    I have been following VoicePlay since they competed on The Sing-Off (against Home Free) about 10 years ago. You will quickly come to discover that your favorite VP song is the most recent one that you've listened to. Also, in 10 years, I have yet to find one that I don't like. Maybe one that I like less, but not one that I dislike.

    One of their softer songs. This and True Colours are two without any beatboxing in, though I Can't Make You Love Me, is another, newer one. Geoff Cstellucci, bass master 2000, has the softest smoothing bass around. He has his own channel of low bass covers. He can shake your bones with his lowest subharmonic notes but has a five octave range. He does about half of VoicePlay's arrangements. Layne, the beatboxer, but not in this, has a sweet voice and does roughly half of the arrangements. Eli , rock god and master of riffs and run, (say it to rhyme with jelly). does some arrangments too. VoicePlay always bring the emotions.

    I always forget that they don’t have any voice percussion in this one! Layne normally does their vocal perc, but he used to be the group’s primary baritone and I love love love when they arrange songs that allow him space to use that again. He has such a beautiful voice - they all do, of course, but Layne’s always stands out to me because we don’t get to hear it that often.

    The group has the longest history among the "big three" (actually, at least for me, "big four") a cappella groups, being around since 1997 when they were called "4:2:Five". They had LOTS of changes in their lineup, I saw that others told you something about it, here's a video by Huldra Draco telling the story of VP members from the beginning: ua-cam.com/video/R6WxCwHnebI/v-deo.html
    That said, they cover a wide range of genres, and I think it would be good to try picking from all, or most, of them to experience their variety. I'm not really good at dividing music into genres, for me there are only two ("Good music" and "Bad music" 😁😅), but scrolling their catalogue you'll see what I mean.
    Geoff and Layne have been the main arrangers, with some few songs arranged by Eli. From now on it's being said that they will share the arrangement task proportionally, about 1/3 each. All three are GREAT at that, and after a little experience one becomes able to identify who arranged the song that's playing 🙂.
    They're based in Orlando, FL and all have background as performers in either Disney, Universal or both Theme Parks, hence their regular Disney coverage. They also are wonderful human beings. If you decide to cover their version of the "Halo theme", and watch it to the very end (i.e. including the long spoken outro), you'll have a glimpse of that... 🙂
    Geoff and Layne are as well the only "founding members" still present in the lineup. They were in the original formation of 4:2:Five.
    They're also 100% independent, which gives them total freedom in their artistic choices. Most of their videos are filmed at Pattycake Productions, a studio co-owned by Layne and Tony Wakim (another former member that you can still see in some older videos, like "Phantom of the opera" and more). Eli usually takes care of the lighting and sometimes of the electronically created backgrounds (using Unreal Engines).
    What else... Ah, if you think that what Geoff did in these two videos was "deep", be prepared for some surprises 😁. And keep your bass booster off... trust me 😅.
    See you next time!

    I found Voice Play when their version of Hoist the Colors popped up in my recommendations years ago. It's still a favorite of mine for vocals, costuming, & and theater. In addition to loving their work as a group, I also found their bass Geoff Castellucci had a channel, too. His Misty Mountains Cold was the first of his songs I heard, but he's done so many good ones like House of the Rising Sun, Monster Mash, one from Nightmare Before Christmas (Jack's Lament?), etc. His low notes are unbelievable.

    From left to right:
    Layne Stein, beatboxer and baritone, does about half the arrangements
    J None, baritone from 2018 to 2021, left to sing with the US Navy, comes back often as featured artist
    Eli (ell-ee) Jacobso, rock tenor, with them since 2012, has done a few arrangements and will be doing more going forward
    Earl Elkins Jr, high tenor, with them from the beginning, left in 2020 for personal reasons
    Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci (cast uh LOO chee), bass, does about half the arrangements
    Earl has not been replaced, J None was replaced by Cesar de la Rosa in 2021. They are one man short and bring in featured artists from a large group of friends in the Orlando area.
    They are totally independent, no label, no manager, they choose what they will do, produce almost everything themselves. Whoever arranges, switching off month to month, is responsible for everything -set, costume, makeup, storyboard, video, first mix. You can see it all in the credits.
    Try these:
    Creep - Eli's arrangement
    The Lion Sleeps Tonight - Layne's arrangement
    I Can't Make You Love Me, Geoff's arr

    Lol, I saw them live. The first song they did was Elvira. When Geoff hit those oom papa mow mows he vibrated my entire rib cage. No kidding, no exaggeration…I felt every single rib.
    Hit up his solo stuff. House of the Rising Sun, Ain’t No Sunshine, 16 Tons and Sound of Silence are my faves there.

