In this video Dr Clive demonstrates to family members what living with a hearing loss sounds like.
He explains to different types of hearing loss using a baseline example then applying a modification to match a persons loss.
The value we hope you get from watching it is an appreciation as to how withdrawn or difficult it must be for people living with hearing loss.

For me it is like hearing people talking underwater. When I can't/don't/didn't hear my mom and she repeats herself she gets mad. I was so excited to be able to kinda show her what it is like for me all the time. When I sat down and explained to her that I had found something to show her how I hear. She just looked at me and said "I don't care." She got up and walked out.
Sadly I could only reply, "I know."
There was no yelling, no argument, no nothing.

That is awful. And what I’m about to say is not an excuse for it but some moms tend to be in denial when their kid shows they have an issue. Only with an outside force such as a medical professional can talk sense into her. My mom wasn’t too extreme, but she had a form of denial when I told her I needed glasses. My vision was already so bad that I started with lenses -1.5. The dr told her, “idk how she’s been able to live”. Only then I think she felt a slight guilt and then acceptance. Before this, it was “no, you don’t need glasses, you’re fine, you’re just having one of those days, etc etc etc”. I advise you to get a hearing test done and have the doctor talk some sense to your mom. It’s the only way.

@@lulu12345575 This is just like my mom. We told her that our younger brother might have adhd and we need to check if he really does have one but she only got mad at us. She’s in denial and guilty at the same time, she thinks if she can’t help him in her own way it means she’s a failure of a mother. She’s a nurse but it doesn’t mean she can do what a psychologist/psychiatrist do.

I've been looking for a video like this. I've lived my whole life with a hearing loss. I must see someone's mouth when they're speaking. I know others around me are frustrated with me because I don't hear well, and that, in turn, frustrates me.

I didn't understand about 97% of this and only grasped a few phrases. I was diagnosed with 'serious and profound' hearing loss about 15 years ago.And began noticing extreme tinnitus about 24 years ago. Never have peace. I'm sure my hearing is much worse now! Hearing aids didn't seem to help, and they really made my ears feel bruised. Maybe someday technology can help me.

Hi Suzu, if you are struggling with hearing aids and the tenderness they can bring. There are some lubrication products out there. They are made for you to use with your earmold to help with inserting and removing. Give your ears some time to adjust to the sensation of hearing aids. You could ask your audiologist about this or just research it online. I hope this helps.

I cannot hear a smoke alarm, but I feel the pressure of the soundwaves against my eardrum. When I feel the unusual pressure against my ear, I remember to go check the smoke alarm and ask family if it's going off. Sometimes if my ear is tilted a particular way, I catch the sound, but not usually.

Video is very close. However, they forgot to show cutoff frequencies on the sensorineural loss. I have mild and moderate hearing loss (one ear is close to the border of moderate, the other is past it but not by much). One thing about sensorineural hearing loss is high frequencies also get cut off at a point, to which no matter how loud it is, you can't hear it. You may be able to feel pressure if it's loud enough (sort of like a full ear feeling), but otherwise no. My cutoff frequencies were 14khz and 16khz when I was tested at 14. I am 22 now.
