Very interesting documentary, love the title. As far as I’m able, whilst having been born 20 years after ww2, I humbly I can understand the resentment of the utter destruction, especially in Waldenburg. Nevertheless, there’s also the knowledge of the German units that fought until the bitter end. Often with just the single goal to invoke as much destruction as possible. With no regard for human life, let alone their fellow countrymen and women. Given the absolute dominance on the battlefield, as well as in the air, of the western allies, at the end of the war; one could ask if all their force was in the end necessary. Although, the simple fact that the allied units deployed just wanted to get through these last days as unscathed as possible and confronted with an enemy whose desperation and no regard for the Geneva Convention, led to the all necessary means doctrine. Only there where the human voice from German representation still, or again spoke, there was breathing room for the humane side to surface on both sides.
@ William Gunnarsson The old folks are rather divided in their opinions and sentiments , one old lady still considered the Americans as enemies to the day(judging by the time data provided the film was shot around 2005 supossively) . Two ladies said , that they were unable to feel liberated , as they did not feel oppressed before and they said , that their youth in the BDM(German Girls League) and in the RAD(Reichs Work Servive) was like the best times of their lives . The lady with the shorter , grey hair said , that she did not take the Americans as enemies , when they first came to her hometown but retreated again due to strong German forces in the vicinity . But she surely took them for enemies , when the US Army came back after 10 days and levelled and burnt her hometown for no reason , as the German forces had already gone by that time . The inhabitants knew about the abundance of German military in their town , but the US Army did not and expected military resistance , so they shot the small town to pieces before even entering . The narrator also talks about villagers trying to convince German troops in their villages to retreat to save their homes from destruction by combat actions . Often this worked out , sometimes they even gave from their own rare food supplies to the German military personnel , if only they would leave , before the Americans would arrive . Some whitnesses , like the man born in 1931 , clearly stated , that he saw the Americans as liberators . But obviously it is clear , that , apart from that one particular lady I've mentioned first , after 60 years gone by these old folks do not hold a grudge against the Americans anymore. All in all I personally think , that this is quite a fair documentary , supposively made around 2005 , explaining different opinions and staying with the historical facts rather then promoting one or the other side . I also believe , that today in 2020 such a film would not have been aired on German TV anymore , as it shows different opinions and sentiments of the historical whitnesses, because our democracy in Germany presently is obviously on the decline once again and the freedom of speech ist severely hampered these days . Ich glaube nicht, dass das deutsche Volk unter demokratischen Bedingungen wesentlich mehr oder intensiver denkt, als unter diktatorischen.
Es gibt viele Ausnahmen wie in jedem anderen Volk auch, bitte keine Verallgemeinerungen und Beleidigungen!!!