    • @Gael4ce
      @Gael4ce 4 місяці тому

      @@GroovyLavaSquirrelMedic Oh…FYI….
      You haven’t heard him pushing his range yet. These songs all featured his middle to low-middle range.
      He’s got another few octaves at both ends. 😝
      I always giggle when folks new to him listen to something where he’s not trying and they’re like “wow that’s deep”. I’m sitting here thinking “buckle up buttercup….”
      If you want to hear him showing off with VoicePlay, then Valhalla Calling or Hellfire.
      But all of his solo stuff shows him off. He does everything in 4 or 5 part harmony and sings all the parts. Which should tell you something about his range.

    • @zarasha8220
      @zarasha8220 3 місяці тому

      We need to ease him into Geoff's solo stuff gently... I don't think he's anywhere near prepared enough for Unshaken :) Your recommendations are a good starting point, and I'd add:
      Shenandoah
      High and Dry
      Jack's Lament
      and the infamous dwarves (in the following order)
      Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold
      I See Fire
      and finally, BEFORE watching Unshaken, he needs to watch Ghost Riders In The Sky to be introduced to the cowboys

    • @Gael4ce
      @Gael4ce 3 місяці тому

      @@zarasha8220 Now see, I don’t care much for either High and Dry or Shenandoah. I happen to had a long standing dislike for both songs well before Geoff touched them.
      I love Ain’t No Sunshine for the multiple tenor to bass on one note drops. Sounds Of Silence and House of the Rising Sun are my other two faves of his solo work with 16 Tons crowding close.
      I like Jack’s Lament for the way it shows off what Geoff can do, but again, the song itself isn’t one I’d ever listen to otherwise.

    I love Voice Play, especially their "deep dragon rumbler" Geoff Castellucci.
    He has plenty of songs on his own channel.
    You don't know this band because they are not slaves to The Americain Music Industry Mafia.
    I love "Hoist the Colors", Hellfire", Nothing Else Matters", Valhalla Calling" and "My Mother Told Me" but all their songs are good.
    Great reaction👍

    My favorite VP song on any given day is the newest one... Geoff Castellucci is a whole 'nother thing as well, the music on his channel is not a Capella but usually stunning and extremely "bassy" (think grizzly bear lullaby or dragon purr). Voiceplay sings , rock/metal " Nothing else Matters", "Dream On", folk "Whiskey in the Jar", game music " The Dragon Born Comes-Skyrim", "Halo" , their newest release "Sleeping in the Cold Below" from Warframe, "Enemy" from League of Legends, Disney (as you know) lots of Disney , Aca Top 10s mostly live one shots, Broadway "The Wicked Medley", movie music "Hoist the Colours" from PotC and everything in between . There is 12 years worth of wonder on their channel have fun... we'll join you.

    Way Down is a great cover by Geoff Castelluci (bass). It shows his goofy humour off. Anything by VoicePlay or Geoff is exceptional. They are independent so that is why they don't have the recognition they deserve.

    This has always been my favorite Elvis song. They updated it beautifully while still honoring the original. They work hard on making the piece really reflect the lyrics and frequently give us all the “feels”.
    Their arrangements are amazing and take advantage of the talent on hand. This featured three of the original members. Geoff (the bass - pronounced as Jeff Cast-a-LOO-Chee), Layne Stein (originally the baritone and present beatboxer) and Earl Elkins (bearded guy with incredible tenor) met in middle school, singing together since then.
    Around 2010, when they changed their name to VoicePlay, their beatboxer left to pursue an acting career (he is in their HALO cover), Layne switched from baritone to beatboxing, Tony Wakim (smooth baritone with amazing eyes- you can still see him in older videos) came into the baritone slot, and Eli Jacobson (bald rock god, but also can sing sweetly as he did here) came in as tenor 2.
    Around 2017 Tony left and J Nunn (the soulful baritone) filled that position. In 2020 Earl left and a year later J was recruited by the Navy to sing for them (he is now singing bass in a very elite Navy choral group). His recent reassignment to the east coast (VoicePlay is based in Orlando) means he is a frequent guest artist. The baritone spot was filled by Cesar de la Rosa who has a soft breathy baritone and is full of sass.
    They are still one permanent member short and use talented friends to fill the spot. Somehow the guess I’ll be expecting so well that you look for it they were part of the regular group.

      Great info!😊
      I believe that Scott Porter left already in 2002, though, and Layne took over beatboxing then? I’ll go check the Just Sing video and Huldra Draco’s info.

      @veronicathunander4579 4 місяці тому +1

      I just checked both Just Sing with captions and Huldra Dracos video about all VP members. Scott left in 2003; they hired another beatboxer for 6 months, then Layne took over. So Layne has been their beatboxer since 2003 or 2004.

    • @janetdw
      @janetdw 4 місяці тому +2

      @@veronicathunander4579 thanks for checking. I forgot about that other beatboxer. They had a lot of changes during that time and all I can never remember is that Eli joined around that time as did Tony so I assumed that that’s when Layne switched over. I’m gonna go fix my comment that I cut and paste out of frequently. Thanks for the correction!
