I have wondered if a watercolor hex chart would be helpful or not, but you've answered that question. I was surprised at your hex chart at how many neutrals there were. Thanks for sharing all this good info with us. Oh! I especially liked your idea of putting the acetate with the colored pencil numbers over the colored pencil hex chart.! Stroke of genius.
OMG! You are my coloring organizational guru! This is just another example of why you are my #1 go to with any coloring I do in my cardmaking. I have improved so much with my coloring(people have noticed & told me)because if you, thank you. Now about this video, OUTSTANDING! I can't wait to get started with my color swatch binder this is something that will keep me busy once fall comes back around and I'm inside, not in my yard enjoying the spring/summer weather. Once again you have inspired me. You never disappoint. You ROCK! Your #1 fan🦋
The part of my brain that organizes was doing the happy dance and shouting, “Fantastic, awesome, outstanding...!!!” Your watercolor pictures are amazing. You are so talented!! I’m going to use your method...exceptional.
Thank you for explaining the numbers and symbols from the pamphlet showing DS colors! Your binder is awesome! I know this is a time consuming process but it's so worth it. Have a great Friday and weekend!
OMG! You have the entire Daniel Smith watercolor collection, my head just EXPLODED. I love Daniel Smith watercolor paint and crayons. You’re RICH. lol Thank you for sharing I guess. You’re very blessed.
Actually, you will find such differences in any medium. (I assume even pastels, colored pencils, and other dry media.) I used to paint in acrylics, and different companies would use different pigments for the same color name. So I got used to reading pigment codes in addition to the color names. Of course, then you get into student vs. professional grade, with what the filler:pigment ratio is. So much info to learn! But, I think if you're serious, totally worth it. :)
Thanks for showing this, it helps to have explainations of what those numbers and letters mean on the tubes. Daniel Smith paints are my favorite to paint with but they have so many colors it is hard to choose what to put in my pallet! I did buy a couple of the sticks when I was in the store. I haven’t played with them yet, so looking forward to anything you can teach about using them.
Nicely done, well informed, and thoroughly researched. I try to be a smart swatcher because I don’t want to do it over and over again. It’s the same when I pan a palette, I don’t want to outgrow it. I don’t want a new color added that I can’t fit into my pallet. Your system is probably the best approach.
Wonderful video, and so chock full of info! I love looking at artist swatch cards (and making my own), and I enjoyed your explanation of why hex charts (beautiful tho' they are) don't work for watercolor. I'm really looking forward to the watercolor stick video, I have a few DS sticks and am enjoying them especially on my travel palette, but would like to know more ways to use them for mark making, etc. The Winsor & Newton Aureolin (PY40) may have changed color in your swatch card, because it's a lovely, light, glowy yellow out of the tube. It's the only color I've ever owned that turned a dingy grey on my covered palette. Since then, I've stopped using Aureolin and Alizarin Crimson--despite both being gorgeous colors, they are crazy fugitive :).
LMAO "watercolor hex chart" made me watch thinking a Witch was sharing their art magick related to hexing. My mistake lol. Your art is Beautiful! I didn't know people could be certified to color.
Wow! you are so organized.Wish I was but "sigh" woe is me. I love these hex charts. So helpful when wanting to know what blends well. Thanks for sharing this.
I didn’t mind the clickbait Sandy! It was full of info and I started my swatch book about three years ago with BCW coin pages. Very lovely collection and I think I’ll only change my swatchbook by putting the colors in order vs separated by brand. Thanks for sharing. XoFaith
Thank you so much for this video! I have a lot of different materials I gathered over the years and recently I've been playing with watercolor+colored pencils. So frustrating to get the wrong colors...I definitely will make a similar chart for me!
I loved the video. The only exception I have is printing to watercolor over. Many at home photo printers are waterproof black, I use a canon inkjet printer and have no problems printing on 90lb arches or other brands watercolor papers. 140lbs will jam in the standard letter size printers. There is a learning curve to how much water starts the buckling on lighter paper.
Yeah every printer has one problem or another. If I sold a watercolor hex chart my email would explode with questions-so that’s yet one more reason I won’t make one 🤷🏼♀️
Fabulous video. You really should call it something else. I just happen to stumble on your vid... wouldn't choose it by title. Glad I stumbled. Thank you for all the information.
I named it because a lot of people who have my other hex charts are always asking me about one for watercolor. Do you have a suggestion on what else I could call this? What would you look for?
Thank you for all the great information. I've made different swatches before, but this one seems like the most compact and useful. A couple of observations from watching this video. 1. I really love your urban sketching samples you showed throughout and was wondering if you might have a class on that at some time. 2. In the description, the link to your watercolor classes (the one right under the 'All Hex Charts' link) is incorrect, it points to 'classes' instead of 'product-category' and produces an error. Sorry for the lengthy comment :) - I am seriously considering re-doing my swatches and also collecting all my other charts into one Binder.
Where did you purchase the sheet protectors with the small pockets? That's a terrific idea? I am definitely a beginner but am learning so much from watchin you. Thank you so much for all you do.
dropping $5.99 for a hex chart was a bit steep but I know they take a long time to make and so prob worth it in the end. And I do love your videos! The 30 pocket pages are out of stock. I went to Amazon and searched coin collecting pages and found some similar that I think will work if anyone is looking. :-)
Where did you get the holders for your watercolor swatches? The smallest I can find are the baseball ones. I LOVE the idea of doing them the way you have them! Makes my super OCD super happy lololol. I have been searching Amazon, but I can’t seem to find them. I have every other size in the world I think. Thanks for all of your wonderful information!!!!
Thanks for sharing. I need to put in a book as we just moved and my hex chart didn’t make it in the move. My box got wet and my swatch cards, hex chart and other things got damaged. I have to begin again! Now that I’ve seen this...I will do over and put in a book. Good info!!! ❤️❤️❤️
The difference in the colors is the binders used by the company. The pure cad yellow pigment is PY35. If you want to learn more about pigments and companies than you ever thought poss there is a wonderful website by an artist who must have spent most of her life on this very subject. It’s “artiscreation.com”. Thanks for sharing lady.
I found that but when I downloaded it it was way to small to see good. I was trying to get one from Daniel Smith but my art supply store does not carry them. I thought maybe you could tell me how to get one directly from dS . Have just started experimenting with them. You inspire me to try something new and different. Thank you.
Jackson's Art in the UK is the only mail order company that I know of that sends out DS and other brands' printed color charts, but you may need to make a purchase. (www.jacksonsart.com/daniel-smith-watercolour-printed-colour-chart) I'm not sure if Daniel Smith still mails out brochures since you can just print one from the link to the pdf on Sandy's blog, but you could try calling them and asking.
I’m going to ask them to send a bunch to Ellen so she can include them when people buy dot cards. It looks like the online version has the half pan sets in it too so I want to get that one.
I thought a hex chart was for identifying colours on screen for internet usage. But not for specifying manually applied colour. Maybe I am wrong on this....
There are hexadecimal colors for digital color ID, yes. But when I made the original charts for markers, each having more sides to it compacted and connected more colors. ❤️
Wonderful information to have, information is always the key to making better decisions and saving a lot of money. lol Thank you for taking the time to make this informative tutorial. Hugs and blessings to you
I have had some success printing on Bristol smooth with my laser printer and watercolouring my digi stamps but it’s not perfect because of the texture!
Great swatch book. I only use a 24 color pallet in my watercolor paintings as I think it is important to know how to mix colors.
it's 6:22am and im watching this instead of getting ready for work. watching this gives me the feeling of chatting w someone i've known forever :,)

