Being a mechanic I will warn yall about topping off fuel tanks. Thats fine BUT when it clicks off don't try to squeeze in more because it will back up into your charcoal canister and cause the carbon to break down and contaminate your EVAP system causing very expensive repairs.
So many immigrants do that here in Canada. That is what they do in their countries including myself UNTIL somebody told me the problem with it.
Wow!! Thank you for that tip. I never knew!!
Or you have a 30 year old vehicle and it just runs out the spout and you get to swear at your 30 cents of lost gas.

@HH its what captures the gas fumes from the tank.
I was in Fort McMurray AB in 2016 and was evacuated at the last minute (like everyone else in the city). Luckily I had enough fuel in my vehicle to get me to Athabasca. Hundreds of others did not, and were stranded on the side of the highway for a day or more. It is amazing how quickly a localized fuel shortage can happen!
Within 7 hours of any emergency disaster all fuel from all gas stations in an area can be bought up and sold out.

You see the long lines for gasoline not only after natural disasters but also after political/economic disasters such as socialism. My country has an abundance of petroleum, but ironically we have a shortage of gasoline. To fill my tank, I have to start lining up the night before at the gas station, and I live in the main city. In other parts of the country, there is no gasoline, and people park in line for days, with different relatives taking turns staying there and sleeping in the car. Greetings from Caracas, Venezuela.

Dude, this was your best video. Content like this is why I keep listening.
This is a very useful video. I live in an apartment, so storing fuel safely is a major concern. So far we have maybe a 1 mo supply of food, and 2-3 weeks of water. The only fuel I store is gas in the vehicles, small propane bottles for camping, and charcoal. Should be enough for a minor emergency. We had a trial run in 2011 during the "Great Southwest" blackout and very few of the neighbors were prepared. I was able to help some of the senior citizens and traded coffee, soup, and cigarettes for some 'C' cell batteries for the radio!
Bravo! A somewhat unique video that not many preppers have done before.
The dual fuel generator, the Champion, is an awesome tool.
During hurricane Michael we were without power for a month. We ran that thing day in and day out with no problems.
It kept a large freezer, a large refrigerator, all the lights and several fans going without issue.
How much fuel did you end up using?
I am storing 250 gallons of diesel for use in my two tractors. I would hope to make it last 5-7 years in a SHTF scenario. I am also storing 500 gallons of propane (15 years) and 75 gallons of gasoline that might last 1-2 years.

This helped me a lot because I have been using these options. Storage is important.
Weeks after Hurricane Sandy, a lot of gas stations had gasoline in their underground tanks. However, if the electricity was out there was no pumping the gasoline or diesel.
Few staions have generators and will be swamped. Also note credit cards won't work and will need cash only until the pumps run dry.
People ridiculed Jeb Bush for making it mandatory for gas stations in Florida to have their pumps hooked up to a generator.... The gas stations got a 100% rebate on their purchase and when the hurricanes hit there was gas but no stop lights.

A year after katrina in biloxi in a destroyed shell station dude was hand pumping out of the underground tanks. Water intrusion? Let it seperate... or mix with good gas. My dad taught me never to below half a tank. But since pandemic shutdown in March, I’ve been topping off my tank if it gets noticeably less than full.
It’s February 2021, and it’s fun to see how scared everybody was three months ago and yet nothing happened.
Those one pound propane tanks he said our non refillable You can buy an adapter at Walmart and refill them from a standard size tank.....very easy to do
Only if you do the right procedure and some states is illegal to transport them. I've done it and works but usually don't get a full lb in it.

@@RagnarrLodbrokAD864 I had heard that but you chance overfilling it.

