Find yourself a local company that refills propane bottles and buy your own bottles, most large hardware stores have them. The bottle exchanges leave much to be desired, and if you start out with your own new bottles you will always know your bottles are good. I can't count the number of times I bought refilled propane bottles at the local stores, only to find out that there was something wrong with it. Lots of the "exchange" bottles I've seen had quite a bit of rust under the bottom ring, or there was something wrong with the valve in some way. It usually cheaper in my area to have propane bottles refilled, rather than exchanging them, and when they're refilled for you, they are really full.

If you get decent solar set-up with a battery back-up, you can use an electric, cordless chainsaw (which are actually decent quality now). They can be charged and used as much as you want and are quiet. I installed enough solar to run my freezer, refrigerator and sump pump all the time and, on sunny days, can charge other stuff, like a chain saw, with no loss of power.

Part of my draw to going to electric vehicle or motorcycle... in my opinion the ultimate warm climate unit would be a 48v golf cart with a solar pannel on the roof.
I have about 17kwh of storage, and 10-15kwh daily solar generation

I store non-ethanol gasoline only. I normally use Sta-bil but have used Pri-G as well. Pri-G is a little mote expensive but it is also supposed to be a gasoline “ rejuvenator”. So if gas is old it will supposedly restore it. I store about 60% of my gasoline in plastic container and the rest in metal cans. I have not noticed any difference in performance. I have used non-ethanol fuel gas with stabilizer that was stored for 3 years NO PROBLEMS. I will be testing a can for 4 years next summer. The issue with ethanol fuel isn’t just with fuel lines but also corrosion of metal in the engine. Look up a video by UA-cam channel Project Farm where he does a compare/contrast between ethanol and non-ethanol fuel. Something else that I keep in my preps is octane booster and several type of carb/choke cleaners. A few years after SHTF bad gas might be our only option so having some octane booster and carb/choke cleaner may help in using the older gas. I do store several types and diameters of fuel line, in line fuel filters, and clamps too. Make sure you have spare nozzles/spouts for your gas cans as well.

I certainly agree with non Ethanol fuel. However I have kept a 5 gallon can of 10% Ethanol 87 octane for 3 years before use and used it on some test small engines with no issues, of course long term it's not a good idea but if it's your only option a little bit of Ethanol mixed fuel in a pinch has lasted way longer than I thought it would of.

PRI-G for gas or PRI-D for diesel are good for 5 years and then can be treated again. There are various octane levels for non-ethanol gas so read your manuals and store the appropriate one. I know the folks at Grindstone Ministries use the engineered fuels for their chainsaws in their disaster relief missions. They stated it rules out someone running a saw without adding the lube and the saws actually run better.

@@markchase5323 I store 91 octane non ethanol fuel in 55 gallon drums treated with Pri-G I have had it for 8 yrs I have 5 full drums. I decided to rotate it out and have run it in everything from weed eaters to my yukon xl with no problems. the fuel is kept in a shed on pallets and grounded with a 20' rod. every 2 years I add more Pri-G to rejuvenate the fuel. I also have a funnel that separates water from the fuel it cost me about 40 bucks but it works and was money well spent.

    • @jasonbusch3624
      @jasonbusch3624 Місяць тому +1

PRI-G is cheaper to use than Stabil because you only use 1/3oz for 5 gallons. Stabil is garbage and I quit using it 20 years ago. I had a gas waterpump that wouldn't start after 1-1/2 years. Drained it and added new Gas and it fired right up. I have over 96 carburetors on equipment in my garage. I don't have to worry if anything will start anymore. Most stuff can set 2 years and will fire up in 2 to 3 pulls.

I have a Stihl MS 261 and a MS 391. It takes 2 gallons of fuel mix to cut 7 cords of wood. I use the same Stihl oil he held up in the video. Keeping your chain sharp reduces the amount of fuel used. I use non-ethanol fuel with no stabilizer. I leave gas set in my saws, weed eater, and lawn mowers for the winter. Non-ethanol gas is what we had when I was a kid in the 70's. We never had problems leaving gas in machinery then and you won't now if you use non-ethanol gas. This helps with generators too, but I think a propane conversion would be good. A lot less mess with storage, plus it gives you another option in SHTF situations. You may be able to buy Propane but not gas or vice versa.