Your #1 fan🦋
Love that you’re trying to use happy yellow to trick yourself into staying organized. =>.
The part of my brain that organizes was doing the happy dance and shouting, “Fantastic, awesome, outstanding...!!!” Your watercolor pictures are amazing. You are so talented!! I’m going to use your method...exceptional.
As a Virgo I love this
I like how you have the paints on their own little swash cards. It makes it where you you can pull out the colors and make a pallet for your piece.
Thank you for explaining the numbers and symbols from the pamphlet showing DS colors! Your binder is awesome! I know this is a time consuming process but it's so worth it. Have a great Friday and weekend!
Sandy thank you for gifting us so much information and doing all that work! We are blessed
As always you have rocked my color wheel world. I know this took a tremendous amount of time and effort. Thank you again
The amount of satisfaction is god level
Thank you so much for this extremely informative video. I really like the watercolor paintings that you did too.
THIS IS THE BEST INFORMATIVE VIDEO EVER!!!! I will definitely be referring back regularly and will share!!!
OMG! You have the entire Daniel Smith watercolor collection, my head just EXPLODED. I love Daniel Smith watercolor paint and crayons. You’re RICH. lol Thank you for sharing I guess. You’re very blessed.
Wow! So much info packed into a video! I believe you will find these same color differences (with the same names) in oils as well. TFS!

