😃 Thank you, Todd, for sharing with us a small portion of your family trip to Blackwater! It's a beautiful park, and just the kind of place I would go - to see the falls, and hike around in the forest. My family had a special park near us that we'd visit from time to time: Starved Rock State Park, in northwestern Illinois and partly on the Illinois River valley. Blackwater reminds me of it. 😏

    • @AppalachianHistoryDetectives

Sounds like find memories there Catalina. Trips like that are important for families and especially kids so they learn to appreciate nature and it’s beauty. The really cool thing about it, which you will see when you look it up, is that you can actually spend the night there in a covered wagon that has been converted into an overnight cabin/living quarters. Beautiful, educational, and it gives us an ability to see places that we may not be able to visit this year. I am impressed on you adding a historical perspective to this location. Hope you can make more like this. (It is similar to the Smoke Hole adventure you put out). I think you have found another venue for your channel if you want. You were able to tie it into Appalachian History Detectives quite nicely. 👍😊
Davis as well as Thomas has a lot of little interesting spots to eat, hope you took some time to enjoy some of them.
I am only one and a half hours driving from Blackwater Fall, I usually make it at least a couple times a year to the area, except for this year, lots of doctors appointments has kept me busy😕.

What a gorgeous falls Todd and equally lovely scenery of your canyon country. You have such a lovely family and it is always wonderful to see you out enjoying your time with them. Video's like this are such food for the heart and soul. My little ones have grown, and tho my eldest daughter has two little ones of her own, she and her hubby live far away so I don't see them as I would like to. We often took our children out camping high in the mountain country near us. It looks very similar to your video, only on the other side of the country. Blackwater Canyon reminds me of where we are going later today, only the falls is called Panther Creek Falls, and is not near as well known as yours nor as well maintained. (The scenic overlook fell into the canyon this past winter, so they just removed it.)
It is mushroom hunting time here and we are going hunting for chanterelles and other edible mushrooms before the weather gets colder. Thank you so much for sharing your family adventures, and also your love of the word. May the peace of our Lord go with you today too.

Hey Julie thanks and I will. I have two more outings I shot to release but have yet done anything with them. Frustratingly these videos are my least watched so I’m unsure if I should continue to shoot them. My approach is to present our natural resources and natural treasures. I try to make them interesting but only my very loyal fans watch them. It’s hard to get the audience to see the value of family, nature, adventure and discovery I try to capture in these. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I live in Warrenton, VA and can be on Skyline Drive or the Blue Ridge Parkway within the hour. Of course WV, MD not far at all. Born and raised in VA. There is no other place I have wanted to live! I love that I can get to the coast in less than 4 hrs. While I love the beach, I cannot imagine NOT living near the mountains. It's a good thing Virginia ticks all the boxes. Surrounding states equally beautiful. Not a city girl. Thanks for the hike! I would probably expire if I attempted it 😉 But who knows, I might get in better shape and give it a try. Todd, this is fabulous. You are taking us on journeys through The countryside and to historic locations in your beautiful part of our world in all of your videos. We love seeing the country and learning the background and history. I immediately saw the dark water and was so pleased that you explained about the tannins. I have questions. Does the tannin affect the water so that it is toxic/harmful to man and animals? Are the tannins chemically removed so that it has agricultural and or public use? ABSOLUTELY continue always to take us places we cannot see otherwise and keep on telling us the history and stories. God bless and

    • @AppalachianHistoryDetectives

The Tannins are non toxic. It is the leaching from pine needles and the moss. I’ve never drank it but it’s a common sight in the high mountain rivers.

I from the Jersey shore but been here in Ferndale,WA for seven years and we have some walks kinda like yours except our trees are bigger, Douglass Firs and assorted pines etc,
That water has an interesting color, back home in the Pine Barrens area where I grew up, the water has a lot of iron in it and is darker than yours.
That's a beautiful Canyon, I remember places like that when I traveled the Blue Ridge Parkway way back in the sixties

Thanks Rick, and thank you for giving the cycle a name for me. Blackwater Falls and adjacent Canaan Valley is like this and frost throughout the year is not uncommon. Before the clearing of the land by Timber Companies in the 1880's West Virginia had huge trees. The Red Spruce were almost cut to extinction, and the Balsam Firs are more rare. I do have a video coming up on efforts to save this tree in Canaan.
Harpers Ferry is about 45 minutes from me, and Blackwater Falls is about 1.5 hours drive southwest. They completed a new 4 lane highway right up to it so it is an easy drive now, and very scenic.
I have a lot of fans in the Washington/Oregon region and from my communications with them, I'm itching to go see these states. I hear from my own wife I would want to move and live there.

There are a lot more layers of history on the East Coast and coming from Jackson, NJ near the pine barrens, I spent many years exploring the whole state but especially the central and southern regions.

Hey Todd, This has nothing to do with this video, but the video the Chigg did with you guys out at your great grandparents house. In the wrap up, I think it was mentioned that you found a 1914 Lincoln cent. Make sure you check it, as if it has a Denver mint mark, it could be worth a few hundred bucks! The 1914-D Lincoln cent is a semi key date of the wheat wreath series.

Portland Oregon near where I’m from, was nicknamed stump town after 1847. The city was growing so rapidly that the stumps of trees were left behind until manpower could be spared to remove them. In some areas the stumps remained for so long that the locals whitewashed them to make them more visible. About 45 minutes south of Portland is Salem where I live, we have a beautiful falls we go to too. It’s called Silver Creek Falls. Unfortunately, it was devastated by the Santiam Canyon fires this summer. Our falls has a trail that you can walk down to and walk behind it.

Thanks Martha. I have a number of Oregonians watching my channel and have recently sent photos of falls out there but none of Silver Falls. I think it is so sad to see these trees cut down that were so old and here in our mountains they have been cleared 2 and 3 times so finding big growth is rare.
