  • This video follows the Raritan Central Railway as they conduct their Saturday morning operations at Raritan Center in Edison, NJ. Raritan Center contains more than 13 million feet of industrial space, making it one of the largest industrial parks in the Northeastern United States. As such, Raritan Central is tasked with serving many customers who use commodities such as plastic pellets, corn syrup, lumber, and steel to make their products.
We start at Conrail’s Metuchen Yard, where Raritan Central’s RC-1 local picks up a cut of cars to take back to their sorting yard, located on Campus Drive in Edison. After watching the train shove back toward their track, we catch up with them at their Campus Drive yard, where they sort cars for the upcoming week and build their train in preparation for the morning’s work. With their train assembled, they depart with a pair of high-hood GP38-2s and head to the Home Depot Distribution Center to drop a cut of center beams and box cars. Next, they drop off cars for a couple of customers along Northfield Avenue before finally setting off a gondola at Yanuzzi Materials, then returning to the yard and calling it a day.
The Raritan Central runs six days a week (every day except Sunday) and utilizes a host of classic EMD locomotives to complete its work. It’s a neat operation somewhat hidden in the bustling North Jersey area, but I have reason to believe it certainly helps the New Jersey economy.