Thanks for the vid! Great subject matter nobody is talking about. A few points, the LP generators supposedly DO NOT last as long as the gasoline ones, cause of the lubricates in gas.. In MY area-Disgusta Ga., we have a gasoline pipeline which NUMEROUS oil companies tap into and truck out to Florida - North Carolina. if you are in the area, you can arrange to get a 55 gal drum of your favorite flavor. On MIXED GAS I have ALWAYS used 32 to 1 because I felt it gave GREATER lubrication to my 2cycle equipment. My chain saw might NOT cut as good, BUT they LAST MUCH LONGER. It IS getting HARDER to find MIX oil that ALLOWS you to mix at your desired rate. Most everything being sold is for 50 to 1, which TELLS ME they want me to BUY new equipment MORE often. I have had my blower and weed eater for over 20 years now. Thanks for the vid, NEW subscriber. m

The average person can only store enough gasoline for maybe a week or two if they’re lucky. There are going to be items and goods needed in a shtf that are simply going to run out. There will however be barter/black markets that would be more than happy to accept hard tangible assets like silver/gold. I’m well stocked on many essentials, but there are just some I can’t store in large quantities. Gold and silver have driven the bus for 6,000 years. And in the event of a collapse of any kind, they will continue to be currency.

Also, if you have a dirt bike, quad, etc, with a CLEAR PLASTIC fuel tank, be advised the new blended fuel with ethanol/oxygenators in it will decompose in the presence of sunlight within two weeks! Your engine will run, but it will GLUE your carburetor slide shut (or wide open, as happened to me). PAINT that damned tank to keep out the sunlight!! A tip from your friends in the Mojave desert. 😁

  • @thatguychris5654

The best fuel storage is rotation. My small homestead holds only 30 gallons of gas and I never add stabilizer, until something comes our way. Why? Because my personal vehicle uses about that much gas in a month and I fill it with the oldest cans (30 day old gas) and only fill up empty cans at the station, not the vehicle. So at any given time I have 30 fresh gallons. Should a storm be approaching or something worse, that's when I dump stabilizer to each can and ration it.
Fun fact: I had a generator with 2.5 year old regular ethanol gas with SeaFoam stabilzer still fire up on the first pull. Was an accident, not recommended, but in a pinch, at least I know that brand works lol

If you can work on engines and can make a wood still with ample supply of wood, you will never need gasoline again.
A propane gen can be adjusted to run off of wood gas (or methane if you have a biodigester)
A gasoline gen can be adjusted to run methanol (condensed liquid wood gas). Even though methanol has 1/4 the BTUs of gasoline, a near infinite source is nothing to sneeze at.

Lots of lead acid batteries for home, a powerful inverter, powerful lithium electric tools, and production or homemade electric vehicles like quads? And keeping the lithium stuff in a fireproof place, in case they do ignite, even when you baby them?

Just replaced my gas bike with a good e-bike, and treat every shift of my delivery job, like I'm on a space mission. Managing power & decisions, so it dosen't die far from home. Doomsday Prepping with EVs, it's great to have spare motors, controllers, bearings, cables, and battery packs sitting in storage at 50%. EVs are very low maintaince, you only really have to worry about the tires and brakes. I want to phase out brake pads for Regenerative Braking, then the only thing I have to worry about are the bearings of the motors, steering, and suspension. I won't have to service the motors or battery pack for years, and can just swap parts out, and use the fresh ones, while I rebuild the old ones at my own pace.
EVs are grest for around home, especially when you can just do a quick battery swap, to not have to wait for one battery to charge. But for long road trips, or sustained riding, a Series Hybrid would be the best option. The stealth, instant torque, and low maintenance of electric, but the convenience of fuel, the engine is kept at it's most powerful or most efficient RPM, and their is no transmission gear shifts to fumble over, no clutch to burn out. You can buy or make something like the Baltmotors Bulldog.
Be it pure electric, or a series hybrid with a generator that can extend the battery range, or work with the battery to power whatever in an emergency. Either way, I'm done with engine only tools & vehicles.

