As a German Pennsylvanian this song hits home
The Germans fought along side the union and helped in supplies
Problem is that we had funny translation problems in the supply counts-
My family was Pennsylvanian Dutch but we’re more modern Americans now, though I’ve decided to keep my family and states roots alive

Carl Schurz is one of the more famous German Americans I'd say that fought for the Union.
Originallyt a revolutionary who wanted to create a united Germany under a constitutional monarchy (1848 Revolutions), after its failure he moved to the US (and guess where? Wisconsin obviously)
And he served as a general in the Civil War
Please remember Peter Joseph Osterhaus. As a prussian lieutenant from Koblenz he changed sides and became a revolutionary in 1848. One year later he was one of the leaders of the revolution in Baden. As this uprising also failed he and his family settled down in the United States. During the Civil War he became a Brigadier General in the Union Army. His famous day came we he was one of the officers who led the soldiers to charge the rebels on Missionary Ridge and defeated the confederate army in the Battle of Chattanooga in 1864. After the war he entered the diplomatic service of the United States and in 1877 became an United States Consul in the Grand Duchy of Baden. It must have been very unpleasant for the Grand Duke when Osterhaus presented him his accreditation, the same man who had driven him out of his palace 28 years ago.

The Majority of the Union Army was made out of Immigrants. Most of them Were *German* and Irish.
The XI Corps of the Army of the Potomac was completely made out of German immigrants commanded by Franz Siegel. At the Battle of Chancellorsville they were famously surprised and routed from the field during Stonewall Jackson's famous flank attack. The XI Corps would later fight at Gettysburg and somewhat redeem themselves. They were later moved out west to fight in Tenessee.
25% of the Union army was made up of immigrants, most of whom were German or Irish.

@@DubABattery Nah. Prussia was only the eastern part of it, and it's own kingdom. At the time, there were a lot of German nations that formed a more or less loose unit. Prussia was the largest of them, but it was not the only German nation at the time.
Not sure if you can sing in Russian or not, but it always bugged me that there's not a Russian version of 55 Days in Peking, it's a good song I'm sure you've heard it. Even If you can't make a cover in a new language I'd love to see your version of it! Keep up the good sounds.

Okay one last comment and then I'm done. I grew up listening to this song and I have my Rebel Flag hanging. The state I'm from during the Civil war was not a pro union state. After the war a lot of Confederates from the south moved out here and built town's, ranches and more. Heck even today we still get a lot of people moving up here from The South and still Flying their Dixie Flags. When Dr Ludwig posted an English version of Die wacht am Rhein I liked it and enjoyed it and was surprised that he posted it. But I still prefer it in German first because it's the original version and so forth__. Seeing talented Germans playing Confederate stuff is quite fascinating. But with this Song my favorite is the original version. You are a good musician with lots of Talent.