Thank you so much. This was helpful, but so much work for you. Please know this information is valued.
Been working on mine as well! Thanks so much for the time you took to share this with us!!! YOU ROCK SANDY!!! BLESSINGS & HUGS!!!

How brilliant to put the chart on clear sheet to use over black !! TFS

Great information and the paintings you did are soooooo beautiful!!! Thanks
Yay, that's pretty cool! Thank you for this. I might never be able to do this, but it's truly inspiring!

very educational!!!!!!!! thank you. looking forward to learning more from you.

Your art is Beautiful! I didn't know people could be certified to color.
LOL! I know....those who are familiar with the hex charts know what that means but I can see it being a weird title otherwise :) :) :)
Wow! you are so organized.Wish I was but "sigh" woe is me. I love these hex charts. So helpful when wanting to know what blends well. Thanks for sharing this.

Fantastic vid! Very educational and fully enjoyable. Thank you Sandy!

Super idea for my watercolors. I am on it! Thanks.

What a GRAND idea re the slide page. Just discovered your UA-cam channel
Wow. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talent. We are blessed

Looks good ,so professional!😍😍😍
Thanks for a very informative video! It was really helpful! 😁😍❤

LAS Ball Oh how awful to have that particular box get wet!
Good tips, thank you Sandy!
This is so fkin satisfying to see omGG
I learned so much from this one video. I'm subscribing!
I've been wanting to do a book like this. What pages did you use? Such a helpful video.
I got them at Ellen Hutson‘s store. Link is in the description 😍😍😍
Very informative video! i think maybe your DS poster is old, though, since I think that DS New Gamboge no longer uses PY153.
Yep I need a new one!
Thank you for sharing
Sandy where did you get the plastic pocket sheets for paint samples- that is really useful. Thank you
At Ellen Hutson’s, link in the supplies list.
Great idea...did you buy the clear pocket pages in the 1-1/2” format?
Yes at Ellen’s
Thank you...sorry I missed that in your comments 👍

Very informative!
Me sitting through this entire video not knowing what a hex chart is lol
😍 a chart arranging colors in visual order. ❤️
Very interesting video. Could you please tell me how I can get the Daniel Smith brochure. Thank you.
There’s a link to it on my blog.
I found that but when I downloaded it it was way to small to see good. I was trying to get one from Daniel Smith but my art supply store does not carry them. The big problem for me is that colours change depending on the colours adjacent to them. How do you handle that?
You can pull out swatches to see next to each other-but they all mix differently too. Which is another reason a hex chart wouldn’t really help.
I just did this over the last 2 days! Well, mine aren't in hexagons.....
Wonderful information to have, information is always the key to making better decisions and saving a lot of money. lol Thank you for taking the time to make this informative tutorial. Hugs and blessings to you
Where can I find the plastic sleeve for my small squares of colors?
Found the resource, now where do I find the squares?
I cut my own squares.
I have had some success printing on Bristol smooth with my laser printer and watercolouring my digi stamps but it’s not perfect because of the texture!
The paint swatches wouldn’t look right on Bristol. Need to swatch on watercolor paper.
We need the hex chart for chameleon pencils
Sorry, I would have to buy the full set and I just don’t have the budget to buy all the brands 😕
What about a Tombow hex chart?
Same thing. Water based. 😕
Yeahh I didn't understand any of this.. prolly Because I just do whatever.
👍👍👍💕💕💕🇩🇰
Great information! Looking forward to reorganizing all my swatches 💕