I havnt used gas chain saws in a good while - ill use one of my husq if a log is larger than 20 inches -
Ive found that i can cut up to a truck load or 6 cords of wood with even a cheap harbor freighr 9 amp chain saw - with out the chain streching all the way out or the plastic drive gear striping out -
I started using the 14 amp electric chain saw harbor freight sell last yr -
With the 9 amp a 2 kw gen works out well -
With the 9 amp as long as you dont press down hard on it the plastic drive gear will last through a ton of wood -
With my husq after a full day of cutting the chain is streched and i have to take a link out then it will last another day -
With electric saw with a drive gear the chain travel is slow so chains dont strech as much -
So one chain can last through 6 cords of wood - by that time the chiseled has been filed so many times that they start braking off -
Harbor freight. Does not sell chains for them in the store and just say get the extended warenty -
So i get the extended warrenty and when the chain.wares out after 9 or 10 months of cutting i bring the saw back and they give me a refund -
Ill just get another saw and buy a new one yr replacement warranty - then continue cutting -
I just started using the 14 amp harbor freight it requires a 4 kw generator -
With the 9 anp if you put two 10 amp 400 piv diodes in line it will drop the power in half -
Sence it runs slower it just does not ware the plastic drive gear oit or the chain - ive been using a harbor freight electric saw that i added diodes to for over 10 yrs now with the original chain -
My hot watee heater burns on wood and i also cook on a open fire often -
I live in the deep south and most winter it never gets below 15° - last yr i cut a bunch of 1 ft wide oak logs -
That cheap saw did fine - you can get chains and files off the net dirt cheap -

I run ethanol free, (clear gas) 87 octane in all my vehicles and I have it stored in plastic 5-gallon containers. I used it on my last power outage and that fuel was stored for 5+ years and the fuel looked and acted normal in every way except for a very, very, ever so slight amber tint to it, you only see the tint when comparing it to fresh fuel and that could be due to different refinery mixtures. I used it in my generator and the balance in my lawnmower with no issues. Power output seemed normal, engine ran smooth. I would not hesitate to pour 5 year old properly stored ethanol free gas in any of my good vehicles if I needed to. I live in a cooler climate and the 5-gallon containers are filled almost to the top with as little air in the container as possible. I do try to rotate my old fuel but got lazy and thus the 5+ year old fuel.

Good info. I knew about real gas because we have a Harley, but didn't know to use it in small motors. Another thing you really need to do is keep your saw blades sharp. Many years ago I cut a board with a new hand saw. Later I noticed a man checking the saw. He had noticed how I cut it easy. He thought it was the saw and not how strong this woman was. LOL

I have has gas in cars that has been in them for 4-5 years, and still works great, even tho I hear gas is only good for 3-6 months.
I had a off grid shack at one time, and used PRI-G in several barrels of gas, and always ended up with some liquid in the bottom, that looked like something was separating after a couple years. Might have been water from the drums getting hot and then cold and sucked in moisture which settled in the bottom not sure.
I lived off of generator power, and went thru a lot of them. The cheap Chinese lasted just as long as name brand, about a year. Might have lasted longer, but got tired of changing oil every couple weeks. The one thing I found that was a must, is to filter the gas. I used a coffee filter stuffed into the neck of the gas tank.. gas that you think might be clean sometimes has trash in it, especially gas containers that are filled a lot.

Treated with label doses of Stabil and Gumout carb cleaner, no issues in 14 years. 10 to 15 gals get rotated every month w/ super siphon. Both generators have been converted to tri-fuel carbs. We have a bunch of pp tanks that I traded at Walmart with free old style tanks, using a free add in Craigs List. Everyone of those has 15 lbs. You didn't speak on longevity of storing fuels other than Stabil. Anything more than 3 months for regular ethanol laden fuel, or one year for non-ethanol fuel and you are taking your chances, even with fuel stabilizers. Never leave the 10% ethanol fuel in your carbureted machines unless you use.them regularly. Diesel fuel will store safely for many years with the proper additives and protected from moisture, and propane is generally considered to be immune from storage issues unless of course you develop a small leak which you might be unaware of.

