like a recipe for a great time to me.

Yes, often I da. For me it's because most players aren't really good losers. Therefore, the ending can be more exciting if I lose the game than coming into a confrontation with a player who can no longer win. (Checking the rules after and before every action, argueing over rules or abandon the game after a few turns are the sign for this.)
As a child I always played with my godmother and it took me years until I beat her at a board game. This is how you learn to play and lose.
But the worst are bad winners who then want to tell you everything you did wrong or are too openly enthusiastic about themselves and their genius.
By the way, I have the feeling that the YT algorithm was adjusted again at the beginning of March. My channel is down to 50% of usual clicks, while the amount of time viewers are watching has doubled. YT probably offered my videos to less fellows in my opinion. 🤔

What do you do when you believe this to be the case? Are they making an honest mistake because the rules are complex? Sometimes I hear players say about themselves 'Oh sorry I'm cheating' when they make a mistake. I find that very odd - cheating is pre-meditated, making an honest mistake isn't and depending on the complexity of the rules can happen often. What rules do you play - I would hazard a guess it might be Warhammer/40K or Bolt Action?