You can buy adapters on Amazon to use a 20lb (or bigger) tank for things like camp stoves that only take 1lbers. It works great.
I've used the big-daddy Mr. Heater. In Wisconsin a winter, it heated my 3-season 8-person tent up around... 40 degrees F at around 60-70% capacity. It was more than enough for me to camp out in the cold. It also comes with an air-quality sensor and knock-over protection, so pretty decent unit.
Another good item you can add to your prep is a propane adapter that runs about $12 that enables you to gravity feed propane from your 5 gallon to your smaller 14 oz. Cans also a shrader valve remover helps in filling faster by releasing some air from small can.
Thanks for this video Nate. Very well done! 👍👍👍
Great video.
One note on vehicles. in the event of an EMP don't be in a rush to ise your vehicle, most local governments and law enforcement vehicles will not run and as such will quickly take any running vehicles to perform their duties...
I know from experience that in a dry environment (such as the high desert), firewood can last for over 15 years without any kind of overhead cover. With a roof overhead it could probably last at least 25 years.
Wow this was one of my favorite videos of yours I love this topic thank you for the in-depth video 😎
Great informative video CP. Thanks for that!
I love my Diesel car. Here in central Europe almost 50% of cars run on Diesel. It is also commonly used for heating since natural gas is not available in many parts. About 30% of houses are heated by oil. All of those houses have a tank that holds several thousand liters of diesel. That's another big plus for Diesel.
Some of the old Mercedes truck engines (no turbo charger or anything) will run on basically any kind of oil. Pour in diesel, sunflower seed oil, rapeseed oil or even up to 10% gasoline. They will run just fine and pretty much forever with low maintenance.
It is NOT called Diesel !!!!!
It is called Distillate !!!!!
"" We put distillate INTO our diesel engines ""
Great show! lets have some more practical prepping how to's. Prepping shouldn't be just about what can go wrong in society.
Energy Management !!!
You nailed it. Perfect observation/study of the critical primary resource.
After the crash in 2008, I learned how to run a gas motor on wood(gas).....its not easy, but you can do it if you need to. (wood splitter, generator- larger engines.)
We heat our home with Kerosene. Done this for years and our heat is OFF-Grid, meaning we have heat regardless of the environment!
How big of a tank do you have to have?
Kerosene is a great SHTF fuel. Light. Heat. Cooking.
@rampage vented outside is ideal but not absolutely necessary. modern kerosene heaters are rated for a high level of efficiency. as long as you don't put it in a room closed off real tight you should be fine. the main issue with burning things like this is ensuring adequate oxygen so you don't produce carbon monoxide. if you are using it to heat a 1000sqft area and you crack one window a little bit you'll be fine. if you have an older house that isn't super-duper tight, you wouldn't even have to do that

Awesome video, very insightful. You did a fantastic job. 👏👏👏👏👏
This was an awesome video Nate! You covered all of my "lessons learned" over the past 2 decades of living in the country, and I wish I had known these things back then!
I have found that having a mix (propane, solar and firewood) works best for me. And I'm going to procure a load of coal next!
You can buy bottles of refill gel for the small metal alcohol canisters, or there are other ways to fill them with alternate improvised methods like cotton balls and rubbing alcohol, so they don't have to be one-and-done. I don't use charcoal briquettes very often, but I'll buy bags of it when the price is right to have an alternate cooking heat source. Shop around to get the best propane prices; instead of at a gas station, I have found the best price at a local hearth & stove store.
Even though my dad lived in an apartment, he loved using his kerosene heater because it gave off a "more natural" heat. It took a lot of convincing to get him to stop that practice. It was dangerous, it was counterintuitive to have a heat source that required windows to be open to let in cold air. Plus, it made his whole apartment and the clothes he wore smell like diesel.
Cheaper to heat dry air than wet air, encouraging air exchange even in the winter helps prevent mold and mildew as well, if you're.getting small from your heater you're generally using too low a grade of fuel (water clear K-1 or Jet-A from the airport for indoors) or the heater is improperly maintained or adjusted.
You are the best !
Thanks for your work.
Thank You for the information, very good advice.
If your woodburner has firebrick in the bottom (which it should), you can throw in one or two pieces of coal in with your wood when you load it up and get significantly more btu's out of your stove.
Or you can install a multi fuel stove and pretty much burn whatever you want in it (wood, coal, pellets, peat, even compressed coffee grounds) the list goes on 👍

Excellent as always. An odd item that others MIGHT be interested in is the Coleman dual fuel camp stove, it uses normal liquid cooking fuel or GASOLINE. To me gas will be on hand more than cooking fuel. Hard to get used to the fear of an explosion but if it was not safe it would not be sold by Coleman. It works great and without any odor at all, mostly because it vaporizes the fuel then burns it. It’s priced high at about $75 but I really like it and being able to be cooking in minutes with high temps for water, use indoors, with a 1/4th of a cup of gasoline it’s worth the price. I have a kerosene, wood and electric stove and the dual fuel works the best. *I know it’s not for everyone, I had to think practical and get used to the idea.
Coleman mantle lanterns burn gasoline as well.

My Dad ran a small engine repair for many years. In the spring people would bring in there lawn mowers etc. that wouldn't start. The most common problem was fuel left in the tank! Goes stale, loses it's octane, and leaves a coating of shellac in the carburetor, needing a rebuild. Never leave fuel in the tank of your generators etc. And use a fuel stabilizer, for your stored fuel. About firewood, it will actually keep for years, but you have to keep it off the ground, and dry. Good stout pallets are an excellent choice in a covered wood shed. I got several tanks of propane wrapped in plastic under my trailer as spares, in addition to my working ones that I refill as soon as they are empty.
and don't forget to run the unit dry so there is no fuel in the carburetor before you put it away!