To Add to this, 40 Volt Chainsaws are a Nice investment to have. Excellent for keeping in a vehicle to clear things off roads n so on. They can be pricey, But I've found the ones from HART to be Very reliable and durable. The 6amp batteries are ideal & give more cutting torque, But the 4amp work fine as well for smaller jobs. They are Very Good with Warranty stuff as well, I have multiple mowers, chainsaws & hand tools like impact gun, drills, 40 volt power inverter, 20 volt Fan , vacuum, weed Wacker, leaf blower to name some. Very good option if you have a Fuel/propane or Solar based system to recharge the batteries.. I have Gas saws as well & other fuel based tools, Electric is Not a 100% Replacement But it does have a place. Variety is the key to surviving. Don't be locked into a single system for survival.

I have four year old 87 pump gas sitting in 55gal drums. I bought during Covid. Runs my zero turn and my 2018 f150 without any issues. Ethanol doesn’t go “bad”. Does your vodka go “bad” in the glass bottle? No. It pulls moisture from the air and that’s the issue. Plastic cans are short term storage only unless it’s diesel. The light petroleum chains can and does permeate through the plastic and you’re left with “bad gas”. It’s not bad, it just doesn’t burn as easily as that’s what the light petroleum does. Set the heavier petroleum on fire. It’s why diesel will burn in a gasoline engine when mixed with gas. So don’t throw it away, mix it with fresh gas in a 10-1 new to old and use it up.
Metal containers only, do not open them unless necessary and keep them in a cool dry place and the fuel will last waaay longer.

A few years ago I would have dismissed the 16" electric as a toy or a shaving tool but I use it more now than the 36" Stihl. Lot less seasonal maintenance on the electric equipment and keeping batteries charged is no more complicated than rotating your fuel supply.

My main generator that I use when my power is knocked out for months after hurricanes and ice storms is a stationary oil burning engines - it only generates 1000 watts - its uses transformer oil for coolant because it runs at 250° -
It also only turns 400 RPMs and weighs more than two tons - but it only burns 1 gallon of heavy bunker F every 22 hrs -
Slow speed generators are very fuel efficient some are 30:1 efficient at 50 RPMs - as for gasoline when hurricane Katrina hit down here you were not going any were -
On just one acre of land around my house I had 120 old growth tree snapped in half laying on the ground -
The only trees that stand up to strong hurricanes are gum and elm trees -
I used the 5 gallons of gas I had on hand in my saws in days -
The best way to store gasoline is in a propane tank - living in a rural area we just know things - as long as the hydrogen does not flash or does not vent out the gasoline it has an indefinite shelf life -
I had two old 25 gallon butane tanks that my dad had filled with Amoco white gas in the early 1960s I guess -
My dad filled them before a hurricane in 1963 at a Amoco station when I was a kid -
As we cleared all the roads around here - I was burning 52 yr old gasoline -
Kerosene should be stored in a propane tank also -
Its the same for low sulfur diesel -
Those fuel additives put a film on top of the fuel to prevent oxygen from migrating into the fuel as hydrogen evaporated out the fuel -
A sealed gas can like an EAGLE fire safety fuel can, will keep gas good for ever as long and the gaskets are good - they prevent the loss of hydrogen off the fuel - also they block the air out so the fuel does not oxidize -

ive never had issues with ethanol fuel and we use alot of it. we have had issues with saw companies changing to cheaper rubber fuel hoses that disolve. had a old stihl 29 back from 94. i ran that with ethanol till 2006. never had a problem. the 290 i bought as a replacement , the 034 , the 361 had fuel lines fail, like they were made to fail at 10 months. i've not had a issue with my husky 562 yet and i'm going into year 3. i've used all the bar oils, i think the xtreme bar oil is best for above freezing to very warm temps. i like the husky bar oil for sub freezing. word on the 50:1 concentrate. i buy those by the 6 packs 2.5 gal mix. i have seen air pressure changes cause the seems to leak oil. i keep them in the plastic sleave and always pick up 2 and feel for weight discrepancy for leakage. when mixing 50:1 i will shut the pump off at 2.489 gallon. just as a safety feature. i do not like the premixed vp can gas. it might work, but i' think it is too lean. i've heard the saw self adjust changing fuel mixes.

Small gas powered engines are vulnerable to ethanol fuel. Storing equipment with gasoline containing ethanol, could plug the jets inside the carburetor, especially the small engines. By installing a shutoff valve on the fuel hose, between the fuel tank, and the carburetor will allow the engine to run the carburetor empty, before storing. A fuel stabilizer in the tank will help keep the fuel stable. Always top off fuel tanks on small equipment before storing.
