I'm not surprised that Valhalla Calling beat out Seven Nation Army. Not that either is really superior, but that out-of-nowhere rap always blows people's minds and makes one hell of a first impression. Speaking of surprises, I sure hope Nothing Else Matters is already on your shortlist.
This is another video arranged, directed and produced by Layne. But the rap part was written by a member of another acapella group, Straight No Chaser. He also wrote J’s rap for Voiceplay’s video Superstition. This was filmed at a studio with large video screens for the backgrounds. Eli did all of the backgrounds using Unreal Engines, the same as he did for My Mother Told Me.
I could tell that you liked it. You barely stopped to make comments. It was inspired by the video game Assassin’s Creed . It is appropriate that we have J staring out across the water at the beginning. He was recruited by the US Navy and he’s come back (at least for this). The rap was added and some hints to his being in the military (ops, etc). One of my favorite parts is while he’s rapping, in the background you can hear the guys singing “This is WAR”. It always gives me chills. I see you did My Mother Told Me next. It is also associated with the video game Assassin’s Creed and the TV program The Vikings. J was still a permanent member of the group at that time. The makeup and a lot of the costuming here is from MMTM. Among their tattoos are runes spelling out VoicePlay. Layne did the arrangement and Eli the amazing backgrounds using Unreal Engine which is used to provide digital backgrounds for video games. It was filmed, not green screen, but at a studio with immense (Full wall!) LED screens. The only real pieces in that set are the tables and benches. Even the door that J walks through was pure CGI. He was standing in front of a screen and the background “opened” for him. Layne was responsible for the creaking door sound.. The music in the outro is the karaoke track. The percussion and background vocals and it could be a piece on its own because it’s also gorgeous.
That stupidly low note early on, when you said you could feel the vibrations, was a B0 - that is just two keys away from not being on a keyboard anymore! Geoff has said that it takes him 70, 80 takes to get a useable line with notes that low, but it’s still really dang impressive!!
The version of Hoist the Colors your wife knows is by Bobby Bass, he does a ton of covers and duets on TikTok and Instagram. He is also one of the bass singers in the Bass Gang, and the Wellermen. You should do the Bass Gang for a week, they are newer than VP and HF but all the members are amazing bass singers from all over the world (Egypt, Czech Republic, and the US.
Looks like you're enjoying your trip down the Voiceplay rabbit hole. Since you liked this you might want to check out their version of My Mother Told Me.
For an example of Voiceplay's Live ability, I would hugely recommend their Oak Ridge Boy's cover "Elvira live at the Gordon Performance Centre" It will amaze you and equally disappoint you in that they don't tour like they used to anymore. Loving your reactions will be sad when VP week is over but glad you're maybe considering a Geoff Week.
Just an aside....Viking is a verb not a noun. They go aviking.........Learned this from daughter who just got Masters from Univ of Iceland in Icelandic culture studies......She lives there fulltime now.
@@albalass54 probably should have said rapping raiders and I did know that technically it’s not a noun but these days most English speakers use it as a noun language changes. We all have our pet hates with words we feel are misused…mine is decimate or decimated but I have given up worrying about it
One of the absolute best Voiceplay songs. I come back to it literally every single day. The only one that beats it, for me personally, is Hellfire. And that’s because it’s so Geoff forward and I was already a huge fan of that song before they covered it.
Geoff always had short hair until he had no time to get it cut and then came lockdown and the situation carried on. People liked it so I think he jus carried on with it.