Thanks. If you'd like to use bio-diesel fuel it can be done. One of my classmates researched it and made some in his home. There are steps that need to be followed, a few products used to make it like HEAT that is sold in auto parts stores, a blender mixing part, and waiting periods. Fuel supply is going to be a big problem with the grid down. You can only empty so many gas stations before there's nothing left, and the problem with EVs is that they usually have so much tech in them that they could also be a liability.
If the grid is down no one will get gas from the stations unless they use hand pumps and steal it
@@shultz550 That's what I mean.
Synthetic Fuel is very simple to make you simply Distill Sawdust distill the vapour and you have Methanol basically the same stuff as Surgical Spirit but do not drink or you will go Blind it destroys the Optical Nerve and there's no cure you are Blind.
@@p.oneill6943 - a ton of wood makes about 70L of fuel; not very efficient.
@@NapoleonGelignite Don't Blame me, The Laws of Physics state you can Never get More out than you put in, It was just a thought, anyway I was thinking more about Sawdust
Use pure gasoline (also called clear gas) instead of gas with ethanol. Add some stabilizer and you're good to go for quite a while if you store it properly. I'd recommend doing this once a year just to be safe. Let your vehicles gas tank get low then fill it up with the stored fuel and repeat. Never had a problem doing it this way.
Can you keep adding new gasoline to the storage one?
Thank you you have shown me a wealth of information that can be of a great benefit
Wow, the scripting and video production values are awesome!
The 1lb green propane tanks are refillable with a cheap adapter to hook up to the big tanks
Yeah! I heard him say can’t be refilled but they can !
It is very useful I must agree. Also those adapters to use the large bbq tanks on those devices that use the small tanks.
@@Sim_racer_40oz I think in Canada it is illegal to do so ... I got my adapter from the USA.
Yes, your right, they can be refilled using an adapter that allows them to be refilled off the 20,30,40lb tanks, i'v been refilling them for years, saves $$$, lots of $$$.
Freeze the green canister first. You can get more propane in there.
One issue with the Biodiesel made of vegetable oil is that it freezes around -5C. You can add a heater to prevent that.
Not to mention the process of biodiesel requires a lot of chemicals to produce, it's not exactly something you are going to just have around let alone be able to keep on hand after a shit hits the fan moment.
Great information. Thank you a very concerned Canadian Grandma
Great advice!☮️❤️💥🐯🦁🦋🦄🇺🇸🌈🌎🌈🌎😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇🤪🤪
Those “army green” cans are Scepter Military cans. They are the best, and do expand and contract. You need a screw in poor spout and a large size plier or channel locks to unscrew the cap. They are designed to melt if ever caught on fire and not explode.
“Screw in pour spout”
That would be a donkey dick good sir.

@@_DB.COOPER lol it’s what we called them . 🤷🏻♂️
@@sethchristopher interesting.

The newer red gas cans are made of cheaper plastic. The plastic is thinner so the expansion when the gasoline is heated makes them really swell up. Damn things really round out. Even the base of them. Once you notice this and bleed off the fumes, they keep the rounded shape. This makes them more unstable for standing up..unless you can put something heavy next to them, they might fall over and leak gasoline everywhere. They suck.
Found somtimes with the shitty spouts they swell and then fume vapors or leak. Gotten rid of most of the stupid filler necks they come with.
@@radiomanz117 Yeah - those spouts are cheap and crack too easy. Better hope it is not the least bit cold if you have to flex them to fill your machine..
@@tammy-lynnstewart5677 those fillers suck to try and use. Hi have 6 different funnels to use now. Works better. The new tractor supply tanks are nice. Its push button release. I use 1 for diesel on the tractor.
I used to watch so many other channels, now I feel compelled and exited to watch your content. You have a ton of amazing info. I’ll stay watching. Just ordered a few things from your site with Coinbase. If I had it like that I’d want a nice gas mask or a really good first aid kit.. been prepping for a little while now. My closet is full of rice and beans, now after the last vid I watched it’s going to be honey, maple syrup, sugar, salt, soy sauce , powdered milk. Wish I wasn’t broke lol. You’re deaf my favorite channel to come home to and watch. Thank you.
Great info! Thank you!
There was one fuel that I noticed that you missed ... Naphtha ... zippo fuel ... ronsonol, etc. Also ... in solid form you could used mothballs (some are naphtha ... Don't burn the Camphor type!)
Have a better day ... Eat and Buy!
