      @Vismund Same man, I got EXACTLY the ones you got haha. I'm contemplating on getting this one too so I can have a full small studio with me. A synthesizer, a drum machine and a sampler.

      Desperadow i don't remember the exact number but less than 10. you should look into each one and see which features you need or like the most. each one has a different role and purpose. the speak for example is used to record voice and manipulate it, the sub is for bass sounds, the KO is a sampler (like the MPC3000 for hip hop) etc...
      they are not exactly restricted to that, you can do a lot with each pocket operator. but some have some features others don't so it depends.

      @@GrumpyStormtrooper I'd probably get the KO for versatility, thanks man!

    Good to see (hear) that they actually added sooo much valuable functionality in such a small device. The mute, accent and fx really makes it a beast on its own. I totally see why it is a bit more expensive.

    It's nice to see how far you have come, I just remembered how insecure you sounded in some of your older videos. And now look at you! No nervosity, clear editing, a strong voice and even some funny parts :)
    Well done Jeremy, now I fancy this darn machine... I would like to buy it, but Microtonic is simply not worth it for me at the moment. What about the rumors about the limited polyphony though? I thought the Tonic is going to have 16 notes of polyphony, but in some discussion panels people claim that the Tonic only sports 4 note polyphony? Thank you for clearing this up :P

    • @RedMeansRecording
      @RedMeansRecording  7 років тому +2

      Huh! I haven't heard about the polyphony thing! Butttt, if you think about it makes sense. In the video I go over "choke groups", which means you can't have more than one of the pads in a 4 verticle group playing at once. That means, yes, only 4 polyphony, I guess.

  • @MattGreerMusic
    @MattGreerMusic 7 років тому +6

    The only slight disappointment I had with this device is that the pattern chain maxes out at 64 which, don't get me wrong, is still better than the 16 limit that the first gen had but not as long as the 128 that the second gen POs had.
    64 seems like plenty and for straight up grooves it is quite a lot but I found it to tap out when trying to do a full song's worth of variations. Anyways, only minor gripe because this unit had less pattern chain length than the 3 PO's that came before it. BUT... They are working with such a small amount of processing power and memory though so it's honestly astounding what this drum machine is capable of for its size.
    If the Tonic came in a larger box and had multiple outputs and midi, it would be a $700 machine. And it would be worth it.
    Nice video. Well explained.

    • @RedMeansRecording
      @RedMeansRecording  7 років тому +2

      I would love a big-boy Tonic. That would be amazing.
      Have you watched Cuckoo's video with Magnus about how he made the PO-32? His explanation of the processing limitations was really interesting, and explains why some corners were (barely) cut.

      I'd say Tonic, Sub & Robot
      You're gonna want the bass that the Sub can add to round out your grooves and the Rhythm is great but the Tonic is just a bit better and more versatile.

    • @theycallmejpj
      @theycallmejpj 7 років тому +10

      Robot is the best. you have three channels of sound, meaning you can have a basic drum track, a sequenced pattern, and live play on top of it. I found you can make fleshed out songs with it just by itself.
      if you're buying more than one I would say arcade + robot is a very good pairing; rhythm is good with everything; factory and sub are okay but a bit harsh sounding (and limited to 16 pattern chaining - the robot can do 128); and office I would just avoid.

    • @rootbeeeeer
      @rootbeeeeer 7 років тому +2

    Just out of curiosity what would be a real world application for this other than a nifty synth toy (which is pretty neat as well)?

      I don't see why not. I mean if your a decent singer or play and an instrument over it.. or just talk and play trippy samples over it

    That's a neat device. I've got no clue about anything musical but you really explained it well! What's the point in the display surely something functional would be more useful?

      The company that makes it is as much about design as they are function. Most of their UI is in some way obfuscated or strange, but always engaging.

    6:47 I am completely hung up on this. I'm trying very seriously to follow this tutorial and this step just doesn't work at all. I've done the exact steps you have - press play, hold sound and click an active track, hold down write and twist the knobs - and I'm getting no changes to the sound whatsoever. Are there situations where this doesn't work, or is mine broken?

    • @giddycadet
      @giddycadet 5 місяців тому

      I had to delete my pattern and start from scratch. I suspect the problem was that I had already manually configured the paraneheters for some of the individual beats and for some reason that invalidated me trying to use this method on every single track. fucked up

    What do you think of the lock function? I'm new to synths in general but I'm looking at the PO systems as a cheap way to test the waters

      Red Means Recording the tab on the the left of the screen can be broken off to write protect all the patterns permanently. I only was able to figure that out from reading the user guides

      I think the lock function is an interesting novelty.

      Thanks for the replies man, ever since I saw your last op-1 video on reddit, I've been studying synths nonstop and have decided to try doing my game soundtrack on my own. Are the pads easy to press down on these? I'm looking to get one to start with and am looking at the sub, arcade, and the tonic to test the waters

    • @RedMeansRecording
      @RedMeansRecording  7 років тому +1

      Yes, the pads are easy to press down.
      I think if you really want to do game soundtrack stuff you might want to look into software. It will be infinitely more easy to create complex melodies and actual songs. There are many plugins and packs available to make those classic NES / SEGA sounds.

    If I’m looking for a drum oriented PO to add to an arcade and a robot, would you recommend the tonic (without the vst) or the rhythm? What are the strengths of each one as a drum machine?

  • @apluve178
    @apluve178 7 років тому +1

    This is awesome! What would you recommend as the best choice for my first PO? I was wondering if I could play with these things and make EDM-ish sounds (with focus on bass and melody, I guess) with them. I don't know what to get first, though. I was thinking of the sub but I heard it's pretty limited compared to the robot? or should I get the tonic first?

    • @RedMeansRecording
      @RedMeansRecording  7 років тому +3

      If you get the tonic I would suggest you invest in the Microtonic VST as well, so you can make all new crazy sounds for the Tonic.

    • @apluve178
      @apluve178 7 років тому +1

      thanks! I'll keep that in mind. in your opinion though, which one is the best as a standalone? it might take a while (months, probably) for me to get a second one. and although they're all cheap, tonic's more expensive than the others, I think?

    • @RedMeansRecording
      @RedMeansRecording  7 років тому

      Robot, Factory, Arcade

    • @RedMeansRecording
      @RedMeansRecording  7 років тому +4

      But to be clear: EDM is not what these do. They're all very much firmly in the chiptune camp.

    • @apluve178
      @apluve178 7 років тому +1

      hmm. now I'm torn between robot and factory. and sub. so in all of these, you can record a drum sequence, then put/record melody (or is it bass?) over it, then put another melody on top of it? or can you only put two layers and one live?

    I want to make dark/deep techno and would like to use one of the POs either Tonic or Rhytm. Which one would you recommend me that would fit the style with its sound palette? Considering that I wont use Microtonic.

    • @RedMeansRecording
      @RedMeansRecording  7 років тому +1

      Neither is going to get you a very large tonal palette, honestly. I would recommend the PO-32 if you were going to get Microtonic, but without it you're just going to have the stock sounds. I think the PO-32 is more "techno" than the PO-12, but you're going to want to pair either one with at least something making bass sounds.

  • @JoelGilardini
    @JoelGilardini 7 років тому

    Between this and the PO12, which will you choose function wise?

    • @RedMeansRecording
      @RedMeansRecording  7 років тому +2

      If you plan on getting Microtonic, PO-32 all the way. If you don't it tougher. I like the effects in the PO-32 better, but the PO-12 is nice and solid too.
