With all due respect, the mass immigration multiculturalism we've seen over recent decades, which the Howard years did nothing really to abate, despite some noble rhetorical efforts, is the chief corrosive element on our self belief in our traditional institutions and values. How on Earth are we supposed to maintain what are essentially British Christian values when we have a policy of the increasingly culturally disempowering of people of British ancestry and Christian belief?
Growing GDP is fine, but ultimately, the purpose of prosperity is to serve the country, not that the country damages itself in serious ways merely in pursuit of higher GDP figures. The fact is, per capita GDP has been stagnant through the period of mass immigration multiculturalism, whilst the cultural issues it has given rise to have been substantial. This - for many people - makes it a net negative. I certainly wouldn't support the destruction of our culture and identity merely in pursuit of a slightly higher GDP figure.

Sadly that respect (and the culture itself) is diminishing more and more these days, but I don't think you can solely place the blame for that on multiculturalism. There are other factors like the nihilism of atheism and the identity politics of the left that have to be taken into account.
I think we should have a limit on immigration and be very strict on who we let in, deporting all illegal immigrants. I do think multiculturalism has put Australia in a tough spot, a society needs an organised culture and having so many creates a lot of issues. I don't think Australia should be exclusively British Christian's however.

Australia lost 62,000 killed in WW1, 25,000 in WW2 and probably less than 2,000 others in all other wars, so less than 90,000 killed. I don’t have the precise stats on gun deaths but I would be totally amazed if 10,000 (or even 3,000) had ever died in the 230 years since European settlement in Australia, from non-military gun deaths in Australia. The US approach to guns is a simply regarded by almost all Australians as just plain stupid because over and over again, we keep seeing innocent people dying en-masse. And I think your comment about guns saving more lives than they’ve taken simply begs the question of what sort of a society you live in if hundreds of thousands of people have to die with guns in the community and this is somehow saving lives. I had no idea that this "John Anderson" guy was so incredibly intelligent and well-spoken. He is by far the greatest interviewer I have ever heard. His ability to listen and understand and ask great questions is shocking. I suppose my expectations for people to be so brilliant are really low given how awful the media is here in the States. I'm pouring through his interviews and each time I am amazed at how thrilling it is to hear someone know how to balance perfectly the art of when to speak and when to listen.
